• Rendering another Action without changing URL?

  I have this code in my Rails 3 controller: def index now = Time.now.utc.strftime("%m%d") redirect_to :action => "show", :id => now end def show begin @date = Time.parse("12#{params[:id]}") dbdate = params[:id] rescue ArgumentError @date = Time.now.utc dbdate = @date.strftime("%m%d") end @date = @date.strftime("%B %d") @events = Event.events_for_date(dbdate) end So basically index is just a specialized version of show, hence I want it to execute show, render the show.html.erb view - but I do not want to change the URL like redirect_to does. I have tried this approach: def index now = Time.now.utc.strftime("%m%d") params[:id] = now show render :action => "show" end Now, this works, but it just smells badly. I'm new to Ruby and Rails, so I just wonder if there is something fundamentally wrong or if there is a better way to do this?

I.e. If the href is: /website/product1234.do?code=1234&version=1.3&somethingelse=blaah I only want to return the variable for "version", so wish to only return "1.3" in my example. What's most efficient way to do this?

  The software I am using produces log files with a variable number of lines of summary information followed by lots of tab delimited data. I am trying to write a function that will read the data from these log files into a data frame ignoring the summary information. The summary information never contains a tab, so the following function works: read.parameters <- function(file.name, ...){ lines <- scan("tmp.log", what="character", sep="\n") first.line <- min(grep("\\t", lines)) return(read.delim(file.name, skip=first.line-1, ...)) } However, these logfiles are quite big, and so reading the file twice is very slow. Surely there is a better way?

• NSArraycontroller selectionIndexes bindings

  Hi all, I have the following set-up: A Window that has a splitView in which I display I NSCollectionView in the left view and a detailView in the right view. Both views are set-up in separate xibs. Furthermore I have a Datacontroller (of class NSArrayController) that manages a mutable Array of NSMutableDictionaries (moviesForChoice). The dataController is set-up as application delegate. The movie objects in the array have properties like (name, plot, genre etc.) so far so good... In the xib for the NScollectionview I bound a NSArraycontroller content property to my datacontroller via Application.delegate.moviesForChoice The collectionView accesses the arraycontroller.arrrangedObjects and arraycontroller.selectionIndexes. This works fine the contents are displayed and the selection works fine in the collectionview (my collectionviewItem renders a selection color) In the xib for the detailView I want to display information for the selected object in the collectionview. Therefore I also added an arraycontroller to the xib, bound the content aray to Application.delegate.moviesForChoice and bound the NSTextfields in the view to e.g. arraycontroller.selection.name Here comes my issue: everytime I open the window with the two xibs, my collectionview displays all movies that are for choice correctly, and the detailview displays the information for the 1st object in my collectionview. Whenever I click on a different movie in the collectionView the res. item renders a selection color, but the detailView doesn't update. My understanding of it would be that the DataController is not informed about updates in the selectionIndexes and can therefore not trigger an update in the detailView. Correct me if I'm wrong... To remedy this I tried to bind the selectionIndexes property of the arraycontroller in the collectionView xib to Application.delegate.moviesForChoice.selecionIndexes but this failed with: addObserver:forKeyPath:options:context:] is not supported. Key path: selectionIndexes I could imagine that this means that the datacontroller is not KVO compliant for my Array moviesForChoice, but I implemented the following methods for it: -(void)insertObject:(NSDictionary *)dict inMoviesForChoiceAtIndex:(NSUInteger)index { [moviesForChoice insertObject:dict atIndex:index]; } -(void)removeObjectFromMoviesForChoiceAtIndex:(NSUInteger)index { [moviesForChoice removeObjectAtIndex:index]; } -(void)setMoviesForChoice:(NSMutableArray *)a { moviesForChoice = a; } -(NSArray*)moviesForChoice { return moviesForChoice; } -(NSUInteger)countOfMoviesForChoice { return [moviesForChoice count]; } - (void)addMovieForChoiceObject:(Movie *)anObject { [moviesForChoice addObject:anObject]; } So where am I wrong? • Should uni provide "correct answer" after programming assignment is due?

