• Interrupted Upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04

  My upgrade using alternative iso from 11.10 to 12.04 got interrupted and I had to hard restart my machine. Now I feel that everything is recovered except my already installed packages like vim. How do I backup my home folder for fresh installation of ubuntu? Following are the errors I'm facing I couldn't mark any package for re-installation in synaptic or remove and install too. output of sudo apt-get install vim Building dependency tree Reading state information... • Is Google showing ads from other companies or WordPress plugin is injecting ads which are not mine?

  I am using WordPress for managing my blog sort of website, and I am using an Ad Injection plugin to place my ads where I want in a post. Plugin seems very good but I saw some ads which were not from ads networks which I was using. Now I have injected Google ads leaderboard at some place but I saw advertisement from this advertiser: http://www.adroll.com/about/privacy?utm_source=evidon&utm_medium=AdChoices&utm_campaign=privacy%2Bpolicy So I want to know whether ad injecting plugin is doing some trick or Google use ads from other networks too? • How does TDD address interaction between objects?

  TDD proponents claim that it results in better design and decoupled objects. I can understand that writing tests first enforces the use of things like dependency injection, resulting in loosely coupled objects. However, TDD is based on unit tests - which test individual methods and not the integration between objects. And yet, TDD expects design to evolve from the tests themselves. So how can TDD possibly result in a better design at the integration (i.e. inter-object) level when the granularity it addresses is finer than that (individual methods)?

I have seen there is lots of difference between Python and C (obviously) and for Information Security field Python = GOD so I want to know learning Python need any experience on C language? • Verification of UML Class Diagram

  This is my UML Class Diagram made in Astah Community, for a tennis scoreboard game. Moves can be either points (for the player's advantage) or errors (for the opponent's advantage). The Time Machine allows you to travel to previous game states (expressed as scoreboards). The storage component should be able to store matches independently of the serialization format. The serializers and deserializers should be able to do their job regardless of where the storage lies. The GameEngine should be able to apply the rules of the game regardless of the particularities of the game (hence, dependency injection through the Settings class). The outcomes of games, sets and matches should be deducible based on the points and the rules to apply (the logic implementations are there to provide the rules). Could you please verify my design and tell me if there's anything wrong with it? Thanks in advance.

  The question Do you actively think about security when coding? asks about security mindset while programming. Obviously, a developer does need to think about security while coding — SQL injection, password security, etc. However, as far as the real, fully-formed security, especially the tricky problems that may not be immediately obvious, should I be concerned with tackling these throughout the development process, or should it be a step of its own in later development? I was listening to a podcast on Security Now and they mentioned about how a lot of the of the security problems found in Flash were because when Flash was first developed it wasn't built with security in mind (because it didn't need to) — therefore Flash has major security flaws at its core. I know that no one would want to actively disagree with "think security first" as a best practice, but many companies do not follow best practices. So, what is the correct approach to balance between needing to get the product done and developing it securely?

• Junior software developer - How to understand web aplications in depth?

  I am currently a junior developer in web applications and specifically in asp.net mvc technology. My problem is that the c# senior developer in the company has no experience with this technology and I try to learn without any guidance. I went through all tutorials (e.g music store), codeplex projects and also read pro asp.net mvc 4. However, most of the examples are about crud and e-commerce applications. What I don't understand is how dependency injection fits in web applications (I have realized that is not only used for facilitating unit testing) or when i should use a custom model binder or how to model the business logic when there is already a database schema in place. I read the forum quite often and it would very helpful if some experienced developers could give me an insight about how to proceed. Do I need to read some books to understand the overall idea behind web applications? And what kind of application should I start building myself - I don't think it would be useful to create similar examples with the tutorials.

• How to remove synaptic without installing all the unwanted packages?

  I am trying to uninstall synaptic. I prefer using apt-get and other command line tools to manage my packages. So I do not need synaptic and the software manager. I'm trying to remove both of them using apt-get. Its a new box. Recently installed Linux Mint mate 15. After installation, the only thing I did was, sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade After that, I did this command for removing synaptic, sudo apt-get remove --purge synaptic But this gives me a very weird output, Reading package lists... • 12.04 BCM4312 and aireplay-ng/airodump-ng

  First off, I've read through all of the posts regarding BCM4312 on the forums but haven't been able to get any help. Basically I have a Dell Inspiron 1564 which I've installed 12.04 on and for the most part everything works fine but now that I'm trying to use more in depth utilities such as aireplay and airodump I'm coming across what I believe to be a driver problem thats not allowing compatibility for these programs. Does anyone out there have any suggestions how to resolve this? This is the error I receive: root@Haxornator:~/aircrack/aircrack-ng-1.1# airodump-ng eth2 ioctl(SIOCSIWMODE) failed: Invalid argument ARP linktype is set to 1 (Ethernet) - expected ARPHRD_IEEE80211, ARPHRD_IEEE80211_FULL or ARPHRD_IEEE80211_PRISM instead. • Advice for transitioning into a Java developer position from doing other types of web development?

