• Design issue with ATG CommercePipelineManager

  The definition of runProcess() method in PipelineManager is public PipelineResult runProcess(String pChainId, Object pParam) throws RunProcessException This gives me an impression that ANY object can be passed as the second param. However, ATG OOTB has PipelineManager component referring to CommercePipelineManager class which overrides the runProcess() method and downcast pParam to map and adds siteId to it. Basically, this enforces the client code to send only Map. Thus, if one needs to create a new pipeline chain, has to use map as data structure to pass on the data. Offcourse, one can always get around this by creating a new PipelineManager component, but I was just wondering the thought behind explicitly using map in CommercePipelineManager

• Correct (pretty) window redraw during the creation

  Does anyone know what is a correct way to redraw window during lengthy initialization operations? Say I have HWND with NULL brush, and it does some not so quick child window initialization (Window initialization is not so quick on Vista and 7, especially on netbooks, even with threaded app). With this config window stays black for half a second on slower laptops. But if I supply window color brush, it seems that there are some sort of child controls or something that draws black squares on top of it, which also seems ugly. Even though the controls are created without WS_VISIBLE initially. Oh, the window has the WS_EX_COMPOSITED style, which should do the double buffering to avoid flicker. But it still behaves ugly. Are there any other tricks I've forgotten, missed?

• Can a Client Link to My JavaScript, Hosted on a Different Domain?

  Is it possible for me to supply a client with a snippet of HTML which contains a reference to a javascript file that I host? They want to paste this HTML into their CMS, so that when their page loads, it'll load our content. I was under the impression that there was cross domain security preventing this from being possible. What if, instead of linking to the JavaScript, I gave them the snippet of HTML with the JavaScript already included so instead of <div> <!-- link to js --> </div> I gave them <div> $.get(/*url to my content*/); </div> Would that work?

• Tableview with sections managed by fetched results controller

  Hi, I'm quite new to CoreData and need help with one issue. I have tableview which simply lists cities stored in SQLite db. City is defined by "cityId" and "name" attributes. Data are fetched using NSFetchedResultsController and everything works fine except that I can't figure out how to make FetchedResultsController to group cities by first letter of city names. When I supply "name" for sectionNameKeyPath argument of initWithFetchRequest:managedObjectContext:sectionNameKeyPath:cacheName: method, it creates section for each city, which is obviously something I don't want. I can't figure out how to create an expression which would make it work in way I need. thanks for any tips and/or advices on this Matthes

• Extracting rightmost N bits of an integer

  In the yester Code Jam Qualification round http://code.google.com/codejam/contest/dashboard?c=433101#s=a&a=0 , there was a problem called Snapper Chain. From the contest analysis I came to know the problem requires bit twiddling stuff like extracting the rightmost N bits of an integer and checking if they all are 1. I saw a contestant's(Eireksten) code which performed the said operation like below: (((K&(1<<N)-1))==(1<<N)-1) I couldn't understand how this works. What is the use of -1 there in the comparison?. If somebody can explain this, it would be very much useful for us rookies. Also, Any tips on identifying this sort of problems would be much appreciated. I used a naive algorithm to solve this problem and ended up solving only the smaller data set.(It took heck of a time to compile the larger data set which is required to be submitted within 8 minutes.). • C++ method chaining including class constructor

  Hello, I'm trying to implement method chaining in C++, which turns out to be quite easy if the constructor call of a class is a separate statement, e.g: Foo foo; foo.bar().baz(); But as soon as the constructor call becomes part of the method chain, the compiler complains about expecting ";" in place of "." immediately after the constructor call: Foo foo().bar().baz(); I'm wondering now if this is actually possible in C++. Here is my test class: class Foo { public: Foo() { } Foo& bar() { return *this; } Foo& baz() { return *this; } }; I also found an example for "fluent interfaces" in C++ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluent_interface#C.2B.2B) which seems to be exactly what I'm searching for. • Make XStream ignore one specific private variable

