• Did Acronis True Image Home 2012 clone operation "lock" my BitLocker disk?

  After trying to clone my primary drive, which requires a reboot to proceed, BitLocker detected that the boot sector had changed and required the recovery keys. Not a good situation to be in on Sunday evening when it is your IT-department who hold the keys. After talking with the guys at IT, I have tree suspects on why BitLocker locked me out: The newly added, second hard drive in my machine. The changed boot-order in BIOS. The changes True Image did in order to do its things on boot. As an end-user, I should never have to end up in situations like these without any warning. I would like to know what really happened, so I can inform Acronis on how they can improve their product to avoid this situation in the future.

• capistrano still asks for the 1st password even though I've set up an ssh key???

  Hi, Background: I've setup an ssh key to avoid having to use passwords with capistrano per http://www.picky-ricky.com/2009/01/ssh-keys-with-capistrano.html. A basic ssh to my server does work fine without asking for passwords. I'm using "dreamhost.com" for hosting. Issue - When I run 'cap deploy' I still get asked for the 1st password (even through the previous 2nd and 3rd password requests are now automated). It is the capistrano command that start with "git clone - q ssh:....." for which the password is being requested. Question - Is there something I've missed? How can I get "cap deploy" totally passwordless? Some excerts from config/deploy.rb are: set :use_sudo, false ssh_options[:keys] = [File.join(ENV["HOME"], ".ssh", "id_rsa")] default_run_options[:pty] = true thanks PS. • Sony Vaio dead keyboard

  I have strange problem with my almost new laptop. Aftear I leave it turned on for some hours and back to use it, it was printing something like ^[[2~ on the screen and I cannot stop it. After rebooting it did not show any activity. After few hours I managed to turn it on by hiting random keys at keyboard. I starts that way but I have to use external keyboard to type anything. When I randomly stroke the keys when is turned on, it sometimes print that unrecognised characters. It works the same way at linux and windows (ubuntu, windows 7). What can be the reason it started to work so strange and is there anyway to fix it without sending it to warranty and waiting few weeks? :/ I dont remember to make it wet, but they may be something like cigaretes ashes in it, I could not remember...

  I have mirrored the ubuntu archive repository (I must say it's rather huge). Then, I can apt-get install with no problem, but it prompts with following warning: WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated! xxxx, xxxx, ... Install these packages without verification [y/N]? Well, you can always install it. But, I can't install from the ubuntu software GUI. Which require trusted source. So, 1. How to force the GUI to install untrusted package? 2. Should I configure GPG to receive some public keys? (I've already installed ubuntu-keyring, debian-keyring, but it still untrusted) 3. Should I configure GPG to receive unknown keys from some specific keyservers, automatically?

• Das keyboard boot camp

  So I recently started using a Das keyboard ultimate with my mac and after installing the key re-mapping, it basically works ok. I have a couple of issues with the set up involving boot camp. When I start up the computer, which key maps to option in order to let me pick which operating system to boot into? I think the bios is detecting the keys along the bottom as alt or something like that and I am not sure what to do here. In windows 7, the " and @ keys are switched. How do I get windows to remap this back to the US english settings? Thanks for any help you can provide.

  Hi, We are developing a multi-user desktop application with users located in different countries. The platform is - .net 3.5, SQL Server 2008, WinForms. Now, my client has used the help of a DBA who has implemented merge replication. To facilitate replication, we made all our primary keys as GUID. Now, we are facing these issues with replication - subscribers expiration sometimes stops replication and we have found no clean way to re-add every change to db schema requires to poll the whole data all over again! This seems to be strange, what could be the problem here? Also, sometimes we have duplicate keys, and that too stops replication I am sure these issues can be resolved. Maybe, we have not gone the right way to implement. Can you suggest how to go about implementing. Or, is the above information enough to diagnose the problem?

  I have been googeling for days! I have a cert from rapidssl. I read up that the problem with num=20, is that indicates it doesn't know the issuer, or doesn't know the ROOT Cert, right? I run this command: openssl s_client -showcerts -connect smtp.server.com:465 I get this error: verify error:num=19:self signed certificate in certificate chain Here is what i have in my postfix main.cf, and what i have done: smtpd_tls_key_file = /etc/postfix/ssl/smtp.server.com.rsa.key (this is the private key) smtpd_tls_cert_file = /etc/postfix/ssl/smtp.server.com.PUBLIC.key (this is the public key given to me by rapidssl) smtpd_tls_CAfile = /etc/postfix/ssl/combo.csr.key This key has both the intermediate keys ON TOP, and the ROOT KEY on the bottom.   Setup The public keys are set up on a Macbook. I can do a passwordless push to github and a server (iMac) on the local network. The Problem I know the keys are partially setup correctly, because I everything works if I'm sitting at the Macbook. What doesn't work is when I SSH into the Macbook remotely and attempt to push to github or to the iMac server. I'm prompted to input my SSH key passphrase. What am I missing to enable pushing to github from the Macbook while logged in remotely from the iMac?

