    Say I have an parent entity, each of which have a number of children. I want to get all the parents sorted by their number of children. Something similar to the following pseudo code: NSEntityDescription * entity = [NSEntityDescription entityForName:@"Parent" inManagedObjectContext:managedObjectContext]; [[NSSortDescriptor alloc] initWithKey:@"children.count" ascending:NO]; //Execute request Is there a way construct a fetch like this using core data?   • Core Data iPad/iPhone BLOBS vs File system for 20k PDFs

    I'm designing an iPad/iPhone app using core data. The main focus of the app is sorting and viewing up to 20,000 PDFs They are ~200KB each. Typically its best to not store BLOBS in a DB, but for desktop systems I've typically seen it said that if the blobs are < 1 MB then its fine to use the DB. Any considerations I should take into count? If I store them in the file system can I store them all in one directory and not have performance issues (I won't need to ever get a directory list since I'd store each's path in the DB)? Should I divide them among a handful of directories? If so is there a good rule on # of files per dir?

  • Core Data passing context between methods on secondary threads

    My app spawns a secondary thread for some core data store maintenance. In the secondary thread, I set up a context which I then pass to other methods e.g. [self editEntriesInContext:context]. However, this causes objects fetched from the context to become invalidated in editEntries... Why does this occur? I thought the only requirements were for the secondary thread to have its own context and managed objects, which I adhere to. (Note: The context is properly retained)

    Hi all, I've got a core data-based app for iPhone and I'm getting the following warning: objc[2472]: Class Property is implemented in both /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Notes.framework/Notes and /var/mobile/Applications/B69194FF-448F-48AD-A78D-DDB8935F/AmcCalc.app/AmcCalc. One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined. When I started working on this app back with SDK 3.0 I didn't get this error, so how do I deal with this? Thanks! Bjorn

    Oddly enough, MSDN has no information on the order preserving properties of data structures. So I've been making the assumption that: Hashtable and Hashset do not preserve the insertion order (aka the "hash" in there is a giveaway) Dictionary and List DO preserve the insertion order. from this I extrapolate that if I have a Dictionary<double,double> foo that defines a curve, foo.Keys.ToList() and foo.Values.ToList() will give me an ordered list of the scope and domain of that curve without messing about with it?

  • Problems with opening CHM Help files from Network or Internet

    As a publisher of a Help Creation tool called Html Help Help Builder, I’ve seen a lot of problems with help files that won't properly display actual topic content and displays an error message for topics instead. Here’s the scenario: You go ahead and happily build your fancy, schmanzy Help File for your application and deploy it to your customer. Or alternately you've created a help file and you let your customers download them off the Internet directly or in a zip file. The customer downloads the file, opens the zip file and copies the help file contained in the zip file to disk. She then opens the help file and finds the following unfortunate result:     The help file  comes up with all topics in the tree on the left, but a Navigation to the WebPage was cancelled or Operation Aborted error in the Help Viewer's content window whenever you try to open a topic. The CHM file obviously opened since the topic list is there, but the Help Viewer refuses to display the content. Looks like a broken help file, right? But it's not - it's merely a Windows security 'feature' that tries to be overly helpful in protecting you. The reason this happens is because files downloaded off the Internet - including ZIP files and CHM files contained in those zip files - are marked as as coming from the Internet and so can potentially be malicious, so do not get browsing rights on the local machine – they can’t access local Web content, which is exactly what help topics are. If you look at the URL of a help topic you see something like this:   mk:@MSITStore:C:\wwapps\wwIPStuff\wwipstuff.chm::/indexpage.htm which points at a special Microsoft Url Moniker that in turn points the CHM file and a relative path within that HTML help file. Try pasting a URL like this into Internet Explorer and you'll see the help topic pop up in your browser (along with a warning most likely). Although the URL looks weird this still equates to a call to the local computer zone, the same as if you had navigated to a local file in IE which by default is not allowed.  Unfortunately, unlike Internet Explorer where you have the option of clicking a security toolbar, the CHM viewer simply refuses to load the page and you get an error page as shown above. How to Fix This - Unblock the Help File There's a workaround that lets you explicitly 'unblock' a CHM help file. To do this: Open Windows Explorer Find your CHM file Right click and select Properties Click the Unblock button on the General tab Here's what the dialog looks like:   Clicking the Unblock button basically, tells Windows that you approve this Help File and allows topics to be viewed.   Is this insecure? Not unless you're running a really old Version of Windows (XP pre-SP1). In recent versions of Windows Internet Explorer pops up various security dialogs or fires script errors when potentially malicious operations are accessed (like loading Active Controls), so it's relatively safe to run local content in the CHM viewer. Since most help files don't contain script or only load script that runs pure JavaScript access web resources this works fine without issues. How to avoid this Problem As an application developer there's a simple solution around this problem: Always install your Help Files with an Installer. The above security warning pop up because Windows can't validate the source of the CHM file. However, if the help file is installed as part of an installation the installation and all files associated with that installation including the help file are trusted. A fully installed Help File of an application works just fine because it is trusted by Windows. Summary It's annoying as all hell that this sort of obtrusive marking is necessary, but it's admittedly a necessary evil because of Microsoft's use of the insecure Internet Explorer engine that drives the CHM Html Engine's topic viewer.     Hi there, Does anyone have any recommendations with localization of core data? My application will have information that will sometimes be the same in both langauges, such as a person's photo, or different such as the person's biography. From what I understand, it's possible to localize the field names (http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/CoreData/Articles/cdUsingMOM.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40005190-SW13), but what's the best course of action for field values? How can I jump to the next record (the one below the one I selected in the tableview before) through a "next" button in the view ?   • iPhone: Speeding up a search that's polling 17,000 Core Data objects