  Hi guys, I have a little problem with a class I am currently writing a save function for. I'm using XStream (com.thoughtworks.xstream) to serialize a class to XML using the DOMDriver. The class looks like this: public class World { private Configuration config; public World(Configuration config) { this.config = config; } } So, the issue here is that I do not want to serialize Configuration when serializing world, rather I'd like to give XStream a preconstructed Configuration instance when calling fromXml(). Problem here is mainly class design, Configuration holds a private reference to the GUI classes and therefore serializing Configuration means serializing the whole application completely with GUI etc.. And that's kind of bad. Is there a way to instruct XStream to not serialize the private field config, and upon load supply XStream with a configuration instance to use? greetings Daniel

• Explicit call of Runnable.run

  Hi, I have a question. Somebody, who was working on my code before me, created some method and passed Runnable as parameter, more likely: void myMethod(Runnable runnable){ runnable.run(); } Then calling myMethod out of main looks like: public static void main(String args[]) { try { myMethod(new Runnable(){ public void run() { //do something...; }}); } catch (Throwable t) { } } So, to supply parameter to myMethod I need to instantiate object of (in this case anonymous) class implementing Runnable. My question is: is it necessary to use Runnable in this example? Can I use any different interface? I mean I can create new interface with single method i.e. interface MyInterface{ void doThis(); } then change look of myMethod: void myMethod(MyInterface myObject){ myObject.doThis(); } And of course client too: public static void main(String args[]) { try { myMethod(new MyInterface (){ public void doThis() { //do something...; }}); } catch (Throwable t) { } } Or maybe something is about Runnable?!

• Can't get ellipsis to work on Android

  Hi, I have a TextView. I want it to ellipsize if longer than its available width. This does not work unless the input string has no spaces... can anyone provide an example of this working? I've tried different combinations of: singleLine="true" maxLines="1" scrollHorizontally="false" none of these have any effect. Again, if I supply a string that has no spaces in it, then the ellipsis appears correctly. What am I missing? I've tried this on 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, all same problem. Thanks

• Get the default link configuration gcc uses when calling the linker.

  I am using the CodeSorcery arm-eabi-gcc tool chain and I have a problem using ld separate from gcc I can compile my simple program and link it, if I let gcc call the ld. This works not problem g++ test.cpp; # Works This does not work because of missing symbols g++ -c test.cpp ld -o test crti.o crtbegin.o test.o crtend.o crtn.o -lgcc -lc -lstdc++; # Fails Notice I am adding the gcc libraries to the ld command What am I missing? Also if there is a better way to make configuring ld to using the default gcc linking? Thanks

• How to feed an xml database with tags obtained thru html forms ?

  Hello! Not a programmer, I begin with xml, html forms and xslt on Mac. I plan to use a form to post short texts in a xhtml page and invite end users to add some annotations to the said text. The users would select a specific part of the text posted and each annotation would stand for one specific chain of characters. My goal is to consolidate the tags obtained from various user's annotations to one xml "knowledge base" containing the original text with all the revision indicators. Then I plan to use xslt sheets to product various reports based on the tags obtained. my two questions are : 1- am I dreaming ? Is it really possible to do that with xml, xforms, xslt without using java, php, ajax or other seasoned programmer's tools ? 2- What should be my focus for further explorations aiming in that direction ? • Java - How to find that the user has changed the configuration file?

  I am developing a Java Desktop Application. This app needs a configuration to be started. For this, I want to supply a defaultConfig.properties or defaultConfig.xml file with the application so that If user doesn't select any configuration, then the application will start with the help of defaultConfig file. But I am afraid of my application crash if the user accidentally edit the defaultConfig file. So Is there any mechanism through which I can check before the start of the application that whether the config file has changed or not. How other applications (out in the market) deal with this type of situation in which their application depends on a configuration file? If the user edited the config file accidentally or intentionally, then the application won't run in future unless he re-installs the application.

