• What''s easy extensible technique to store game data?

  I'm looking for library/technique for storing my game resources - levels, object (effects,world info), items(price,effects,...), NPC(visual info, behavior), everything except graphics/audio stuff. I've seen lua used for Awesome WM configuration. protobuf looks good, but it seems to be designed for network communication. I've tried to write my own parser, but as the project grows it's more and more harder to manage it and catch all the bugs. My requiremets: stability easy extension of data without need to convert older versions to newer good(don't have to be the best) performance of loading not much coding not XML!

  I want to mount the device /dev/sda3 to the directory /foo/bar/baz. After mounting the directory should have the uid of user johndoe. So I did: sudo -u johndoe mkdir /foo/bar/baz stat -c %U /foo/bar/baz johndoe and added the following line to my /etc/fstab: /dev/sda3 /foo/bar/baz ext4 noexec,noatime,auto,owner,nodev,nosuid,user 0 1 When I do now sudo -u johndoe mount /dev/sda3 the command stat -c %U /foo/bar/baz results in root rather than johndoe. What is the best way to mount this ext4-filesystem with uid johndoe set?

  I am finally going to buy a domain I have been looking at. The domain owner wants me to give him my Godaddy account information and send him the payment via Paypal gift, so that there will be no extra charges. Should this cause suspicion? Does Paypal offer any kind of fraud protection? What is the best way to protect myself from fraud in this situation, without the need for escrow services, such as escrow.com? Any advice welcomed.   I have been running Ubuntu 10.04 with GeForce 8800 Ultra graphics card without any problems for many months until a few days ago, after some updates, everything stopped working. Can't use Stellarium (my favorite program) and everything (even the mousecusor) stops responding for a long time. Takes ages to load the desktop and everything is just "f..." B.t.w. I have a dual boot and WinXP is not having this problem with the 8800 card. So, elementary... What's going on between Ubuntu and Nvidia? Best regards Gunnar

  Is there any design pattern or practice recommended for business layer when dealing with multiple API version. For example, I have something like this. http://site.com/blogs/v1/?count=10 which calls business object method GetAllBlogs(int count) to get information http://site.com/blogs/v2/?blog_count=20 which calls business object method GetAllBlogs_v2(int blogCounts) Since parameter name is changed, I created another business method for version 2. This is just one example but it could have other breaking changes for which it requires me to create another method to support both version. Is there any design pattern or best practice for business/data access layer I should follow when supporting API Versioning?

• Programming to ANSI standards (for engineering)

  I am currently tasked to write a software to help engineers design standard compliant designs. If there is a bad design, software will report an error or warning. Maybe it's just me, but anyone who has done this should be familiar with the massive amounts of ANSI standards tables like this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nominal_Pipe_Size Computers are, as its name suggest, computing machines, not lookup machines. I feel that feeding formulas into computers and churning out standard compliant designs is much more efficient than doing memory intensive data lookups that are prone to human input errors and susceptible to "data updates". I actually think that there are formulas to calculate all those numbers, but nobody so far could give me that information. Anyone been through this before? What is THE best approach to this? • Has an open console any chance to give more strength to the indie game world ?

  I have heard about the GPX, but i don't really think the embedded market is mature enough in terms of performance, but what about the home console market ? I'm not talking about last-generation graphics, because that would be economically impossible, but what about an hardware as fast as a playstation 2/Xbox 1/Gamecube ? For games, the trick would be to ask some editors to recompile their best sellers for the new machine: those games being from the PSX age or even older console generations, I think this would have a very low cost job and they could still make some good profit, but I need to know if this is doable technically, considering the architecture which can be quite exotic. Do you think it would be a viable project to talk about to investors ?

• Good practices in screen states management?

  I wonder what are the best ways to organize different screens in a game? I am thinking of it like this: Inheriting a base State class, and overriding update and render methods, to handle the current screen. Then, under certain events a StateManager is able to activate another Screen State, and the game screen changes as only the current State is rendered. On the activation of a new screen, effects like fading could be added, and also the same goes for its deactivation. This way a flow of screen could be made. By saying when A ends, B starts, allowing for complex animations etc. Toughts?

• Java vs COBOL programming examples

  I am a COBOL programmer, desperately trying to learn and program Java. Although I understand the OO priciples and concepts, I am at a lost putting all together. I am trying to find some examples on how code will look in COBOL vs Java - something a bit more complicated than "hello world" [I am past that initial headache! :-)], that includes OO principles - basically, a decent 1000+ liner in COBOL, with the Java code to work through. After working through book after book, doing the examples, and even writing small java programs at work, I think working through an example I can compare will be the best way to getting my thinking cap converted, and being able to do in Java what I can do after 10 years with COBOL. Can anybody help?

