  • User directory in path in zsh: not working

    I'm doing this in my .zshrc PATH="~/scripts:$PATH" and if I do echo $PATH it appears as the first thing in the path. Yet this directory isn't included in the executable path (nor for tab-completion). What am I doing wrong? ls ~/scripts shows the directory as expected. Edit: This works, though... I guess ~ doesn't work in the path? #PATH="~/scripts:$PATH" PATH="/Users/yar/scripts:$PATH"

  • What is the official installer for Unix packages on Mac OS?

    I'm a bit confused about the installation of standard Unix packages on Mac OS X. For example, I have /usr/bin/svn, which is SVN v.1.4.4, but FinkCommander says svn is not installed. The same holds for other packages, like emacs etc. Is that just a wrong FinkCommander setting? Currently it is set to install everything in /sw, which is not even in the PATH. So, do I just have to set it to install packages to /usr, and it will recognize the installed software? I don't want to install duplicate packages of everything, and it is quite weird that the FinkCommander seems not to be in sync with the installed software. Or is there any other installer I should be using? Is Mac Ports the recommended installer to use? (I'm using Mac OS 10.5.8.)

  • Mac OS Leopard: SyncServer process constantly using 100% CPU

    I am running Leopard that I upgraded from Tiger. I've been noticing that every once in a while the SyncServer process starts up and eats up all the CPU. The fans will start going at full blast and the laptop will slow down to a crawl. I need to force quit the process from Activity Monitor to get it under control. It disappears for a while, but eventually gets started again. I do have an iphone as well that I sync so I'm wondering if syncServer might be an apple process checking for my phone plugged in.   • Can't connect to research.microsoft.com on home Qwest DSL connection

    I have a puzzling issue regarding accessing research.microsoft.com from my home Qwest DSL connection. By default, I frequently get timeouts when accessing research.microsoft.com from Firefox, Safari, or Chrome on my Mac. I also cannot access the site from Internet Explorer in a Windows VM. However, I am able to access the site through proxify.com, so I know the site is not down. Furthermore, I haven't noticed problems accessing other sites (in particular, www.microsoft.com works fine). Also, I can access research.microsoft.com when I'm connected to networks other than my home Qwest DSL connection. Together, the above make me suspect a problem with either my router (Airport Express) or, more likely, my ISP. Anyone have any thoughts on how I can narrow down the problem further? I could call my ISP and tell them the above, but my feeling is that probably won't get me very far. I can get by browsing research.microsoft.com through a proxy, but it would be nice to figure out what's going on here and fix the problem. I found one other thing while Googling that may be vaguely relevant: http://thedaneshproject.com/posts/supportmicrosoftcom-not-working-behind-squid/ Disabling the Accept-Encoding headers in Firefox actually didn't make a difference for me. I just thought the above might spark some other ideas about how mishandling of HTTP headers somewhere might be causing this problem. Thanks again! Another update: In case anyone is still thinking about this; I've found that I can't surf research.microsoft.com using the links text-based browser, but I can reliably download individual files with wget. Maybe that helps?

  • My Macbook Pro doesn't give any reaction when pressing the power button

    An hour ago I closed the display my Macbook Pro. it goes into sleep mode. After dinner I returned, opened the display and wanted to continue with my work, but I recognized it was switched off completely. I tried to press the power button and received nothing. I also noticed that the green light on the power supply plug which is plugged into my Macbook is off. Same thing with a power supply from the Mac of a friend of mine. What could I try? Some suggestions? What could be the problem here?? I already tried using the battery to start, no success, also taking the battery out completely, no success. Even if I press the small button for showing the current battery charge, none of the leds starts. It's like the Mac is completely dead.

  • Folder Aliases in Dock or List View cannot be expanded?

    I have been increasingly frustrated with the fact that you cannot expand a folder alias in the Finder "List View" via the "expand triangle" or in the dock. If I add a folder to the dock that contains folders and aliases to other folders, I can drill-down the "real" folders, but cannot on the aliases. Does anyone know a way to make this work?

  • How do I compile DarWINE in PowerPC Mac OS X 10.4.11...?