  Hi all: This is my very first subjective question. And I think it is programming related - the assignment is to be written in a programming language. I am not for "getting the full marks out of a subject". I am actually not for a "correct answer", but for a "better solution", so that I can compare, and can improve. I reckon it is good that I practice programming first and check the solution later to pick up the things I've done wrong/bad. Without a "benchmark" to against, this would be much harder. Unfortunately as far as I know, not all programming subjects taught in uni would kindly provide the students with a "correct answer" in the end, after the assignment is due. One bad metaphor for this is like someone asks you a question which they don't have a clear answer themselves and hope to take advantage of your answer as the basis for their answer. Personally, I feel having a assignment solution provided by the academic staff is essential to students. I do appreciate this, and I feel I might not be the only one. I am a very proactive student in uni. I learn more, I practice more, an assignment for me is more like a challenge to achieve "the best solution I can come up with", not something "I have to pass"... The cause of this question is that for the past few days I have crafted 500+ lines of Perl code, for a tiny assignment. I feel pain when I look at my solution(not finished yet) and I feel like I am an idiot doing some crap code. I know there must be a much better solution. And I reckon it is better for the lecturer in this subject to get me one, rather than asking for an answer here, even I would shamelessly add the link to my solution apart from the assignment requirements. I know in SO, there are a lot of tutors/lecturers for programming subjects/courses. I'd like to hear your words on this question.

• Getting the first of a GROUP BY clause in SQL

  I'm trying to implement single-column regionalization for a Rails application and I'm running into some major headaches with a complex SQL need. For this system, a region can be represented by a country code (e.g. us) a continent code that is uppercase (e.g. NA) or it can be NULL indicating the "default" information. I need to group these items by some relevant information such as a foreign key (we'll call it external_id). Given a country and its continent, I need to be able to select only the most specific region available. So if records exist with the country code, I select them. If, not I want a records with the continent code. If not that, I want records with a NULL code so I can receive the default values. So far I've figured that I may be able to use a generated CASE statement to get an arbitrary sort order. Something like this: SELECT *, CASE region WHEN 'us' THEN 1 WHEN 'NA' THEN 2 ELSE 3 END AS region_sort FROM my_table WHERE region IN ('us','NA') OR region IS NULL GROUP BY external_id ORDER BY region_sort The problem is that without an aggregate function the actual data returned by the GROUP BY for a given row seems to be untameable. How can I massage this query to make it return only the first record of the region_sort ordered groups?

• How to manage toolbars with mvvm and WPF

  I'm looking for a smooth method of managing toolbars (and menus) with mvvm in WPF. Consider an UI with tabbed workspaces and heterogenous content (like Visual Studio). There the toolbars should be hidden or visible depending on the active tab. How would you design the view viewmodel for the toolbars? I'd use a collection of toolbar-viewmodels and bind the ToolbarTray to it, but afaik that's not possible. Any recommendations are apreciated. Links to samples, best practice papers, etc. are welcome.

• How can I add spacing in RelativeLayout

  Hi, I have a Relative Layout. Which has 2 buttons, side by side and it is right-aligned. So this is my layout xml file. My question is there are no spacing between the right-most button and the right border of the RelativeLayout and between the 2 buttons. How can I add that? I play with android:paddingRight, but nothing helps. • Animation of UINavigationController's UIToolbar

  When presenting a view controller that has toolbar items, is it possible for the toolbar to slide in with the view controller (i.e. slide in from the right) as opposed to it sliding from the bottom? • PHP array value becomes blank. What is going on?

  I have written a web page that works fine expect for some weird behavior. The code below gets all expected values and populates them correctly except for $v-data["quick_phone_id"] and $v-data["quick_email_id"] which are integers. Those values come out blank in the string I am creating. The value for $v-data["id"] is another integer and works as expected. My only clue is that when I uncomment the commented out line, the code works properly. So I'm guessing this has to do with referencing getting broken for the array. Any ideas? • iPhone apps for company-internal use - possible?

  I hope this is still programming related, as SuperUser doesn't seem the appropriate place. Basically I wonder if it is possible to have Applications that are internal to a company on the iPhone? That is something like a companion Application to an Intranet (when Safari and Mail just don't cut it) which wouldn't make sense on the AppStore (and likely wouldn't get approved anyway). Is something like that possible (without Jailbreaking or doing anything else that Apple doesn't normally want)?

  I'm trying to extract the postal codes from yell.com using php and preg_replace. I successfully extracted the postal code but only along with the address. Basically I should extract the lasted 2 words from each array . Thank you in advance for any help !

• MVC Entity Framework: Cannot open user default database. Login failed.

