• how to modify another user's .profile from the recovery console?

  Pretty much everything is in the title, really! ;) I installed a few components to compile go programs, and the last step was to add the go directory to the path. Being a total ubuntu noob, I added the line PATH="Path/To/Folder", after the one that was already there. After the first reboot I can no longer log into ubuntu (the screen black-out for a while and then I'm back to the login screen, and the same chime greets me.) I've been able to boot in recovery mode, open the root's profile with vi, but I cant find my other user's profile, nor pretty much anything.. Any hint would be greatly appreciated! Pascal

• Is constantly looking for code examples a sign of a bad developer?

  I am a CS student with several years of experience in C and C++, and for the last few years I've been constantly working with Java/Objective C doing app development and now I have switched to web development and am mainly focused on ruby on rails and I came to the realization that (as with app development , really) I reference other code way too much. I constantly Google functionality for lots of things I imagine I should be able to do from scratch and it's really cracked my confidence a bit. Basic fundamentals are not an issue, I hate to use this as an example but I can run through javabat in both java/python at a sprint - obviously not an accomplishment and but what I mean to say is I have a strong base for the fundamentals I think? I know what I need to use typically but reference syntax constantly. Would love some advice and input on this, as it has been holding me back pretty solidly in terms of looking for work in this field even though I'm finishing my degree. My main reason for asking is not really about employment, but more that I don't want to be the only guy at a hackathon not hammering out nonstop code and sitting there with 20 Google/github tabs open, and I have refrained from attending any due to a slight lack of confidence... Is a person a bad developer by constantly looking to code examples for moderate to complex tasks?

• What are the advantages and limitations of using Qt for game development? [on hold]

  I know there is already a thread asking for example 3d games written using Qt. What I'd like to have a discussion about is whether or not Qt is a good framework for game development. In my experience Qt is a joy to work with and thanks to QML and QML/3d it's looking like it could be a viable framework for game development. The thought of using signals and slots for gamedev is exciting. I'd like to hear some opinions on Qt in general as a game development platform. What are it's limitations? What are it's advantages? • IIS 7.5 on Windows Server 2008 R2 refusing to create PASSIVE MODE FTP connections

  I'm attempting to get an FTP client written in perl to transfer files from an IIS 7.5 FTP server using passive mode. I've configured the FTP server as per instructions and have also configured Windows Firewall to allow this type of traffic. I have validated that the firewall is behaviong correctly by checking to ensure there are no blocked packets in the logs. I have verified the that FTP control channel is being opened on Port 21. I believe the client is being told by IIS which port to connect on for passive mode and IIS is refusing to allow this connection. • Windows 7 sometimes boots in VGA mode

