• Menu to let me choose OS to run in a dual boot machine

  I recently re-imaged my Dell PC to dual-install Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. The dual-boot was a success, since I was able to start whichever OS I wanted. Now, I installed some software (the OpenJDK package) on the Ubuntu side of the PC. Upon restarting Ubuntu, I unfortunately lost the ability to choose the OS that I wanted to run (i.e., Ubuntu). Ordinarily, I'd expect to: 1. Hit the power button 2. A menu (Grub?) shows up listing all OSs installed in the PC (namely, Win7 and Ubuntu) 3. Choose which OS I want and hit enter. bingo. The problem is that I don't see that menu (step 2 above). Instead, windows automatically starts, even when I hit F12 to see the boot options, none of which I understand. Your help would be great! • USB disk not recognized after detaching from DVD player. What to do?

  I had one Transcend 4GB USB stick formatted to NTFS and was working fine. Today I inserted this disk into a DVD player, and it was saying, "loading". After a long time, noting happened, and it seemed that the stick (NTFS) is not recognized by it. I took out the stick and tried to reformat to FAT32. But the stick is not being recognized in my machine (Ubuntu 12.04). I tried the advices from USB drive not recognized after Erase Disk, without any success. When I tried Disk Utility, the stick is indicated as a generic device. See image, Formatting this device fails, saying, No medium found. Again see image, gparted does not even list this device. The same thing happens for fdisk. It is not listed there. Have I totally lost this stick? What should I do?

• Is installing Rational Developer for Power Systems on Ubuntu recommended?

  I am interested in installing Rational Developer for Power 8.0.3 (RDPi) on Ubuntu 12.04. I would like to know if other Ubuntu users have run into issues? Is it recommended or should I just stick to using RDPi in Windows 7 in VirtualBox? I have done some research, but could not divine a solution. From IBM's Developerworks website: Ubuntu clients are obviously missing from the list. While not officially supported, we have had some success in running ... on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and later. • Is there a COMPLETE tutorial for upgrading for dummies?

  I have tried upgrading in the past with zero success doing a backup of stuff and futilely attempting to enter my stuff into the new version. My email accounts and folders, my bookmarks and web browser info and of course my photos. In the past I have received messages that the back up files were done using version XXX and cannot be read by the new system, as an example. I need a hand-holding tutorial to go from 11.04 to 12.10. • Installer doesn't recognise windows 7 install

  I will start off saying I searched a bit for this problem with little success. You see, I am an utmost noob when it comes to Ubuntu and Linux based OS (hence why I want to install it and discover it) and the thread I found were too specific for me to do anything with. Therefore, if you find a thread that is noob-friendly and answers my question, please link it below or please try to answer as simply as possible :) The problem: I want to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit alongside Windows 7 on my main hard drive (to get the choice which one to start when booting). Pop the CD in, reboot and get to the installer screen. I know I'm supposed to have 3 options, but I'm only given the option to erase my hard drive or "do something else". Therefore, my question is: how do I make Ubuntu recognise Windows 7, so it may install alongside it?

• Icons don't display for some application launchers

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop for some time now. Since the first day only I have been facing the problem with icon images of some application not appearing up. It causes a lot of inconvenience in locating/identifying an application to be launched. I have updated my Ubuntu with the latest build today only but still the problem persists. I have googled around and tried everything relevant available out there but with no success. Please note that reinstalling Ubuntu is NOT an option right now.

