• How do I pass a lot of parameters to views in Dango?

  I'm very new to Django and I'm trying to build an application to present my data in tables and charts. Till now my learning process went very smooth, but now I'm a bit stuck. My pageview retrieves large amounts of data from a database and puts it in the context. The template then generates different html-tables. So far so good. Now I want to add different charts to the template. I manage to do this by defining <img src=".../> tags. The Matplotlib chart is generate in my chartview an returned via: response=HttpResponse(content_type='image/png') canvas.print_png(response) return response Now I have different questions: the data is retrieved twice from the database. Once in the pageview to render the tables, and again in the chartview for making the charts. What is the best way to pass the data, already in the context of the page to the chartview? I need a lot of charts, each with different datasets. I could make a chartview for each chart, but probably there is a better way. How do I pass the different dataset names to the chartview? Some charts have 20 datasets, so I don't think that passing these dataset parameters via the url (like: <imgm src="chart/dataset1/dataset2/.../dataset20/chart.png />) is the right way. Any advice?

• Python access an object byref / Need tagging

  I need to suck data from stdin and create a object. The incoming data is between 5 and 10 lines long. Each line has a process number and either an IP address or a hash. For example: pid=123 ip=192.168.0.1 - some data pid=123 hash=ABCDEF0123 - more data hash=ABCDEF123 - More data ip=192.168.0.1 - even more data I need to put this data into a class like: class MyData(): pid = None hash = None ip = None lines = [] I need to be able to look up the object by IP, HASH, or PID. The tough part is that there are multiple streams of data intermixed coming from stdin. (There could be hundreds or thousands of processes writing data at the same time.) I have regular expressions pulling out the PID, IP, and HASH that I need, but how can I access the object by any of those values? My thought was to do something like this: myarray = {} for each line in sys.stdin.readlines(): if pid and ip: #If we can get a PID out of the line myarray[pid] = MyData().pid = pid #Create a new MyData object, assign the PID, and stick it in myarray accessible by PID. myarray[pid].ip = ip #Add the IP address to the new object myarray[pid].lines.append(data) #Append the data myarray[ip] = myarray[pid] #Take the object by PID and create a key from the IP. <snip>do something similar for pid and hash, hash and ip, etc...</snip> This gives my an array with two keys (a PID and an IP) and they both point to the same object. But on the next iteration of the loop, if I find (for example) an IP and HASH and do: myarray[hash] = myarray[ip] The following is False: myarray[hash] == myarray[ip] Hopefully that was clear. I hate to admit that waaay back in the VB days, I remember being able handle objects byref instead of byval. Is there something similar in Python? Or am I just approaching this wrong?

  I am having trouble piping through sed. Once I have piped output to sed, I cannot pipe the output of sed elsewhere. wget -r -nv http://127.0.0.1:3000/test.html Outputs: 2010-03-12 04:41:48 URL:http://127.0.0.1:3000/test.html [99/99] -> "127.0.0.1:3000/test.html" [1] 2010-03-12 04:41:48 URL:http://127.0.0.1:3000/robots.txt [83/83] -> "127.0.0.1:3000/robots.txt" [1] 2010-03-12 04:41:48 URL:http://127.0.0.1:3000/shop [22818/22818] -> "127.0.0.1:3000/shop.29" [1] I pipe the output through sed to get a clean list of URLs: wget -r -nv http://127.0.0.1:3000/test.html 2>&1 | grep --line-buffered -v ERROR | sed 's/^.*URL:\([^ ]*\).*/\1/g' Outputs: http://127.0.0.1:3000/test.html http://127.0.0.1:3000/robots.txt http://127.0.0.1:3000/shop I would like to then dump the output to file, so I do this: wget -r -nv http://127.0.0.1:3000/test.html 2>&1 | grep --line-buffered -v ERROR | sed 's/^.*URL:\([^ ]*\).*/\1/g' > /tmp/DUMP_FILE I interrupt the process after a few seconds and check the file, yet it is empty. Interesting, the following yields no output (same as above, but piping sed output through cat): wget -r -nv http://127.0.0.1:3000/test.html 2>&1 | grep --line-buffered -v ERROR | sed 's/^.*URL:\([^ ]*\).*/\1/g' | cat Why can I not pipe the output of sed to another program like cat?

