• Unable to terminate extra EC2 instances

  I'm just setting up my AWS server & I'm trying to use the EC2 Console to terminate some extra instances that I generated via the AWS for Eclipse toolkit's New Project AWS Java Web Project utility. Unfortunately, every time I stop, then terminate such an instance via the EC2 Console, it automatically recreates & reactivates itself! I really don't want to be paying for 4 dev systems when I only need 1, so can somebody please clue me in? Please explain gently... I'm new to this environment.

• Going from imagex/AIK to WDT

  I was looking learning Windows Deployment Toolkit. I have been using AIK to create answer files and sysprep to clean the referece computer and imagex to capture and apply images. I have some .wim files I need to keep (they also have an answer file in them). I was wondering, if I start using WDT, can I import these images and have WDT deploy them or do I have to start over with capturing the images using WDT? If I can import, how do you deploy them in the same manner that imagex would use the images internal answer file using WDT? Leon

• MSSoap 3.0 Error while creating Virtual Directory with SOAPVDIR.CMD

  I am trying to install a web service (written in FoxPro) onto a newly configured server. Part of the installation process was to install MSSoap 3.0 which seems to be successful. The server OS is Microsoft Server 2008 R2 (x64). I am now trying to create a virtual directoty at the command prompt using the SOAPVDIR.CMD script and I am getting the following error: CMD> SOAPVDIR.CMD CREATE CSLRosterService "C:\ROSTERWS" CMD> ERROR (0x80070002): Soap Toolkit 3 Isapi is not correctly registered. Does anyone know how I can correct this or what I am doing wrong?

• What's the downsides of Running Ubuntu 9.10 32bit on AMD64 Processor

  Hi, I was thinking about installing Ubuntu 9.10 32bit on a DELL Inspiron 1501 with 64bit processor Laptop. Since It's was real pain to me to run Java Browser plugin, Flash Plugin, J2ME Toolkit, and many other tools. But It was 90% OK with me. This was Ubuntu 8.10 (a year ago), And now the Ubuntu 9.10 came and I'm thinking about installing the 32 bit on it and get rid of the pain. Is there a downside for that?? considering that the display card is not supported now so exclude this from your calculation, I will never play REAL games on it and I'm not a big fan of Compiz effects. I'm not here to ask about the performance (which is about 15%+ for the 64bit only), I just want compatibility!

• Web Application Vulnerability Scanner suggestions?

  I'm looking for a new tool for the ol' admin toolkit and would value some suggestions. I would like to do some "automated" testing of handful of websites for XSS (cross site scripting) vulns, along with checking for SQL injection opportunities. I realize that an automated tool approach isn't necessarily the only or best solution, but I'm hoping it would give me a nice start. The sites I need to scan cover the range in stacks from PHP / MySQL to Coldfusion, with some classic ASP and ASP.NET mixed in for good measure. What tools would you use to scan for Web application vulns? (Please note I'm focusing on the web apps directly, not the servers themselves).

• How do I automatically add icons to windows 7 task bar?

  Hi, I use the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit to install images and applications using a Lite-touch installation method. I would like to automatically add the icons to the "superbar" after installation so the users will be more inclined to use the improved task bar, rather than continuing to use desktop icons. I understand that there is no programmatic access to the task bar to prevent applications from adding themselves to the task bar, filling it with unwanted applications. Is there a way to use MDT, or even GPO to add icons to the task bar, or shall I use a VBS to add the Start menu shortcuts to the task bar?

  Hopefully someone has an answer or fix for this. When using Outlook 2007 & Word 2007 or Word 2010 & Outlook 2010, Mail merging Works fine. However there are some systems that have Word 2010 and Outlook 2007 installed. In these cases, Mail Merging to HTML Emails doesn't do anything. If i choose to Mail Merge to Plain text emails or attachments, these go through Outlook. Only HTML Email doesn't work. Now, something like Mapi Labs Mail Merge toolkit is abole to get around this, but I was wondering if there was any statement/solution on cross version support for HTML Mail Merging from Microsoft.

