• Browser-based GUI for a python application

  I want to create a web/browser-based GUI for a command-line python application. The goal is to make use of HTML/JS technologies to create this GUI. As the application itself, it needs to run on Linux and Windows, and the interface will be accessible only from localhost (not exposed to internet). The GUI will contain 5 to 10 pages. I don't want a traditional desktop GUI that includes HTML/JS, but just a bunch of html files and some kind of controller between those and the application. I also want to make use of asynchronous programming (ajax like) so I can load and print data in the GUI without refreshing the whole page. I'd probably use jQuery for that and a couple other things. How would you recommend to design this? Performance is not the key here, I'm rather looking at reliability, portability and simplicity. I'm thinking of using a lightweight python HTTP server / framework (like CherryPy) and maybe later a Python templating system (at the begining it will just be a couple pages). EDIT: I'm looking for ideas/recommendations how to build this, not for alternatives to browser/web-based GUI.

• Screen becomes black after pressing dash or alt-tab

  I did an upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10. Unity 3d becomes a black screen after pressing the dash-button or after pressing alt-tab to switch between open windows. I can see the panel on the top(lock,sound,..) and the panel on the left (launcher) but the rest is black. It looks like a maximised black window. The open Windows are active but I cant see them. I logout by pressing logout in the right top corner and pressing enter (because logout is default focused on the dialogue screen) and leave unity3d. Unity3d worked with 11.04 very good. If I press the dash button the dash looks like an 16-Bit or 8-Bit window and buttons for maximise, minimise and close are displayed and looks inverted. I have rebooted my notebook just now and log in to Unity 3D and tested some features of Unity and everything works well. The black thing is only a layer. I can use my desktop but cant see anything because of the layer, but everything works.   For the first time in my life, I wished I had more number of years to live. The world has evolved from the cave man life to the man who is almost The Creator. When I was about 12 years old, I was taken to Chennai Planetarium for my school excursion. That day we were made to lie down in a dark room and the ceiling was full of stars and planets. All those were just videos but the day still stands in my mind. Same kind of experience in real is waiting for our future generations.Even though the English movies have gone beyond imaginations, we still have chances to bring those imaginations to real. You must be wondering why all these hype. Recently Airbus unveiled a news on transparent Airplane in 2050. This Airplane will have a body transparent to view the sky from all sides of the airplane when we are flying high above the grounds. And it will have all possible technologies under one roof that would give immense pleasure for the passengers. The journey would be an unforgettable one for each one of us.   It’s interesting to see the debate caused by the iPhone debate over Flash.  In the new version of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement, Apple bans Flash and Monotouch: 3.3.1 — Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited). In Adobe’s last SEC filing, they list the iPhone/iPad as a threat to their business. http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/796343/000079634310000007/form_10q.htm#riskfactors We offer our desktop application-based products primarily on Windows and Macintosh platforms. • Oracle to Join OECD Urban Roundtable for Mayors and Ministers

  Oracle is pleased to announce that Bastian Fischer, vice president and general manager for EMEA, Oracle Utilities, will participate in the 2010 Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) Urban Roundtable for Mayors and Ministers on 25 May in France. The roundtable, hosted by OECD Secretary General Angel Gurría, will help determine how cities can contribute to green growth incentives and address the challenges to success. The OECD is developing a global Green Growth Strategy that will identify policies and approaches that can shift production and consumption towards a clean, low-carbon and sustainable economy. Already, more than 500 European cities have signed up to the 2020 carbon pledge to reduce carbon emissions by 20 per cent in ten years. This initiative is driving the adoption of innovative technologies such as the smart gird, which deliver substantial benefits to support this mission by allowing utilities to manage their distribution grids more efficiently, reducing emissions and lowering the risk of outages. • How to become an expert web-developer?

  I am currently a Junior PHP developer and I really LOVE it, I love internet from first time I got into it, I always loved smartly-created websites, always was wondering how it all works, always admired websites with good design and rich functionality, and finally I am creating web-sites on my own and it feels really great. My goals are to become expert web-developer (aiming for creating websites for small and medium business, not enterprise-sized systems), to have a great full-time job, to do freelance and to create my own startup in future. General question: What do I do to be an expert, professional and demanded web-programmer? More concrete questions: 1). How do I choose languages and technologies needed? I know that every web-developer must know HTML+CSS+JS+AJAX+JQuery, I am doing some design aswell cause I like it and I need it for freelance also. But what about backend languages? Currently I picked PHP cause it's most demanded in my area and most of web uses it, but what would happen in future? Say, in 3 years, I am good at PHP and PHP frameworks by than, but what if some other languages get most popular? Do I switch to them? I know that good programmer is not about languages and frameworks but about ability to learn and to aim the goals, but still I think that learning frameworks for some language can take quite some time. Am I wrong? 2). In general, what are basic guidelines to be expert web-developer? What are most important things I should focus on? Thank you!

• What steps should I follow to start developing website applications?

