• Boot failure on Ubuntu 11.04

  I was using my laptop with Ubuntu without problem for a few months. I did not update any software or install any OS updates. This morning when it started, I got error: no such device:.... error: no such disk error: you need to load the kernel first. Press any key to continue... Then takes me back to GRUB menu. Both Ubuntu option and recovery mode option show the same thing (above). What does this mean? How do I fix it? Since I did not install anything new, does it mean the SSD is dying (again)? How to check the SSD to and fix any file system errors? Ubuntu 11.04 EDIT: Just remembered something: when the system was shutting down, it did not turn off. There were a bunch of weird output statements, and I assumed the system had shut down so I turned it off with the power button. Perhaps something got corrupted because of that.

  I am setting up a spring mvc web application + hibernate jpa + maven from scratch using Eclipse Indigo. I am stuck in this error when doing a Maven build. If I try to compile the file with Eclipse, I get errors telling me that I don't have included string.h in my lib files.   In an openSUSE 11.1 I download, compile and install ImageMagick via: wget ftp://.../pub/graphics/ImageMagick/ImageMagick-6.7.7-0.zip unzip ImageMagick-6.7.7-0.zip cd ImageMagick-6.7.7-0 ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/ImageMagick make make install Everything works nicelly until I discover that JPG is not supported: identify -list format | grep -i jpg [nothing related to JPG returned] So I reconfigure and recompile using: ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/ImageMagick --with-jpeg=yes --with-jp2=yes make make install But that changes nothing. I end up uninstalling: make uninstall and installing via zypper: zypper install ImageMagick This installed version 6.4.3 and now it does support JPG: identify -list format | grep -i jpg JPG* JPEG rw- Joint Photographic Experts Group JFIF format Any idea on what is going on here? What is a possible reason that this capability of ImageMagick was not there when compiled from source but was there when installed from rpm? Note that I don't necessarily care a lot about ImageMagick (since it now works), but generally about his kind of behaviour, becase in one way or another I've seen this happen in other ocasions as well.

• XAMPP OSX Snow Leopard & php ssh2 extension

  I've been having problems getting the php ssh2 extension to work under xampp on Snow Leopard in my local test environment. I understand xampp is 32 bit and so the extension must be compiled as 32 bit and have found a couple of tutorials detailing how to do this. However, compiling the ssh2 extension requires the libssh2 library to be present for the compiler to access and I'm unsure how to compile libssh2 in 32 bit and force the extension compiler to in turn find/use it - currently it just reports the libssh2 library required version cannot be found. Any help would be much appreciated!

• Updating autoreconf

  So I need to use the autoreconf to configure a package. However I need at least version 2.61. I'm on CentOS 5.8 and it seems like there's no package for it so I went on to compile it myself. So I get the source of autoconf from http://www.gnu.org/software/autoconf/ and compiled that. And sure when I do autoconf -V it shows up as version 2.68 which is indeed the latest version. However autoreconf (nothing the re) still shows up as the old version 2.59 which causes me some problems. So could someone help a relatively new linux user, updating autoreconf properly? Thanks

• Kernel Compiling from Vanilla to several machines

  When compiling kernels for machines is there a safe or correct way to create a template for say servers? I work with a lot of RHEL servers and want to compile them with GRSEC. However, I do not wish to always rebuild off of the .config for each machine and go in and remove a bunch of unrelated modules like wireless, bluetooth, ect... which you typically do not need in servers. I want to create a template .config that can be used on any machine, but is there a safe way to do that when hardware changes? I know with Linux, at least from my experience, you can cross jump hardware way easier then Windows/OSX. I assume that as long as I leave MOST of all the main hardware modules/CPU in that this could create a .config that would work for all or just about any machine?

  hi, UPDATE: I didn't set the response mimetype to 'application/json'. It works now. In the website I'm working on (http://piem.org:8000/) I've got an issue with an ajax post request. Every time the search button is clicked or the google maps 'idle' is triggered I send a request to get some data. While the request works as expected in most cases, it returns an error when I click a result and come back to the search page. (type 'barcelona' in the search box to get the unique restaurant in the db). The server processes the request properly but it seems that the error occurs when the javascript receives it (it returns a "12031" error code). It works properly with FF 3.0.6, IE 8.0 and Chrome 5.0 with GET, and with FF with both POST and GET. Anybody can help? thanks jul

I want to use this page to log the exception that triggered it as well because I only want to LOG the errors that the users encounter (i.e. if SiteError.aspx is ever hit.)   I had MySQL running fine on my Mac till earlier today when I installed homebrew and also updated my Path. When I try to run mysql from my ternimal window now, I get the following error: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) I can't connect MySQLAdmin either. I can't even run Mysqld. The error I get when trying to run mysqld is that it can't create test file. I also tried to tlenet loalhost 3306 and wasn't able to connect. Any help would be appreciated as I am fairly new to Mac.

