• Incrementing Assembly Version in TFS Builds and its affect over Other Build Definitions

  A very common scenario while performing TFS builds is to increment version number of the assemblies. There are quite a few approaches of which I would like to share two links: Ewald Hofman’s Approach: http://www.ewaldhofman.nl/post/2010/05/13/Customize-Team-Build-2010-e28093-Part-5-Increase-AssemblyVersion.aspx#id_02e7b082-ce95-49a9-92e9-7dc88887b377 Richard Bank’s Approach : http://www.richard-banks.org/2010/07/how-to-versioning-builds-with-tfs-2010.html   Both these approaches work well, however there are scenarios where Editing and Checking–in the Assembly version information can create problems with Build Definitions meant for Continuous Integration, or gated Check-ins. You can suppress the Continuous Integration Builds while checking in the Assembly info file by just putting a comment “***NO_CI***” as specified by Ewald in his blog. However, if you have Gated Checkin in place, this can turn out to be difficult to suppress, I myself tried to suppress the Build Trigger during the check in process but things doesn’t turn out well. That’s where Richard’s solution comes as handy. Both the solutions have their own pros and cons, which I believe can only be experienced over a period of time. In case of Richard’s solution I believe that we don’t have any history of the Assembly Version Info file and when you take latest of the solution the information will be lost. If you notice closely, that suppressing the Continuous Integration (the NO_CI approach in check in comments) is a workaround provided by Microsoft, however I didn’t find anything to suppress the gated Checkin so far. Suggestions or Findings are most welcome.

  In the last eight days the Oracle Technology Network Architect Day tour has stopped in Dallas, Anaheim (Disneyland, to be precise) , and at Oracle HQ in Redwood Shores,  CA. I was on-scene for the Dallas event, where I pulled a TMZ-style ambush on Chris Benedict from the Oracle Enterprise Solutions Group to capture this short video.     The other presenters escaped. • Step by Step screencasts to do Behavior Driven Development on WCF and UI using xUnit

  I am trying to encourage my team to get into Behavior Driven Development (BDD). So, I made two quick video tutorials to show how BDD can be done from early requirement collection stage to late integration tests. It explains breaking user stories into behaviors, and then developers and test engineers taking the behavior specs and writing a WCF service and unit test for it, in parallel, and then eventually integrating the WCF service and doing the integration tests. It introduces how mocking is done using the Moq library. Moreover, it shows a way how you can write test once and do both unit and integration tests at the flip of a config setting. Watch the screencast here: Doing BDD with xUnit, Subspec and on a WCF Service  Warning: you might hear some noise in the audio in some places. Something wrong with audio bit rate. I suggest you let the video download for a while and then play it. If you still get noise, go back couple of seconds earlier and then resume play. It eliminates the noise.  The next video tutorial is about doing BDD to do automated UI tests. It shows how test engineers can take behaviors and then write tests that tests a prototype UI in isolation (just like Service Contract) in order to ensure the prototype conforms to the expected behaviors, while developers can write the real code and build the real product in parallel. When the real stuff is done, the same test can test the real stuff and ensure the agreed behaviors are satisfied. I have used WatiN to automate UI and test UI for expected behaviors. • PHP remote development workflow: git, symfony and hudson

  I'm looking to develop a website and all the work will be done remotely (no local dev server). The reason for this is that my shared hosting company a2hosting has a specific configuration (symfony,mysql,git) that I don't want to spend time duplicating when I can just ssh and develop remotely or through netbeans remote editing features. My question is how can I use git to separate my site into three areas: live, staging and dev. Here's my initial thought: public_html (live site and git repo) testing: a mirror of the site used for visual tests (full git repo) dev/ticket# : git branches of public_html used for features and bug fixes (full git repo) Version Control with git: Initial setup: cd public_html git init git add * git commit -m ‘initial commit of the site’ cd .. git clone public_html testing mkdir dev Development: cd /dev git clone ../testing ticket# all work is done in ./dev/ticket#, then visit www.domain.com/dev/ticket# to visually test make granular commits as necessary until dev is done git push origin master:ticket# if the above fails: merge latest testing state into current dev work: git merge origin/master then try the push again mark ticket# as ready for integration integration and deployment process: cd ../../testing git merge ticket# -m "integration test for ticket# --no-ff (check for conflicts ) run hudson tests visit www.domain.com/testing for visual test if all tests pass: if this ticket marks the end of a big dev sprint: make a snapshot with git tag git push --tags origin else git push origin cd ../public_html git checkout -f (live site should have the latest dev from ticket#) else: revert the merge: git checkout master~1; git commit -m "reverting ticket#" update ticket# that testing failed with the failure details Snapshots: Each major deployment sprint should have a standard name and should be tracked. Method: git tag Naming convention: TBD Reverting site to previous state If something goes wrong, then revert to previous snapshot and debug the issue in dev with a new ticket#. Once the bug is fixed, follow the deployment process again. My questions: Does this workflow make sense, if not, any recommendations Is my approach for reverting correct or is there a better way to say 'revert to before x commit'

