    Hello, Is there a way to test your application's processing and handling of Paypal generated credit card errors? I'd like to verify that my application can handle a declined credit card or something like that. So is there a way to have Paypal send an error message? Or would it be better to generate a stub and use it in the testing environment? If this is the better way, how would one generate a stub? Thanks!

My answer keeps on being 666 instead of 18.   • How to setup default attributes in a ruby model

    I have a model User and when I create one, I want to pragmatically setup some API keys and what not, specifically: @user.apikey = Digest::MD5.hexdigest(BCrypt::Password.create("jibberish").to_s) I want to be able to run User.create!(:email=>"[email protected]") and have it create a user with a randomly generated API key, and secret. I currently am doing this in the controller, but when I tried to add a default user to the seeds.rb file, I am getting an SQL error (saying my apikey is null). I tried overriding the save definition, but that seemed to cause problems when I updated the model, because it would override the values. I tried overriding the initialize definition, but that is returning a nil:NilClass and breaking things. Is there a better way to do this?

    I have installed searchlogic and added will_paginate etc. I currently have a product model that has tagging enabled using the acts_as_taggable_on plugin. I want to search the tags using searchlogic. Here is the taggable plugin page: http://github.com/mbleigh/acts-as-taggable-on Each product has a "tag_list" that i can access using Product.tag_list or i can access a specific tag using Product.tags[0] I can't find the scope to use for searching however with search logic. Here is my part of my working form. <p> <%= f.label :name_or_description_like, "Name" %><br /> <%= f.text_field :name_or_description_like %> </p> I have tried :name_or_description_or_tagged_with_like and :name_or_description_or_tags_like and also :name_or_description_or_tags_list_like to try and get it to work but I keep have an error that says the options i have tried are not found (named scopes not found). I am wondering how I can get this working or how to create my own named_scope that would allow me to search the tags added to each product by the taggable plugin. Thanks!

    I'm working on a basic garden logging application which consists of gardens, plants and planted plants. Each user has one or many gardens, plants are master definitions, and a planted plant can be thought of as an instance of a plant in a specific user's garden. In my routes.rb file I have the following: map.resources :gardens do |gardens| gardens.resources :planted_plants, :has_many => :plant_log_entries, :collection => { :filter => :post, :choose_garden => :post} gardens.resources :garden_log_entries end map.resources :plants This makes sense to me when retrieving a list of planted_plants in a user's garden, but I'd like to create a planted_plant record from the index of plant. The problem is, a user can have multiple gardens. How can I create a new form for a planted_plant that allows the user to specify which garden should be used? The current route requires a garden_id - which makes sense for retrieval, but I'd like to supply that as a parameter for creation. Thanks in advance for any help!

    Hello, I'm using Authlogic to manage my user sessions. I'm using the LDAP add-on, so I have the following in my users model acts_as_authentic do |c| c.validate_password_field = false end The problem is that recently I found out that there will be some users inside the application that won't be part of the LDAP (and can't be added!). So I would need to validate SOME passwords against the database and the others against the LDAP. The users whose password will be validated against the database will have an specific attribute that will tell me that that password will be validated in my database. How can I manage that? Is it possible that the validate_password_field receives a "variable"? That way I could create some method that will return true/false depending on where the password validation will be done? Thanks!     We're having a significant number of problems creating a bulk upload function for our little app. We're using the FasterCSV gem to upload data to a MySQL database but he Faster CSV is so twitchy and precise in its requirements that it constantly breaks with malformed CSV errors and time out errors. The csv files are generally created by users' pasting text from their web sites or from Microsoft Word docs so it is not reasonable to expect that there will never be odd characters like smart quotes or accents in the data. Also users aren't going to be readily able to identify whether their data is perfect enough for FasterCSV or not. We need to find a way to fix it for them automatically. Is there a good way or a reliable tool for pre-processing CSV data to fix any nits in the data before having the FasterCSV gem process it?