• Jekyll - How to approach asset processing (minification, spriting...)

  I recently switched to Jekyll and I find the conversion pipeline works really well. However I'm stuck on which approach to take when the process is many inputs to one output (ex: concatenating CSS files, creating image sprites...) I know several tools that can do it, that can be called either from the command line or in Ruby code directly. For ex: Jammit css sprites Compass sprites My current solution is a few Jekyll plugins that call these tools. However, it has the following problems: 1. SASS files should be processed, then concatenated/minified SASS-CSS is a Converter, and the concatenation is a Generator run on the output. Unfortunately generators are run first, which means the concatenation is always a step behind (I have to run the build twice) 2. Jekyll does not know about the source/output relationship With converters, when I run Jekyll in server mode, if I change a SASS file it automatically runs the conversion to CSS. When dealing with concatenation/spriting, I haven't found a way to do the same. I end up having to run a "normal" Jekyll build (not server auto) to update the concatenated files and sprites. • Trimming bit of the beginning off a recorder waveform

  I've got a flash 10.1 app that lets me record microphone input to a wav without a media server, which I am saving to an Amazon S3 bucket. I have another process running on a server which gets wavs from this bucket, converts to mp3 using LAME and puts them into another bucket. This all works fine, but in converting wav mp3, about 0.1sec or so of silence is added to my sound. In the application this are being used in, perfect sync is critical, so I need to trim off that little bit. If I have to trim it off the original waveform that is okay, I don't expect anything important to happen in that first fraction of a second. What is the best way to go about this? I am using Adobe's WavWriter to convert by ByteArray into a proper waveform. Is there a way I can easily trim off the first few samples from my ByteArray without invalidating the structure? Alternatively, is there a good server-side tool I can use to trim the wav before running it through LAME, or an argument I can give LAME? Or, could I even trim that sound off the mp3 after it has been converted? Thanks!

• Fetching real time data from excel

  I am seriouly looking for your valuable help first time here. If possible, plese help me. I am developing a VB.NET app in which i read "real time data" from a excel sheet using "Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel" i.e. excel automation. All cells in excel sheet are fetching stock data from some LOCAL DDE Server like "=XYZ|Bid!GOLD", "=XYZ|Bid!SILVER", "=XYZ|Ask!SILVER" and so on... Some cells also having fixed values like "Symbol", "Bid Rate", "32.90" etc. Values of DDE mapped cells (i.e. =XYZ|xxxx!yyy) are continuously changing. THE PROBLEM is here..."FIXED values" from excel cells are coming quite ok to my app but all DDE mapped cells values are coming "-2146826246" (When datasource local dde server ON) or "-2146826265" (OFF). Although, if i use C#.NET, it's all ok but not with Vb.NET. I want to display range of excel (A1 to J50) into VB.NET ListView which are changing in every 200ms (5 times in every 1 second) ================ Important ====================================================== Is it possible to BIND "listview items/columns values" with "excel cells" or some local memory variables ?? Currently, i am reading excel "cell by cell" and trying to put values in .NET listview but CPU USES are very high as well as it's toooo slow process. If yes, then how please ? I am a VFP developer but new to .NET It's very easy in VFP then why not in .NET ?? Please guide me, if someone has the solution...

• Edit Contact code worked in 1.6 but doesn't work on Droid 2.1?

