• How to add a font to the Cmd window choices in Windows 7 64-bit?

  I tried following the procedure outlined in this previous answer and it doesn't work: http://superuser.com/a/5079/2366 Specifically I'm trying to add Lucida Sans Typewriter Regular to the choices of Consolas and Lucida Console that the Cmd window currently allows. Lucida Console is in registry key "0" and Consolas is in registry key "00", so I'm adding key "000" but it's not affecting the available choices in the Font tab under Properties, even after rebooting the system. P.S. I also tried adding Courier New to the choices and it shows up, but appears to select Italic instead.

• How to repair a Veritas tape that has been overwritten a bit?

  I meant to restore some files, but I forgot that there was a monday backup job just waiting for tape loading. So veritas 10d started to write over my tape and that valuable data is now gone. The original data size was about 40 GB and that accidentally started job wrote about 30 MB to the begin of tape. What are my possibilities to recover some data from that tape? Update: Inventory and catalog doesn't help, media settings are overwrite, not append. It is a DLT drive.

• Vista 32-Bit Home Premium will not let me install any updates.

  Windows update says that it could not search for new updates and gives the error code 80070643. From what I have read it has something to do with Office 2003 and I dont even have it installed. I tried downloading and installing vista sp2 but it fails as well giving me error: ERROR_EVT_CONFIGURATION_ERROR(0x89973aa2). Can someone please help me resolve this issue?

• Is putting swapfile & temp folder in ramdisk a good idea in Windows 7 64 bit with lots of ram?

  I want my Windows to run as fast as possible. If I have 12GB ram in Windows 7 64bit, quad core cpu, and all apps fit in memory, will the swap file ever be used for anything? The question is about if its a good idea to put the swap file in a ram disk. Would a ram disk help in any way or will Windows intelligently use all the available memory for all its work? I am also thinking of putting the temp folder in a ram disk. I know ram disk is volatile memory and I don't care about its content in it if it gets lost.

• How can one create a bootable linux usb key that works on Mac (Intel 64 bit CPU) hardware ?

  Hi, I'm trying to create a bootable usb key with linux (debian) and that can be booted on Macintel hardware. I have read that MAC's EFI can only boot GPT GUID formatted disks. I'm desperately trying to find a good tutorial which explains how to create such a key. Here what I have done so far: create a GUID partition on te key using linux GNU parted create a HFS+ or ext3 partition on the key, with the boot flag on install a linux .iso with unetbootin While all steps were successfull and in some cases I could even boot on a PC, the step of booting on Macintel software failed (on a macbook). I need to precise that I holded the "alt" key while booting the mac and the only visible bootable disk was the hard disk. Thanks for any advice. PS: I have tried with rEFIt as well. In one case I had a "windows" icon but it then failed to boot with a message like "no system found"

This is happening for me for all projects that I create whether they are WPF/Win Forms/VB.NET/C#/.NET 4/.NET 3. Any ideas?

• Why does my 64-bit IIS app pool show 3 gigabytes more virtual memory than private memory?

  I have an ASP.Net application that I am running on 64-bit IIS 6 on Windows XP x64. When I open performance counters after one page hit of a trivial page, I see a Private Bytes of about 88 megs, but a Virtual Bytes of about 3 Gigs. When I try the same thing with a VERY trivial ASP.Net app, I get the same result. We see something similar on Windows Server 2003 in production -- there it is an issue because we recycle when the virtual memory consumed outgrows a limit. Before we make any changes to our recycling settings, we'd like to answer the following questions: Why does the app pool grab such a large hunk of virtual memory? Is the amount of virtual memory headroom the app requests configurable? Thanks! Brett

  How can I check if two System.Drawing.Color structures represent the same color in 16 bit color depth (or generally based on the value of Screen.PrimaryScreen.BitsPerPixel)? Let's say I set Form.TransparencyKey to Value1 (of Color type), I want to check that when the user selects a new background color for the form (Value2), I don't set the entire form transparent. On 32bit color depth screens I simply compare the two values: if (Value1 == Value2) However, this does not work on 16bit color depth screens, as more Color values for the Value2 would represent the same actual 16bit color as Value1, as I found out the hard way.