    Hi, I was trying to run an OpenSource project which requires ferret to be installed. While installing it using gem install ferret, it's giving this error - Building native extensions. This could take a while... ERROR: Error installing ferret: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. C:/Ruby/bin/ruby.exe extconf.rb creating Makefile nmake 'nmake' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Gem files will remain installed in C:/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/ferret-0.11.6 for inspection. Results logged to C:/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/ferret-0.11.6/ext/gem_make.out So, I tried installing nmake (nmake15.exe), but the one I could find. It does not installs on Windows 7.Please help.     I have a big application covered by more than a thousand tests via rspec. We just made the choice to redirect any page like : / /foo /foo/4/bar/34 ... TO : /en /en/foo /fr/foo/4/bar/34 .... So I made a before filter in application.rb like so : if params[:locale].blank? headers["Status"] = "301 Moved Permanently" redirect_to request.env['REQUEST_URI'].sub!(%r(^(http.?://[^/]*)?(.*))) { "#{$1}/#{I18n.locale}#{$2}" } end It's working great but ... It's breaking a lot of my tests, ex : it "should return 404" do Video.should_receive(:failed_encodings).and_return([]) get :last_failed_encoding response.status.should == "404 Not Found" end To fix this test, I should do : get :last_failed_encoding, :locale => "en" But ... seriously I don't want to fix all my test one by one ...   • Is it a good idea to mock/stub in integration tests?

    Say there are multiple requests in a integration test, some of them are sphinx calls(locator for example). Should we just stub out the entire response of these sphinx call, or, since it is a integration test, we want to excise the entire test without stubbing. If that is the case, how do we still keep test independent in the situation when sphinx fails, no internet connection, or third party server non-responsive. Give reasons. Thanks

  • Does acts-as-taggable-on work on heroku?

    Hello, I have a question: does the acts-as-taggable-on gem work on Heroku? I'been trying but it doesn't seem to work. In my development machine works okay. I'm wondering if it's maybe because Heroku uses PostgreSQL and my local env SQLite and for some reason postgresql is not supported by the special tagging "magic"? I couldn't find any related info to this, so I would like to know other experiences with this. I guess is pretty rare since both the gem and heroku are very popular.   • No route matches when trying to edit

    Here's the scoop: I've created a test app that allows users to create ideas and then add "bubbles" to these ideas. Currently, a bubble is just text. I've successfully linked bubbles to ideas. Furthermore, when a user goes to view an idea it lists all of the bubbles attached to that idea. The user can even delete the bubble for any given idea. My problem lies in editing bubbles. When a user views an idea, he sees the idea's content as well as any bubbles for that idea. As a result, I've set all my bubble controls (editing and deleting) inside the ideas "show" view. My code for editing a bubble for an idea is <%= link_to 'Edit Bubble', edit_idea_bubble_path %>. I ran rake routes to find the correct path for editing bubbles and that is what was listed. Here's my error: No route matches {:action=>"edit", :controller=>"bubbles"} In my bubbles controller I have: def edit @idea = Idea.find(params[:idea_id]) @bubble = @idea.bubbles.find(params[:id]) end def update @idea = Idea.find(params[:idea_id]) @bubble = @idea.bubbles.find(params[:id]) respond_to do |format| if @bubble.update_attributes(params[:bubble]) format.html { redirect_to(@bubble, :notice => 'Bubble was successfully updated.') } format.xml { head :ok } else format.html { render :action => "Edit" } format.xml { render :xml => @bubble.errors, :status => :unprocessable_entity } end end end To go a step further, I have the following in my routes.rb file resources :ideas do resources :bubbles end So far everything seems to function except when I try to edit a bubble.     I have a form I'm trying to set up ... Users can have many posts, and each post can have many people watching it. The Watch model is set up polymorphically as 'watchable' so it can apply to different types of models. It has a user_id, watchable_id, watchable_type and timestamps as attributes/fields. This is soley so that when people comment on a post, users watching the post can get an email about it. What I'm trying to do is show the user a list of users that they can tag on each post, which is not problem. This is what I'm using right now http://pastie.org/940421 The problem with this, is that when you go to edit an update/post ... all the checkboxes are prechecked ... I want it to pre-check only users who are currently watching the post.

The problem is I want some part of the text to be affected by some CSS, but the :collection attribute does not let me put in HTML.
