• Windows Embedded Compact 7

  This will be the official name of the new release of Windows CE. Windows Embedded Compact 7 is available as a public CTP and it already supports a wide range of CPUs and both the device emulator and VirtualPC emulated environments. So I’ll have to learn a new (and longer) name for my favorite OS… but I (and all my two readers!) will be able to test it as soon as the download from connect web site completes (I'm sorry for my readers, but you'll have to download it by yourselves). Here’s a link for the download (it's free but you’ll have to register on connect with a valid LiveId): https://connect.microsoft.com/windowsembeddedce Remember that this is still a beta (or “Community Technology Preview” if you speak marketing language) and so it’s better to not install it on your main development PC (or, at least, backup everything before installation) and that the features and performances you’ll get from this beta may not be the same ones of the final release of the OS. I will nonetheless immediately tell you what your age is. How do I do this? Let’s do the algebra. Let A denote your age (2A + 7) 5 = 10A + 35 so it is of the 3 digit form XY5 Now make two numbers out of the result - The last digit and the number before it. The Last digit is obviously 5, the other 2 (or 3 for a centenarian) and this number is the age + 3. Example: I am 76 years old and here is what happens when I do the steps 76 x 2 = 152 152 + 7 = 159 159 x 5 = 795 This is made of 79 and 5. And … 79 – 3 = 76 A note to the socially aware mathemagician – it is safer to do it with a man. The chances of a veracious answer are much, much higher! The trick may be accomplished on any 2 or 3 digit number, not just one’s age, but if you want to know your date’s age, it’s a good way to elicit it. • Lost WiFi after 12.10 upgrade

  I received my new Dell Vostro 2420 last week, and just got around to upgrading from 11.10 to 12.10. Unfortunately, like many others (after researching the issue), I no longer have WiFi. I have tried every sudo command given that worked for others, and still can't get my wireless to function. I am new to Linux, so any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance! Edit: I can connect via ethernet, just not via wifi. (If it's the case of the invalid certificate I don't mind ignoring any checks)

• Problem with dpkg-preconfigure, how to correct?

  I was trying to install TeamViewer, and I followed the instructions here even though they specify 11.10 instead of 12.04 (what I'm running). In particular, I executed. $ wget http://www.teamviewer.com/download/teamviewer_linux.deb $ sudo dpkg -i teamviewer_linux.deb The dpkg command failed, and after this point my packaging system has been broken. The software center instructs me to try: $ sudo apt-get -f install which leads to Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Correcting dependencies... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: teamviewer7:i386 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 17 not upgraded. 9 not fully installed or removed. Need to get 89.0 kB of archives. • Why can't I install from software center?

  There was a problem upgrading to Firefox 13. This error kept returning: /var/cache/apt/archives/firefox_13.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1_i386.deb W: Waited for dpkg --assert-multi-arch but was not there - dpkgGo (10: There are no "child" processes). Now it seems that there is some problem with dpkg and I can't install anything from software center. I already tried to clean previous packages with sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf and then sudo apt-get update, it didn't work. When running sudo dpkg --configure -a, I get this: dpkg: problems with dependencies prevent the configuration of firefox-globalmenu: firefox-globalmenu depends on firefox (= 13.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1); however: The package is not installed. dpkg: error while processing firefox-globalmenu (--configure): problems com dependencies - leaving unconfigured There has been found errors while processing: firefox-globalmenu What should I do to fix this?? EDIT: I don't have the necessary expertise to understand why what I did worked and what was causing the conflict, but anyway, since there was a problem with firefox-globalmenu:, I went to synaptics package manager, I removed this particular package and reinstalled it. After that, I was able to install Firefox from synaptics and also any other applications from software center. However, still there was a problem, when running sudo apt-get update, the following kept returning: Failed to get gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_main_binary-i386_Packages Verification code hash doesn't match. E: Some archives index failed at being downloaded. They have been ignored, or older copies are used instead. So I typed sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf in terminal and then again sudo apt-get update and everything is fine now. I did this before an answer was posted, anyway I agree the problem was that particular package and its removal. So I'll mark the below answer as accepted.

  As some of you may have noticed, we've recently opened a new repository in the Code Tools project for small utilities which can be used to gather info about the OpenJDK code base and builds. 1 The latest addition is a utility for analyzing the class file versions in a collection of class files. I've posted an example set of results from analyzing the class files in an OpenJDK build on Linux. 2. Most of the files are version 52 files as you would expect, but there is a surprising number of version 51 and 50 files, as well as a handful of v45.3 files as well. Digging deeper, it turns out that Nashorn is still using version 51 class files, and the Serviceability Agent is still using version 50 class files and one 45.3 class file, leaving the remainder of the 45.3 class files coming from RMI. • Windows Azure Horror Story: The Phantom App that Ate my Data