  I've been doing web programming and currently work at a company working with mainly PHP and Javascript. For a little while now I've been becoming more and more frustrated with the shortcomings of this type of development and want to move to a company with a more defined development process that values doing things the "right way" such as using Unit tests, dependency injection / IoC, etc. I've been learning JEE / Java as much as I can on my own time but would really like to make a switch to doing this as my career and leave behind the PHP world altogether. I'm just wondering if anyone can give me advice on which things to put my main focus on right now to make myself marketable as an entry level Java developer. Basically, I feel that I'm not really learning anything new at my current job that will benefit me and its only making me more and more frustrated so I figure if there is any way to position myself for a transition I would rather do it sooner than later. • Package management system corrupted. Cannot install or remove packages. U12.04LTS

  Having read other posts, I believe that this may be less about samba than about update system. Below is the log file of the failed installation of Samba. I have been trying without success to install/outstall samba so that I could install anything else ... I cannot either install or remove samba using either update-manager or apt-get (nor indeed Software Centre). One of the errors that I have had to correct is the presence after "removal" (failed) of /usr/share/system-config-samba directory which finally allowed itself to be deleted. That, however was then ... I have U12.04LTS. running on release 63 because I allowed the upgrade to 64 this morning which fell over - no output to monitor - obviously even less support for my graphic chip than I am suffering already (see other posts in this forum). According to my interpretation of the dpkg returned errors there may be some problem with the package files, but if this is the case then it is on servers 'main', 'nantes uni fr' and 'best fr' at the very least if not everywhere. The suggestions offered at Package operation failed and elsewhere have not worked for me. This linked post suggests that a similar error is present in other packages, or that the error is in the 'update system' I have tried ... sudo apt-get remove samba ... autoremove ... install samba ... clean ... update -f all of the above In update-manager I have tried the "reload packages list" which fails to terminate because of the error. I have tried to install and remove samba from the software centre ... :( I am at a loss ... I need help, please! Firstly to recover my apt-get/update-manager/Software Centre so that I can at least carry on with my continuing installation - up to communicating with home network hence need for samba - which brings me to my second requirement ... samba. PS is the issue about "MaxReports" associated or apart? UPDATE! Being heartily sick of restarting FF every 5 seconds I thought I'd try again with Chromium ... and got the same errors from dpkg about corrupt compressed package - coincidence? Of course this was no longer in clipboard when I got here because apport has just errored ... AAARRRGGGH!!! Why does every error clear the clipboard? • Converting .docx to pdf (or .doc to pdf, or .doc to odt, etc.) with libreoffice on a webserver on the fly using php

  Ok, so I needed to convert .docx files to .pdf files on the fly, but none of the free php libraries that were available let me do it on my server (a webservice was not good enough). Basically either I needed to pay for a library (and have it maybe suck) or just deal with the free ones that didn't convert the formatting well enough. Not good enough! I found that LibreOffice (OpenOffice's successor) allows command line conversion using the LibreOffice conversion engine (which DID preserve the formatting like I wanted and generally worked great). I loaded the latest version of Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download) onto my Virtual Box (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads) on my computer and found that I was able to easily convert files using the commandline like this: libreoffice --headless -convert-to pdf fileToConvert.docx -outdir output/path/for/pdf I thought: sweet...but I don't have admin rights on my host's web server. I tried to use a "portable" version of LibreOffice that I obtained from http://portablelinuxapps.org/ but I was unable to get it to work on my host's webserver, because my host's webserver didn't have all the dependencies (Dependency Hell! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dependency_hell) I was at a loss of how to make it work, until I ran across a cool project made by a Ph.D. student (Philip J. Guo) at Stanford called CDE: http://www.stanford.edu/~pgbovine/cde.html I will let you look at his explanations of how it works (I followed what he did in http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6XdwHo1BWwY, starting at about 32:00 as well as the directions on his site), but in short, it allows one to avoid dependency hell by copying all the files used when you run certain commands, recreating the linux environment where the command worked. I was able to use this to run LibreOffice without having to resort to someone's portable version of it, and it worked just like it did when I did it on Ubuntu with the command above, with a tweak: I needed to run the wrapper of LibreOffice the CDE generated. So, below is my PHP code that calls it. In this code snippet, the filename to be copied is passed in as $_POST["filename"]. I copy the file to the same spot where I originally converted the file, convert it, copy it back and then delete all the files (so that it doesn't start growing exponentially). I did it this way because I wasn't able to make it work otherwise on the webserver. If there is a linux + webserver ninja out there that can figure out how to make it work without doing this, I would be interested to know what you did. I made a truly portable version of LibreOffice that can convert files on the fly on a webserver using 100% free, open source software!

• Bringing in New Architecture During Maintenance on Legacy Systems

  I have been tasked with adding some new features to a legacy ASP.NET MVC2 project. The codebase is a disaster and I want to write these new features with some thought behind the implementation and not just throw these new features into the mess. I would like to introduce things like dependency injection and the orchestrator pattern; just to the code that I am going to write. I don't have enough time to try to refactor the entire system. Is it OK to not be consistent with the rest of the codebase and add new features following different design principles? Should I not introduce new patterns and just get the features implemented? I feel like it might be confusing to the next person to see parts of the system using a design that other parts are not following.

• broken upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04 on a VPS - recoverable?

  I have a VPS hosted 1500 km away. It originally came with 9.10 - and this morning I decided that I really should get to an LTS release, and figured I'd jump to 12.04. Researching, I discovered that there is no direct path between 9.10 and 12.04, but that I could upgrade via 10.04. After backing up my data, I dove in. The upgrade to 10.04 was successful, and I proceeded to upgrade to 12.04. Things started to go wrong. First, I got an error with GLIBC - I retried and got the same error. That's when I stopped the upgrade.