  Hello, I've been developing desktop applications for about 4 years, using .NET, C++, C, and a little of Python. I've covered lots of topics while developing my applications, and even web technologies (cookies, GET/POST methods, when programming some scrapers/crawlers). I've been always waiting to start developing websites, preferably using PHP + MySQL, although other advises will be welcomed to make this question more useful and generic for others. I know I could use a CMS instead of starting from scratch, but sometimes I don't need an entire CMS to do minor things... What steps should I follow to create a website? Let's suppose I have a web designer. First of all, the designer designs the entire website (CSS, etc) and then I do the programming stuffs, like loading dynamically things from databases, doing some client-side stuffs with javascript, etc? Or how is the best way to do it? Edit: I'm not looking for tools/frameworks/languages suggestions. What I want to know is how a team (or a developer with a designer) starts creating a website. The steps they do, what tasks they do first, how they integrate the work, etc. An example of an answer could be: 1) Design the entire website with good CSS practices, using containers instead of tables in some cases, etc. 2) Use that design and develop the logic or the functionalities of the website. Of course, that's just an example. I'm looking for a good way to approach it, because I've been wanting to start on it but don't really know how exactly to organize the job :/

• High level vs. low level programming. Do I really have to choose?

  Every once in a while I'm asked in interviews which I like the best- low level or high level. It seems to me that the implicit message is that they are both a specialty and they want to know which direction I'm heading. The trouble is, I seem to like both. Low level is extremely challenging and often requires a great deal of esoteric knowledge. High level is where all the sexy things happen: applications that people use directly, results that can be easily demonstrated (showed off) in a way that is accessible to everybody, and you get to work with really advanced tools and interact with new technologies. I would really love to do both, even if it means alternating between them (I doubt there are jobs that will let me do both simultaneously), but I'm guessing that the industry rewards specialists more than generalists. Will it really be problematic career wise if I never choose one over the other? Is it practical to alternate between the two in the sense that if I were to leave a job doing one of them, I should experience no "friction" trying to get a job doing the other (assuming I'm reasonably in the loop)? Are there career opportunities where you get to do both? Do I really have to choose one over the other?

• I Could Sure Use Some Windows Azure Code Samples…

You have multiple options with Windows Azure, including the Software Development Kit, the Windows Azure Training Kit and now another one…. the Microsoft All-In-One Code Framework,, a free, centralized code sample library driven by developers' real-world pains and needs. The goal is to provide customer-driven code samples for all Microsoft development technologies, and Windows Azure is included. Once you hit the site, you download an EXE that will create a web-app based installer for a Code Browser.   Once inside, you can configure where the samples store data and other settings, and then search for what you want.   You can also request a sample – if enough people ask, we do it. • What are the boundaries between the responsibilities of a web designer and a web developer?

  I have been hired to do functional development for several web site redesigns. The company I work for has a relatively low technical level, and the previous development of the web sites were completed by a graphic designer who is self taught as far as web development is concerned. My responsibilities have extended beyond basic development, as I have been also tasked with creating the development environment, and migrating hosting from external CMS hosting to internal servers incorporating scripting languages (I opted for PHP/MySQL). I am working with the graphic designer, and he is responsible for the creative design of the web. We are running into a bit of friction over confusion between the boundaries of our respective tasks. For example, we had some differences of opinion on navigation. I was primarily concerned with ease-of-use (the majority of our userbase are not particularly web-savvy), as well as meeting W3 WAI standards (many of our users are older, and we have a higher than average proportion of users with visual impairment). His sole concern was what looked best for the website, and I felt that the direction he was pushing for caused some functional problems. I feel color choices, images, fonts, etc. are clearly his responsibility, and my expectation was that he would simply provide me with the CSS pages and style classes and IDs to use, but some elements of page layout also seem to fall more under the realm of "usability", which to me translates as near-synonymous with "functionality". I've been tasked with selecting the tools we'll use, which include frameworks, scripting languages, database design, and some open source applications (Moodle for example, and quite probably Drupal in the future). While these tools are quite customizable, working directly with some of the interfaces is beyond his familiarity with CSS, HTML, and PHP. This limits how much direct control he has over the appearance, which has lead to some discussion about the tool choices. Is there a generally accepted dividing line between the roles of a web designer and a web developer? Does his relatively inexperienced background in web technologies influence that dividing line?

• Record management system java web framework

  We're currently reconsidering technologies and frameworks to get more agile with "simple" RMS CRUD-based projects. In short, short-living things like this Right now we have a custom extension on top of SmartGWT but after some time it has proven not to be flexible enough. I also personally dislike the java-js compilation process and the whole GWT codebase. Not only is the design ugly, it also makes certain low-level js things very complicated if not completely impossible. So what I'm looking for is: closest to web as possible, like JSF or possibly Tapestry, it is very important to be able get "low" and weave framework if necessary. Happens more often than we thought. datagrid capable - Ext.js & PrimeFaces looks pretty good, Vaadin does too. db-schema generators (optional, no matter in which way) If it were only on me, I'd probably stick to Ext.js + custom rest-based java solution, possibly generated from database schema (not sure about concrete tooling yet). I only have experience with vanilla Ext.js, vanilla GWT and JSF 2.0 / Seam, so it hard for me to judge or even propose other frameworks. What would be your proposition? What are the problems you've faced? What was your solution and how hard do you think it was to deal with them in "big picture"?
