• Instant MSI deployment via GPO

  Is it possible to instantly deploy a certain piece of software by creating a GPO in Active Directory? I realize it's possible to do this but only after rebooting the computer, and that is something we don't always want to do, especially since some of the software I want to deploy on servers. What are the options? One thing to note is that most of our users do NOT have admin rights as I am talking not only about servers but also about workstations in the classrooms.

• iSCSI Disconnects every 30 minutes

  Every 30 minutes, almost by clockwork, a get the following error on my Windows 2008 R2 servers: Log Name: System Source: MSiSCSI Event ID: 113 Level: Warning Description: iSCSI discovery via SendTargets failed with error code 0xefff0003 to target portal *10.2.62.3 0003260 B06BDRV\L4SC&PCI_163A14E4&SUBSYS_045F1028&REV_20\5&cabe3b7&0&30050200_0 I have 12 identically built servers connected to this iSCSI network and they are all seeing this issue. I've updated drivers and firmware levels without any change. Any other obvious things I should try before engaging my network team and the vendors.

• ssh authentication with public-private key pair

  Hi! I'm wonder if is possible to authenticate the same user with different public-private keys pairs on the same remote host. For all production servers, the public-private key pair has been generated for the same user and then exported to the backup server for allowing ssh authentication without human intervention. • What is the proper position for the loopback address in a DNS server selection list?

  Best practices indicate that one should list 127.0.0.1 in the DNS list for the network adapter configuration for a Domain Controller, but not as the first one. With that said, what is the best place to put it in a list with more than two DNS servers listed? Second, last, or it doesn't matter? Also helpful would be an explanation as to why. • Daemon process exiting when shell closes

  I have a script which starts a daemon process and then sleeps for 20 seconds. If I run the script on SLES11 SP1 or RHEL6 then after the script exits the process is still running. If I run the script on SLES11 SP3 or RHEL6.3 then after the script exits the process is no longer running. The process continues to run for the entire 20 second sleep and is killed when the process exits. The script is run via expect so the script's entire shell exits with the process. Obviously if this wasn't a daemon it was starting I wouldn't be surprised. Also, I suspect the problem isn't the OS version as much as it is the difference in the way we've setup the newer servers (no idea what those differences are though, the older servers were set up years ago). During the 20 seconds the process runs if I do a ps I get the following: root 4699 1 0 15:14 pts/2 00:00:00 sudo -u openmq /opt/PacketPortal/openmq/default/bin/imqbrokerd -bgnd -autorestart -silent -port 7676 -Dimq.service.activelist=admin,ssljms -D openmq 4701 4699 0 15:14 pts/2 00:00:00 /bin/sh /opt/PacketPortal/openmq/default/bin/imqbrokerd -bgnd -autorestart -silent -port 7676 -Dimq.service.activelist=admin,ssljms -Dimq.ssl The fact that the parent process of 4699 is 1 seems to suggest to me that the process has been correctly daemonized. However, after the expect script exits both 4699 and 4701 are killed. What could be causing this? UPDATE I've printed the same output on the servers that work. I wonder why it doesn't do that on the newer servers. UPDATE Here is the section of the script that actually launches OpenMQ. • Using OpenNMS, how can I disable notifications for a particular service and server

  We are using OpenNMS to monitor a pool of servers, and we have a problem with SMTP in one particular box. OpenNMS is "spamming" us all the time with DOWN/RESOLVED messages for that particular service in that server, and I wanted to mute those notifications momentarely but couldn't find how to do that. I know that I can disable ALL notifications or disable SMTP in ALL servers, but that's not what I want. I'm used to muting a particular service in Nagios, but is it possible in OpenNMS?

• Spiceworks SQL Monitor cant authenticate

  I have SpiceWorks 4.7, installed and added the sql monitor extension to monitor our SQL servers. It does identify our sql servers correctly, but when I put the login information in it can't authenticate, with the following error message. Authentication failed. Check the login and password, and ensure that the server is configured for remote connections. I get the same result trying to use windows authentication. WE do use an alternate port# could this be the problem?

  Now that self-healing cloud servers are becoming more and more popular, I am currently torn between the decision if I should setup a HAproxy failover for my VPS or if should save myself the trouble and just put my sites on a self-healing cloud server. Does it still make sense to setup your own failover system (HAproxy + 2 or more servers for example) when self healing cloud seems like a practical solution? They seem to do the same job or am I missing something?