• "Look" of page changes a bit after uploading it to IIS - looks good on computer same IE8

  No it's not a path issue...or else the site won't have a design. The website looks fine if I open it with IE8 in my computer. But after I upload it to IIS 6.0 two things change on positioning. I see a rendering problem. But if I open it with IE 8.0 on my machine it looks good, but opening it when uploaded to IIS , it changes a bit. Same exact files. Same browser, same computer. The only different thing is that it has been uploaded to IIS. IT has no programming in aspx whatsoever just .html .css and .js

  Is there a standard way to do this? Googling -- "approximate entropy" bits -- uncovers multiple academic papers but I'd like to just find a chunk of pseudocode defining the approximate entropy for a given bit string of arbitrary length. (In case this is easier said than done and it depends on the application, my application involves 16,320 bits of encrypted data (cyphertext). But encrypted as a puzzle and not meant to be impossible to crack. I thought I'd first check the entropy but couldn't easily find a good definition of such. So it seemed like a question that ought to be on StackOverflow! Ideas for where to begin with de-cyphering 16k random-seeming bits are also welcome...) • Is adding a bit mask to all tables in a database useful?

  A colleague is adding a bit mask to all our database tables. In theory this is so we can track certain properties of each row across the entire system. For example... Is the row shipped with the system or added by the client once they've started using the system Has the row been deleted from the table (soft deletes) Is the row a default value within a set of rows Is this a good idea? Are there other uses where this approach would be beneficial? My preference is these properties are obviously important, and having a dedicated column for each property is justified to make what is happening clearer to fellow developers.

Truly if you type nyti.ms on your URL bar on the browser it takes you to www.nytimes.com, but still what is so hard in typing "nytimes.com! which is far much comprehensible to read and understand leave alone to remember! Does shortening URL serve any purpose in web development? Why should someone want use obscure shortened URL?

  I've begun watching a series of first year lectures from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia, and I'm a bit perplexed by the instructors explanation of how an SRAM gate works. I realize this isn't exactly "programming-related" but since it comes from a series of lectures relating to computing and programming, I thought StackOverflow may be able to help (reddit failed me entirely). In this lecture beginning at around 32:12, Richard (the lecturer) tries to explain how a "latch gate" works within SRAM. Although his students seem to keep up, I feel I'm missing something crucial which is preventing the concept from really "clicking" in my brain.   I've just installed the latest production release of MySQL (64-bit) on my Windows 7 box. It was a straight vanilla install, using all defaults; but phpmyadmin can't see it at all. MySQL is configured as a service to start automatically, and I know it's running because the MySQL GUI tools work correctly. Doing a netstat -a, I see TCP 0.0.0.0:3306 Marks-Netbook:0 LISTENING when I'd expect to see TCP 127.0.0.1:3306 Marks-Netbook:0 LISTENING I don't know if this is the reason phpmyadmin can't connect, but suspect that it is probably the case. Can anybody confirm whether this is the likely cause, and/or suggest how I can reso;lve this?

  Hi I am using Linq2Sql and want to bind an objects field (which is enum) to either a bit or a int type in the database. For example I want have a gender field in my model. I have already edited the DBML and changed the Type to point to my enum. I want to create Radio buttons (which I think I have figured out) for gender and dropdown lists for other areas using the same idea. My enum looks like this public enum Gender { Male, Female } Mapping between DbType 'int' and Type 'Project.Models.Gender' in Column 'Gender' of Type 'Candidate' is not supported. Any ideas on how to do this mapping. Am I missing something on the enums.

• Converting a 16 bit tiff file to something viewable online?

  I need to take a 16 bit .tiff file and make it viewable on my website. To even view .tiff files many browsers require plugins. I found a software that could convert them to .jpg files but I was wondering if there is a way to do this independently. I am making my website using Ruby on Rails. I must be able to do the conversion from the website because the whole point of the website is to upload large folders of .tiff files and display them in an online slideshow. • Best memory settings for eclipse 4.2 (STS 3.1) on Windows 7 64 bit?