  Hi All, I had some fairly simple code in my app to invoke Edit Contact activity on a known good contact index that worked in Android 1.6 but is broken for me now in Android 2.1 on the Droid. • multithreading issue

  I have written a multithreaded crawler and the process is simply creating threads and having them access a list of urls to crawl. They then access the urls and parse the html content. All this seems to work fine. Now when I need to write to tables in a database is when I experience issues. I have 2 declared arraylists that will contain the content each thread parse. The first arraylist is simply the rss feed links and the other arraylist contains the different posts. I then use a for each loop to iterate one while sequentially incrementing the other and writing to the database. My problem is that each time a new thread accesses one of the lists the content is changed and this affects the iteration. I tried using nested loops but it did not work before and this works fine using a single thread.I hope this makes sense. Here is my code: SyncLock dlock For Each l As String In links finallinks.Add(l) Next End SyncLock SyncLock dlock For Each p As String In posts finalposts.Add(p) Next End SyncLock ... I did not include the rest of the code which shows the threads working but this is the essential part where my error occurs which is basically here postlink = finalposts.Item(i) i = i + 1 ERROR: index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection Is there an alternative?

  Hi folks. I have an issue while displaying several forms of the same model on the same page. The problem is that with the NameFormat, the fields have the same ID : $this->widgetSchema->setNameFormat('display[%s]'); Will display <form class="update_display_form" id="update_display_0" action="/iperf/web/frontend_dev.php/update_display" method="post"> <input type="checkbox" name="display[displayed]" checked="checked" id="display_displayed" /> <label for="display_displayed">test</label> </form> <form class="update_display_form" id="update_display_1" action="/iperf/web/frontend_dev.php/update_display" method="post"> <input type="checkbox" name="display[displayed]" checked="checked" id="display_displayed" /> <label for="display_displayed">truc</label> </form> And if you click on the second label, it will activate the first checkbox So I thought I could use the object id to make them unique : $this->widgetSchema->setNameFormat('display'.$this->getObject()->getId().'[%s]'); But then I can not process the request, since I don't know the name of the parameters. The best option I found was to set an ID : $this->widgetSchema['displayed']->setAttributes(array("id" => "display".$this->getObject()->getId() )); but then I totally loose the connections between the label and the checkbox. The problem would be solved if I could change the "for" attribute of my label. Does somebody know how to do that ? Or any other option ?

  Hi, I'm in the process of building a dynamic table in which you can add/remove rows & columns so it varies in size depending on what the user wants. Its purpose is to store properties for a product, but there can be from 1 to 10 different properties(columns) per product, and multiple instances(rows) of the product as well. Here's a screenshot of what I mean http://i40.tinypic.com/nbqkxc.jpg As you can see I need the structure to be completely up to the client which is where I'm getting stuck. I've started writing a custom DataSet that has "add column" & "add row" buttons, and have built a custom Table with Textboxes in each cell which builds from that dataset. I have no idea how to store the data on submit though, and to make it even more complex I need to store this in the database as a string which I think I can do by converting it to XML. • Sending series of images to display like a movie on iPhone

  Allow me to elaborate more. On the server, we will have a program that will take data from iPhone and process that data and produce series of images. Each time an image is generated, it will be send back to display on iPhone. I have done all of the things above using UDP, OpenGL, and such. It works. The images are transferred to iPhone and can be displayed, but it is slow. The image's resolution is around 320 x 420 and we send the image pixels by pixels. This naive implementation leads to a slow framerate. I can see around 2-3 frames per second. There are also some UDP packets dropped, and this is expected. Are there any sort of compression method available for something like this? Are there any other method that can make this better? NOTE: please don't just write "compression" as an answer, because we are aware that we will need to do it in some ways.

• Why is OCR(MODI.MiLANGUAGES.miLANG_ENGLISH, true, true) causing an OCR running error?

