• Adding text labels to sliders in iPhone Settings application

  When configuring a Settings.bundle as part of an iPhone application bundle, it's trivial to add minimum and maximum value images to sliders (PSSliderSpecifier), but not simple maximum and minimum text labels. http://developer.apple.com/iPhone/library/documentation/PreferenceSettings/Conceptual/SettingsApplicationSchemaReference/Articles/PSSliderSpecifier.html iPhone gurus: Is anyone aware of a simple means to apply text labels to these sliders for use within the Settings application (therefore, no slider subclassing shenanigans; it all has to be done via a plist)? I suppose I could just use an image of the label but...ew. Bonus points if there's a way to show the current value of a slider in some sort of number format.

  I am using GridView in ASP.NET 2.0. I am want to show the details from 3 tables (SQL2005) in the GridView per my search crieteria (Name of Visitor,Passport Number,Name of Company). It is working, but I want to use a wildcard for searching by first letter of "Name of Visitor". I have my code in the QueryBuilder in GridView (using Configure Datasource). • Talking to a server in Win32; how do I see the server's response?

  I am new to Win32 programming. sprintf(lpszBuff,"HELO Mail-Server\r\n"); send(s,lpszBuff,strlen(lpszBuff),0); recv(s,lpszBuff,100,0); cout << lpszBuff; In here I connect to a local mail server. The buffer contains the request I send, the same buffer contains the reply send by the browser. How do I see the reply? cout <<buffer doesn't show any output. I am doing this on VC++ 2008.

  Cubism was designed, by mbostock's own words, for maximum information density - which means it generally wants to display one datapoint per pixel. While this is useful in many cases, it doesn't help when your data itself is not that dense. In these cases, you get ugly, staccato-style graphs like so: Is there a way to interpolate my data/graph within Cubism to show a nice, smoothed graph? EDIT: After adding keepLastValue to the metric, I get this: Here is the same data as shown in Graphite: I would like to smooth the Cubism view to look more like Graphite (with the added awesomeness of the horizon overplotting)

• Download multiple files in background in Android

  Basically I'm trying to make a little app for watching offline content. So there's a moment where the user selects to download the contents (and the app should download about 300 small files and images). I'd like to show the user how does the process go if he enters the proper activity. Showing a list of all the files, telling what has been already downloaded, in progress or waiting for download. My problem is that I really don't know what approach to take for achieve this. Since the download should last until finished I imagine the solution is an Service, but whats best? an IntentService, a Bound Service or an Standard Service calling a startService() for each download? And how can I keep my objects updated for displaying them later? should I use a database or objects in memory? Thanks

• Checkbox not checking inside div in Firefox

  Weird problem. I don't know if anyone can shed some light on this? I have a checkbox inside a div. It works fine in IE but not Firefox. I have to click the space around the checkbox that is occupied by the div (sort of like a label) for the checkbox to tick on and off. Directly clicking the checkbox does not show it as ticked on or off, even though in firebug it is showing that it is in a checked state and an unchecked state. Only in FF does this happen.....

• Problem with caching images on server- jQuery

  Hi I have the weirdest problem. I am implementing a simple gallery with a use of nivo slider jQuery plugin. Everything works perfectly when I test it on my local machine, however I am having an issue on an online hosted server. The images do not tend to appear when you first open the website. There seems to be an issue with caching the images. when you reload the page (simple f5) everything works fine. Rather than showing you the code, I think it would be better to show the site so you can see what firebug shows you: http://teslacreations.com/orangery/test.php Does anyone have any ideas how to solve it?

  Is there a framework which can be used in your application, to make it expose internal objects on some port for inspection. for.e.g. after i start my application in this case a GUI Application, and then say launch http://localhost:9100 then it should show me the statistics of the app. I played a bit with HttpListener accepting connections and then outputting raw HTML, it works fine for simple tasks, but there is too much worked involved if i have make a proper object browser. • How to get total number of potential results in Lucene

  I'm using lucene on a site of mine and I want to show the total result count from a query, for example: Showing results x to y of z But I can't find any method which will return me the total number of potential results. I can only seem to find methods which you have to specify the number of results you want, and since I only want 10 per page it seems logical to pass in 10 as the number of results. Or am I doing this wrong, should I be passing in say 1000 and then just taking the 10 in the range that I require?

• IE 8 and text fading

  I have a problem with fading text in IE 8, 7 and 6 (obviously). The text has a black outline during the animation that completely ruins the effect. Is there a workaround? I've read a bunch of answers about this problem and none made sense. Please take a look at this simple jsFiddle http://jsfiddle.net/LhSK7/ in IE 8, and show me how to fix it if possible. Edit: screenshot of the problem: http://i43.tinypic.com/1z6h1th.png I thought it might be because of the VirtualBox, but all other browsers display it correctly in VirtualBox. Edit #2: the problem can sort of be solved by setting the background color of the element being faded, which while still pretty ugly in IE 8 and below, at least gets rid of the black outline.

