• Deleted entire harddisk. Now my laptop won't boot anything and stuck at grub rescue!

  My laptop is Dell Inspiron N4030. I used to use Ubuntu 12.04 and it was on the entire hard drive. I tried to install windows 7 but my laptop couldn't install it. So, I decided to delete the entire hard drive and do a fresh install of Windows 7. But after deletion I immediately removed the gparted live usb which I was using to delete the partitions of my hard drive. And then tried booting from windows 7 cd, didn't work, tried ubuntu live cd, didn't work, tried hiren's boot cd, didn't work, tried super grub disk, didn't work. Probably I'm not doing it right. Help needed badly.

• Is Innovation Dead?

  My question is has innovation died?  For large businesses that do not have a vibrant, and fearless leadership (see Apple under Steve jobs), I think is has.  If you look at the organizational charts for many of the large corporate megaliths you will see a plethora of middle managers who are so risk averse that innovation (any change involves risk) is choked off since there are no innovation champions in the middle layers.  And innovation driven top down can only happen when you have a visionary in the top ranks, and that is also very rare.So where is actual innovation happening, at the bottom layer, the people who live in the trenches…   The people who live for a challenge. So how can big business leverage this innovation layer?  Remove the middle management layer.   Provide an innovation champion who has an R&D budget and is tasked with working with the bottom layer of a company, the engineers, developers  and business analysts that live on the edge (Where the corporate tires meet the road). Here are two innovation failures I will tell you about, and both have been impacted by a company so risk averse it is starting to fail in its primary business ventures: This company initiated an innovation process several years ago.  The process was driven companywide with team managers being the central points of collection of innovative ideas.  These managers were given no budget to do anything with these ideas.  There was no process or incentive for these managers to drive it about their team.  This lasted close to a year and the innovation program slowly slipped into oblivion…. A second example:  This same company failed an attempt to market a consumer product in a line where there was already a major market leader.  This product was under development for several years and needed to provide some major device differentiation form the current market leader.  This same company had a large Lead Technologist community made up of real innovators in all areas of technology.  Did this same company leverage the skills and experience of this internal community,   NO!!! So to wrap this up, if large companies really want to survive, then they need to start acting like a small company.  Support those innovators and risk takers!  Reward them by implementing their innovative ideas.  Champion (from the top down) innovation (found at the bottom) in your companies.  Remember if you stand still you are really falling behind.Do it now!  Take a risk!

• How can I repair a corrupt kernel if no others are installed?

  I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop for quite some time. When I went to boot it up this morning, BAM! kernel panic (which immediately lead to human panic) when loading the kernel. So I've spent much of the day troubleshooting, and my current theory is that the FS is fine, but that the kernel image may be corrupt. Let's go with this current theory for the sake of this question, as I am interested how it is done. How can I replace the kernel image if I have no bootable kernels? Can I boot to a 10.04 live CD, copy the the vmlinuz-2.6.3x... to the HD and go from there? Wouldn't I want to copy the initramfs as well, but configured for the desktop system? Can I generate this from the live CD?

• Radeon HD5670 hangs after login

  Thanks in advance for your advices. I installed, Ubuntu 12.04 today, on my PC with a Radeon hd5670 graphics card. The first error I encountered, (just like the first time Unity came out - after witch I waited to try Ubuntu again until now) is, that it hanged after login at the desktop wallpaper, with only the mouse cursor. Well actually the first problem was with the live CD, but I managed to install it, using the install now, not the try now. Live CD has the same problem, as after install. So, after installing and getting the error, I searched of course before asking this:) I found this: Ubuntu hangs at purple screen The accepted answer there helped me to get to this. (note, that the below picture is a screen taken from a working desktop, and then erased the parts that don't show on mine.) Note that there is nothing at the top except the brown bar. No shutdown button, no nothing. The system hangs, I can't click on anything, I can only wiggle around with my mouse XD

  After upgrading from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 i am getting this message on boot up: Mount of File System Failed. A maintenance shell will now be started. CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and retry. myusername@root:~$ After searching in google,i found out that i have to run the command fsck on the OS partition from ubuntu Live CD.. Here are my questions: 1) I dont know in which partition my ubuntu OS is installed..(Those are not user-friendly drive names to remember right :)) -- Is there any command to know in which partition my ubuntu os is installed? 2) Can i do this from Ubuntu 10.04 live CD? • Ubuntu installer thinks my drive is empty, does not see windows paritions.

