  • Cloud Based Load Testing Using TF Service &amp; VS 2013

In this blog post I’ll walk you through, What is Cloud Based Load Testing? How have I been using this feature? – Success story! Where can you find more resources on this feature? What is Cloud Based Load Testing? It goes without saying that performance testing your application not only gives you the confidence that the application will work under heavy levels of stress but also gives you the ability to test how scalable the architecture of your application is. It is important to know how much is too much for your application! Working with various clients in the industry I have realized that the biggest barriers in Load Testing & Performance Testing adoption are, High infrastructure and administration cost that comes with this phase of testing Time taken to procure & set up the test infrastructure Finding use for this infrastructure investment after completion of testing Is cloud the answer? 100% Visual Studio Compatible Scalable and Realistic Start testing in < 2 minutes Intuitive Pay only for what you need Use existing on premise tests on cloud There are a lot of vendors out there offering Cloud Based Load Testing, to name a few, Load Storm Soasta Blaze Meter Blitz And others… The question you may want to ask is, why should you go with Microsoft’s Cloud based Load Test offering. If you are a Microsoft shop or already have investments in Microsoft technologies, you’ll see great benefit in the natural integration this offers with existing Microsoft products such as Visual Studio and Windows Azure. For example, your existing Web tests authored in Visual Studio 2010 or Visual Studio 2012 will run on the cloud without requiring any modifications what so ever. Microsoft’s cloud test rig also supports API based testing, for example, if you are building a WPF application which consumes WCF services, you can write unit tests to invoke the WCF service, these tests can be run on the cloud test rig and loaded with ‘N’ concurrent users for performance testing. If you have your assets already hosted in the Azure and possibly in the same data centre as the Cloud test rig, your Azure app will not incur a usage cost because of the generated traffic since the traffic is coming from the same data centre. The licensing or pricing information on Microsoft’s cloud based Load test service is yet to be announced, but I would expect this to be priced attractively to match the market competition.   The only additional configuration required for running load tests on Microsoft Cloud based Load Tests service is to select the Test run location as Run tests using Visual Studio Team Foundation Service, How have I been using Microsoft’s Cloud based Load Test Service? I have been part of the Microsoft Cloud Based Load Test Service advisory council for the last 7 months. This gave the opportunity to see the product shape up from concept to working solution. I was also the first person outside of Microsoft to try this offering out. This gave me the opportunity to test real world application at various clients using the Microsoft Load Test Service and provide real world feedback to the Microsoft product team. One of the most recent systems I tested using the Load Test Service has been an insurance quote generation engine. This insurance quote generation engine is,   hosted in Windows Azure expected to get quote requests from across the globe expected to handle 5 Million quote requests in a day (not clear how this load will be distributed across the day) There was no way, I could simulate such kind of load from on premise without standing up additional hardware. But Microsoft’s Cloud based Load Test service allowed me to test my key performance testing scenarios, i.e. Simulate expected Load, Endurance Testing, Threshold Testing and Testing for Latency. Simulating expected load: approach to devising a load pattern My approach to devising a load test pattern has been to run the test scenario with 1 user to figure out the response time. Then work out how many users are required to reach the target load. So, for example, to invoke 1 quote from the quote engine software takes 0.5 seconds. Now if you do the math,   1 quote request by 1 user = 0.5 seconds   quotes generated by 1 user in 24 hour = 1 * (((2 * 60) * 60) * 24) = 172,800   quotes generated by 30 users in 24 hours = 172,800 * 30 =  5,184,000 This was a very simple example, if your application requires more concurrent users to test scenario’s such as caching, etc then you can devise your own load pattern, some examples of load test patterns can be found here.  Endurance Testing To test for endurance, I loaded the quote generation engine with an expected fixed user load and ran the test for very long duration such as over 48 hours and observed the affect of the long running test on the Azure infrastructure. Currently Microsoft Load Test service does not support metrics from the machine under test. I used Azure diagnostics to begin with, but later started using Cerebrata Azure Diagnostics Manager to capture the metrics of the machine under test. Threshold Testing To figure out how much user load the application could cope with before falling on its belly, I opted to step load the quote generation engine by incrementing user load with different variations of incremental user load per minute till the application crashed out and forced an IIS reset. Testing for Latency Currently the Microsoft Load Test service does not support generating geographically distributed load, I however, deployed the insurance quote generation engine in different Azure data centres and ran the same set of performance tests to measure for latency. Because I could compare load test results from different runs by exporting the results to excel (this feature is provided out of the box right from Visual Studio 2010) I could see the different in response times.   • In rails, what defines unit testing as opposed to other kinds of testing

    Initially I thought this was simple: unit testing for models with other testing such as integration for controller and browser testing for views. But more recently I've seen a lot of references to unit testing that doesn't seem to exactly follow this format. Is it possible to have a unit test of a controller? Does that mean that just one method is called? What's the distinction? What does unit testing really means in my rails world?