• Should one generally develop a client library for REST services to help prevent API breakages?

  We have a project where UI code will be developed by the same team but in a different language (Python/Django) from the services layer (REST/Java). The code for each layer exits in different code repositories and which can follow different release cycles. I'm trying to come up with a process that will prevent/reduce breaking changes in the services layer from the perspective of the UI layer. I've thought to write integration tests at the UI layer level that we'll run whenever we build the UI or the services layer (we're using Jenkins as our CI tool to build the code which is in two Git repos) and if there are failures then something in the services layer broke and the commit is not accepted. Would it also be a good idea (is it a best practice?) to have the developer of the services layer create and maintain a client library for the REST service that exists in the UI layer that they will update whenever there is a breaking change in their Service API? Conceivably, we would then have the advantage of a statically-typed API that the UI code builds against. If the client library API changes, then the UI code won't compile (so we'll know sooner that there was a breaking change). I'd also still run the integration tests upon building the UI or services layer to further validate that the integration between UI and the service(s) still works.

• A (slight) Change of Focus

  When I started this blog in September 2009 I was working as a BizTalk developer for a financial institution based in the South West of England.  At the time I was developing using BizTalk Server 2004 and intended to use my blog to collate and share any useful information and experiences that I had using this version of BizTalk (and occasionally other technologies) in an effort to bring together as many useful details as I could in one place. Since then my circumstances have changed and I am no longer working in the financial industry using BizTalk 2004.  Instead I have recently started a new post in the logistics industry, in the North of England, as "IT Integration Manager".  The company I now work for has identified a need to boost their middleware/integration platform and have chosen BizTalk Server 2009 as their platform of choice; this is where I come in. To start with my role is to provide the expertise with BizTalk that they currently lack, design and direct the initial BizTalk 2009 implementation and act as lead developer on all pending BizTalk projects.  Following this it is my hope that we will be able to build on the initial BizTalk "proof of concept" and eventually implement a fully robust enterprise level BizTalk 2009 environment. As such, this blog is going to see a shift in focus from BizTalk 2004 to BizTalk 2009 and at least initially is likely to include posts on the design and installation of our BizTalk environment - assuming of course that I have the time to write them! The last post I made was the start of a chapter by chapter look at the book SOA Patterns with BizTalk Server 2009.  Due to my change of job I am currently "paused" half way through this book, and my lack of posts on the subject are directly as a result of the job move and the pending relocation of my family.  I am hoping to write about my overall opinion of this book sometime soon; so far it certainly looks like it will be a positive one. But the Java integration has always produced from time to time some strange behavior (like losing the focus on the other components after clicking on the Browser window, overlapping of windows, etc.), most probably because of mixing heavyweight and lightweight components and also because of our incompetency in solving the issues. Thus, recently we changed for the JavaFX 2.2 WebWiew. The integration with Java is fine and we have got rid of all the DJ-Native Swing problems. However, we have lost some features which were given for free with the native browsers such as downloading resources in different formats and opening them in the right application. This is a pretty cool step forward, i.e., the JavaFX integration. It also confirms for me something I've heard other people saying too: the JavaFX WebView component is a perfect low threshold entry point for Swing developers feeling their way into the world of JavaFX.

• Particle trajectory smoothing: where to do the simulation?