  Hello, I am trying to install Ubuntu10.10 64bit. I just installed Windows 7 64bit moments ago. My drive is currently partitioned like so: 100MB Boot partition (automatically made by windows 7 installer) 390GB Windows partition ~1.6TB free space When I go through the Ubuntu installer it does not give me the option to install alongside another operating system. My only options are to use the entire disk or to specify partitions manually. When I chose to specify partitions manually it tells me that the drive is all free space! Windows is still booting and behaving normally, and I had not doing anything in Windows yet (had simply installed, booted for first time, then immediately restarted). I am even able to mount the windows partition within Ubuntu Live CD, and see it in the disk viewer (not gparted). Gparted in Ubuntu Live CD again reports no partitions, all free space. Not sure what to do :S. I have installed Windows7 alongside Ubuntu countless times, even Ubuntu 10.10. Thank you very much for your help :).

• Xubuntu keeps loading on install with usb stick

  I'm trying to install Xubuntu on my computer. I've followed a guide to create a USB bootable drive. I've inserted the USB stick and started the computer. I can see Xubuntu loading and after a minute or 2 it shows me a screen asking me if I'd like to use the live version or if I'd like to install. I choose install. Then on the next screen I select English as language. When I click continue, Xubuntu just keeps loading. It doesn't really freeze as I can still quit and move the cursor. When I clicked quit, I see the live version and all is working just fine. I can browse the internet, etc. What could be wrong?

• Why does update-grub not find ubuntu 11.10?

  I've recently installed ubuntu onto my laptop. With the intention of dual booting with windows 7. On installation Grub wasn't loading, the computer continued to boot straight into windows. I loaded a live cd, mounted the installed ubuntu partion (sda6) as /mnt/ and windows boot partition as /mnt/boot Following the second option here: http://ubuntuguide.net/how-to-restore-grub-2-after-reinstalling-windows-xpvistawin7 Through its entirety, so creating a new grub.cfg file. chroot /mnt update-grub Did not find ubuntu, just windows 7 and the windows recovery partition. Thinking this might be a weird quirk that as I was in ubuntu (all be it a live cd) it might not list ubuntu I restarted. Grub loaded but ubuntu was nowhere to be seen. How can I add ubuntu with Grub2? I could have fixed this myself in old grub but I'm pretty much in the dark here. Thanks

• Does Agile (scrum) require one server environment?

  Is it necessary/recommend/best practice/any other positive to use only one server environment to perform all development, unit testing and QA? If so, is it then wise/part of Agile to then have only one staging environment before Live? Considering that this could mean internationally distributed teams of developers and testers in different time zones is this wise? This is something being implemented by our QA manager. The opinion put forward is that doing all the dev and testing on a single server is "Agile." The staging environment would be a second environment, and then live.

• Can't install Ubuntu in a HP DV6 Laptop

  I just bought an HP DV6 6011tx (link) Laptop... I formated the disk through Windows and prepared for installing Ubuntu... When I insert the live CD, it shows the ubuntu start screen and then everything goes black (no cursor... Just like the screen is switched off (but the system is working)) When i try to install from the USB, it says Live media is not found! Some times it also give a black screen like the CD... Have any idea how to fix this? Thanks

• Is the Lenovo Ideapad Z570 fully compatible with 12.04?

  I'm looking for some notebook that will run on Ubuntu perfectly. I like LENOVO IdeaPad Z570, but I'm not sure how it will perform on Ubuntu. I heard people are complaining about wireless problems. Here is full configuraion: Processor Intel Core i5 2430M 2.4GHz - 3.0GHz Chipset Intel HM65 Express Memory 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M 1GB HDD 750GB SATA II Wireless 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 Network adapter Ethernet LAN 10/100Mbps Ports VGA, HDMI, 3x USB 2.0, eSATA Does anyone have experience with this model? Any problems noted? I heard there is a test suite, how can I install it? Maybe I can boot live CD and try it myself before buying it. But, unfortunately, sometimes something works on live CD, but not when you install it. I guess critical components here are graphics and wireless. Any feedback would be appreciated.

