• How to force a resolution in linux?

  I have a HP LP3065 that requires a dual link dvi cable to go up to 2560x1600 resolution. However, I do not have that cable, but I want to use 1920x1200 resolution. However, my nVidia Display Settings (also system display settings) will only go up to 1280x1024, which looks horribly pixelated on the 30". How do I force the 1920x1200 resolution? I tried adding the mode into my xorg.conf file, but it still would not take it. I know my vid card can do 1920x1200 since it works on the 24" monitor with the same dvi cable. • Configuring Server with no monitor

  Sitting in front of me is an HP DL 380 Generation 4 with no monitor. I'd like to install an OS on the thing but for reasons obvious, I can't. I got excited when I found the ILO port on the back but unless you have a subscription it has limited functionality. I was thinking maybe there was some software out there that booted into some kind of remote access server? When I tested it with a monitor (A friends) I set the BIOS to boot from USB so anything I can load onto a stick should boot. Ideas? Hacks?

I have removed the LCD panel and I can see 2 cables , one power and other video signal Can I buy a 14.1" LAPTOP and fit to this ? 14.1 WXGA seems very common .   I have a Buffalo AirStation WZR-HP-G301NH I am able to access it's settings via 192.168.11.1 I'm connecting wirelessly with toshiba i686 laptop on Linux Mint Debian with service pack 3 and i686 dual core kernel This is just my home network but I know that there must be a way for large industries to shut their networks down or lock out their network access temporarily based on a time schedule, automatically. Like mon - fri the network provides access from 8am to 10pm and then automatically shuts down. I want this to affect all the computers accessing this netowork... basically all my families computers so that the internet just automatically shuts down at bedtime. I am running Linux Mint Debian and so maybe I need to make a cron job or something but does anyone know how big industries implement this and how I can do it privately? TIA

• Laptop Touch-pad stops working after reattaching parts

  I was trying to replace my LCD screen for the first time, and it was a very hard process to do. I had to unscrew everything from the bottom of the laptop (Ram, HD, etc) and detach everything that was under the keyboard. After reattaching the LCD, putting everything back together, the touch-pad has stop working. Everything works except for that. Anybody know why it stopped working? I have an HP G61-429WM Laptop. Sorry if this was the wrong place to ask.

• Why is windows 7 marking all my extra RAM as "hardware reserved"?

  I have a new HP Z800 Workstation, running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit. The machine has 4GB of RAM -- windows reported 1.99GB available, 2GB was "hardware reserved". I added another 2 GB and windows reports that there is 6GB of physical RAM, but now 4GB is "hardware reserved". The BIOS sees the full RAM amount as well. The video card is an nVida Quadro FX 580, so it shouldn't be using any shared memory at all. whats going on? Z800 Specs are here.

• Which driver for "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650" in a laptop?

  We have some HP laptops here that comes equipped with a video card that identifies itself as "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650", like this one. However, which drivers do we choose? As far as we can tell, HD 3650 is desktop cards, or at least there are no drivers listed for that series with "Mobility" in their name. If I pick the following on the ATI Driver Download page: Graphics Windows Vista 32-bit Edition Mobility Radeon Then the dropdown for the card model contains X300, X600, X700, X800, X1300, X1400, X1600, X1800, 9600, 9700 and 9800 models, but no "HD" nor "36xx series". However, if I change to just "Radeon" for the last selection there, I can find a "Radeon HD 3600 Series" model in the list. Also, if I pick "Windows 7" as the operating system, I can find a "Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series" card, but no 3600. So, which one to pick? The main reason I ask is that they all seem to have some kind of problem installing, so neither seems to be the right one (they all crash with "Catalyst Install Manager has stopped working".)

• VMXNET3 nic loses the ability to update ARP table after N hours

  I have a fedora 18 VM that stops updating the arp table on eth1 after running for a number of hours to days. There are other VMs on the same hypervisor that can access all of the same networks without issue. A tcpdump of the offending NIC shows only ARP broadcasts but no responses. None of the other VMs on the vDS see the ARP broadcasts from the offending NIC. The only way I can currently solve the problem is to reboot the VM and then everything works for a while. I've tried changing the port on the vDS and even flipping the network configurations after I lose eth1's ARP table, but the ARP problem follows eth1 but I can access the machines that were originally on eth1. If I statically add the arp entries for machines on the same subnet I have no problems with connectivity. The Hypervisor is an HP BL49X series with flex-10 network modules. Has anyone seen anything like this before?

• Is anyone else using OpenBSD as a router in the enterprise? What hardware are you running it on?