  I have an Asus G50VT-x5 laptop with nVidia GeForce9800M-GS graphics. Normally, Windows boots normally, but about 20% of the time (rough estimate), it will boot with the fallback VGA driver, maxing out at 800x600 with no Aero. I've checked the system logs and there is nothing indicating an error loading the nVidia driver. It even specifies in the logs that the Nvidia Display Driver service started successfully, even though it has booted in safe graphics mode. This has been happening for a while, but it's happening a little more often now than it was before. Since the first time my system exhibited this behavior, I have updated my graphics driver a handful of times. I used System Information for Windows to check for problems there, but the only thing that stood out was the following: Core Temperature 4486449 °C (8075639 °F) Shaders Temperature 1171513530 °C (2108724330 °F) I know this reading is incorrect, because my laptop is nowhere near the surface of the sun and my desk has not burst into flames. When it's opererating normally, I get a sane reading like [Core Temperature 58 °C (136 °F)] with no Shaders Temperature listed. All I have to do to resolve the issue is reboot. I have seen no stability issues with the graphics or anything else. A long time ago, I had an issue with this computer where my framerate would suddenly drop during a 3D game from 40fps to <1fps, but after looking at the temperature readout immediately after quitting a game, I removed the bottom panel and blew the dust out of the vent and heatsink. Since then I have no drops in framerate under any situation. I have uploaded a zip containing the SIW reports for when the problem is occurring and when the computer is operating normally. I don't have a paid account so it can only be downloaded 10 times, so please only download the reports if you think you can use them. If you try to download the reports and they are no longer available, please comment and I will re-upload them. If you want to look at the files, they are on Rapidshare. EDIT It happened again, and I looked a little deeper into the System logs. When this happens, there are a lot of errors about other device drivers unable to start. All of these errors are for PnP drivers. Also, my USB keyboard and mouse take a few moments before they actually start working, although this happens sometimes the first normal boot as well. I am quite sure this is related, so I am adding the pnp tag. Also, CHKDSK will not run on boot. Even if a check is scheduled or a volume is manually set as dirty, CHKDSK will be skipped entirely, not even leaving an entry in the System logs. I tried running CHKNTFS /D, which did not work. I then manually changed my HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager BootExecute value to the default listed on Microsoft's website. That did not work either. I ended up booting to repair mode and running CHKDSK there, which found a number of minor inconsistencies on my system drive, but none on my data drive. I have no idea if this is related. Some more information for those who don't download my SIW report file: Antivirus and Firewall are ESET Smart Security I have three different virutalization programs installed: VMware Player, Windows Virtual PC, and VirtualBox. The network adapters for these show up in the log of failed device starts. EDIT 2 I tried running sfc /scannow, which reported that it found corrupted files that could not be fixed. The CBS log is extremely cryptic. I tried booting to my install disk, launching repair mode, and doing an offline sfc from there, which produced the same result.

• Managing modes in Windows application working directly with SQL Server 2008

  Hi, I have a MS Access 97 application (but the question is general) working directly with SQL Server 2008 (without application server or anything). Numbers of users can be up to 1000. Windows Authentication is used. The question is: How to handle modes, so some users will be allowed to work in read-only mode some users won't have access to db for some time My versions: Using a table with a mode id for every group of users, that will work the same way. On Form Load application will query that table for mode id. Using trigger on the tables, that must work according to that mode. The trigger will query mode value and doesn't work if access is closed or it's in read-only mode I know it's not these are not the best solutions, that's why I'm asking for your advice. There's one more point. If the mode is changed to "access-is-closed" for a group of users, that group must not be able to query to DB starting that moment. With first solution I wrote it won't work, because user can be in application at that moment and no form load event will work. How can I do this? Is there any optimal solution? Thank you. • Web Developer - How to enhance my skillset?

  First of all pardon my English. I am not a native English speaker I have been a Web Developer for the past 4 years. In these 4 years I have spent my time on the internet to learn things. My current skillset comprises of HTML CSS PHP MySQL jQuery (I would not say js and rather say jQuery because I am good at using jQuery and bad with plain javascript.) The above things seemed like an easier part of my life as I quickly learned them. But now I would really like to enhance my skillset and I am pretty confused which way to move ahead considering that I have to learn things using the web and references on my own. Design My first option is towards design. Shall I get started with design and start using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, Flex. Designing along with my previous skills looks like a money maker to me. As both are co-related to each other when web design is considered. And its easier to learn the first 2 and I hope I can get tutorials for the last 2 as well. Marketing A lot of my existing clients asked me if I do SEO. So this looked as a good field to me as well. I cannot estimate the scope of SEO but I assume it has a long future. Since I am business minded as well and there are a lot of tutorials around, should I start with SEO, SEM, Social Media, PPC or whatever it consists of. Software Development The complex plight and hardest thing (perhaps) but the easiest way to find a decent job in my location. If I go for software development what platform should be that I should be ideally going after? Should it be C# for windows development, or ASP.NET (once again enhances my skill set), J2EE (there are a lot of jobs for J2EE developers here) or plain C and C++. Also I think it is difficult to learn software languages right from Hello World, using internet? I have no clue how I learned PHP but I am sort of a pro now, but these other languages seems like a disaster to me? I cant figure out the reason if its because PHP is easier or there was a lot of tutorials around for PHP. Anyways is it also possible to learn software development right from Hello World using the web? Database / Server (Linux) / Network Administration Seems like a job with a decent pay but less number of jobs and a bit harder to learn online. (not sure) What should be the right track I should move ahead. P.S - Age is not a constraint for me as I am between 20-21, and I come from an IT background. I know quite little basics about C (upto structures) C++ (upto objects, I was not able to understand templates) Core Java (some basics and OOP concept) RDBMS Visual Basic 6 (used to do this long back) UNIX (a bunch of commands like who, finger, chmod, ls and a bit of #bash) Or is there anything else that I left out? I need you guys to please give me a feedback and the reason why I should select that field.

