  • LinkedIn Slow on Windows XP with IE 8

    On my desktop, which runs Windows XP SP2 with IE 8, LinkedIn takes ages to load. However, with Chrome, it loads comparitively quicker. However, on my laptop which runs Windows Vista with IE8, it is awesomely quick! What could be the reasons?

  • DirectX works for 64-bit but not 32-bit

    I'm trying to play a game (Civilization 5) which was previously working but no longer. I believe I've narrowed it down to a DirectX issue because I get an error running dxdiag.exe in 32 bit mode. My goal (at least I believe) is to get Direct3D Acceleration "Enabled" in dxdiag (as it is in 64 bit dxdiag). A very similar issue is here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-gaming/direct3d-acceleration-is-not-available-in-windows/4c345e6e-dc68-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?page=1 The proposed answer, which looks very promising, doesn't seem to work for me. Like other users in that thread, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Direct3D\Drivers does not have a SoftwareOnly key to change. I even tried manually adding it as a string and dword, to no avail. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, and before you ask, yes I've tried updating (also uninstalling, reinstalling) my drivers. I've also tried doing the same with DirectX (and Civilization 5 for that matter). Been debugging for some 4+ hours now after a full day of work and I've run out of ideas. I'm hoping somebody knows the solution here! :) Here's what I see when I open dxdiag: DxDiag has detected that there mgiht have been a problem accessing Direct3D the last time this program was used. Would you like to bypass Direct3D this time? I should also note that I've tried the following steps as Microsoft suggests, but I'm not able to do so as the "Change Settings" button is disabled. To determine this, click the Display tab, and then under DirectX Features, check to see whether DirectDraw, Direct3D, and AGP Texture Acceleration appear as Enabled.   • How to format new HDD windows XP

    I just bought new SATA 1TB Baracuda HDD, I inserted and my windows didn't recognize it. Because I didn't have any other OS or anything to format it I used Centos i386 installation to format it. I of course disconnected my original disk from the motherboard and formatted it using CENTOS.. but now when I come back to the windows I can't format this HDD. Its recognized as RAW. What can I do to make it work?

    I keep getting this error when trying to launch Internet Spades on a Windows XP machine: Spades is unable to start. Close some other programs and try again, or try reinstalling Spades using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. I used the Add/Remove programs to disable, then enable games. It asked for the Windows XP CD which I put in. Did some stuff like it was working. Still get the same error message.

    By default in IIS7, Windows Authentication was turned off and I had to make a configuration change to activate it. When I did that there was a description for Windows Authentication that explained this should only be used for intranet sites, not public facing websites. When you consider NTLM/Kerberos does not use plain text I am not sure why Microsoft have decided this, all of a sudden. Can anybody explain?

    Hi, I have tried running windows xp development virtual machine under windows 7 and the performance was dreadful. I'm considering installing Linux and running the virtual machine from the Linux, but I'm not sure whether I can expect any performance gains? It's a 2.4ghz core 2 duo machine with 4gb ram and 5400 rpm hdd. Can somebody please recommend very cut down version of linux that can run VMWare player and isn't resource hungry? Thank you

I am able to access the share using \xyz.abc.def.com as well as the IP but unable to access the share using \xyz.def.com a) DisableStrictNameChecking is 1 on Windows Server 2008R2 b) NetBios over TCP is default. I tried setting it to Enabled but no luck I get the error 0x80004005, unspecified error

Under Windows there is the Universal Extractor, I am looking like something like that for Mac. I don't know if there is a universal solution to this problem or if I would need a extractor specific to the type of installer. In my case I am actually trying to get the installer from Gog.com to extract so I can use them with Boxer.

    When trying to download a file found on the Microsoft downloads center that starts with, for example, http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/8/7/(some_GUID)/(some_file_name.ext) i get a timeout with "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". More information says: Internet connectivity has been lost. The website is temporarily unavailable. The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable. The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain. If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section. Diagnose Connection problems says: Windows cannot find the host name "download.microsoft.com" using DNS Bear with me while i expand on the problem: It all started when i tried to download Windows XP mode for my Windows 7 machine. I went to the virtual PC site, then thru the motions of Windows Genuine Advantage which validated ok, but when it redirects to grab the file just times out with above error. (NB: i also tried with the latest Chrome and Firefox but no use due to the Genuine Advantage stuff, so i decided to stick with IE). I am behind an ADSL2+ modem router connecting via wireless (Win 7 Pro laptop); so i hop over to the desktop connected via ethernet (Vista Business), and same result; begin to think site download.microsoft.com site is down. So i give it a break an read up on EDNS, flushing the cache, hosts file, etc... Try again an hour later on the Win 7 machine, still no go; so i turn off the Win 7 (software) firewall, and lo and behold, i can connect and grab any files from download.microsoft.com; (...nice, so we have a Micro$0ft firewall preventing access to a Micro$0ft website, no wonder my auto-updates kept failing but that's another story). But i still am not happy that the desktop connected via ethernet still cannot get to download.microsoft.com, even though i turned off all firewalls, defenders, anti-virus, etc. What is so special / specific about the url download.microsoft.com, any other site is ok, including www.microsoft.com. Any networking guru know what's REALLY going on, and how can i get the desktop to connect? Ping download.microsoft.com - Ping request could not find host download.microsoft.com. Please check the name and try again. Ping google.com or even www.microsoft.com works gives me an IP address. NB: On the wireless laptop ping download.microsoft.com works, i get xxxx.ms.akamai.net [202.7.177.33].