  We have an OpenBSD router at each of our locations, currently running on generic "homebrew" PC hardware in a 4U server case. Due to reliability concerns and space considerations we're looking at upgrading them to some proper server-grade hardware with support etc. These boxes serve as the routers, gateways, and firewalls at each site. At this point we're quite familiar with OpenBSD and Pf, so hesitant at moving away from the system to something else such as dedicated Cisco hardware. I'm currently thinking of moving the systems to some HP DL-series 1U machines (model yet to be determined). I'm curious to hear if other people use a setup like this in their business, or have migrated to or away from one.

• Mutli-processor workstation as a workstation/server

  I work in a research institute and a number of programs we use are computationally intensive (I actually wrote one of them). Right now we have one computer that is dedicated for one of these programs (with local accounts only, as in users physically sitting in front of that pc) and the other programs are run on individual workstations assigned to people. I have been looking around to common brands such as Dell and HP, for a some sort of a small/medium scale server, which can be used as a workhorse by sending tasks remotely. It appears as if there is nothing in between workstations with one 6-core processor and a bunch of extras (like fancy graphics etc) and rack mount servers with ridiculous amount of RAM and HDD expansion capabilities but still relatively little number of processors/cores. I wonder if what I am looking for is such a small niche product? Are there other solutions that I might not be aware of? Does anyone know of a multi proc- multi-core workstation/server that is still within the reasonable

  At the moment I am running a Windows Terminal Server 2008 for around 10 clients that use the server to run programs and access data. Is there anyway to separate the resources of each user so that they do not impact each other in terms of resources. User 1: Opens program User 2: Notices slow down I have looked into using Windows System Resource Manager but do not know if it provides what I need and if there are any other 3rd party tools that also provide this functionality.   Hi guys. I'm appologizing in advance to the guys who will tell me this isn't a tech/server/IT issue! But I've been beating my head around this for a couple of days now. I'm trying figure out who to talk to, or which company I can approach to try to see if there are Grid/Cloud Computing companies who have programs setup to deal with colleges. I'm dealing with a compsci course, and we're looking at a few projects that would require a great deal of computing/computational resources. But in calling different companies (HP/Rackspace/etc..) I'm either not getting through to the right depts, or to the right people, or the companies just aren't setup for this. There are plenty of companies who have discounts for desktop software/hardware, but who in the biz deals with discounts/offerings for Cloud/Grid Computing solutions??   in LVM1 there was a limit of 65k extends. So size of extent had to been chosen carefully between wasted space on partitions (to big extent) and maximal possible size of logical volume (too small extent). in lvm2 (according to http://docstore.mik.ua/manuals/hp-ux/en/5992-4589/apa.html) the limit is ~16 million extents. so the default size of 4mb gives ~60TB of LV size. so is there any point in making the extent larger than 4-16mb on a desktop? is there any performance degradation or other costs of having big number of extents?

• Windows 2008 Print Server issue

  I have a dedicated windows 2008 server I use as a file server and print server at my home office. Whenever I print documents from one of my clients, I see the document hit the queue on the server immediately (says its in "printing" status), but it takes FOREVER to print out (like over 5 minutes). But, printing the same document locally from the server takes 4 seconds. It's an HP 1006P laser printer. I am running 32-bit 2008 Server. Installed the Vista drivers ( updated to latest version ). Tried updating the drivers on the clients too and no dice. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot?

• Unable to edit CIFS Share permissions

  Hi, I have this backup Disk to disk device HP Storageworks 2540i. Managing the device is via a web interface. I joined the device into our AD domain in the CIFS server configuration. I then created a CIFS share called backupdata. If I try to access it I'm prompted for a login. The permissions tab in the web interface is empty. The following message is displayed. "CIFS Authentication is managed through Active Directory" However I do not find the share in AD. I forced replication between all DCs and I do not find it. Is there another way to edit the permissions?

  i was wondering whether we can use logstash or any other opn source or free Log management too to collect,index the data and then feed this index into RSA envision or any other enterprise SIEM tool. Will this be beneficial in any way? Also are the indexes of various Log Management and SIEM tools -- splunk,RSA envision,HP Arcsight Logger and Logstash etc compatiable with each other. My organization is planning to buy RSA envision appliance and is there any way to restrict or select only certian type of log files eg: security logs or apache logs .. so that onlt those are monitored and this will reduce the EPS(events per second).

• Wrong PC-projector resolution in Windows 7

  I'm connecting a PC-projector (Benq MP721) to a Windows 7 Professional laptop (HP 6730b). All the output settings on the laptop, including the laptop screen, changes to 1024x768 (which the projector supports). However the projector says it receives 1360x768 and asks me to change the resolution to 1024x768. I'm using mirrored display. The laptop is 1024x768 The screen resolution in the control panel says 1024x768 The Intel graphics card utilities says 1024x768 The driver for the projector is a Generic PnP Monitor Is there anything in Windows 7 that would convert my 4:3 resolution to wide screen automatically?

