• Linux software raid robustness

  I have a 4 disk 5TB raid5 setup where a disk is showing signs of going down the drain. It is reporting media errors and from dmesg I can see that several read errors are corrected. smartctl does report "notifications" but no panic so far. Since new disks are rather expensive at the moment I am starting to pondering exactly how robust the linux md layer is. I would appreciate if someone could shed some light on how md actually deals with disk errors. For example how does md deal with write and read errors - what does it (really) take for disk to be rejected from an array. I also read that recently md got support for mapping out bad blocks. Does this mean that the read errors I've had would have been mapped out if I where running kernel 3.1 or would md still try to "work on them" to make them usable.

  Windows 8 has a new feature that allows you to automatically run scheduled daily maintenance on your computer. These maintenance tasks run in the background and include security updating and scanning, Windows software updates, disk defragmentation, system diagnostics, among other tasks. We’ve previously shown you how to automate maintenance in Windows 7, Vista, and XP. Windows 8 maintenance is automatic by default and the performance and energy efficiency has been improved over Windows 7. The program for Windows 8 automatic maintenance is called MSchedExe.exe and it is located in the C:\Windows\System32 directory. We will show you how you can change the automatic maintenance settings in Windows 8 and how you can start and stop the maintenance manually.   Hi Everyone, I have been given the task to change OS of a HP Proliant ML350 G4 server, and I decided to use Ubuntu server edition for that matter. The thing is that the server has already installed Windows server 2000 on the only Hard drive it has (SCSI). My question is, could I install an IDE HD on the IDE connection it has and install ubuntu without overwritting the boot configuration, so if I wanted to go back to the windows 2000 server installation with no problems? It also has a tape drive which is used for backups. Do you guys know how buntu deals with such devices? Thanks for your time

• The visual effects in Windows 7 turns off after reboot.

  I have Windows 7 64-bit Professional on my PC. When using English language, the visual effects are turned on. When I use Telugu LIP (India), the visual effects are turned off every time I reboot my PC. When I say visual effects, I don't mean the aero effects. The maximize and minimize effects are not felt. The effects don't show up though the check boxes are checked. Find the image showing the check boxes are checked but the effects not being showed up p. UPDATE: I recreated the account and now the effects are restored properly. UPDATE: Yes it is. This is a standard account. The surprising thing is,the check boxes are checked but still no animations. Once I make the apply button enable, the animations show up again.

  Feeling disempowered by Ubuntu's new bug reporting policy/system. My Intel i5 machines have all experienced daily (if not more frequent) freezes, but it's very difficult to report bugs now and policy instead is just for ubuntu to collect counts; no way for me to see that anything is (or is not) being worked on. I've just experienced a freeze and now on reboot I'm stuck in a cycle of "Ubuntu has an internal error" (presumably Ubuntu never experiences an external error...) do you want to report it? Yes. Oh another internal error... It looks like this report could contain useful information. Is there anyway to make sure it gets provided to the people who can fix it?

  I am Sarang Dave from India. I am using BSNL 3G prepaid wireless broad band. When I have purchased it, it could open the website : http://stackoverflow.com But, now from last 2 months, I am unable to open this website. :( I have changed my DNS server to 8.8.8.8 & Alternate server to 8.8.4.4. This both are the free google dns servers. But, still facing the same problem. For reference : http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html I am getting following error after loading : The server at stackoverflow.com is taking too long to respond. • TCP/IP- what is it exactly?

  I know that this question sounds stupid, but over all these years, I still have difficulty explaining TCP/IP to people. I don't completely get it myself, and even after reading up on it, the distinction is not very clear. What I get so far is that IP deals with networks while TCP involves delivery of messages over that network. I'm not totally convinced though. Also, they reside on different layers of the Internet architecture. Could anyone disambiguate this distinction using a simple analogy or examples? Also, I read this somewhere The difference is that TCP is responsible for the data delivery of a packet and IP is responsible for the logical addressing. In other words, IP obtains the address and TCP guarantees delivery of data to that address. Is this correct? Thanks for helping me out. One last thing- Where does the ethernet come in all of this?

  I am going to buy BenQ G2220HD 22" LCD display I already have an EVGA GeForce 9400GT. Both support DVI. But the confusion came when I wanted to buy a DVI cable. I am confused with DVI and DVI-D and DVI-I and then Single link and Dual link! Can someone tell me whether this cable can be used to connect my 9400GT to my BenQ display? If not, what kind of DVI cable should I buy - DVI, DVI-D, single link, dual link, DVI-I?? Basically, geforce docs say it is a dual link dvi capable one. my benq display docs say it is dvi-d. what are my options now? what kind of dvi cable should I get? • How do you use blog content?