By just using the Azure Management Portal, you don’t get a lot of insight into what is happening inside your instances, which are just Windows VMs. This morning, I noticed something quite scary, and fittingly enough, it’s Halloween. I deleted a deployment after doing a new deployment and VIP swap. But, after a few minutes, the instance still appeared in my Stackify dashboard. I thought this odd, as we monitor these operations and remove devices that have been deleted. Digging in showed that it wasn’t a problem with Stackify. This instance was still there, and still sending data. You’ll notice though that the “Status” check shows that the instance no longer exists. And it gets scarier. I quickly checked the running services, and sure enough, the Windows Azure Guest Agent (which runs worker roles) was still running: “Surely, this can’t be” I’m thinking at this point. Knowing that this worker role is in our QA environment, it has debug logging turned on. And, using our log file tailing feature, I can see that, yes, indeed, this deleted deployment is still executing code. Pulling messages off queues. Sending alerts. Changing data. Fortunately, our tools give me the ability to manually disable the Windows service that runs this code. In the meantime, I have contacted everyone I know (and support) at Microsoft to address this issue. Needless to say, this is concerning. When you delete a deployment, it needs to actually delete. Not continue to eat your data. As soon as I learn more, I’ll be posting an update.

Android Apps Windows Phone is not the only app store that needs a boost.  But unlike Windows Phone, there is a very easy way to get a lot more apps on your Windows PC: BlueStacks.  Right now BlueStacks has 3 things going against it: its UI integration is a desktop app hack, it does not work on RT, and no one know about it.  All three could be fixed if Microsoft bought the company or pulled off the same thing.  The store can be designed to give preference to Windows Store apps but it closes a lot of holes quickly. The Desktop Experience Windows should switch between desktop mode and tablet mode automatically.  Laptops without touch and desktops should work a lot more like Windows 7.  The PC should boot to desktop and Metro apps should run in windows, like MetroMix.  A tablet should boot to the Start Screen by default and pretty much work the same way it does now in 8.1.  Touch laptops should give the user an in your face option on first boot to pick the experience.  And finally, the experience can be changed automatically if the PC is docked or has external monitors hooked up. Death of the Desktop This might seem completely opposite to the last feature, but its not.  I should have no need to ever see the desktop from Start Screen mode.  Every settings needs to be available, an amazing port of the file explorer is needed, and Office Metro must be released.  Desktop apps should also be able to run in full screen mode like other Metro apps.

This can be mocked with RequireJS or passed into the constructor. pass the window.setTimeout function into the method (this could get messy)

• How would I batch rename a lot of files using command-line?

  I have a problem which I am unable to solve: I need to rename a great dump of files using patterns. I tried using this, but I always get an error. I have a folder, inside with a lot of files. Running ls -1 | wc -l, it returns that I have like 160000 files inside. The problem is, that I wish to move these files to a Windows system, but most of them have characters like : and ? in them, which makes the file unaccessible on said Windows-based systems. (As a "do not solve but deal with" method, I tried booting up a LiveCD on the Windows system and moving the files using the live OS. Under that Ubuntu, the files were readable and writable on the mounted NTFS partition, but when I booted back on Windows, it showed that the file is there but Windows was unable to access it in any fashion: rename, delete or open.) I tried running rename 's/\:/_' * inside the folder, but I got Argument list too long error. Some search revealed that it happens because I have so many files, and then I arrived here. The problem is that I don't know how to alter the command to suit my needs, as I always end up having various errors like Trying find -name '*:*' | xargs rename : _, it gives xargs: unmatched single quote; by default quotes are special to xargs unless you use the -0 option [\n] syntax error at (eval 1) line 1, near ":" [\n] xargs: rename: exited with status 255; aborting Adding the -0 after xargs turns the error message to xargs: argument line too long These files are archive files generated by various PHP scripts. The best solution would be having a chance to rename them before they are moved to Windows, but if there is no way to do it, we might have a way to rename the files while they are moved to Windows. I use samba and proftpd to move the files. Unfortunately, graphical software are out of the question as the server containing the files is what it is, a server, with only command-line interface.

• when I type apt-get -f install, I get the error message

• Installation causing broken packages

  Here I come I am so determined to use Ubuntu that I paid a professional to install it for me (dualboot). When I got it I got a lot of things from the software center. Skype did not have a download button so I googled it and Ubuntu help told me to do this: sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner" and then this: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install skype The terminal told me "that this is potentially harmful..." but I thought it was Ubuntu language meaning "are you sure?" Now items cannot be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired, so I want to repair it but the package operation fails. "sudo aptitude -f install" - command not found Synaptic package manager tells me that I have two broken packages, libc6 and libc6-dev but doesn't help, only makes life complicated. What the *#$%&!!! I don't want to be forced to become a computer scientist just to be able to use a free source os. P.s. the sound stopped working