    I have a class that conforms to UISearchDisplayDelegate and contains a UISearchBar. This view is responsible for allowing the user to poll a store of about 17,000 objects that are currently managed by Core Data. Everytime the user types in a character, I created an instance of a SearchOperation (subclasses NSOperation) that queries Core Data to find results that might match the search. The code in the search controller looks something like: - (void)filterContentForSearchText:(NSString*)searchText scope:(NSString*)scope { // Update the filtered array based on the search text and scope in a secondary thread if ([searchText length] < 3) { [filteredList removeAllObjects]; // First clear the filtered array. [self setFilteredList:NULL]; [self.tableView reloadData]; return; } NSDictionary *searchdict = [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObjectsAndKeys:scope, @"scope", searchText, @"searchText", nil]; [aSearchQueue cancelAllOperations]; SearchOperation *searchOp = [[SearchOperation alloc] initWithDelegate:self dataDict:searchdict]; [aSearchQueue addOperation:searchOp]; } And my search is rather straight forward. SearchOperation is a subclass of NSOperation. I overwrote the main method with the following code: - (void)main { if ([self isCancelled]) { return; } NSAutoreleasePool *pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; NSEntityDescription *entity = [NSEntityDescription entityForName:@"MyEntity" inManagedObjectContext:managedObjectContext]; NSFetchRequest *fetchRequest = [[NSFetchRequest alloc] init]; [fetchRequest setEntity:entity]; NSPredicate *predicate = NULL; predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"(someattr contains[cd] %@)", searchText]; [fetchRequest setPredicate:predicate]; NSError *error = NULL; NSArray *fetchResults = [managedObjectContext executeFetchRequest:fetchRequest error:&error]; [fetchRequest release]; if (self.delegate != nil) [self.delegate didFinishSearching:fetchResults]; [pool drain]; } This code works, but it has several issues. It's slow. Even though I have the search happening in a separate thread other than the UI thread, querying 17,000 objects is clearly not optimal. If I'm not careful, crashes can happen. I set the max concurrent searches in my NSOperationQueue to 1 to avoid this. What else can I do to make this search faster? I think preloading all 17,000 objects into memory might be risky. There has to be a smarter way to conduct this search to give results back to the user faster.

While using this control i came across a few issues like - When the tab control loads, it invokes constructor of all the xaml pages that form the individual tabs. Can this be avoided? Is there any event with tab control that we can use to identify dirty data on the previous tab that i may have visited. I mean can i prevent user from navigating to some other tab before saving the changes on current tab.

I believe I can use mysqlimport as well if that is available, so any feedback (and code snippet) on which is the better route, is welcome.   • A couple questions using fwrite/fread with data structures

    Hi, I'm using fwrite() and fread() for the first time to write some data structures to disk and I have a couple of questions about best practices and proper ways of doing things. What I'm writing to disk (so I can later read it back) is all user profiles inserted in a Graph structure. The break is there for testing purposes. There's thousands of users and I'm still experimenting with the code. My questions: After reading this I decided to use fwrite() on each element instead of writing the whole structure. I also avoid writing the pointer to to the mailbox as I don't need to save that pointer. So, is this the way to go? Multiple fwrite()'s instead of a global one for the whole structure? Isn't that slower? How do I read back this content? I know I have to use fread() but I don't know the size of the strings, cause I used strlen() to write them. I could write the output of strlen() before writing the string, but is there any better way without extra writes?