  I apoligize in advance if this question is indeed too subjective as SO warns me. My workstation has 8 gb of ram and runs windows 7 64 bit. I use the Spring tool Suite (3.1) but as soon as i am starting to open and modify the spring config (.xml) files, STS becomes incredibly slow. I already tried switching off "build automatically" and to increase memory settings but no luck.   I'm attempting to call LinkedIn's API and store Network Updates. Each update has a Unix timestamp that I'm retrieving as a string variable from the REST XML response. I want to convert the string timestamp to a mysql datetime format. The date() function accepts an integer as the second argument for time to be converted. However, I'm on Windows 32 bit PHP and the integer type for this platform is limited to 2147483647. $timestamp = '1293714626675'; // sample pulled from linkedin $timestamp = (int) $timestamp; // timestamp now equals 2147483647 $mysqlDatetime = date('Y-m-d H:i:s', $timestamp); // produces incorrect time Is there a better method of creating the mysql datetime in PHP? I realize that I can convert it upon insert into MySQL however, that would require changing other dependent code.

• Not enough free disk space

  I'm new to Ubuntu and I'm getting an error in software updater. When I try and do my daily updates, it says: The upgrade needs a total of 25.3 M free space on disk /boot. Please free at least an additional 25.3 M of disk space on /boot. Empty your trash and remove temporary packages of former installations using sudo apt-get clean. I tried typing in sudo apt-get clean into the terminal but I still get the message. All of the pages I read seem to be for experianced Ubuntuers. Any help would be appreciated. I'm running Ubuntu 12.10. I want to upgrade to 13.04 but understand I have to finish these first.   Hi All, I have tried to install a 32 bit Netegrity(CA) siteminder web agent on 64 bit Windows server 2003. The IIS server is V 6.0 and so it is also 64 bit. But the problem is while configuring the agent it is showing metabase error. Previously 64 bit web agent was installed on the same server and removed. The IIS V 6.0 is also reinstalled on the server. But after that when I tried to install 32 bit siteminder web agent, it is showing an error as said above. Is it possible to install a 32 bit siteminder web agent on 64 bit IIS? • Refernce platform specific System.Data.SQLite

  Hi, I am using SQLite for the unit testing and might use it as a database for local development/staging. The System.Data.SQLite has basically 2 versions: x86 and x64. Correct one should be used for the specific platform. I have 64 bit Win7, other guys in the team might use 32-bit OSs. The server's platform is not known at this stage. If I use 32-bit version of the assembly on 64-bit platform I get BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Data.SQLite'. I believe similar will happen trying to use 64-bit assembly on 32-bit platform. So my question is what is the best way to reference the SQLite assembly so that it does not depend on the platform and people can just use it? It is ok to use 32-bit version of assembly on a 64-bit platform (Maybe there is a switch for that somewhere?). Thanks, Dmitriy.

• IIS 7.5 refuses to load 64-bit assembly - possible CAS problem?

  Hi, I just downloaded the Orchard CMS, opened it up in VS2008 and hit F5: Everything runs fine. I then created a website in IIS 7.5 and pointed it to the web project's directory and set up permissions correctly (I hope). I downloaded the 64-bit version System.Data.SQLite as suggested here: Orchard Work Item 14798 and here: SO: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Data.SQLite'. The site runs in Full Trust. When I point my browser to the site running through IIS I get Could not load file or assembly 'System.Data.SQLite, Version=1.0.65.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=db937bc2d44ff139' or one of its dependencies. Failed to grant minimum permission requests. I don't know much about Code Access Security (if that is even what's at play here), so I am at a loss here. What am I doing wrong / not understanding / not seeing? How do I provide appropriate permissions and to whom / what? Is there any hope of ever deploying this application to a hoster where I am only allowed to run in Medium Trust? Any help, pointers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. NOTE: the question is not why this initially worked when run through Cassini. The answer to that question is contained in the answer to the SO question referenced above.