  This type of stuff drives me nuts. I'm having trouble finding the exact issue that I'm having, maybe I just don't know the terminology. Anyway, I had a working website using MVC and Entity Framework, but then I coded an error in a partial view page (ascx). Then all of a sudden I started to get this message. Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM' I've found plenty of suggestions about opening SQL Server Management Studio, Double Click on Security, Double Click on Logins, Double click on NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM and then double click on User Mapping. In this view I'm suppose to check the box for my database so that this user is mapped to this login. However, since I created my database in Visio Studio 2008 as part of my solution, it doesn't show up to allow me to click on it. So what do I do now? What drives me nuts is that everything was working fine. I was using my computer name to access the website and everything was working fine until the coding error. I've fix the error but still getting the error. I should also mention that this error started yesterday too around the same time but later cleared itself up. If I use localhost to access the site, it works just fine. IIS7 configuration for my website: Application Pool = DefaultAppPool Physical Path Credentials Logon = ClearText With in connection strings. I do see the one for my database in this solution. Entry Type is local metadata=res://*/Models.DataModel.csdl|res://*/Models.DataModel.ssdl|res://*/Models.DataModel.msl; provider=System.Data.SqlClient; provider connection string="Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\FFBall.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;MultipleActiveResultSets=True" And somewhere I remember changing the identity from Network Service to LocalSystem. Because when I first stared I was getting this same message, but I changed this value and it started working. I saw that suggested somewhere too but I do not recall. Wait I remember now, I believe in IIS7, under Application Pools, DefaultAppPool identity is set to LocalSystem. Additional things I've tried. Restart the computer Recycle the application pool. Antivirus isn't running. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

• Crosstab with multiple items

  In SPSS, it is (relatively) easy to create a cross tab with multiple variables using the factors as the table heading. So, something like the following (made up data, etc.). Q1, Q2, and Q3 each have either a 1, a 2, or a 3 for each person. 1 (very Often) 2 (Rarely) 3 (Never) Q1. Likes it 12 15 13 Q2. Recommends it 22 11 10 Q3. Used it 22 12 9 In SPSS, one can even request row, column, or total percentages. I've tried table(), ftable(), xtab(), CrossTable() from gmodels, and CrossTable() from descr, and none of these can handle (afaik) multiple variables; they mostly seem to handle 1 variable crossed with another variable, and the 3rd creates layers. Is there a package with some good cross tabbing/table examples that I could use to figure this out? I'm sure I'm missing something simple, so I appreciate you pointing out what I missed. Perhaps I have to generate each row as a separate list and then make a dataframe and print the dataframe?

• How do I upload a files to google app engine app when field name is not known

  Just wondering how you all manage your workload effectively when there's a lot of your plate? What do you do to break it down into bite-size chunks and how do you track progress of each task? Do you find TDD helps to focus your attention of getting areas of functionality complete before moving onto the next one? I quite often find myself getting a bit overwhelmed when I have an involving task on the go (even if it can be broken down into lots of small chunks), even though I know I'm more than capable of doing the work. We have a kind of agile approach Interested to hear how everyone manages things effectively.

• javax.servlet import cannot be resolved after moving web servlet

  I have written a small web servlet to run under Tomcat, using Eclipse Helios. In its old, non-source-controlled location, everything was fine, but now I need to add this to our source control system. Moving the old files out of the way, creating a new workspace, setting up the server connection and copying and importing the existing projects into the new workspace all worked fine once I figured out how to do it, but I can't get the servlet to build. Instead, I get a whole bunch of cannot be resolved to a type errors talking about various servlet class types; HttpServlet, HttpServletRequest, ServletException, etc. Another error that is almost certainly related is The import javax.servlet cannot be resolved. I am obviously missing something very basic, but I'm new to this (and not having the terminology really down pat probably doesn't help me Google for an answer). Any suggestions as to what I might be missing would be greatly appreciated.

  I have the following HTML that is within a larger document <br /> Important Text 1 <br /> <br /> Not Important Text <br /> Important Text 2 <br /> Important Text 3 <br /> <br /> Non Important Text <br /> Important Text 4 <br /> I'm currently using BeautifulSoup to obtain other elements within the HTML, but I have not been able to find a way to get the important lines of text between <br /> tags. I can isolate and navigate to each of the <br /> elements, but can't find a way to get the text in between. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