• Ubuntu 12.04 on MBPro, Early 2011, options

  I have a 2.2 GHz i7, 4GB MacBook Pro 8.3, AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB, Early 2011. As far as I see I have two options, running Ubuntu on this hardware: VMWare/Virtualbox and Ubuntu in a VM, I already ordered a 16G RAM upgrade for this. Wipe OSX and go Ubuntu native, with 16G RAM, yay ! I'm kinda leaning towards option 2 as I tend to spend 90% of my time in dev VM's at work anyway. All my other machines at home, and most at work are Ubuntu/Linux as well. I have a Mac mini on standby for the odd Itunes backup/sync. If I don't have to keep OSX around, I would like to get rid of it altogether. Ubuntu support on Mac hardware seems to be a hit and miss affair as far as I can tell. Does anyone have good success running a recent version of Ubuntu on this hardware ? Thanks

• Cinnamon on Ubuntu 12.04 stoped working after menu edditing

  I have recently installed cinnamon on ubuntu 12.04 with success. After installing MS Office with wine my menu got messy so I tried to edit it with alacarte. After having found out that alacarte is not the proper way to edit it, I right clicked on the menu icon to edit. After just a few editing steps it breaks and cinnamon stopped working (no menus, no desktop icons, no applets, no window decoration, nothing). Now, when I login with cinnamon I just get the background image. I can login with gnome though. I have tried to completely remove cinnamon and nemo and reinstall it but it didn't help. I have no idea of how to get any king of diagnostics so if you ask something please explain how to do it or post a link with explanations. Many thanks for the help, I hope I will not need to format the pc again to make it work.

  In my quest to keep my fingers on the pulse of MDM, I recently found a pretty interesting article.  The article was published in Information Week and provides some interesting statistics from a recent survey conducted by the analyst firm, The Information Difference.  Let's take a look: Of the 130 organizations surveyed, 53% have live operational MDM implementations 81% of those with live operational MDM implementations report broad success - a huge improvement over 2011's 54% 64% developed a business case prior to their MDM deployment, while a daring 32% went ahead without a business case.    The article goes on to talk about the shift in vendors from focusing on customer data and product information management to one that is oriented around multi-domain master data management as well as other realities around MDM.  Take a look at the article. • Unable to Boot Into Windows 7 after Ubuntu 10.04 Update

  I'm running a dual boot Windows 7 / Ubuntu 10.04 system. I ran the Ubuntu update last night, and today when I tried to boot into Windows 7, it goes straight to the windows recovery on my Acer 5517 laptop. I've spent the entire day trying to resolve this with no success. I used my Windows 7 Recovery Disk to reset the mbr, but that didn't help. The system was working perfectly prior to the update. It appears that now Grub is pointing to the recovery partition rather than the primary partition. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I don't relish the idea of reformatting and starting from scratch.

• Issues with external mounting after pysdm removed

  So, I'm very new to ubuntu. I was having troubles getting my external hard drive to be read/write permission. It's owner is my macbook, and writing on the drive was repeatedly denied. In trying to sort this out, I tried the Nautilus commands (no success), installed the PYSDM application, changed some things (as suggested by this user in this forum http://askubuntu.com/a/113992 )but then found that I was getting an error message whenever I tried to mount an external storage device. The error is: Unable to mount DERPSTICK error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: [mntent]: line 14 in etc/fstab is bad mount: only root can mount /dev/sdc1/ on /media/sdc1 Others with similar problems put their fstab up here, but I'm not sure how to bring it up, or if I should even try. • How far can you get in iOS without learning PhotoShop or another graphic design program? [on hold]

  I'm in the process of learning iOS, and I'm coming from a web dev background where CSS controls 70-90% of the UI, and Python/C++ desktop dev where there are highly customizable UI toolkits for most things. I'm trying to figure out how people make good-looking apps without graphic design skills. You always hear about some 8 year old or 14 year old who made a successful app. So I assume that even if the required code was relatively basic, the app must have looked good if it was a success. But I find it really unlikely that these kids have advanced PhotoShop skills as well as having learned iOS programming at such a young age. Frankly, the same goes for most independent app developers....as they say, unicorns don't exist. So what's the deal? Can you make a good-looking, market quality app without those skills? What are the limitations?