• how to stop a driver from running - it self protected and rootkit hidden

  I have this serous problem For the first time I can not stop a program from running. Something is on one laptop computer that is run as system legacy driver, and self protected and hidden on service as rootkit. Anything I try to remove fails. When a program or anti toolkit try to remove the hidden registry setting for make it stop I get this error : "a device attached to the system is not functioning" So any idea that can help me stop it from running, or even delete it on start up ? My one limitation is that the hard drive is on a laptop and I can not remove it and attact it to somewhere else. This program not let me, touch the registry, do not let me touch the file, do not let me touch the file, The move on boot fail to delete it, the rootrepeal fail to delete it, the rootkiet reveal from sysinternals fail to reveal it ! everything fails. Do how have any experience on this, or do you have any suggestion how to stop this driver from run ?

• greengeeks drupal install imagemagik 'path /usr/bin/convert' does not exists error

  I just signed up with greengeeks. I have a drupal install (6.19) on my public_html directory. The ImageMagic Toolkit can't find the binary - the error I get is "the path /usr/bin/convert" does not exist. when I use a terminal and do 'which convert' it shows /usr/bin/convert also, I have a second drupal install in an addon domain - it's home directory is above the public_html directory (in a directory called '/home/myusername/addons/seconddomain') The drupal install in the addon domain finds the imagemagick binary just fine. I am at a total loss as to why the original install cannot find the binary. The tech support guys at greengeeks have no clue either. Any ideas of things to try?

  We have a asp.net web application which will be used in an intranet environment on IE 6. We want to change the default configuration of the browser so that it's always rendered without the Tool Bars, Menu Bars and Address Bar, just the browser window frame and the status bar should be present. We were looking at the IEAK toolkit for IE6 but it doesn't seem to have the option of turning all this off though you can turn off certain menus and toolbar options. Any ideas of how this can be done, is there a group policy setting or something that we can utilize here to get this done? Thanks for your help.

• WPF DataGrid AutoColumn generation via ICustomTypeDescriptor.

  In a test project I've managed to AutoGenerate WPF DataGrid columns in the following scenario, where the data is stored in a Dictionary and binding is performed via PropertyDescriptors: public class People:List<Person>{ ... } public class Person:Dictionary<string,string>,INotifyPropertyChanged,ICustomTypeDescriptor { } The problem I'm having is in my real life project I'm using MVVM so it's *People*ViewModel which inherits ViewModelBase and hence can't inherit List<Person>. I've tried implementing IList<Person> instead with an internal List<Person> and explicitly setting the DataContext to an IList<Person> reference but that didn't work. I've seen a similar post on binding a win forms DataGridView here, so I'm wondering if the same sort of logic applies in WPF and primarily, what exactly causes the ICustomTypeDescriptor implementation to be picked up when inheriting List<T> that is missing when you simply implement IList<T> instead.

• WPF Combobox textbox not updating when binding changes.

  I have a WPF CombBox as follows: <ComboBox ItemsSource="{Binding Source={StaticResource myList}}" SelectedItem="{Binding Path=mySelectedItem}" /> The problem I have is that when the bound value changes, the selected value in the combobox's textbox does not update. (Note - the values in the combobox list do update). I am using MVVM so I can detect in the view model when the binding changes and call a property changed event and this is updating the combobox, but not the value displayed within the textbox. I think this could be done in the template of the combobox - somehow make the textbox be bound to the selecteditem of the combobox, or always update when it updates? I don't know how to do this though so any advice would be most appreciated.