  • A Community Cure for a String Splitting Headache

    A heartwarming tale of dogged perseverance and Community collaboration to solve some SQL Server string-related headaches. Michael J Swart posted a blog this week that had me smiling in recognition and agreement, describing how an inquisitive Developer or DBA deals with a problem. It's a three-step process, starting with discomfort and anxiety; a feeling that one doesn't know as much about one's chosen specialized subject as previously thought. It progresses through a phase of intense research and learning until finally one achieves breakthrough, blessed relief and renewed optimism. In this case, the discomfort was provoked by the mystery of massively high CPU when searching Unicode strings in SQL Server. Michael explored the problem via Stack Overflow, Google and Twitter #sqlhelp, finally leading to resolution and a blog post that shared what he learned. Perfect; except that sometimes you have to be prepared to share what you've learned so far, while still mired in the phase of nagging discomfort. A good recent example of this recently can be found on our own blogs. Despite being a loud advocate of the lightning fast T-SQL-based string splitting techniques, honed to near perfection over many years by Jeff Moden and others, Phil Factor retained a dogged conviction that, in theory, shredding element-based XML using XQuery ought to be even more efficient for splitting a string to create a table. After some careful testing, he found instead that the XML way performed and scaled miserably by comparison. Somewhat subdued, and with a nagging feeling that perhaps he was still missing "something", he posted his findings. What happened next was a joy to behold; the community jumped in to suggest subtle changes in approach, using an attribute-based rather than element-based XML list, and tweaking the XQuery shredding. The result was performance and scalability that surpassed all other techniques. I asked Phil how quickly he would have arrived at the real breakthrough on his own. His candid answer was "never". Both are great examples of the power of Community learning and the latter in particular the importance of being brave enough to parade one's ignorance. Perhaps Jeff Moden will accept the string-splitting gauntlet one more time. To quote the great man: you've just got to love this community!     i do the below java print command for this double variable double test=58.15; When i do a System.out.println(test); and System.out.println(new Double(test).toString()); It prints as 58.15. When i do a System.out.println(new BigDecimal(test)) I get the below value 58.14999999999999857891452847979962825775146484375 I am able to understand "test" double variable value is internally stored as 58.1499999. But when i do the below two System.out.println i am getting the output as 58.15 and not 58.1499999. System.out.println(test); System.out.println(new Double(test).toString()); It prints the output as 58.15 for the above two. Is the above System.out.println statements are doing some rounding of the value 58.1499999 and printing it as 58.15?

    I am trying to follow a BDD/TDD approach to developing an IntelliJ IDEA plugin, and in order to do a full acceptance test I want to exercise my plugin through the GUI. I know that I can do it using Window Licker, but looking at the commit log there hasn't been any activity since 2010. I see there are several other frameworks, but which are current and suited for TDD? If you have any experience with swing and TDD, please share those as well.

  • Why are there so many string classes in the face of std::string?

    It seems to me that many bigger C++ libraries end up creating their own string type. In the client code you either have to use the one from the library (QString, CString, fbstring etc., I'm sure anyone can name a few) or keep converting between the standard type and the one the library uses (which most of the time involves at least one copy). So, is there a particular misfeature or something wrong about std::string (just like auto_ptr semantics were bad)? Has it changed in C++11?

So for now, I put in _down() and _up() methods like so: alert( $E("hello man").uppercase()._down().replace("N", "Y")._up().dasherize() ); alert( "hello man"._enhance().uppercase()._down().replace("N", "Y")._up().dasherize() ); It works fine, but what I really want to do it be able to use all of the built-in functions a string can use. I realize I can just replicate each function inside my object, but I was hoping there was a simpler way. So question is, is there an easy way to do that? Thanks -

  • Can't connect to SSL web service with WS-Security using PHP SOAP extension - certificate, complex WSDL

    Using the PHP5 SOAP extension I have been unable to connect to a web service having an https endpoint, with client certificate and using WS-Security, although I can connect using soapUI with the exact same wsdl and client certificate, and obtain the normal response to the request. There is no HTTP authentication and no proxy is involved. The message I get is 'Could not connect to host'. Have been able to verify that I am NOT hitting the host server. (Earlier I wrongly said that I was hitting the server.) The self-signed client SSL certificate is a .pem file converted by openssl from a .p12 keystore which in turn was converted by keytool from a .jks keystore having a single entry consisting of private key and client certificate. In soapUI I did not need to supply a server private certificate, the only two files I gave it were the wdsl and pem. I did have to supply the pem and its passphrase to be able to connect. I am speculating that despite the error message my problem might actually be in the formation of the XML request rather than the SSL connection itself. The wsdl I have been given has nested complex types. The php server is on my Windows XP laptop with IIS. The code, data values and WSDL extracts are shown below. (The WSSoapClient class simply extends SoapClient, adding a WS-Security Username Token header with mustUnderstand = true and including a nonce, both of which the soapUI call had required.) Would so much appreciate any help. I'm a newbie thrown in at the deep end, and how! Have done vast amounts of Googling on this over many days, following many suggestions and have read Pro PHP by Kevin McArthur. An attempt to use classmaps in place of nested arrays also fell flat. So basically, if I have these lines: This is not a test This is a test Maybe a test Definitely not a test And I run the script with 'not', I need to entirely delete lines 1 and 4. I've been trying with: PS C:\Users\Admin (Get-Content "D:\Logs\co2.txt") | Foreach-Object {$_ -replace "3*Program*", ""} | Set-Content "D:\Logs\co2.txt" but it only replaces the 'Program' and not the entire line.

  • Problems manipulating strings through a stdcall to a dll

    I need to create a C++ dll that will be called from another program through stdcall. What is needed : the caller program will pass an array of string to the dll and the dll should change the string values in the array. The caller program will then continue to work with these string values that came from the dll. I made a simple test project and I am obviously missing something...     I am trying to make a method that will go through a list of generic objects and replace all their properties of type string which is either null or empty with a replacement. How is a good way to do this? Note: This could probably be done in a better way... using nested foreach and reflection and all here... but if you have any great alternative ideas, please let me know cause I want to learn!

(yes, I know this is not a very formal method) Now a new guy without experience are going to join our team. We think now is the momento to make a little list of things that all we should test in each form. Divided by categories. For example usability: Test that the taborder of each control are properly setted, or Valitacion: Test that the max lenght of each textbox match with the max lenght of a field in the DB...etc We don't one to Reinvent the Wheels, so I want to know if such kind of document already exists.