• Ubuntu 12.10 dual boot windows 7 not working

  When i install ubuntu, and the computer restarts it doesn't show the boot managaer so it always boots in windows 7. I tried to change the default os, and ubuntu wasn't even listed in it. Then I read a how to on it, it showed how to size the partions and make them correctly, but it still didn't work. I tried easyBCD and still no success. I've tried installing it about 4-5 times and i still can't get it. What can i do to fix it?

• Getting web results URLs in millions [closed]

  I looked at all sites of SO and couldn't find any suitable to ask this question but posting here as nearest match to scenario After 1 months research I basically give up on getting all URL's from a search results programmatically, I looked at Google Search API to find a way to get millions of search results "URL's" to be specific to a text file or something relative but no success, but I am 100% there must be a way or trick of doing it. Real Question : Is there anyway programmatically or manually I can get 1000+ search results (URLs using search query e.g. "Apple" returns million of results on google and I want as much as possible URLs of them results in a text file)

• Connect to a VPN from a Virtual Machine

  I am running an Ubuntu ditro inside a VMWare virtual machine with a bridged connection on a windows 7 host. What I am trying to do is to have the virtual machine connect to a VPN, but I'm not having much success. At first, the system was using wicd, but I replaced it with network-manager who's supposed to have OpenVPN support. The problem is, even tho i've purged the wicd installation, there're connections shown in the network manager, and still, I'm able to access the net. I've also added the openvpn data in the network manager tab, but it's shown as never used. PS: when I try to stop and start the NetworkManager service, an error message pops up telling me that there's not such a service, but apt-get tells me i've already installed it...

• Get exact time of each click - AdWords

  I have an AdWords campaign running and want to get a list with all clicks and the exact time the click occured. And I want to do this without having a tracking code on my homepage. So it needs to be via the API (AdWords/Analytics). You might think know that this is not possible. But big Bid Management tools (e.g. Kenshoo) know all details of every click and they don't have tracking code of my website (only on the success page of my contact form). How is that possible? The dimensions in AdWords only let me group the clicks at the hour level.

• What to do about unreadable grub screen

  I have been upgrading my Ubuntu, from 10.04 to 12.04 to 12.10 to 13.04 in the past few days with varying degrees of success. One problem that has been constant through every step of the upgrade, since 12.04 is that a portion of the text on the grub screen is off the screen to the left so I can't completely make out what the options are. As I am having other troubles with the upgrade I would like to at least be able to see what options there are to me at boot time. Is there some sort of grub configuration that can handle this?

  I need to install Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player to check an URL for testing purpose. Could someone post me the exact steps to acheive this task? Note: I have already tried installing IE in Ubuntu 10.10 and later versions (12.04) with Wine. It works fine. But I don't get success installing Windows Media Player.   I've been running at a fast pace for the past few days, so I'm going to add a few posts here to catch up. Day 3 of the DevDays event in the Netherlands was a success. • Yet another Java EE 6 book

  We have a new Java EE 6 book in store! This one from Packt Publishing is called "Java EE 6 Development with NetBeans 7" by David Heffelfinger who is also author of Java EE 5 and GlassFish books. This book holds a step-by-step book documention all of the Java EE 6 features and APIs (including CDI) using the IDE with the best Java EE out-of-the-box experience : NetBeans 7. It uses GlassFish as the default container and PrimeFaces as a JSF component suite. We've covered several Java EE and GlassFish books before and I can't help but think that given writing books never helped authors retire early, having so many good books on Java EE 6 says something about its success among developers.

• Is it better to use a Database or a data structure for network stack?

  I've built a multi threaded messaging application in C and I'm currently using a MySQL Memory table to save the session ID, but I'm not sure whether this was a good decision or not. It works like this, the application sends a message and saves the source session ID in the MySQL table. When the application gets the success response it will remove the session's ID from the MySQL table, or if it received an error response then it will keep the ID to be retried later. I've built it this way so that I don't need to care about building a data structure by myself, and the Database provides flexibility when it comes to querying it. Do you think this is appropriate or do I need to use something else? Please note that the application is expecting to handle a large number of transactions/sec.