  Just got a new Mac Pro at work and as I can't stand the ZX Spectrum-esque 'dead flies' feel of the new Apple keyboards, I brought my trusty IBM SpaceSaver II to the office (with a USB/PS2 adapter) All seems generally to work ok - even the Trackpoint 'nipple' but periodically the modifier keys, notably the Ctrl and Windows keys seem to go into 'sticky' mode so that typing an 'S' brings up the save dialog, 'O' = open dialog etc. etc. Its generally fixed by switching windows and then returning back to the offending one, but this is really beginning to cheese me off. Can anyone suggest a fix?

  Today on hacker news there was a clever article on custom shortcut keys. The author talks about a technique for remapping a modifier key such as CTRL to ESC if CTRL were pressed without a modifier. This is useful in vim because of how often you need to press ESC. Another technique he describes is mapping the open parenthesis, ( to the left shift key, and ) to the right shift key. If another key is pressed when shift is held down, the shift key behaves normally. The author describes the software he uses on OSX, but is there a way to do this on Windows? I've heard of AutoHotKey but it seems to only fire macros when simple keys are pressed, rather than the conditional state switch that this would require.

• DDNS Not Creating Journal (Dhcpd and Named)

Boom! Works. Despite documentation stating the files are created automatically and what I have seen before... dunno why but that did the trick. Also re-checked perms on the dir the files live in. As certain as I was, they were correct with named having rw. CentOS 6 (final) dhcpd 4.1.1-P1 named BIND 9.8.2rc1-RedHat-9.8.2-0.10.rc1.el6 Basic DHCP and DNS functionality are in place on 192.168.111.2. Clients are assigned addresses as intended and can resolve local DNS names as well as Internet names. My problem is that named's zone journal files are not created. chroot: /var/named/chroot I tried placing the zone files in various directories (/var/named/data, /var/named, /var/named/dynamic - no matter which dir with named owning and wide open perms I now get nowhere). Along the way I, at one point, got a permission denied when named tried to create the journal. Resolved the issue by: chown --recursive named:named /var/named chmod --recursive 777 /var/named The journal was then created and here's where things fell apart. I attempted to tame permissions to something more sane and broke it. Once changed and having restarted named it threw an error indicating the journal was out of sync (or something to that affect)... didn't matter since this is a new setup so I deleted it and now it is not recreated. Now though I see no errors in /var/log/messages, my chrooted /var/log/named.log, or chrooted /var/log/named.debug. I increased the debug level with 'rndc trace' - no love. Increased trace to 10, still nothing. SELinux is disabled... • Visual Studio 2010 haunted keyboard

  It seems the haunted keyboard is back in VS2010 ... after working on a web application for a short while I find that some keys just don't work, or are behaving like certain keys are stuck. This is only in VS, and I am definitely not triggering any keyboard changes in VS or Windows (I have disabled that in Windows) and I have reset my environment settings several times. Aargh! This is so frustrating ... anyone else getting this problem? Is there a solution?

  I recently took my WSUS server offline. In the mean time I want the clients to update from the internet until I get WSUS up again. However, Windows Updates is tring to contact the old server and (obviously) failing to get new updates. I have updated the WSUS GPO to disabled. Checked DNS is resolving. Deleted WSUS GPOs. GPRESULT reports that policy is not being applied Run GPUPDATE /force No issues reported from DCDIAG I delete the registry keys HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate But the keys return after a reboot. What else can I try ?

• VMWare and ALT GR key results in missing characters

  For some odd reason WMware products hijack the AltGy-key despite I make sure that other keys are used as hot keys to release mouse and keyboard from the virtual machine. While this is not a problem for US keyboards, european however who extensively use AltGR for characters such as pipe (|), at-sign (@), left brace ({) and right brace (}). This seem to happen both in Windows and Linux and I can not seem to find a solution that works for both. :( Anyone have an idea how to fix this without the need to modify the guest OS every time?   i am still have troubles mastering sshd - when I login with -v I see that ssh is authenticating the following way debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,gssapi-with-mic,password,hostbased I would like to change the order ... any idea how ? My bigger problem is that user with locked accounts, can still login via public-keys. I have found that I could add the user to a group "ssh-locked" add deny that group from sshing, but I am still wondering if there is a way to tell ssh'd : Please check password before keys ... • How to swap ctrl and fn key on a MacBook Pro running Windows 7 via Boot Camp?

