• Ubuntu for Internet radio

  I am planning to set up a streaming server purely for internet radio using Icecast2. what software packages do i require during Ubuntu installation and any third party apps i may require. I am going to use BUTT(Broadcast using this tool) Encoder and would like to be able to run BUTT on any computer so that other people can broadcast to my server from anywhere. I am looking for tips or tutorials on how to achieve the above. I mainly need info on cofiguring Ubuntu Server and icecast2. Also GUI? if so what one. Preferablly lightweight. I am choosing Ubuntu for its level of security and reliability. I hope someone can help me as i plan to make this a community Radio station. Many Thanks Khz

• Why do we use to talk about addresses and memory of variable in C?

  Why do we use to talk about addresses and memory of variable in C, where in other languages (like in Java, .Net etc) we do not talk about variable address and memory in a program, we will directly use the variables. But in C Language we are listening the word address and memory. How to explain this? I hope C is high level language designed over the assembly language. So C is a thin layer over assembly language (in assembly language we will use memory locations to store a variable and track a variable). But in other languages these addresses and memory related things are wrapped in that specific language, so that we will not listen these words.

After the a while I started thinking it really hard, and if you go really in depth this is a very complex and interesting question to ask. YOu can even ask yourself if (heavy) internet (social) users are an subculture and programmers a culture within. I think it might be an interesting discussion, hope you like it! NOTE: I linked the wiki article because it might be a good baseline, maybe you can base you answer on Ken Gelder´s proposal to distinguish subcultures. • session indicator icon goes wrong after I upgrade to 12.10

  I upgraded my 12.04 to 12.10 yesterday, everything goes fine. But I found the little gear icon of session indicator was show incorrectly. I've re-installed the indicator-session package and changed to default theme but the problem remains. It's not a big problem but it is just annoying, hope you guys can help me! oops! • I just updated to 12.04 from 11.10 and now the Unity bar is very sluggish and even the menus do not show on the panel

  Like the title says, I just upgraded to 12.04, I know it is only beta but I'm having problems with the Unity bar and the panel with the menus. First the Unity bar is acting very sluggish..I really don't know how to explain it. Also with the menu at the top, it keeps a strange little black bar on everything, even across my tabs in Firefox, it also doesn't let me see any of the menus, well they flicker and you sort of have to guess where everything is. I'm at a loss, I've already ran updates a couple of times to see if I missed something. I really hope I don't have to completely redo my whole Ubuntu setup. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Blank desktop after updates today, only unity2d works now [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Unity doesn't load, no Launcher, no Dash appears I have been using 12.04 (wubi) since a week now and this is my 1st exposure to linux. Everything was going on fine till now , but today as soon as I updated through the update manager , docky gave a message that compositing is required or something, and i got an error window which asked me to report the error and then the update manager asked me to reboot. After rebooting , i just get a blank desktop screen , no launcher, no toolbar. I have to restart with the power key. However if i login through Unity 2d everything is fine except the benefits of the 3d environment. I guess something got messed up after the update and i cant figure out which program or file caused this mess. I would highly appreciate if someone could help me out with this as I really liked working on ubuntu after windows 7. Thanks! SOLVED-- Thanks @jrg for the link provided.. it helped me to come out of this mess. Actually some update of compizconfig made the unity plugin inactive did something to the Animation add ons , the one which you use for the burn effect etc. What i did was : On the blank desktop Pressed keys Ctrl + Alt + T to bring up the terminal and typed ccsm This brought up the compiz config system manager, there i enabled the unity plugin and rebooted. Everything started working fine. But then again when i started the addons plugin ,everything went back to square one.. :( . This time pressing Ctrl + Alt + T also did not help. Then i tried Ctrl + Alt + F1 , it brought up a terminal or whatever u call it, and then i typed unity --reset , it did some resetting and in the end it showed some comositing done , I pressed Ctrl + Alt + F7 to come back to the desktop , and here it was , my old sweet desktop.. it had the animation effects too like wobbly windows, excepting the addons like the burn effect, i guess something got wrong with the last update of that addon plugin and now whenever i try turning that on , everything goes poof!! 6 hours wasted , but i guess i learnt something new.. not bad for an orthodontist i guess :))

  If I run a query on the Google Analytics API and set the dimension to ga:pagePathLevel1 and the metric to ga:avgTimeOnPage, I get results like this: { pagePathLevel1: /about, avgTimeOnPage: 28 }, { pagePathLevel1: /contact, avgTimeOnPage: 10 } I'm not completely sure how to interpret this. Is the value of avgTimeOnPage the average time spent by any user on all pages that match that path? Or is 28 seconds the average time spent by any user on any single page that matches that path? I'm looking for the average time spent across all pages matching that path, but the time estimates look shorter than I'd expect. I hope that question makes sense! Please tell me if it doesn't.