  Hi folks, I am using MODI to read tiff images and do what I need to do with the text. Some images work fine and then other tiff images always cause the method, OCR(MODI.MiLANGUAGES.miLANG_ENGLISH, true, true) to fail. I have researched this and tried different variations such as 'false','false' in the parameter list. I have also tried SYSDEFAULT instead of English but I still get the error. Can anyone please tell me why it would fail on some tiff images and not on others? I have done some research and found this answer: One possible cause is MODI trying to process a file without any recognisable text. A blank document, or one which has only drawings/scribbles and is effectively blank, will cause this exception. Obviously this is not good enough as there is no way I can have an app that decides to OCR some images and not others. I handle the exception, but the OCR object is not then initalised so I can't do what I need to do from there. This is a bloody nightmare! Why can't the method just do it's bloody job and if the image has some unreadable pages then just ignore them? I am using Windows 7 Ultimate and Office 2007 Ultimate. • Fast Lightweight Image Comparisson Metric Algorithm

  Hi All, I am developing an application for the Android platform which contains 1000+ image filters that have been 'evolved'. When a user selects a photo I want to present the most relevant filters first. This 'relevance' should be dependent on previous use cases. I have already developed tools that register when a filtered image is saved; this combination of filter and image can be seen as the training data for my system. The issue is that the comparison must occur between selecting an image and the next screen coming up. From a UI point of view I need the whole process to take less that 4 seconds; select an image- obtain a metric to use for similarity - check against use cases - return 6 closest matches. I figure with 4 seconds I can use animations and progress dialogs to keep the user happy. Due to platform contraints I am fairly limited in the computational expense of the algorithm. I have implemented a technique adapted from various online tutorials for running C code on the G1 and hence this language is available Specific Constraints; Qualcomm® MSM7201A™, 528 MHz Processor 320 x 480 Pixel bitmap in 32 bit ARGB ~ 2 seconds computational time for the native method to get the metric ~ 2 seconds to compare the metric of the current image with training data This is an academic project so all ideas are welcome, anything you can think of or have heard about would be of interest to me. My ideas; I want to keep the complexity down (O(n*m)?) by using pixel data only rather than a neighbourhood function I was looking at using the Colour historgram/Greyscale histogram/Texture/Entropy of the image, combining them to make the measure. There will be an obvious loss of information but I need the resultant metric to be substantially smaller than the memory footprint of the image (~0.512 MB) As I said, any ideas to direct my research would be fantastic. • "Exclusive" DirectDraw palette isn't actually exclusive

  We're maintaining an old video game that uses a full-screen 256-color graphics mode with DirectDraw. The problem is, some applications running in the background sometimes try to change the system palette while the game is running, which results in corrupted graphics. We can (sometimes) detect when this happens by processing the WM_PALETTECHANGED message. A few update versions ago we added logging (just log the window title/class/process name), which helped users identify offending applications and close them. MSN Live Messenger was a common culprit. The problem got worse when we found out that Windows Vista (and 7) does it "by itself". The WM_PALETTECHANGED parameters point towards CSRSS and the desktop window. In Vista, a workaround that often worked was to open any folder (Computer, Documents, etc.) and leave it open while running the game. Sounds ridiculous, but it worked - in most cases. In Windows 7, not even this workaround worked any more. Users found that stopping some services (Windows Update and the indexing service) also resolved the problem on some configurations. Some time ago I just started trying random things in hope of finding a solution. I found that setting the GDI palette (using Create/SelectPalette) before setting the DirectDraw palette (using IDirectDrawPalette::SetEntries) would restore the palette after it became corrupted (WM_PALETTECHANGED handler). SetSystemPaletteUse and calling SetPalette on the primary surface helped some more. However, there is still perceivable flickering when an application tries to steal the palette, which is especially prominent during fades. Question: is there a way to get a "real" exclusive palette, which completely disallows other applications changing the Windows palette as long as our game retains focus?