  There are sooooo many discussion on the internet about swapping the fn and ctrl key on a MacBook Pro. On the Mac side, a new software called ReMap4MacBook does a perfect job swapping the two key. But on the PC side (specifically Windows 7), I can't really find a definitive answer. Most post refer to this article but I read the loooong article and followed the instructions to no avail. I remember there used to be a program (maybe it was on XP) that not only swapped the two keys but it also controlled the fans on the MacBook Pro. But I can't remember the name and I also recall that that program stopped being updated like years ago. EDIT: It's called Input Remapper. So I am hoping there exist a simple program that I can simply run to swap those two keys.

  Hi all, Just wondering if someone can assist me further with the set-up of OpenVPN on my Windows Server 2003. I have configured Win Server as per the following guide: http://tinyurl.com/kxusv and I'm now at the stage of Creating the config files. I have a few questions that I need some assistance with. My server IP is 192.168.1.10 and my routers IP address is 192.168.1.1 (the router is a Netgear DGN2000). I have edited the server.ovpn file as per the following: push "dhcp-option DNS X.X.X.X" # Replace the Xs with the IP address of the DNS for your home network (usually your ISP's DNS) push "dhcp-option DNS X.X.X.X" # A second DNS server if you have one to include my ISP DNS and I have not edited anything else. Now my issue is with the client1.opvpn file as per the below: client dev tap #dev-node MyTAP #If you renamed your TAP interface or have more than one TAP interface then remove the # at the beginning and change "MyTAP" to its name proto udp remote YOURHOST.dyndns.org 1194 #You will need to enter you dyndns account or static IP address here. The number following it is the port you set in the server's config route 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 vpn_gateway 3 #This it the IP address scheme and subnet of your normal network your server is on. The final part that I'm stuggling with is Configuring the router. Basically I have a Netgear DGN2000 and as it mentions that the router should be configured to port forward port 1194 to the server’s IP address of 192.168.1.150 all I have been able to do is in 'Firewall Rules' and on 'Inbound Services', set the Service to 'Any(ALL) and Send to LAN Server point to 1923.168.1.150. I'm not sure if this is correct? It is the following stage of the help guide that I'm struggling with and really need some help with: You need to make sure the port you configured OpenVPN to listen on is forwarded on the router to the IP address of your server. On the WRT54G, port forwarding is configured in the “Applications & Gaming” section. Enter 1194 for the port, UDP for the protocol, and 192.168.1.150 for the IP address. Make sure the entry is enabled and then save the setting. Next, you need to add an entry to the router’s Routing Table. This will enable the router to properly route requests from the clients to the TAP interface of the server. On the WRT54G you would go to the “Setup” page and then the “Advanced Routing” section. Enter the follwing info to make the entry: Enter Route Name: openVPN Destination LAN IP: 192.168.10.0 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.252 Default Gateway: 192.168.1.150 Interface: LAN & Wireless Once the info has been typed in make sure you save the setting. Can anyone possibly guide me through setting this part up with my Netgear router. I see that once I have these 2 parts complete I'm there so I would really appreciate someone walking me through what is required in completing this. Much appreciated.

• What does a WinForm application need to be designed for usability, and be robust, clean, and profess