Noting that only the first kiss requires the alternation, any kiss that is not a part of the chain due to the first kiss can very well have a hug on the 2nd next person, this is the code I have come up with. This is just a simple mathematical calculation, no looping, no iteration, nothing. But still I am getting a timed-out message. • Facebook like iframe ignores my specified href

  I have Javascript that imputes (computes and injects) HTML into my DOM for the Facebook "Like" function. I need to specify a "canonical" URL because the actual URL doesn't reflect all the DOM manipulations that have been made (driven by user activity on the Web "page"). Alas, Facebook's code doesn't use the url I supply but the window.location value (which has #hash aspects that influence the page's presentation, but that aren't accessible to the server). Anyway... why is FB's code ignoring the url I give to it? • App Engine remote_api with OpenID

  Hi, I've recently tried to switch my app engine app to using openID, but I'm having an issue authenticating with remote_api. The old authentication mechanism for remote_api doesn't seem to work (which makes sense) - I'm getting a 'urllib2.HTTPError: HTTP Error 302: Found', which I assume is appengine redirecting me to the openid login page I've set up. I guess I'm missing something fairly obvious. Currently my remote_api script has the following in it - remote_api_stub.ConfigureRemoteDatastore(app_id=app_id, path='/remote_api', auth_func=auth_func, servername=host, secure=secure) where auth_func is def auth_func(): return raw_input('Username:'), getpass.getpass('Password:') Any ideas what I need to supply to remote_api? • PC reboots spontaenously: debugging tips [closed]

  I swapped my core 2 duo for a quad core recently, and generally things run fine, but every now and then my computer just restarts. I don't even get a blue screen (Vista 32). Core temp isn't a problem. My thinking is that my power supply is inadequate, but I haven't been able to test that (one idea was to under clock the cpu to see if that helped, but going up in speed was the only simple thing to do in the BIOS) Two cases where I semi-consistanly get problems: - Borderlands windowed after some period of time (and some other games, but Borderlands does it pretty regularly) - watching a video (e.g. quicktime/vlc) and having another video running Another thought is non-cpu heat? Maybe the graphics card? Any thoughts on how to track this down appreciated. Thanks!

• Build Pipelining and Continuous Integration with Maven and Hudson

  Currently the my team is considering splitting our single CI build process into a more streamlined multi-stage process to speed up basic build feedback and isolate different ci concerns. The idea we had was to have each stage exist in Hudson as a different build with the correct maven goal or maven plugin execution, then chain them together using the post-build hooks of Hudson. However to my knowledge, Maven as a build tool mandates that any lifecycle phase which is performed automatically builds every preceding lifecycle phase. This presents a number of problems the most significant of which is that maven is recreating the build resources with each distinct call and not using those of the previous stage. This not only breaks the consistency of the build lifecycle but has much more unnecessary processing overhead. Is there a way to accomplish pipelining with CI using Maven? Assuming there is, is there a way to let Hudson know to use those resources built from the previous stage in the next one?

We we're now told we should supply a build.xml file as an input for an ant builder. I have never heard of or used ant before. I also saw Eclipse supports it.   Hi Everyone, So in C# I am trying to access a file on a network, for example at "//applications/myapp/test.txt", as follows: const string fileLocation = @"//applications/myapp/test.txt"; using (StreamReader fin = new StreamReader(FileLocation)) { while(!fin.EndOfStream()){ //Do some cool stuff with file } } However I get the following error: System.IO.IOException : Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. I figure its because I need to supply some network credentials but I'm not sure how to get those to work in this situation. Does anyone know the best way (or any way) to gain access to these files that are on a a password protected location? Thanks in advance!!

• Django design question: extending User to make users that can't log in

  The site I'm working on involves teachers creating student objects. The teacher can choose to make it possible for a student to log into the site (to check calendars, etc) OR the teacher can choose to use the student object only for record keeping and not allow the student to log in. In the student creation form, if the teacher supplies a username and a password, it should create an object of the first kind - one that can log in, i.e. a regular User object. If the teacher does not supply a username/password, it should create the second type. The other requirement is that the teacher should be able to go in later and change a non-logging-in student to the other kind. What's the best way to design for this scenario? Subclass User and make username and password not required? What else would this affect?