    So far I've tried using MacPorts which gives me this error: /Error: Cannot install wine for the arch(s) 'powerpc' because Error: its dependency pkgconfig is only installed for the archs 'i386 ppc'. Error: Unable to execute port: architecture mismatch To report a bug, etc... (I'm not allowed to post two links due to being a new poster...)./ I've also tried using the build script I found in the DarWINE 0.9.12 SDK download that I found on the DarWINE SourceForge.net Project Page... I've also tried the build script that I found at http://code.google.com/p/osxwinebuilder/#Building_Wine_via_the_script... None of these attempts to build DarWINE have actually worked. Whenever I build using the DarWINE build script I run it as follows: /1. I decompress the WINE tarball into ~/Downloads/WINE 2. I cd into ~/Downloads/DarWINE. 3. I run ./winemaker ~/Downloads/WINE/wine-1.2.2 or ./winemaker ~/Downloads/WINE/wine-1.2-rc2 (the reason for trying WINE 1.2-rc2 is that some people managed to get it to build on PowerPC Macs running 10.5.8...)./ I made sure to install Xcode Tools 2.5 & all the SDKs too... The net result is either a syntax type error resulting from trying to run the checked out Google Code DarWINE build script or a bunch of make errors when trying to run the official DarWINE build script that I forcefully extracted from the DarWINE 0.9.12 SDK .dmg file by using Pacifist. I trying to build DarWINE on mid-April 2006 1.42 GHz eMac with DL SuperDrive with Bluetooth 2.0+EDR with 2 GBs of RAM running 10.4.11 as I mentioned earlier...   • Weird graphical artefacts on OS X Snow Leopard.

    Since a couple of days I experience some strange graphical artefacts on Snow Leopard. Usually after a certain uptime, the background image would show some strange colours at some place. This could be reverted by reloading the background image. But the problem would appear again after rebooting (and waiting for an indefinite time). Sometimes, the shadow of windows would also have some artefacts; and this time the application switcher is completely distorted. Any ideas where I need to search for a solution of the problem? Edit: Model: MacBook Gen. 3.1 / all updates installed Update: After not having used Safari for a while, the problem has not occurred anymore (at least not after 20 days of uptime). Could well be that the problem had its origin in Safari or a Safari-related plugin. (Possibly Flash or Click-to-Flash as it did not happen with both deactivated, though the running time with this configuration might have been to short to be of any validity.)

  • Can I disallow printing with parent controls on Snow Leopard?

    I have two children under 4 who are quite computer-savvy, and have their own account managed by parental controls to restrict what they can do an see. However, I haven't found a way to disallow them from printing, and I'm looking for a way do so. Their pictures of Sesame Street and Word World are cute and all, but I'd like to be in control of what (or even if) they print. (Our printer is connected wirelessly, not directly to the Mac.) I know I can add more time or authorize use of a given application by providing my password — can I do something similar for printing, such as approving or denying particular print jobs?

  • Mac OS X Duplex Printing Paper Handling Oddness

    I like to print on stationery with a pre-printed letterhead using the Preview.app and a duplex-capable HP PostScript (Color Laserjet 4700) printer. One would think that pre-printed stationery could be placed into one of the trays and then printed on front and reverse side. Unfortunately, the print dialog handles one and two-paged documents differently: the stationery needs to be placed differently into the tray if the document contains one page versus when it contains two pages. This is not obvious when printing on plain paper but becomes obvious once you mark, say, the upper left front corner of pages and then print different documents on them. I checked the PostScript code generated and indeed it is different for one versus two-page documents with respect to duplex printing, probably causing the difference in paper handling. Obviously this makes it difficult to print pre-printed stationery in duplex mode. I expected others to have stumbled upon this but could not find specific help so far. Any ideas? This is on OS X 10.6 and I checked two different printers.

  • My Mac is slow but don't know what's slowing it down

    My Mac (Macbook Pro) is sometimes slow doing basic tasks, like browsing the web or something like that. If I open Activity Monitor, I have (maybe) one program that is about 10 % CPU, others are below 1 %. My CPU usage is not full. I still have more than 2 GB of free memory (out of 5 GB). There is no heavy I/O activity like copying files. My open programs are Google Chrome (6 tabs, none of which are in some way (flash, many DOM objects, Javascript) have IMO, except maybe Gmail), Activity Monitor, Finder, Sublime Text 2 (text editor) and iTerm (terminal). What is causing the slowdown? "Slow" being: taking time to write these characters (I press the keyboard keys but there is a delay before I see them on the screen), changing tabs or programs, etc.