  Do you write a blog, have you ever thought about it? I think people fall into one of a few categories when it comes to blogs, especially blogs with technical content. Writing articles furiously - daily, twice daily and reading dozens of others. Writing the odd piece of content and read plenty of others' output. Started a blog once and its fizzled out but reading lots. Thought about starting a blog someday but never got around to it, hopping into the occasional blog when a link or a Tweet takes them there. Never thought about writing one but often catching content from them when Google (or other preferred search engine) finds content related to their search. Now I am not saying that either of these is right or wrong, nor am I saying that anyone should feel any compulsion to be in any particular category. What I would say is that you as a blog reader have the power to move blog writers from one category to another. How, you might ask? How do I have any power over a blog writer? It is very simple - feedback. If you give feedback then the blog writer knows that they are reaching an audience, if there is no response then they we are simply writing down our thoughts for what could amount to nothing more than a feeble amount of exercise and a few more key stokes towards the onset of RSI. Most blogs have a mechanism to alert the writer when there are comments, and personally speaking, if an email is received saying there has been a response to a blog article then there is a rush of enthusiasm, a moment of excitement that someone is actually reading and considering the text that was submitted and made available for the whole world to read. I am relatively new to this blog game and could be in some extended honeymoon period as I have also recently been incorporated into the Simple Talk 'stable'. I can understand that once you get to the "Dizzy Heights of Ozar" (www.brentozar.com) then getting comments and feedback might not be such a pleasure and may even be rather more of a chore but that, I guess, is the price of fame. For us mere mortals starting out blogging, getting feedback (or even at the moment for me, simply the hope of getting feedback) is what keeps it going. The hope that you will pick a topic that hasn't been done recently by Brad McGehee, Grant Fritchey,  Paul Randall, Thomas LaRock or any one of the dozen of rock star bloggers listed here or others from SQLServerPedia and so on, and then do it well enough to be found, reviewed, or <shudder> (re)tweeted to bring more visitors is what we are striving for, along with the fact that the content we might produce is something that will be of benefit to others. There is only so much point to typing content that no-one is reading and putting it on a blog. You may as well just write it in a diary. A technical blog is not like, say, a blog covering photography techniques where the way to frame and take a picture stands true whether it was written last week, last year or last century - technical content goes sour, quite quickly. There isn't much call for articles about yesterdays technology unless its something that still applies to current versions too, so some content written no more than 2 years ago isn't worth having now. The combination of a piece of content that you know is going to not last long and the fact that no-one reads it is a strong force against writing anything else. Getting feedback counters that despair and gives a value to writing something new. I would say that any feedback is good but there are obviously comments that are just so negative or otherwise badly phrased that they would hasten the demise of a blog but, in general most feedback will encourage a writer. It may not be a comment that supports or agrees with the main theme of a post but if it generates discussion or opens up a previously unexplored viewpoint it is contributing to the blog and is therefore encouraging to the writer. Even if you only say "thank you" before you leave a blog, having taken a section of script to use for yourself or having been given a few links to some content that has widened your knowledge it will be so welcome to the blog owner. Isn't it also the decent thing to do, acknowledging that you have benefited from another's efforts?

  I am from India. I was a Mainframe developer for first 2 years of my IT career and then shifted to Microsoft .Net and completed 3 years as of now. In these 3 years as a .Net developer i have worked only in core .Net skills like Asp .Net, Sql Server with C# .Net. I never worked in advance skills like Web Services or WCF or silverlight etc. In current world market scenario, I feel Sharepoint experience weighs more than the WCF, Web Services work experience for a .Net Developer.(Please correct if wrong). So i am planning to study Sharepoint through some training centre and complete a Sharepoint certification. The main reason for me to go for Sharepoint is that i feel it is a niche skill and it will help me to get a job in abroad location in future. Please let me know whether sharepoint can help me to get a job in foreign location. I would also like to know whether, Is it possible to master Sharepoint without any experience in skills like WCF, Web Services etc? Is it possible to get a sharepoint job just with knowledge and certification in it? Incase if sharepoint will not offer me career growth, then can you please suggest me the skills which will offer great career growth (like foreign jobs) for me as a .Net developer?

  Earlier this month, I had a fantastic time presenting at DevReach 2013, in Sofia, Bulgaria on Oct 1, 2013. DevReach strives to be the premier developer conference in Central and Eastern Europe. It is organized annually in Sofia, Bulgaria. The 8th edition of the conference is moving to a new and bigger venue: Sofia Event Center. In my career, I have presented over 9 different countries (India, USA, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand), this was the first time for me to present in Europe. DevReach was perfect places to start my journey in Europe as an evangelist. The event was one of the most organized event I have ever come across in my life. The DevRech organization team had perfected every minute detail of the event to perfection. After the event was over I had the opportunity to see Sofia for one day. I presented with one of my most favorite Database Worst Practices Session.