  I have a particle system in which I have particles that are moving to a target and the new targets are received via network. The list of new target are some noisy coordinates of a moving target stored in the server that I want to smooth in the client. For doing the smoothing and the particle I wrote a simple particle engine with standard euler integration model. So, my pseudo code is something like that: # pseudo code class Particle: def update(): # do euler motion model integration: # if the distance to the target is more than a limit # add a new force to the accelleration # seeking the target, # and add the accelleration to velocity # and velocity to the position positionHistory.push_back(position); if history.length > historySize : history.pop_front() class ParticleEngine: particleById = dict() # an associative array # where the keys are the id # and particle istances are sotred as values # this method is called each time a new tcp packet is received and parsed def setNetTarget(int id, Vec2D new_target): particleById[id].setNewTarget(new_target) # this method is called each new frame def draw(): for p in particleById.values: p.update() beginVertex(LINE_STRIP) for v in p.positionHistory: vertex(v.x, v.y) endVertex() The new target that are arriving are noisy but setting some accelleration/velocity parameters let the particle to have a smoothed trajectories. But if a particle trajectory is a circle after a while the particle position converge to the center (a normal behaviour of euler integration model). So I decided to change the simulation and use some other interpolation (spline?) or smooth method (kalman filter?) between the targets. Something like: switch( INTERPOLATION_MODEL ): case EULER_MOTION: ... case HERMITE_INTERPOLATION: ... case SPLINE_INTERPOLATION: ... case KALMAN_FILTER_SMOOTHING: ... Now my question: where to write the motion simulation / trajectory interpolation? In the Particle? So I will have some Particle subclass like ParticleEuler, ParticleSpline, ParticleKalman, etc..? Or in the particle engine?

• How to customize the initrd embedded in or coming with the kernel image

  I would like to add some tools and not just kernel modules into the initrd (initramfs-based). Now I'm aware of how to unpack and how to pack the initrd with cpio and have even written a hook for /etc/initramfs-tools/hooks in the past to integrate a third-party kernel module. However, while the available script libraries seem to be geared towards the integration of modules, none of them seems to be for integration of other entities (in particular programs and their dependencies). What options do I have to automate the integration of some useful tools for recovery into the initrd? I'm talking about the "rescue" system that the system drops into if it is unable to mount the root drive given to it by the boot loader. Please note that I don't want the SquashFS approach as is used for Live-CDs because for the issue at hand it will be by far sufficient to include some relatively small tools that aid in recovery of the system (when it gets stuck in initrd and can't boot further). Also, the machines when they run into the issue that we have had in the past tend to boot into the rescue system, but there a few tools are missing to kick the system back on trail ...

• What makes you look like a bad developer (ie a hacker) [on hold]

  This comes from a lot of people about me, so I have to look at myself. So I would wonder what make one a bad developer (ie a hacker). These are a few things about me I used IDE intensively, all features, you name it: auto-completion, refactoring, quick fixes, open type, view hierarchy, API documentation, etcc When I deal with writing code for a project in domain I am not used to (I can't have fluency in this, this is new), I only have a very rough high level ideas. I don't use the standard modeling diagrams for early detail planning. Unorthodox diagrams that I invented when I need to draw the design in details. I don't use UML or similar, I find them not enough. I divide the sorts of diagram I drew into 3 types. Very high level diagrams which probably can be understood by almost anybody. Data entity diagram used for modeling data objects only (like ER diagrams and tree for inheritances and composition). Action diagrams for agents/classes and their interactions on data objects they contain. Constantly changing the interface (public methods) between interacting agents/classes if the need arises. I am more refrained when the interface and the module have matured Write initial concept code in a quick hackie way just so that the module works in the general cases so that I can play around with it. The module will be re-factored intensively after playing around so I could see more corner cases that I couldn't or (wouldn't want) anticipate before writing code. Using JUnit for integration-like test by using TestSuite class and ordering Unit test classes in the suite Using debugger almost anytime there is a problem instead of reading the code Constantly search on the internet for how to do some thing with some library that I haven't used a lot. So judgment, am I a bad developer? a hacker? Put in other words, to make sure this is not considered off-topic: - Is this bad practice to make your code too agile during incubating/prototyping phase of software development - Is it bad practice to use JUnit for integration testing, (I know there are other framework for integration testing, but those frameworks are for a specific products, not general)