  Hi, I have two tables. One named status like this... user_id | status --------+----------- 1 | random status from user 1 2 | random status from user 2 3 | random message from user 3 4 | staus from user 4 1 | second status for user1 etc... and another named users_following like this... user_id | is_following --------+----------- 1 | 2 1 | 3 2 | 1 3 | 2 meaning that user 1 is following both users 2 and 3 etc... So, let's say I chose user 1. What is the best query (performance wise) to show the status updates of users that user 1 is following, in this case users 2 and 3 currently I have something like SELECT * from status WHERE user_id IN(SELECT is_following FROM users_following WHERE user_id='1') LIMIT 0,5 but I don't think this is good for performance if a user was following thousands+ of users

• Form submission and hyperlinks using GET and POST

  I have a search resource, the user can perform searches by filling out a form and submitting it, the create action is called, the Search is saved, the show action is called, and the results are displayed. This all happens with the default POST, and all works fine. The user may want to save his search in the saved_search table (i don't use the Search table for this purpose as this table stores all searches for the purpose of compiling statistics, and gets cleared on a regular basis). Once the Search is saved, it can be re-run by clicking a hyperlink, this is where i start to get problems. I see no way of getting my hyperlink to run the create action of Search, with a POST request, and the necessary data. I then decided to try to get both form submission and the hyperlink to perform a search using a GET request, i was unable to get form_for to run my Search create action using a GET request, it always seems to get routed to my index action. Can someone suggest a good restful solution to this problem please. Many thanks

• How to create url preview in javascript?

  Can someone help me with creation of a url preview script in javascript? What I mean is this. Say I have a link on my site, I want the user to be able to mouse over the link, and have an image pop up that shows what the target of the link looks like. Don't worry about the css, I got that working, I just need the actual script to show the image. Currently I am doing it by showing up an iframe that actually renders the page, but this is not scalable and looks ugly. No, having the page display premade images is not an option, since the links will be linking to dynamically generated user content. thanks

• Undocumented overload of string.Split() ?

  According to both Intellisense and MSDN doc on string.Split, there are no parameterless overloads of string.Split. Yet if I type in string[] foo = bar.Split(); It compiles. And it works. I have verified this in both Visual Studio 2008 and 2010. In both cases intellisense does not show the parameterless overload. Is there a reason for this? Are there any other missing overloads from the MSDN/Intellisense docs? Usually browsing through overloads in intellisense is how I best determine which overload to use. I'd hate to think I am missing other available options throughout the .Net framework.

• Cross-referencing UML models in VS 2010

  I am just starting to explore/use the UML modeling support in Visual Studio 2010 Umltimate. I have created two model projects within a single solution. Let's call them Model A and Model B. I have some data types (classes) defined in Model B. I want to use them as return types for operations in Model A. However, I cannot figure out how to make the types defined in Model B show up in Model A when attempting to set return type on an operation. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!   I have a web application project made in Visual Studio 2008. Well, I added a jquery folder and added it to source control and other such things. I forgot to add it to the visual studio project though. How do I add the existing folder now? I've tried just creating a new folder and naming it jquery but it gave me a cryptic error "the directory is already on the disk ... if you want to see this directory then check the Show All Files option in the project file" Yet I looked and saw no such option. Is the only way around this to rename jquery to jquery2 and then create a new folder via visual studio named jquery and copy all my files into it?

• Using PHP's $_COOKIE to create cookie.txt for cURL

  Hi, I'm running Drupal and Mediawiki on my server under the same domain. They are connected to each other with extensions/modules. Meaning if I log in to Mediawiki, it automatically logs into Drupal also. Mediawiki has some extensions that filter the information shown on the page. What I want to do is to show that filtered information from Mediawiki on my Drupal page. I'm trying to fetch the data with PHP cURL, but I'm not able to force it to use the login information. How can I convert PHP's $_COOKIE into cURL cookie.txt format? I suppose after that I'm able to fetch the data from Mediawiki with the right permissions. • Are memory leaks ever ok?

  Is it ever acceptable to have a memory leak in your C or C++ application? What if you allocate some memory and use it until the very last line of code in your application (for example, a global object's deconstructor)? As long as the memory consumption doesn't grow over time, is it OK to trust the OS to free your memory for you when your application terminates (on Windows, Mac, and Linux)? Would you even consider this a real memory leak if the memory was being used continuously until it was freed by the OS. What if a third party library forced this situation on you? Would refuse to use that third party library no matter how great it otherwise might be? I only see one practical disadvantage, and that is that these benign leaks will show up with memory leak detection tools as false positives.