  Hi, everybody! I've googled some tutorials, browsed some SO answers, and was unable to find a recipe for my problem. I'm writing a web site which is supposed to display almost realtime stock chart. Data is stored in constantly updating MySQL database, I wrote a find_by_sql query code which fetches all the data I need to get my chart drawn. Everything is ok, except performance - it takes from one second to one minute for different queries to fetch all the data from the database, this time includes necessary (My)SQL-server side calculations. This is simply unacceptable. I got the following idea: if the data is queried from the MySQL server one point a time instead of entire dataset, it takes only about 1-100ms to get an individual point. I imagine the data fetch process might be browser-driven. After the user presses the button in order to get a chart drawn, controller makes one request to the database and renders, say, a progress bar, say 1% ready. When the browser gets the response, it immediately makes an (ajax) request, and the server fetches the next piece of data and renders "2%". And so on, until all the data is ready and the server displays the requested chart. Could this be implemented in rails+js, is there a tutorial for solving a similar problem on the Web? I suppose if the thing is feasible at all, somebody should have already done this before. I have read several articles about ajax, I believe I do understand general principles, but never did nontrivial ajax programming myself. Thanks for your time!

• Throttling CPU/Memory usage of a Thread in Java?

  I'm writing an application that will have multiple threads running, and want to throttle the CPU/memory usage of those threads. There is a similar question for C++, but I want to try and avoid using C++ and JNI if possible. I realize this might not be possible using a higher level language, but I'm curious to see if anyone has any ideas. EDIT: Added a bounty; I'd like some really good, well thought out ideas on this. EDIT 2: The situation I need this for is executing other people's code on my server. Basically it is completely arbitrary code, with the only guarantee being that there will be a main method on the class file. Currently, multiple completely disparate classes, which are loaded in at runtime, are executing concurrently as separate threads. I inherited this code (the original author is gone). The way it's written, it would be a pain to refactor to create separate processes for each class that gets executed. If that's the only good way to limit memory usage via the VM arguments, then so be it. But I'd like to know if there's a way to do it with threads. Even as a separate process, I'd like to be able to somehow limit its CPU usage, since as I mentioned earlier, several of these will be executing at once. I don't want an infinite loop to hog up all the resources. EDIT 3: An easy way to approximate object size is with java's Instrumentation classes; specifically, the getObjectSize method. Note that there is some special setup needed to use this tool.

• TFS 2010 Build gives WorkItemStore error when Create Work Item on Failure is enabled

  I'm using TFS 2010 Build. I have a build definition that uses the DefaultTemplate.xaml template that's stock in TFS 2010, and the Create Work Item on Failure property is set to True in the build definition. I deliberately made a change in my project that breaks the build. When the build runs, I see the compilation error reflected in the TFS Build log within Visual Studio, but I get the error "Value cannot be null. Parameter name: WorkItemStore" when TFS Build next tries to generate a Work Item for the broken build. I tracked down the activity in DefaultTemplate.xaml (see the rather lengthy path to it below) where the Work Item is created for a broken build, and I see it uses the Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Build.Workflow.Activities.OpenWorkItem class to create the Work Item. The appropriate values seemed to be filled out in the Properties window for the Create Work Item activity, so I don't see where I can pass WorkItemStore to it and I don't even know appropriate values for this setting. • SQL: script to create country, state tables

  Consider writing an application that requires registration for an entity, and the schema has been defined to require the country, state/prov/county data to be normalized. This is fairly typical stuff here. Naming also is important to reflect. Each country has a different name for this entity: USA = states Australia = states + territories Canada = provinces + territories Mexico = states Brazil = states Sweden = provinces UK = counties, principalities, and perhaps more! Most times when approaching this problem, I have to scratch together a list of good countries, and the states/prov/counties of each. The app may be concerned with a few countries and not others. The process is full of pain. It typically involves one of two approaches: opening up some previous DB and creating a CREATE script based on those tables. Run that script in the context of the new system. creating a DTS package from database1 to database2, with all the DDL and data included in the transfer. My goal now is to script the creation and insert of the countries that I'd be concerned with in the app of the day. When I want to roll out Countries X/Y/Z, I'll open CountryX.sql, and load its states into the ProvState table. Question: do you have a set of scripts in your toolset to create schema and data for countries and state/province/county? If so, would you share your scripts here? (U.K. citizens, please feel free to correct me by way of a comment in the use of counties.)

• Is there an XML XQuery interface to existing XML files?