• Windows Embedded Compact 7 in Padua

  Yesterday I did a presentation about Windows CE at the University of Padua Even if the picture seems to suggest that I just showed and empty slide, I illustrated the new features of the OS and did a quick demo of Silverlight for Windows Embedded on Windows Embedded Compact 7 (I’ve to get used to this new name), showing the new tools that provide a better integration between Expression Blend and Visual Studio for the development of Silverlight applications (I hope to be able to write more on this topic soon!). The Operating System was running on some real hardware (TI OMAP3530 evaluation board) and many people had a chance to interact with the new customizable shell. Most of the 60 people attending were still awake at the end of the one hour and a half session, and some of them even asked questions! I would like to thank all the people attending and all the people of Arrow, Fortech Embedded Labs and the University of Padua that made this event possible and provide me the tool and the time to do this presentation. • Ubuntu Software Center is crashing while trying to install psychonauts

  I am having a problem installing Tim Schafers epic platform video game Psychonauts trough the Ubuntu Software Center. I have bought the game on http://www.humblebundle.com/ and I have used the new redeem option introduced in this bundle: "redeem your bundle on the Ubuntu Software Center." When I have downloaded approximately 2.1 GB of Psychonauts then Ubuntu Software Center starts to repeatedly crash and pop-up with a new crash report dialog every few seconds (before previous ones are closed and that will crash the computer after a few min, unless I stop the download). I also have a file-size bug, where Ubuntu Software Center tells me that I have downloaded 880,2 MB out of 133,3 MB I use the new Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Ubuntu Software Center version 5.2.2.2 (©2009-2011 Canonical <--- That is also a bug, should be 2012 I guess) I hope someone can help me.

• What is the best technical ebook reader? [closed]

• Framework for interaction between web-page and server-side script

  I want to make a web-page that will have several controls elements, among which there are elements like check-boxes, radio-buttons, "range selectors" (one can specify the min and max value, like it is done when you select range for prices in the online markets). The new values shall be sent to the "server-side", once changed (without any Submit buttons etc), and the "server-side" can return something (one or more numbers, etc). Does anyone know a good ajax-like framework that allows (with minimal adaptation / changes) to make such solution in an easy way? It will be good if the server-side of existing solution will be in Perl (not a big deal, but I know it much better than PHP or something else). Set of controls might change and depend on other parameter, so adding one extra element should not cause rewriting the whole thing. P.S.: I haven't working in this area for quite a while, so not aware of existing solutions in this area, and don't want to invent the wheel and write everything from scratch for something that already exist (at least, I hope so). • How can I convince a project manager that there is no way to solve all the compatibility issues?

  I have been working on this project for more than a year now, and we are close to release, the project manager wants the product to be perfect and working in every single aspect. I like that and I love working under the perfection idea, but it seems he is delaying the launch too much because of compatibility issues, he wants the product to work in every single installation, every single configuration possible, and in most cases, the product just works without issues when it's on the hands of the client. UPDATE : yes the product doesn't work properly when there are conflicts, for example, other products that don't use guidelines nor standards to load libraries (causes double library load which leads to failure), cache is another example and so on..... but we warn the clients about the conflict before purchasing and help them fixing it after purchasing I've tried to explain it by giving some examples on major products, he understands the situation, but can not believe that it is near impossible (if it is not impossible) to do what he wants. Hope it is clarified enough for the community to answer.

  I have a problem with the new Ubuntu 12.10. • How to calculate production when player is offline

  What is the best way to do for example food growth based on how many food buildings you have? Lets say I have a webbased game where you can build a farm wich generates 60 food units per hour. A player has 1 farm in his possession. What is the best way to keep on producing these units even when the player is offline? Should I do the math when the player get's back online again? If so..how can I do this without having to save his last online time every 5 seconds so I can do some maths with it when he logs back in (datetime.now - lastonlinetime)? Next thing is when the player is online, should I refresh his resource count every 5 seconds or so by going to the database and back? This would seem weird to do for every logged on player. • How to create website shortcuts on the desktop / in a folder using Chrome?