• Seperation of project responsibilities in new project

  We have very recently started a new project (MVC 3.0) and some of our early discussion has been around how the work and development will be split amongst the team members to ensure we get the least amount of overlap of work and so help make it a bit easier for each developer to get on and do their work. The project is expected to take about 6 months - 1 year (although not all developers are likely to be on and might filter off towards the end), Our team is going to be small so this will help out a bit I believe. The team will essentially consist of: 3 x developers (1 a slightly more experienced and will be the lead) 1 x project manager / product owner / tester An external company responsbile for doing our design work General project/development decisions so far have included: Develop in an Agile way using SCRUM techniques (We are still very much learning this approach as a company) Use MVVM archectecture Use Ninject and DI where possible Attempt to use as TDD as much as possible to drive development. Keep our controllers as skinny as possible Keep our views as simple as possible During our discussions two approaches have been broached as too how to seperate the workload given our objectives outlined above. OPTION 1: A framework seperation where each person is responsible for conceptual areas with overlap and discussion primarily in the integration areas. The integration areas would the responsibily of both developers as required. View prototypes (**Graphic designer**) | - Mockups | Views (Razor and view helpers etc) & Javascript (**Developer 1**) | - View models (Integration point) | Controllers and Application logic (**Developer 2**) | - Models (Integration point) | Domain model and persistence (**Developer 3**) PROS: Integration points are quite clear and so developers can work without dependencies on others fairly easily Code practices such as naming conventions and style is more easily managed in regards to consistancy as primarily only one developer will be handling an area CONS: Completion of an entire feature becomes a bit grey as no single person is responsible for an entire feature (story?) A person might not have a full appreciation for all areas of the project and so code overlap might be lacking if suddenly that person left. OPTION 2: A more task orientated approach where each person is responsible for the completion of the entire task from view - controller - model. PROS: A person is responsible for one entire feature so it's "complete" state can be clearly defined Code overlap into different areas will occur so each individual has good coverage over the entire application CONS: Overlap of development will occur in all the modules and developers can develop/extend without a true understanding of what the original code owner was intending. This could potentially lead more easily to code bloat? Following a convention might be harder as developers are adding to all areas of the project If a developer sets up a way of doing things would it be harder to enforce the other developers to follow that convention or even build on it (or even discuss it?). Dunno.. Bugs could more easily be introduced into areas not thought about by the developer It's easier to possibly to carry a team member in so far as one member just hacks code together to complete a task whilst another takes time to build a foundation that could be used by others and so help make future tasks easier i.e. starts building a framework? QUESTION: As it might appear I'm more in favor of option 1, however I'm interested to see how others might have approached this or what is the standard or best or preferred way of undertaking a project. Or indeed any different approach to handling this?

• OpenLDAP mirror mode replication failing with TLS behind a load balancer

  I have two OpenLDAP servers that are both running TLS. They are: ldap1.mydomain.com ldap2.mydomain.com I also have a load balancer cluster with a dns name of it's own: ldap.mydomain.com The SSL certificate has a CN of ldap.mydomain.com, with SANs of ldap1.mydomain.com and ldap2.mydomain.com. Everything works... Except mirror mode replication. • How to find cause of main file system going to read only mode