  I have just purchased a new HP dv7t-7000 and I would like to run Windows 7 / Ubuntu. How do I setup the dual boot? Can I install both operating systems with an 8gb USB drive? Can I still make use of the 32gb SSD? I'm unfamiliar with the efficacy of using an SSD for caching with a 750gb 7200rpm sata 3 drive. I can only see using it for windows 7 - which I have installed in order to play games. Thank you!

• Why DELL PowerConnect and Juniper are so rare ? Why do enterprises stick with Cisco ?

I have a little question, I'm actually studing IT in France, and when looking on alternative on the very [...] very expensive Cisco equipments, I've found Juniper and DELL PowerConnect pretty attractive on features and price, but I rarely see something else than the classics Cisco/LinkSys, HP Procurve and Netgear.. Why it's so rare to find those switch ? They looks really great but... I've never seen any Juniper or Powerconnect... Why do enterprises stick with the expensive Cisco ? I've tried to find how to buy both, it's quite easy with PowerConnect, everything is on the DELL website, but it looks it's very hard to find Juniper equipments in France :( Thank you !

• Stuck in power saving mode

  I've got an LG monitor I tried attaching to my laptop for dual monitor goodness and it worked fine but when I tried attaching it back to the desktop it stuck in "Power Saving mode" and wouldn't go away. The CPU's starting up but nothing happens with the monitor. I try attaching it back to the laptop and it works fine again. I don't understand what could have happened. For reference, the laptop I'm using is an HP laptop with nVidia GT240M video card running on an i7 processor while the desktop runs on a Dual Core processor with an nVidia 9400GT video card. I've never had problems like these with other monitors I've attached my pc to. Anyone got any ideas?

• IP KVM switch, or serial console box for remote admin?

  We have a small server farm (11 now, may add more in the future) of HP Proliant DL160 G6s. They all run either Linux (server only, no X11) or VMware ESX. We had intended to get models with iLO, in case BIOS-level remote admin became an issue, but that didn't happen. I had an IP KVM switch recommended to me (along with some sort of Remote Reboot hardware.) I've since realized that none of our machines need GUI administration, so perhaps a serial console switch would be a cheaper and more appropriate option. Should we go for the ease of setup (plug and go, instead of turning on the feature in the BIOS and making sure the serial settings are correct) and the flexibility of an IP KVM switch even with the extra cost?   I just got my Arch / Windows 7 dual-boot setup running... except for one thing. I have an HP dv6-3127dx laptop, which is an issue when it comes to Linux because it does not have a traditional touchpad, but a "ClickPad." This means where the left and right buttons exist, it is also sensitive to moving the pointer. The issue comes in when I try to steady the mouse with one finger, while clicking the left click with another, because the mouse freaks out. It's also an issue because it's not recognizing the right click whatsoever. I am currently using the default Synaptics drivers downloaded from pacman on Arch Linux, running Linux v2.6.36. EDIT: The question of course is, how can I fix this?

• Can I replace a broken PSU with one of a smaller size?

  I have a broken OEM power supply unit that is cooked. I'm browsing online to find a replacement and am happy to see that they don't cost too much -- the only thing is they all seem to have varying sizes. Is it a problem if I get a PSU that is smaller than the original one? This is going in an HP Pavillion a000, it's about five and a half years old -- I don't know if that means anything, I just thought there might be some recent standardized dimensions for PSUs or something. No idea.

  I have HP laptop 6730S with two Operating systems : Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit Centos 6.4 64Bit The GRUB2 is not installed in MBR, use Windows' bootloader. After I choose Windows in the start, the blue-screen appears with unmountable_boot_volume problem so I tried some help from similar questions here ( use Command Prompt and enter the following command: chkdsk /R C: ). But the problem is, I can't get repair my computer it took so long and nothing happened after I waited more than 2H and when I put my Windows 7 DVD to boot it charge the files then same thing happened nothing show up so I couldn't use command prompt. But when I use Centos everything works just fine the D partition i can mounted normally but C partition it shows me error and tell me to go to windows and repair it with Chkdsk command and here is where I am stuck.

• force other screen on boot

  I have a multi-boot Windows 7 (32bit & 64 bit) on my HP Notebook. Unfortunately, the Notebook screen has been trashed (due to daughter dropping it). So I have attached a second screen. On the 64 bit system, after windows has started, the logon screen comes up on the 2nd monitor just fine. On the 32 bit system, the logon screen still comes up on the Notebook monitor and I have to open the lid, and shut it so that it then switches to the attached screen. In both cases the display has been set to only display on the attached screen (ie if I "identify" the attached screen says: '1'). Is there any setting I can use to force the OS to use the attached screen? TIA, Paolo