• Windows Phone 8 Launch Event Summary

  Today was the official coming out party for Windows Phone 8.  Below is a summary of the launch event.  There is a lot here to stay with me. They started with a commercial staring Joe Belfiore show how his Windows Phone 8 was personal too him which highlights something I think Microsoft has done well over the last couple of event: spotlight how Windows Phone is a different experience from other smartphones.  Joe actually called iPhone and Android “tired old metaphors" and explained that the idea around Windows Phone was to “reinvent the smartphone around you” as “the most personal smartphone operating system”.  The is the message that they need to drive home in their adds. The only real technical aspect we found out was that they have optimized the operating system around the dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon chip set.  It seems like all of the other hardware goodies had already been announced.  The remainder of the event was centered around new features of the OS and app announcements. So what are we getting?  The integrated features included lock screen live tile, Data Sense, Rooms and Kids corner.  There wasn’t a lot of information about it, but Joe also talked about apps not just having live tiles, but being live apps that could integrate with wallet and the hub. The lock screen will now be able to be personalized with live tile data or even a photo slide show.  This gives the lock screen an even better ability to give you the information you want to know before you even unlock the phone. The Kids Corner allows you as a parent to setup an area on your phone that you kids can go into an use it without disturbing your apps.  They can play games or use apps that you have designated and will only see those apps.  It even has a special lock screen gesture just for the kids corner. Rooms allow you to organize your phone around the groups of people in your life.  You get a shared calendar, a room wall as well as shared notes beyond just being able to send messages to a group.  You can also invite people not on the Windows Phone platform to access an online version of the room. Data Sense is a new feature that gives you better control and understanding of your data plan usage.  You can see which applications are using data and it can automatically adjust they way your phone behaves as you get close to your data limit. Add to these features the fact that the entire Windows ecosystem is integrated with SkyDrive and you have an available anywhere experience that is unequaled by any other platform.  Your document, photos and music are available on your Windows Phone, Window 8 device and Xbox.  SkyDrive also doesn’t limit how long you can keep files like the competing cloud platforms and give more free storage. It was interesting the way they made the launch event more personal.  First Joe brought out his own kids to demo the Kids Corner.  They followed this up by bringing out Jessica Alba to discuss her experience on the Windows Phone 8.  They need to keep putting a face on the product instead of just showing features as a cold list. Then we get to apps.  We knew that the new Skype was coming, but we found out that it was created in such a way that it can receive calls without running consistently in the background which would eat up battery.  This announcement was follow by the coming Facebook app that is optimized for Windows Phone 8.  As a matter of fact they indicated that just after launch the marketplace would have 46 out of the top 50 apps used by all smartphone platforms.  In a rational world this tide with over 120,000 apps currently in the marketplace there should be no more argument about the Windows Phone ecosystem. For those of us who develop for Windows Phone and weren’t on the early adoption program will finally get access to the SDK tomorrow after an announcement at Build (more waiting).  Perhaps we will get a few new features then. • Ubuntu 13.10 upgrade error. Dropping to low graphics mode

  I was updating from the terminal and it was complete. It asked me if I would like to reboot now. I accidentally pressed 't' instead of 'y' and then it just asked me to reboot manually. Then I rebooted using sudo shutdown now -r And on reboot, the system flashed the "low graphics mode" error screen and its stuck there. I have 13.10 live-USB with me. Is there any way I can get my system to boot normally? I'm not willing to do a fresh install as I had installed several other packages. Another question: is there any diff if I drop into terminal using Alt+Ctrl+F1 or if I use chroot from a live session?

• How to get rid of crawling errors due to the URL Encoded Slashes (%2F) problem in Apache

  The Google web crawler has indexed a whole set of URLs with encoded slashes (%2F) for our site. I assume it has picked up the pages from our XML sitemap file. The problem is that the live pages will actually result in a failure because of the Url Encoded Slashes Problem in Apache. Some solutions are mentioned here We are implementing a 301 redirect scheme for all the error pages. This should make the Google bot delete the pages from the crawling errors (no more crashing pages). Does implementing the 301s require the pages to be "live"? In that case we may be forced to implement solution 1 in the article. The problem is that solution 1 will pose a security vulnerability..

• Are there statistics or time series of open bugs in Ubuntu?

  I would like to know how the number of bugs in Ubuntu (open, closed, critical, etc) has evolved with time. It's a sort of scientific curiosity I have, but it would also give me a feeling how the community has changed over time, how it has coped with the challenges (I think of Unity in particular) and what's its status now. Has anyone collected these data over the years? If yes, are they publicly available? I know this information can be gathered from Launchpad itself and actually I found a website that had data from mid 2008 to early 2009. I found Ubuntu live stats, which shows live messages related to Ubuntu, but does not aggregate bug statistics. Finally there are some stats on the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter but they only show diffs of bugs closed during the last week.

  I have a problem with ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my custom tower pc in which the OS hangs at specific points:- - live usb with persistence: hangs when mouse appears. - installed to hard disk: hangs after login, logon sound never plays. i am a relative newbie with linux so any terminal output would not make sense to me :) the pc specs are as follows: - MSI MS-7301 Cuba motherboard - 3GB DDR2 RAM (NOT dual channel) - ATI Radeon HD 5450 gfx card the live usb works fine on all other PC's i tried it on. could any one help me ?
