  • Twitter API Voting System

    So I blatantly got this idea from the MIX 10 event. At MIX they held a rockband talent competition type thing (I’m not quite sure of all the details).    But the interesting part for me is how they collected votes. They used Twitter (what else, when you have a few thousand geeks available to you). The basic idea was that you tweeted your vote with a # tag, i.e #ROCKBANDVOTE vote Richard How cool….    So the question is how do you write something to collate and count all the votes?   Time to press the magic Visual Studio new Project button… Twitter has a really nice API that can be invoked from .NET.   This is the snippet of code that will search for any given phrase i.e #ROCKBANDVOTE   public static XmlDocument GetSearchResults(string searchfor) { return GetSearchResults(searchfor, ""); }   public static XmlDocument GetSearchResults(string searchfor, string sinceid) { XmlDocument retdoc = new XmlDocument();   try { string url = "http://search.twitter.com/search.atom?&q=" + searchfor; if (sinceid.Length > 0) url += "since_id=" + sinceid; HttpWebRequest request = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(url); request.Method = "POST"; request.ContentType = "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"; WebResponse res = request.GetResponse(); retdoc.Load(res.GetResponseStream()); res.Close();   } catch { } return retdoc; } } I’ve got two overloads, that optionally let you pass in the last ID to look for as well as what you want to search for. Note that Twitter rate limits the amount of requests you can send,  see http://apiwiki.twitter.com/Rate-limiting So realistically I wanted my app to run every hour or so and only pull out results that haven’t been received before (hence the overload to pass in the sinceid parameter). I’ll post the code when finished that parses the returned XML.

  • How to change System default language on GNOME3?

    I just installed GNOME3 on my Ubuntu. Everything worked fine till I restarted computer. Then I received a message if I want to change folders name to some other (different language, don't know what is this, but looks like Chinese). I pressed, 'keep old names' but it still changed all my folder names! And also the rest of the names. (like settings, and all that staff). So if you can give me the direction on where to click (cause all English names changed to non-English) and I simply don't know what does any of them means!

  • Stuck removing ffmpeg from system due to package problems

    I'd be very grateful to get a bit of support on the following situation: Using Ubuntu 12.04, and I used the PPA of Jon Severinson for ffmpeg. I had a problem playing movies with mplayer, so I decided to remove the PPA and try to use libav only after I read this article about libav vs ffmpeg. I first removed the PPA from the list, then apt-get update, etc. But I couldn't remove ffmpeg due to dependency-errors and got stuck in what seemed some kind of loop. Then I found a suggestion here. I followed the steps, and ended up force-removing libavcodec-extra-53. Because, apparently that was "what got stuff moving again". At the moment I can't. Now Ubuntu is reporting a broken package (BrokenCount 0).   • Telling a UITextField to become first responder while embedded in a UITableViewCell

    I have a UITextField that is a subview of a UITableViewCell. When my view loads, I want the text field to become first responder. I have a pointer to the text field in the table cell, so to do this I am trying: [myTextField becomeFirstResponder]; This returns NO all the time, regardless of when it's called, which according to the docs means the text field refused to become first responder... What am I doing wrong? Edit: The text field properly responds to being touched. It bring up the keyboard then. It's only when telling it to become first responder programmatically that the problem happens.

    I need to background load some WAV files for an HTML page using AJAX. I use AJAX to get the details of the WAV files, then use the embed tag, and I can confirm that the files have loaded successfully because when I set autostart to true, the files play. However, I need the files to play only when the user clicks on a button (or an event is fired). There are no errors, and the code just returns. I would have left it at that (that is - I would have convinced the client to convert all WAV's to MP3 and use MooTools). But I realized that I could play the sound files, which were not dynamically embeded. Thus, the same soundPlay function would work for a file embeded in the following manner: <embed src="/media/sounds/hug_sw1.wav" id="sound2" width="0" heigh="0" autostart="false" enablejavascript="true"/> anywhere within the HTML. And it plays well in all the browsers. Anyone have a clue on this? Is this some sort of undocumented security restriction in all the browsers? (Please remember that the files do get preloaded dynamically, as I can confirm by setting the autostart property to true - They all play). Any help appreciated.