• IoC and Design Time

  I have a WPF application which I am using to learn MVVM and IoC. The problem is that the Model used by one of the Views expects to pull one of its dependancies in the constructor from an IoC container. When working on this View in the Visual Studio designer it cannot show the design because an exception is being raised in the model. Is there a way around this? Am I pulling my dependancies in the wrong place in code or is there a way I can pass in constructed dependancies, perhaps through Constructor injection.   Hi there, I've got a question about a Silverlight WCF Databinding pattern: There are many examples about how to bind data using {Binding} expressions in XAML, how to make async calls to a WCF service, set the DataContext property of a element in the UI, how to use ObservableCollections and INotifyPropertyChanged, INotifyCollectionChanged and so on. Background: I'm using the MVVM pattern, and have a Silverlight ItemsControl, whose ItemsSource is set to an ObservableCollection property on my ViewModel object. My view is of course the XAML which has the {Binding}. Say the model object is called 'Metric'. My ViewModel periodically makes calls to a WCF service that returns ObservableCollection. MetricInfo is the data transfer object (DTO). My question is two-fold: Is there any way to avoid copying each property of MetricInfo to the model class - Metric? When the WCF calls completes, is there any way to make sure I sync the items which are in both my local ObservableCollection and the result of the WCF call - without having to first clear out all the items in the local collection and then add all the ones from the WCF call result? thanks, Krishna

• Silverlight authentication during startup - how to mimic syncronous behavior?

  I have a Silverlight app that is using the MVVM pattern. I have a WCF service which will allow me to authenticate users (I don't have direct control over that service - assume it is a black box that just returns me the user info and a list of privileges the user has). So, when the app starts up, I want to pull security data from that service. Right now, when I do this, my views and view models can end up getting initialized before the service returns with the security data. This causes problems because the view models need to disable buttons and make things visible/invisible based on the user having certain privileges. Is there a pattern that allows me to prevent the initialization of the views / view models until the WCF call has returned? How would you go about solving this problem as elegantly as possible?

I have been reading about Domain Driven Design, scrum, extreme programming, layered architecture etc. Its quite confusing and really hard (because of time limitations) to go and try each and every method and then deciding which way to go. Should I choose Extreme programming or scrum in this specific scenario Where does MVP and MVVM fits, which one would be a better option for me

• Silverlight 4 RIA does not return anything using DomainContext

  Hi everybody! Just learning Silverlight 4/RIA and i 'm stuck in a weird problem: setup an ASP.NET MVC project as the project hosting the Domain service. In this i tried to get data from the Domain Service which worked fine (i'm using a repository in it). Now i tried to setup a SL4 project. I though i do it the MVVM-way, so i decided to setup a ViewModel Class with the following code: public class ViewModel { OrganizationDomainContext dsCtxt = new OrganizationDomainContext(); public ViewModel() { EntityQuery<Culture> query = from cu in dsCtxt.GetAllCulturesQuery() select cu; LoadOperation<Culture> lo = dsCtxt.Load(query); } } The crazy thing about this is .. it doesn't return anything!!! I know this question has been asked before, but the last question was asked at least several months ago. A lot has changed since then. Right now, I'm using MVVM Light which is more of a library than an actual framework, as the name suggests. I’m looking for something more comprehensive. I prefer a framework that I can use on future WPF projects. Consequently, it should be general purpose and productive. Any insights or suggestions?

• Implementing a Property Inspector/Editor in WPF

  So far my plan is to have an event "Item selected" which the property inspector listens to. The actual property inspector is just a ContentControl. When the object is selected the content property is set and the appropriate DataTemplate for editing the object is loaded. In general I am trying to do this "MVVM" style. I guess you could use reflection instead of templating but I only have a handful of types so far. Has anyone implemented something similar? Can you offer any advice or source code?

• Search and Highlight search text in items in the Listview in WPF

  Hi, I am using MVVM to show the database records in a gridview (ListView view). i have a textbox where we can enter the text to be searched in the results listed in the gridview. i tried many ways to highlight the search text (Not the entire row only the text matches in the record) in the records displayed in the list view but unable to highlight. i am able to find the starting and ending indexes. i tried to created rectangles using those indexes on the text block but unable to highlight. Can anyone have solution for this. Thanks in advance.