  One of the principal problems impeding productivity in software implementation is the classic conundrum of “reinventing the wheel”. Of late I am a .NET developer and even the wonderful wizardry of .NET and Visual Studio covers only a portion of this challenging issue. Below I present my initial thoughts both on what is available and what should be available from .NET on a WinForm, focusing on good usability. That is, aspects of an application exposed to the user and making the user experience easier and/or better. (I do include a couple items not visible to the user because I feel strongly about them, such as diagnostics.) I invite you to contribute to these lists. LIST A: Components provided by .NET These are substantially complete components provided by .NET, i.e. those requiring at most trivial coding to use. “About” dialog -- add it with a couple clicks then customize. Persist settings across invocations -- .NET has the support; just use a few lines of code to glue them together. Migrate settings with a new version -- a powerful one, available with one line of code. Tooltips (and infotips) -- .NET includes just plain text tooltips; third-party libraries provide richer ones. Diagnostic support -- TraceSources, TraceListeners, and more are built-in. Internationalization -- support for tailoring your app to languages other than your own. LIST B: Components not provided by .NET These are not supplied at all by .NET or supplied only as rudimentary elements requiring substantial work to be realized. Splash screen -- a small window present during program startup with your logo, loading messages, etc. Tip of the day -- a mini-tutorial presented one bit at a time each time the user starts your app. Check for available updates -- facility to query a server to see if the user is running the latest version of your app, then provide a simple way to upgrade if a new version is found. Maximize to multiple monitors -- the canonical window allows you to maximize to a single monitor only; in my apps I allow maximizing across multiple monitors with a click. Taskbar notifier -- flash the taskbar when your backgrounded app has new info for the user. Options dialogs -- multi-page dialogs letting the user customize the app settings to his/her own preferences. Progress indicator -- for long running operations give the user feedback on how far there is left to go. Memory gauge -- an indicator (either absolute or percentage) of how much memory is used by your app. LIST C: Stylistic and/or tiny bits of functionality This list includes bits of functionality that are too tiny to merit being called a component, along with stylistic concerns (that admittedly do overlap with the Windows User Experience Interaction Guidelines). Design a form for resizing -- unless you are restricting your form to be a fixed size, use anchors and docking so that it does what is reasonable when enlarged or shrunk by the user. Set tab order on a form -- repeated tab presses by the user should advance from field to field in a logical order rather than the default order in which you added fields. Adjust controls to be aware of operating modes -- When starting a background operation with, for example, a “Go” button, disable that “Go” button until the operation completes. Provide access keys for all menu items (per UXGuide). Provide shortcut keys for commonly used menu items (per UXGuide). Set up some (global or important or common) shortcut keys without associating to menu items. Allow some menu items to be invoked with or without modifier keys (shift, control, alt) where the modifier key is useful to vary the operation slightly. Hook up Escape and Enter on child forms to do what is reasonable. Decorate any library classes with documentation-comments and attributes -- this allows Visual Studio to leverage them for Intellisense and property descriptions. Spell check your code! What else would you include?

• How to display SSH banner at login, but only for password authentication

  I have a warning message that is displayed to a user after they enter their username to log in to our Linux servers. I only want to display this message for password authentications, and not when keys are used. It should only show to a user who is logging into a host, and not when they are sshing from one host to another (our hosts all have keys set up so we can ssh from one to another without entering passwords). Currently, I have a line for Banner in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file which points to a text file containing the warning message. Banner doesn't appear to have any further config options, so I'm wondering if there is a way to do this with pam or some other mechanism? Thanks.

• Overriding RPM public key database

  Can rpm be persuaded to import and fetch public keys from an arbitrary pubkey database? On the same build machine I've got two automated users who each need to verify package signatures from different sources, signed under different keys. If I rpm --import pkg-source1.pub pkg-source2.pub, each user will be able to verify packages intended for the other. I'd rather each user not know about the other's public keyring. Is there a way I can specify an alternate or supplementary pubkey database on a per-user or per-rpm(8)-invocation basis?

• Encrypt temporary password using public ssh key

  I manage a virtual office and our staff uses both SSH keys and passwords for authentication. If one of our staff forgets his password, is there a way to encrypt a temporary password using his public RSA ssh key so I can send it to him via e-mail? I've seen other questions related to this one, however the "answers" generally recommend against using the public/private SSH keys to perform general encryption/decryption and do not actually state if this is possible. I would like to know if it is indeed possible and what are the steps to encrypt and then decrypt the password.

• Logitech MX3200 keyboard stopped working

  I have a Logitech MX3200 wireless keyboard and mouse set, and keyboard stopped working. I was working with it and it just stopped in the middle of using it. Some notes: The mouse still works flawlessly, i've tried to reconnect the KB i've tried to reconnect everything, mouse reconnects, keyboard reconnects (or pretends to) I've tried to hard reset (holding the connect button on the receiver for 10 seconds). I've tried new batteries I took out the batteries out of the KB & Mouse and unplugged the receiver over night. The media keys still work (launches winamp) but they main keys does not At this point, i've tried everything I've seen online. I just want to know is my keyboard dead in the water? I would say it's been about 8 months to a year since i've bought it, and the articles i find on the internet all say that's as long as they last... is this true? what's everyone's experience? I hope it's not true.