    Hey, I have a ruby file as follows: module Example class Myclass def t_st "Hello World!" end end end now if this was just a class I would be able to use the following java code: ScriptEngine jruby = new ScriptEngineManager().getEngineByName("jruby"); jruby.eval(new BufferedReader(new FileReader("example.rb"))); Object example = jruby.eval("myclass.new"); However, this class rests inside a module. Calling the same code as above produces the error: Exception in thread "main" org.jruby.embed.EvalFailedException: uninitialized constant myclass In addition, calling: Object example = jruby.eval("Example"); The module returns no error. So one would assume this follows the format for Ruby. Object example = jruby.eval("Example::myclass.new"); Again however, I get the same error as before. Can anyone help? As there is little documentation on JRuby? Thanks

    I'm wondering if there is a good extant pattern (language here is Python/Django but also interested on the more abstract level) for creating a business logic layer that can be created without coding. For example, suppose that a house rental should only be available during a specific time. The thing is, it would have to be flexible enough to encompass a wide variety of rules: avoiding duplicates/overlaps (to continue the example "You already have a reservation for this time/location") logic rules ("You can't rent a house to yourself", "This house is in a different place from your chosen destination") sanity tests ("You've set a rental price that's 10x the normal rate. Are you sure this is the right price?" Things like that. Before I recreate the wheel, I'm wondering if there are already methods out there for doing something like this.

  • Installing Forms and Reports on a development system

    By popular demand I've resurrected / updated one of the old blog postings from Jan Carlin's Blog on GroundSide here. A recent (lengthy) post on the Forms forums chronicles the problems some of you have had installing F&R on a development machine. See the link in the headline of this post for the main one. When installing, here are some points to bear in mind: Download and install Weblogic Server first. http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/middleware/index.htmlFind the Forms and Reports (and Disco and Portal) zip files here. Download them to the desktop (or some other temporary directory of your choosing). Unzip both of the two zip files into the same new directory (maybe called 'stage') and check that you have 4 directories in the stage dir when you are finished unzipping: 'Disk1', 'Disk2', 'Disk3' and 'Disk4'. These folders are specified in the zip file structure and must be preserved for the setup executable to work. If you use WinZip and have a right click menu option that say "Extract to here", use that by right click-dragging the zip file onto the newly created directory. Don't use the "Extract to folder %HOME%\Desktop\ofm_pfrd...disk_1of2" option. That will get you into the trouble that was reported early in this thread. Free up as much memory as you can. Stop services and background processes and virus scanners and databases (you don't need a DB to install Forms) and other things lurking about on your machine. You can restart them when the install is done. Around 1.5 GB free real memory should do it. If it doesn't, free up more if you can. Don't change the swap space unless you know what you are doing. Let Windows handle it. A 1 GB machine will likely not be enough. You will likely need at least 2GB of RAM.Start the install with setup.exe from the 'Disk1' directoryChoose the Install and Configure option unless you have a good reason not to.Choose a unique instance name even if you deinstalled and removed the last install. I suggest using 'asinst_20090722_1' (today's date in ISO format with a running incremented number at the end if you install more than two times on a particular day).Unselect Portal and Discoverer and select the Builders you want.Unselect WebCacheUnselect OHS.Unselect the single sign-on option Check for any failures and choose the retry option if any occur. If that doesn't fix the problem, call Oracle Customer Support .

  • C++ Swig Python (Embedded Python in C++) works in Release but not in Debug

    Platform: Windows 7, 64 bit (x64), Visual Studio 2008 I chose Python & Swig binding as the scripting environment of the application. As a prototype, created a simple VS solution with main() which initializes Python (Py_Initalize, Py_setPyHome, etc) & executes test.py. In the same solution created another project which is a DLL of a simple class. Used SWIG to wrap this class. This DLL is the _MyClasses.pyd. test.py creates the objects of my class & calls its member functions. All this works like a charm in the Release mode. But does not work in Debug mode (even tried banging my head on the laptop ;-) ). Output of my work looks like this (in both release & debug): x64 -debug - _MyClasses.pyd - MyClasses.py - test.exe - test.py - python26.dll - python26_d.dll Note that the debug version is linked against python26_d.lib. Had to build python myself for this! test.py import MyClasses print "ello" m = MyClasses.Male("John Doe", 25) print m.getType() Male is the C++ class. When I add a value to the ObservableCollection, a NullReferenceException is thrown. Has anybody an idea why this happens?   • Android: RTL support - digits embedded in a right to left sentence (Hebrew)

    Hi There, My application displays Hebrew text which comes from a Web Service. When a sentence contains digits (in the middle of it), the digits appear in a mirror view: 29 appears as 92, 21:45 appears as 54:12 and 2,000 appears as 000,2. Also, when a sentence starts with digits or English characters, they get thrown to the end of the sentence messing it all up... Does anyone have an idea how can this be solved?     Can anyone post a tutorial here on how to show a Wikipedia article in a .NET WinForms application (C# or VB)? If the article can be placed in a string it suffices, there`s no need to put it on any control. I found some information on Wikipedia's API. After reading it, I added the reference to web service but can`t find a way to make this work. And if it's possible, explain how images are downloaded from wiki (link or image itself).