  My company is in education industry and we use XML to store course content. We also store some course related information (mostly metainfo) in relational database. Right now we are in the process of switching from our proprietary XML Schema to DocBook 5. Along with the switch we want to move course related information from database to XML files. The reason for this is to have all course data in one place and to put it under Subversion. However, we would like to keep flexibility of the relational database and be able to easily extract specific information about a course from an XML document. XQuery seems to be up to the task so I was researching databases that supports it but so far could not find what I needed. What I basically want, is to have my XML files in a certain directory structure and then on top of this I would like to have a system that would index my files and let me select anything out of any file using XQuery. This way I can have "my cake and eat it too": I will have XQuery interface and still keep my files in plain text and versioned. Is there anything out there at least remotely resembling to what I want? If you think that what I an asking for is nonsense please make an alternative suggestion. On the related note: What XML Databases (preferably native and open source) do you have experience with and what would you recommend?

• "Priming" a whole database in MSSQL for first-hit speed

  For a particular apps I have a set of queries that I run each time the database has been restarted for any reason (server reboot usually). These "prime" SQL Server's page cache with the common core working set of the data so that the app is not unusually slow the first time a user logs in afterwards. One instance of the app is running on an over-specced arrangement where the SQL box has more RAM than the size of the database (4Gb in the machine, the DB is under 1.5Gb currently and unlikely to grow too much relative to that in the near future). Is there a neat/easy way of telling SQL Server to go away and load everything into RAM? It could be done the hard way by having a script scan sysobjects & sysindexes and running SELECT * FROM <table> WITH(INDEX(<index_name>)) ORDER BY <index_fields> for every key and index found, which should cause every used page to be read at least once and so be in RAM, but is there a cleaner or more efficient way? All planned instances where the database server is stopped are out-of-normal-working-hours (all the users are at most one timezone away and unlike me none of them work at silly hours) so such a process (until complete) slowing down users more than the working set not being primed at all would is not an issue.

  I have a server control that wraps an underlying class which manages a number of indexes to track where it is in a dataset (ie: RenderedRecordCount, ErroredRecordCount, NewRecordCount, etc.). I've got the server control rendering great, but OnDataBinding I'm having an issue as to seems to happen after CreateChildControls and before Render (both of which properly manage the iteration of the underlying indexes). While I'm somewhat familiar with the ASP.NET page lifecycle, this one seems to be beyond me at the moment. So... How do I hook into the iterative process OnDataBinding uses so I can manage the underlying indexes? Will I have to iterate over the ITemplates myself, managing the indexes as I go or is there an easier solution? [edit: Agh... writing the problem out is very cathartic... I'm thinking this is exactly what I will need to do...] Also... I implemented the iteration of the underlying indexes during CreateChildControls originally in the belief that was the proper place to hook in for events like OnDataBinding (thinking it was done as the controls were being .Add'd). Now it seems that this may actually be unnecessary. So I guess the secondary question is: What happens during CreateChildControls? Are the unadulterated (read: with various <%-tags in place) controls added to the .Controls collection without any other processing?

• Skip Checkout in Magento for a downloadable product

  Hello Magento boffins. I am using Magento to build an eBooks site. For the release, we plan to have a number of free downloadable books. We were hoping that it would be possible to use the normal Magento 'catalog' functionality to add categories with products underneath. However, since these are free downloadable products, it doesn't really make sense to send users through the checkout when they try to download. Does anyone know of a way to create a free downloadable product which bypasses the checkout altogether? I have noticed that there is a 'free sample' option for downloadable products, but I would prefer not to use this if I can as I plan to use this field for its intended purpose when I add paid products. [EDIT] I have noticed that some of you have voted this question down for 'lack of question clarity'. For clarity, I want: to know if it is possible to create a downloadable product in Magento which doesn't require users to go through the usual checkout process (since it is free) and which is not the 'Free Sample' field of a downloadable product Unfortunately I don't think I can ask this any more eloquently.