  • Remote Installing OS X 10.5 on a PowerBook G4

    I recently acquired a PowerBook G4 (always loved the PPC architecture over Intel when it comes to Apple), currently it has OS X 10.4 installed. Unfortunately I can't find the original 10.5 install disc I had, though I made an ISO of it some time ago, which I've now burnt to a DVD-R DL disc (the SuperDrive is a DVD-R only iirc). This disc keeps being ejected by the PowerBook G4 (reads other discs just fine, except one). So I've been pondering doing a remote install, however the instructions I've seen are for MacBooks - I have DVD or CD Sharing installed, but the part in the instructions (http://guides.macrumors.com/Complete_Steps_to_Perform_a_Clean_OS_X_Reinstall_on_Your_MacBook_Air#Using_Remote_Install) about the 'Install Assistant', I don't get such a thing - only the BootCamp Installer. So my question is: How do I go about doing a remote install on this PowerBook G4? Or is there another alternative, without forking out on a new drive?

I have all necessary strings in /etc/paths /usr/bin /bin /usr/sbin /sbin /usr/local/bin in ~/.bash_profile export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/mysql/bin export PATH=$PATH:$HOME/.rvm/bin export PATH="$(brew --prefix php54)/bin:$PATH" export PATH="$(brew --prefix)/bin:$PATH" But every time I execute echo $PATH in terminal, I get only /usr/local/bin if I put .bash_profile strings to .profile or .bashrc I have no effect.

  • Starting airplay from command line, to send output of 'Say' Mac OS X command to airplay

    Ok, Sunday question :) Trying to make a little joke... 1) if you open a terminal, and type "say -a ?", Mac OS X will give you the list of devices it can send spoken words to. On mine, it says: 39 AirPlay 47 Built-in Output 2) I have a Denon airplay-ready received in my living room and I'm trying to send spoken words to my wife downstairs... I can send music without any problem using iTunes so, from an infrastructure standpoint, I'm all set. 3) I want my computer to say (out of the blue) "Honey, why don't you bring me a cup of coffee". I can make it say that locally on my internal laptop speakers, but I can't seem to send that to device 39 successfully. I am suspecting that there are a few other things that need to be setup before it works, i.e. setting up airplay output to "denon", maybe opening a channel and reserving it. I don't know. Has anyone played with this? Is there a way to setup airplay from the command line? That would be awesome :)

    I have the following problem - Windows Vista does not connect to adhoc wireless network created on my Macbook. I have tried to create secured (with 40 bit key) and unsecured network but Windows Vista still has problems to connect. Windows VISTA informs me -- after 5 minutes of attempts - that setting up the connection -- with my adhoc network -- took too much time. My question: do I need to configure some settings on Vista to connect it to my Macbook? Maybe it is a problem with DHCP?   • exporting clip in Final Cut Pro X or related video editing software on Mac

    I'm using Final Cut Pro X to edit a 1 hour long video. I made individual clips from it in Final Cut Pro X and I want to save just these clips, some of which are only 5 mins long. How can I do this? I tried using the app ClipExporter, but it won't even read my .fcpxml file, it just says that it's not a valid file and gives no helpful information at all. Another method I tried was to assign roles to each clip. I made one clip, 5 mins long, and then used Share - Export in Final Cut Pro X and chose the option to export roles as separate files. However, the export still estimates that it will take over an hour to export and so it looks like it's trying to export the whole movie, rather than the simple 5 min clip which should be exportable as a .MOV or related formats in a few minutes. How can I do this in final cut pro x? I'm also happy to switch to related video editing software as long as they are not extremely expensive. This seems like a very trivial and obvious feature: take a segment from a long movie and export just the selected region of it... I don't understand why it's so complicated to do in Final Cut Pro X.   • Aperture and networked drive: thinks images are offline

    I keep my photos on a networked drive (wireless), and they are referenced by Aperture. Aperture seems to not try very hard to look for this drive. Usually I have to open the network drive in Finder before opening Aperture -- otherwise it doesn't find the images and considers them offline. To me this seems like Aperture isn't willing to look on the network for the drive, unless it was helped along by pointing it out in Finder. It doesn't work if I start Aperture first and then navigate to the drive in Finder. What are some workarounds to making this functional? Is there a way to tell Aperture to look again without restarting the program?