  Ubuntu 12.04 File system goes to readonly mode frequently. First of all I have read this question file system is going into read only mode frequently already. But I have to know if it's not caused by something else than dying hard drive. This is server provided by my client and I am just runing there some node.js workers + one node.js server and I am using mongodb. From time to time (every 20-50h) system suddenly makes filesystem read only, mongodb process fails (due read-only fs) and my node workers/server (which are started by forever) are just killed. • Using 1920x1200 mode on SyncMaster T260HD in Linux

  I just got a Samsung SyncMaster T260HD monitor. It works straight out of the box with Windows but I can't seem to get it to work with Linux, which is my primary OS for day to day work. The computer boots up but when going into graphical mode on Linux the monitor gives me a "Mode not supported" error and doesn't display anything. I booted up windows and, using PowerStrip, grabbed the exact ModeLine that should be used to get the equivalent setting in Linux and added it to my xorg config file but it doesn't seem to help. the ModeLine is: ModeLine "1920x1200" 153.9 1920 1984 2016 2080 1200 1203 1209 1235 +hsync -vsync This is the modeline for the working display settings in windows but it doesn't seem to work in Linux My complete entry in the xorg.conf file for the monitor is Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" ModelName "SyncMaster" DisplaySize 518 324 HorizSync 30.0 - 81.0 VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0 Option "dpms" ModeLine "1920x1200" 153.9 1920 1984 2016 2080 1200 1203 1209 1235 +hsync -vsync EndSection I'm running Scientific Linux 5.4 (clone of Redhat Enterprise Linux 5.4) but I've tried booting with a recent Linux Mint Distro as well as Ubuntu 9.04 and had the same problem. • How can I debug user mode driver failures in Windows 8

  I have a 32 GB SD Card. Whenever I insert this card in to my newly upgraded Windows 8 laptop the OS stops responding normally. Metro Apps won't work. The system may or may not log in. Desktop apps may or may not be able to do things. When I remove the card and restart then all is fine. As soon as I put the card back in, the system starts misbehaving again. I've run Windows Update, so I have the latest drivers from Microsoft. This does not occur with the 8 GB cards I have. Unfortunately I only have one 32 GB card, so I can't test with others. From examining the system event log I've determined this is happening due to a user mode driver failure. How can I best debug this issue from here? How can I figure out which driver this is related to? Will there be a Dr. Watson crash dump somewhere? • How do I repair a Windows 7 installation damaged by Windows 8 sleep mode

  I'm experimenting with a Windows 8 installation which is on a separate SSD. My actual Windows 7 installation I'm working with is on my old HDD. While Windows 8 was in sleep mode I swapped the hard disks and put in the Windows 7 HDD (I thought the computer was off). When I started the computer, Windows 8 started back up to the login screen – then it was stuck and some seconds later the computer rebooted. Now the Windows 7 Installation is damaged. When I boot, after the Windows 7 startup logo appears, a bluescreen shows up for few seconds stating: STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} The verification of KnownDLL failed. System process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000012f (0x00f0bb90 0x00000000). The system has been shut down. and then the computer reboots. The same happens in safe mode. 'Windows startup repair' cannot repair the issue. Any idea what could have happened exactly and/or how to repair this Windows 7 Installation?

• Setting "Run WWW service in IIS 5.0 isolation mode" does not persist in IIS 6

  Our IIS server was recently patched with the latest Microsoft Security Updates and since then, I am unable to enable the "Run WWW service in IIS 5.0 isolation mode" setting. This setting was enabled prior to patching and somehow changed during the updates. I have tried both using the IIS Manager console and the adsutil.vbs approach to change it. Either way, after resetting IIS for the change to take effect, when I go to verify that the isolation mode setting is enabled (true) I find that is reverts back to being disabled (false). Now... The patches have already been rolled back, however the setting still does not persist when I enable it. While I am trying to research the patches that were applied to see if there is a known issue (or perhaps a change in this setting's behavior) I was hoping someone else might have come across the same problem. • Windows Vista - Can Boot into Safe Mode Command Prompt, Cannot Access Flash Drive