• How to reduce the number of cert validation requests... (IE is killing me slowly)

  On a customer's internal network, I can make a request to my SSL site using IE6 SP1 (on Win2K) and see one cert validation requests, but if I use IE6 SP2 (on XP) 13 separate cert validation requests get fired off. Needless to say, this slows down my page load a lot. Firefox loads the page just fine with no unnecessary cert validation requests. The server is Apache running a pretty new lampp stack. All the server certificate / CA chain configurations seem to be fine (users can authenticate w/ trusted certs, the system can communicate to other systems with that server cert, etc.) Is there anything I can do from a configuration standpoint? Any other ideas at all?

• How can I use different metadata for a Dynamic Data form view and the list view?

  We often need a summarised list view with more detailed form view. So far, the only two way I can think of doing this are using a 'custom' list or form view than uses a sumplimentary 'remove' or 'add' list of fields anb generalise this over all entity sets, or create a custom metadata provider that infers somehow which columns to supply. Are there any other ways of distinguishing these two views? PS, I wrote a fun little general details page, that handles insert, edit, and view, all on one page template. Maybe I could somehow use that? It's here.

• How to execute a large PHP Script ?

  Well basically I may want to execute a script that may take as much as 1 hours as well. What I really want to do is Send SMS to my users using a third party API. So its basically like I supply my script with an array of phone numbers and fire the method to send SMS. However assuming it take 5 seconds to send 1 SMS and I want to send 1000 SMS which is roughly 1 - 2 hours. I can use set_time_limit() because I am on shared host. One way to do this is store numbers in a session and execute each SMS and use javascript to refresh that page until end. This way I need to keep my browser open and the execution will stop if my Internet Connection is disconnected. So, Is there any better way to do this ? Hope I am clear enough to explain what I want? I want to execute a large script that may take hours to execute without getting timeout.

  I'm trying to implement an OpenID provider with DotNetOpenAuth. I supply an OpenID url, and the consumer discovers my endpoint. I log into my provider, and the provider returns a Claimed Identifier and a Local Identifier to the consumer. But the consumer response has the following exception: The OpenID Provider issued an assertion for an Identifier whose discovery information did not match. Assertion endpoint info: ClaimedIdentifier: http://localhost/OpenIDUser.aspx/myuser ProviderLocalIdentifier: http://localhost/OpenIDUser.aspx/myuser ProviderEndpoint: http://localhost/OpenIDAuth.aspx OpenID version: 2.0 Service Type URIs: Discovered endpoint info: [] http://localhost/OpenIDAuth.aspx is my endpoint. http://localhost/OpenIDUser.aspx/myuser is my user identifier url, and I can browse to it successfully. It has a link to the endpoint in the header as follows: <link rel="openid.server" href="http://localhost/OpenIDAuth.aspx"></link> No matter what I try, the "Discovered endpoint info: []" part of the exception is always an empty array. Can anyone please help?

• Inherit appenders from calling instance in log4j or logback

  In my program I have 2 separate streams of logging events (calling them streams for simplicity, in reality its 2 appenders). Stream1 contains client logging and Stream2 contains control logging. Now this might seem easy, except that certain classes can be both in the client logging and server logging, depending on the situation. Complicating this further is the fact that a command that a client wants takes place in 2 separate threads (one being fetched randomly from a thread pool), so any kind of tracking with MDC or NDC isn't possible. What would really simplify this is if the logger could inherit the appenders from the calling instance. That way I can setup 2 appenders for 2 loggers and be done. However I have no idea how to do it cleanly or easily. Can anyone offer any advice on how to do so? Note: If something needs to be passed around, I do have a event bean that gets passed to everything in the chain that can be used if necessary.
