  • Could someone explain in detail simplex /or perlin noise?

    - by Ryan Szemplinski
I am really interested in perlin/simplex noise but I am having a difficult time understanding it. I am not very good at math but I am willing to learn because it interests me greatly. If someone is willing to dedicate there time into this I would be immensely appreciative of this. To be more concise, an explanation of functions and some calculation inside the functions would be nice to understand. Thanks in advance!

  • How can I make eclipse look like VS.NET 2010?

    - by Juan Manuel
I am constantly switching between a project written in C# 4.0 and another one written in Java. I find it very difficult to read the code in Java, and I think it's because of its colors (or lack of them really) Is there any way to mimic the colors that VS.NET 2010 has inside eclipse? (even better would be to replace all its hotkeys for their equivalent in VS.NET, like ctrl+k for ctrl+f3, but I believe it would be utopic)

  • Why does it take so long to finalize the HTML 5 spec? [closed]

    - by EpsilonVector
I was reading this and one sentence caught my eye (emphasis mine): So Ian Hickson, XHTML’s biggest critic, fathered HTML 5, an action-oriented toddler specification that won’t reach adulthood until 2022, although some of it can be used today. Is that true? Is that really the HTML 5 development cycle? Why is it taking so long? What makes it so difficult to get right that it won't be final until 11 years from now?

  • Parent-child hierarchies and unary operators in PowerPivot

    - by Marco Russo (SQLBI)
Alberto wrote an excellent post describing how to implement the Unary Operator feature (which is present in Analysis Services) in PowerPivot (there was a previous post about parent-child hierarchies, too). I have to say that the solution is not so easy to implement as in Analysis Services, but it just works and, from a practical point of view, it is not so difficult to implement if you understand how it works and accept its limitations (only sum and subtractions are supported). I think that many...(read more)

  • Aspect-oriented Programming and Code Contracts in ASP.NET MVC

There are some aspects to application programming, such as logging, tracing, profiling, authentication and authorization that cut across the business objects. These are difficult to deal with in an object-oriented paradigm without resorting to code-injection, code-duplication or interdependencies. In ASP.NET MVC, you can use attributes in the form of action filters to provide a neater way of implementing these cross-curring concerns.

  • Optimal way to learn DirectX?

    - by BluePhase
I am finding it very difficult to learn DirectX 11. The MSDN website is just full of unorganized information that doesn't seem to help at all. I am particularly looking for something that explains many if not all aspects of developing with DirectX 11. I have been searching for weeks and still come up empty. I have found some books but they don't really explain the fundamentals of the language at all. Thanks in advanced.

  • OK, I have my database ready, now what's missing?

    - by fatherjack
During the life of any database there will be times when the development makes a change that breaks functionality of an object somewhere else in the database. SQL Server does a good job in some places of making this impossible, or at least really difficult, but in other places there isn't even a murmur as you execute a script that will bring your system processes out in a nasty plague of error messages. Where it works. If you try to create a view based on a table or column that doesn't...(read more)

  • Monitoring GWT Website

    - by Raf
We currently monitor our webapps using curl. More and more of our webapps use the GWT framework, which uses tons of javascript, and we can't rely on our curl system to monitor anymore. Therefore, we search the right tool to monitor, but it seems difficult to find a crawler which is light (no Selenium please) but handles javascript correctly. PS : we host our webapps as well as the probes, we don't want any Internet monitoring service.

  • How can I turn on compression for my IIS 7 web sites?

    - by Richard A
I am using IIS7 and trying to optimize as much as possible. I had one suggestion about compression but I am not sure how to turn this on. I am familiar with making changes to Web.Config but not sure about making IIS7 changes. What makes it more difficult is that I am using Windows Azure where new images are created every time I publish. Can someone explain if there's more than one way to turn on compression and how I can do it.

  • Has a multi player graphic adventure* ever been made?

    - by Petruza
By graphic adventure, I mean point & click LucasArts-type games. Those games have a mostly linear structure in nature, and usually don't offer as many variants as other games types like action, rpg, strategy, which makes this genre difficult to implement a multi-player feature. I'd like to know if there has been any attempts on doing such a thing, and if it would be viable, as players going offline or leaving a game in the middle would affect significantly the other players' game.

  • SIMD Extensions for the Database Storage Engine

    - by jchang
For the last 15 years, Intel and AMD have been progressively adding special purpose extensions to their processor architectures. The extensions mostly pertain to vector operations with Single Instruction, Multiple Data (SIMD) concept. The motivation was that achieving significant performance improvement over each successive generation for the general purpose elements had become extraordinarily difficult. On the other hand, SIMD performance could be significantly improved with special purpose registers...(read more)

  • SQL Server APPLY Basics

One of the most interesting additions to SQL Server syntax in SQL Server 2005 was the APPLY operator. It allows several queries that were previously impossible. It is surprisingly difficult to find a simple explanation of what APPLY actually does. Rob Sheldon is the specialist in simple explanations, so we asked him.

  • What are the advantages of storing xml in a relational database?

    - by Chris
I was poking around the AdventureWorks database today and I noticed that a number of tables (HumanResources.JobCandidate and Sales.Individual for example) have a column which is storing xml data. What I would to know is, what is the advantage of storing basically a database table row's worth of data in another table's column? Doesn't this make it difficult to query off of this information? Or is the assumption that the data won't need to be queried and just needs to be stored?

  • Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 - Part I

Office Communications Server, which provides integrated voice, conferencing, IM, and telephony, is one of those products that are difficult to explain in simple terms.