  Hi all, From a security standpoint, what is the best solution to handle application errors with Websphere? I've been thinking of creating a class that is called every time an application error is generated, log the error and display a generic error message to the users. In PHP this can be achieved using the set_exception_handler() function. Is there something similar for websphere that could be configured in the web.xml? I've found codes like this on the internet: <error-page> <error-code>500</error-code> <location>/servlet/ExceptionHandlerServlet</location> </error-page> But that would only work with "500" HTTP error codes. I really want something generic that catches everything. Something like a class that implements a certain interface which can have access to all information about the error. Thanks for your time.

  I've got this code in my viewController.m file - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; GameLogic *_game = [[GameLogic alloc] init]; [_game initGame]; ....... } GameLogic is another class which I created. in the same viewController.m file, I have got another function - (void)test { if([_game returnElecFence]) { NSLog(@"YES"); } else { NSLog(@"NO"); } } Problem is, whenever the test function is called, I get an error saying '_game' undeclared. I tried putting the GameLogic init code in the .h file and on top of the @implementation to make it global but every method I tried resulted in a worse error. • Does a rollback still occur if I use begin...rescue and an error occurs?

  I've got some strange errors happening in my rails app and I'm trying to log better errors instead of the whole stack of passenger stuff that I don't care about. I thought I would do this with a Rescue clause and explicit error handling, like logging the params hash. But I'm concerned if this would interrupt any rollback that is happening. For that matter, I'm assuming rollbacks automatically occur when an error occurs as part of the normal rails error handling, but I haven't been able to find that documented anywhere. I'm using Dreamhost with MySQL, so I thought transactions and rollbacks were happening there.

• 501 Error during Libjingle PCP on Amazone EC2 running Openfire

  I am trying to implement Google's Libjingle (version: 0.6.14) PCP example and I am getting a 501: feature not implemented error during execution. Specifically, the error occurs after each "account" has connected, been authenticated and began communicating with the other. An abbreviated log of the interaction is provided at the end. I have set up my own jabber server (using OpenFire on an Amazon EC2 server), have opened all of the necessary ports and have added each "account" to the other's roster. • .htaccess not working (mod_rewrite)

  Edit: I am pretty sure my .htaccess file is NOT being executed, and the problem is NOT with my rewrite rules. I have not having any luck getting my .htaccess with mod_rewrite working. Basically all I am trying to do is remove 'www' from "http://www.site.com" and "https://www.site.com". If there is anything I am missing (conf files, etc let me know I willl update this) I jsut can't see whats wrong here... I am using a 1&1 VPS III Virtual private server... anyone ever have this issue? I am using Ubuntu 8.04 Server LTS. • I can't compile android projetc wiht JNI code

  I'm trying to build simple android app with some JNI code. • MSBuild "Wrapper" fails while VS2010 "Pure" compile succeeds for MFC application in CruiseControl.NE

  The Overview I am working on a Continuous Integration build of a MFC appliction via CruiseControl.net and VS2010. When building my .sln, a "Visual Studio" CCNet task (devenv) works, but a wrapper MSBuild script run via the CCNet MSBuild task fails with errors like: error RC1015: cannot open include file 'winres.h'.. error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'afxwin.h': No such file or directory error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'afx.h': No such file or directory The Question How can I adjust the build environment of my msbuild wrapper so that the application builds correctly? (Pretty clearly the MFC paths aren't right for the msbuild environment, but how do i fix it for MSBuild+VS2010+MFC+CCNet?) Background Details We have successfully upgraded an MFC application (.exe with some MFC extension .dlls) to Visual Studio 2010 and can compile the application without issue on developer machines. Now I am working on compiling the application on the CI server environment I did a full installation of VS2010 (Professional) on the build server. In this way, I knew everything I needed would be on the machine (one way or another) and that this would be consistent with developer machines. VS2010 is correctly installed on the CI server, and the devenv task works as expected I now have a wrapper MSBuild script that does some extended version processing and then builds the .sln for the application via an MSBuild task. This wrapper script is run via CCNet's MSBuild task and fails with the above mentioned errors My Assumptions This seems to be a missing/wrong configuration of include paths to standard header resources of the MFC persuasion I should be able to coerce the MSBuild environment to consider the relevant resource files from my VS2010 install and have this approach work. But how do I do that? Am I setting Environment variables? Registry settings? I can see how one can inject additional directories in some cases, but this seems to need a more systemic configuration at the compiler defaults level.