  The idea is to take old games without modifying them, but have the graphics card apply a series of filters to their output before sending them to the monitor. A very crude example would be to take a game that has a resolution of 640x480 and do: Increase the resolution to 1280x960 Apply a blur (low pass filter) Apply a sharpen (1 + high pass filter) These steps may not necessarily be the best to improve the visuals of an old game, but there are a lot of techniques that are well-known in image processing for this purpose. The question is, do the (NVidia) graphics cards give the ability to load a program that modifies the screen before sending it to the monitor? If so, how are they called and what terminology should I use to search? I would be comfortable with doing the programming myself if this ability is part of a library. Also, would the solution be different between Windows and Linux? If so, either is fine, since most of the games are probably runnable by wine.

• Run server side script

  I'm in the process of deploying my first website which is written is ASP.NET. I need to run a server side script at set intervals during the day which updates a database even if there is nobody using the site. I was led to believe that using Windows task scheduler would be the best option but now I've joined a hosting company the layout is not really how I was expecting. It's a shared hosting with basic FTP and no apparent built in task scheduler. The hosting company support is not very good and haven't been able to advise how I could do this so hoped to get help here on options before I consider changing company. [The hosting company starts with 1 and ends with 1 :)]

I want to be able to have a fairly simple, reliable wiki attached to a site's subdomain (wiki.mysite.com). I'd prefer it as a service, updates handled for me, I don't want to see any code! • Proper password handling for login

  I have read a lot about PHP login security recently, but many questions on Stack Overflow regarding security are outdated. I understand bcrypt is one of the best ways of hashing passwords today. However, for my site, I believe sha512 will do very well, at least to begin with. (I mean bcrypt is for bigger sites, sites that require high security, right?) I´m also wonder about salting. Is it necessary for every password to have its own unique salt? Should I have one field for the salt and one for the password in my database table? What would be a decent salt today? Should I join the username together with the password and add a random word/letter/special character combination to it? Thanks for your help!

• Where to start in creating a massive multiplayer 3D Java game [on hold]

  I am planning on creating a massive multiplayer world and I am wondering where to start. I am quite inexperienced in the field of Java but I have researched into it and learned that it is perhaps my best bet in creating this project is Java for the fact that it has a much easier learning curve than C++ to beginners and still capable of holding massive amounts of players at a time. My question is simple: Should I start the game by creating a single player prototype and introducing multiplayer later as I become more experienced or start with multiplayer before I am completely experienced in the field. • Facebook connect vs. OpenID

  I just started working on a new project that has a general login feature. One suggestion in a meeting was to look into Facebook Connect or OpenID as an alternative. I'm curious if there's one that has less of a learning curve, or if they can both be used on the same site. Also, when you use either, do you have them initially create the account and just get a verify True/False back that you then use to set up a local user account? I what about forgotten passwords? I'm kind of curious as to best practices for integrated this type of login with a "traditional" one where you store the user info yourself. Thanks, D

  I'm building an open source SMSC from scratch; it's almost finished, The SRI and the forwardSM operations are working, but I still have few things to do for the receiving part. I've built the SS7 stack already, but I'm using DB for saving the TCAP transactions IDs to be updated later to get/generate responses. My approach is this: I created memory table (heap table), saved the TCAP TID in the database, then compared the received TCAP TID with the TIDs saved in the database and then decide whether to end the TCAP session or continue. What is the best way to implement it? I'm thinking of doubly linked list that holds the TCAP TID. Am I going towards the right direction, or should I use another technique other than database or D-linked list? Should I leave it as it is, and let the database do the job for saving the TIDs? Please note that I'm using SCTP implementation available on Linux (lsctp) as a transport protocol, the language I'm using is C and the DB is MYSQL.

• Intercepting the Unity logout

  I want to copy some data from another machine to a local computer on a regular basis. At the moment I'm researching different solutions and try to find the one which fits best. Basically I want to open a network connection (or use an existing one), make a VPN connection and start a rsync process. This should be done on every logout of my desktop session or on shutdown. One possible solution might be to somehow intercept the Unity shutdown and execute a script. So is there a possibility to execute a script on GNOME/Unity shutdown? I'm aware that you can do it on system shutdown. How can I do this?

• Browser window size statistics?

  I was wondering, are there any statistics available on what size users have their browser set to nowadays? I know the screen resolutions (we have analytics, which shows those as well) but I doubt a lot of people with 1280*xxx and higher still browse full-screen though. My boss is determined to keep our website 900px wide though, because that way people with 1800*xxx resolutions can have two browser windows next to eachother without having to scroll horizontally. I have never seen anyone browse with two adjacent browser windows like that except here at my current job, so I'm kind of doubting whether this is the best decision or just his personal preference. Anyone that can help out here?

• What source control to use for my private gaming server?h

  It has sql server components, client launcher, server software. I want to use an online resource where people can make updates, and make it easier to roll out any changes to players. Most of the files are just text files, or gtx image files. I don't think this qualifies as open source, so I don't know what to do. I tried github, and have a free account there, but it was really clunky, mass adding every file to be comitted. I really dont' like subversion but if that's the best option, i'll use it. The other people who will need access to the files will have no familiarity with any kind of source control, so I need an easy system for them to download files, make changes, and comit to the repository. Any suggestions?