  Hey there, Got a laptop dropped into my lap. Has Vista installed. Normal boot never gets past the login screen. Safe mode will get past, but just barely. I can try and start the task manager at that point, but it never opens. Only reliable way to do anything I've got is the safe mode command prompt... Boots up and logs in fine. I can't see anything noticably wrong via regedit, but it's been a long time since I've had to fix up a Windows box... not sure that I would. Problem I'm having, is that I want to run ComboFix/etc, but have no way to get them on there... When I pop a flash drive in, it seems to mount it (flash drive flickers as normal) but it never seems to be mounted... I cannot access it through any drive letter on the command line. I managed to start the device manager (devmgmt.msc) and the flash drive was recognized and listed... Any ideas on how to get this thing going again? (Short of a reinstall.) (It has no CD drive, either, so burning files to CD would not be easy...) Thanks! Adam

• Windows XP only loads in VGA mode, and crashes when raising resolution

  My kid's computer (Windows XP, SP3) started to (what appears to be) crash on boot. It will only boot in Safe or VGA mode, and if I try to raise the resolution from 640x480 it just reboots itself, and a error appears in the Event Log. When it loads up not in VGA mode, the monitor shuts off just after the windows logo is shown. It seems like windows is actually running but I can't see anything on screen (monitor is off for lack of signal). Nothing was installed recently that I know of, short of the usual windows updates. • How to use WPA2 client mode in the Linux-based Cisco WAP4410N access point

  I have a Cisco WAP4410N access point that I want to use as a client to connect to a WPA2 wireless network (for WLAN service monitoring purposes). Supposedly this access point supports a "Wireless Client/Repeater" mode that allows to do this. The Repeater function is optional (I have that box unchecked so that nobody can connect to this access point wirelessly). I have verified through SSH that the access point gets configured as a client and not as a Master. But it never associates to the SSID I ask it to. Besides, I would have to run those commands manually after every reboot. I'd like to know how to do this the Cisco way, if possible. If not, any trick to make this work would be useful. Edit: This is with the latest firmware, 2.0.4.2. And I found that not all of the filesystem is readonly, since /var and /tmp are mounted with type ramfs.

• SSH Interactive mode not working

  I have a Debian based linux server running for a year or so, without any problems. A couple of days ago, ssh interactive mode stopped working for no reason. I mean, I can open an ssh connection just fine, the server greets me with shell but I just can't type anything.   I bought a computer today and booted it up, but when I did I only got a blank screen. I checked to make sure it wasn't the monitor by connecting it to my old computer...it worked. I then tried connecting my monitor to both DVI ports and found that the bottom one did work. However, now it just boots up and says "loading windows" and then when the login screen is suppose to come up the screen just goes blank and monitor says "no input, check cord" (or something like that). I tried reinstalling windows and then I was able to log on normally. I used the CD's and reinstalled all the drivers, then rebooted...now I am stuck right back where I started. I tried taking out the RAM and inserting into different slots, that didn't fix anything. I was able to boot up into windows using safe-mode. I suspected that my ATI Radeon 6950 was the issue and downloaded the drivers, but I can't install them on safe-mode. Someone said to install C++ distr. and I tried doing that to fix driver installation problem of "failed to load detection driver" but it wouldn't let me do that either. Please someone help me, I don't want to have to deal with the evil redtape of sending it back to get a replacement! • Windows takes a very long time to shut down even in safe mode

  On Windows 7 the computer freezes for about 5 minutes once it gets to "Shutting down...". I can't remember when it started happening. I just lived with it for a while. The first thing I tried was a full scan using Microsoft Security Essentials. This did not solve the problem. I then went into msconfig and turned off everything I could get away with in the startup and services tabs. This did not solve the problem. I then uninstalled every program on this computer save the most basic programs. This did not solve the problem (did not uninstall drivers or catalyst). I then went through and turned off every single service and did a reboot. This did not solve the problem. I then booted into safe mode and just tried shutting it down. The problem even happens in safe mode. I have tried examining the event logs but with no success. They just say things like "blah blah has entered the stopped state" with no real clues about what program is causing me all this grief. *it may be worth noting that Ubuntu is installed on the same computer and the ubuntu boot loader is the one being used.