  Help with something really basic, which I am unable to figure out. In Windows creating a shortcut (link) for a website is as easy as dragging-and-dropping the favicon/address bar to the desktop or a folder. I tried the same in Ubuntu (Chrome browser), but it's not working. The web page is being saved as a file, but not as a link/shortcut. Am I missing something or is there no way to quickly create shortcuts to web pages/web sites without installing some app for that? If the above is true, is there an app that does what I need? I hope I am clear enough.

  When i first installed ubuntu 12.04 everything worked fine. All of a sudden my sound has stopped working!! This has happened before [like 2 days ago], however the next day it started working again. I've tried loading earlier kernels [3.2.0 ] but that hasn't helped. I've tried playing with alsamixer, unmuting and raising volume, doesn't work I've tried playing with pauvcontrol, doesnt work. Althought, strangely, when i play a song, under output i can see a bar moving implying that something is working, just the sound isn't getting through my speakers. Thus it might be a hardware problem. I've tried unistalling and reinstalling pulsaudio annd alsamixer, doesn't work [maybe made it worse...]. I've heard reverting back to kernel 3.0... works, but i'm reluctant to try that[i dont know much about kernels]. Thank you. Please tell me what other information you need. EDIT: My audio has started working again after another reboot. However this time im not connected to my external audio on startup. I will see if this is the issue next time i'm at home Edit: Connecting to external audio is not the problem.

• Switching to an external display, when primary is broken

  I've successfully install Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop (x86) on an old(er) laptop that unfortunately has a broken screen, so there is an external monitor plugged in. On the livecd it come up on the secondary display just fine and I was able to install ubuntu and everything. Unfortunately when I reboot into Ubuntu proper now, the secondary display is off and I'm literally driving blind here trying to switch it to the secondary display. Using Nvidia open source drivers. Things I've tried: Rebooting back into livecd, mounting the partition and trying in vain to find a config file (it uses the open source drivers so no Xorg.conf I could edit manually) Trying to blind-type xrandr settings into what I hope is terminal: xrandr --output VGA1 --auto (nothing happened) Trying to blind install openssh-server so I could ssh into it and maybe configure it from my working computer. For some reason though, no luck. Ubuntu really should default to expanding to all screens for this use case.

Note: I have already tried installing IE in Ubuntu 10.10 and later versions (12.04) with Wine. It works fine. But I don't get success installing Windows Media Player. Hope someone will solve my problem. It will be great if someone gives me a neat solution for installing IE and WMP in Ubuntu (10.10 or later).

• GMail API for a small app (Rails? Javascript? PHP?)

  I want to create an app that accesses the GMail API, but I'm finding that it isn't as simple as I thought it might be. I'm hoping somebody in the community here might have some experience working with one of these API's and could not only recommend the right solution, but also show me to some tutorials or examples that could help me get up and running. Here are some of the requirements of this app: Preferably in Rails or Javascript or even PHP. I am open to other technologies as well, but hope they'd be easy to implement. Connects to gmail via Oauth Can read who emails have been sent to and received from. Basically would like to perform some analytics on who emails are sent to, when and how frequently. I've read that one reason why this isn't easy, and why there isn't an official javascript API provided by gmail, is that google is concerned it's going to make their service less performant for their users.

• Multiple ( V- / I- ) Buffers, is it sane?

  Currently I am developing an RTS game using XNA ( / ANX.Framework ). There is one thing bothers me. I am not sure in what way or how to organise Buffers. Should I use a new Vertexbuffer for any object ( e.g. a Char, a Table, an model ) or is it better to use ONE HUGE/ BIG Buffer to store any geometry in? I am still new to 3D Programming though I finished yet couple games using DirectX 9. Well, I hope this question qin't a duplicate and I appreciate any answer leading me into the right direction.

• eth0 not working on startup

  Hi to all, This might sound strange but, working with my Lubuntu 10.04 i've experienced troubles when connecting to my eth0 newtwork. After some googling, i've found out that by writting in the CLI the following command: mii-tool eth0 -F 10baseT-FD and activating the eth0 in the toolbar (by clicking "activate eth0") everything works just fine. Well, up to now, i did not have any problem, because every time i turned on the computer i had to do this, but it was very little effort.But now, i would like to use the machine as a file server, accesing it by ssh, without monitor or keyboard. So, i won't be able to make this actions, and can't do this at startup because mii-tool needs root permissions. So, the question is: Do you know what does that command do, and how can id make that change permanent? Or do you know any other solution for my problem? I hope i was clear! If not, tell me and i'll try to be as clearer as possible. Thanks in advance!