• Kernel-mode Authentication: 401 errors when accessing site from remote machines

  I have several Classic ASP sites that use Integrated Windows Authentication and Kerberos delegation. They work OK on the live servers (recently moved to a Server 2008/IIS7 servers), but do not work fully on my development PC or my development server. The IIS on both machines were configured through an IIS web deployment tool package which was exported from an old machine; the deployment didn't work perfectly, and I had to tinker a bit to get the sites working. When accessing the apps locally on either machine, they work fine; when accessing from another machine, the user is prompted by a username/password dialog, and regardless of what you enter, ultimately it results in a 401 (Unauthorised) error. I've tried comparing the configuration of these machines against similar live servers (that all work fine), and they seem generally comparable (given that none of the live servers are yet on IIS7.5 (Windows 7/Server 2008 R2). These applications run in a common application pool which uses a special domain user as it's identity - this user has similar permissions on the live and development machines. On IIS6 platforms, to enable kerberos delegation, I needed to set up some SPNs for this user, and they are still in place (even though I don't believe they are needed any longer for IIS7+ due to kernel-mode authentication), Furthermore, this account is enabled for Kerberos delegation in Active Directory, as is each machine I am dealing with. I'm considering the possibility that the deployment might have made changes/failed to make changes to the IIS configuration thus causing this problem. Perhaps a complete rebuild (minus another web deployment attempt) would solve the problem, but I'd rather fix (thus understand) the current problem. Any ideas so far? I've just had another attempt at fixing this issue, and I've made some progress, but I don't have a complete fix...yet. I've discovered that if I access the sites via IP address (than via NetBIOS name), I get the same dialog, except that it accepts my credentials and thus the application works - not quite a fix, but a useful step. More interestingly, I discovered that if I disable Kernel-mode authentication (in IIS Manager Website Authentication Advanced Settings), the applications work perfectly. My foggy understanding is that this is effectively working in the pre-IIS7 way. A reasonable short-term solution, but consider the following explicit advice from IIS on this issue: By default, IIS enables kernel-mode authentication, which may improve authentication performance and prevent authentication problems with application pools configured to use a custom identity. As a best practice, do not disable this setting if Kerberos authentication is used in your environment and the application pool is configured to use a custom identity. Clearly, this is not the way my applications should be working. So what is the issue?

• SSH tunneling hangs with many connections

  I am forced to use SSH tunneling to access many servers (over 100) via one gateway server. To keep connection alive I am using autossh. Everything works pretty well until there is high traffic (people are connecting to most of the servers at once). then ssh process reaches 12% of cpu (which is configured maximum for separate process) and no connection is working anymore - i have to restart autossh script. What could be the possible reason for that?

• Configure host access rights in OpenLDAP

  I've set up an OpenLDAP-Server to authenticate users to our Ubuntu-servers. The authentication works quite well but I'd like to restict the user's access to certain servers. I know this can be done through nss_base_something in the client's ldap.conf. However, this requires the group restrictions to be specified on the client. I wonder if the restrictions can be set completely in OpenLDAP. If it is, I'd like to know how. Thanks, AC

• How to Setup Ubuntu Mail Server with Google Apps?

  I have a domain, let's call it foobar.com. All of the MX records for foobar.com point to Google's mail servers because I am using Google Apps for your domain to manage it. It's great because everyone gets all the advantages of GMail, but our e-mail addresses aren't @gmail.com. I also have a server. Primarily, it's a web server, but it also serves other things. One of the things it serves is the web site for foobar.com and also sites for various virtual hosts such as shop.foobar.com and forum.foobar.com. The server is running Ubuntu 8.04, because I like using LTS releases in production. The thing is, there are various applications running on the server that need the ability to send out emails. Various applications, like the cron jobs, send me e-mails in case of errors. Some of the web applications need to send e-mail to users when they forget their passwords, to confirm new registered users, etc. Lastly, it's nice to be able to send e-mail from the command line using the mail command, or mutt. How can I setup the mail on the web server to go through the Google apps mail servers? I don't need the web server to receive mail, though that would be cool. I do need it to be able to send mail as any legitimate address @foobar.com. That way the forum application can send mails with [email protected] in the from field, and the ecommerce application will have [email protected] in the from field. Also, by sending the mail through the Google servers, we can avoid a lot of the problems with the e-mails being blocked by various spam filters on the web. Google's SMTP servers are trusted a lot more than mine would be. I'm pretty good with administering Linux systems, but I am absolutely brain dead when it comes to e-mail. I need step by step directions from beginning to end on how to set this up. I need to know every thing to install, and every single change to the configuration files that is necessary. I have tried following various howtos and guides in the past, but none of them were quite right. Either they didn't work at all, or they offered a configuration that is not what I wanted. • enable vnc on xen without having to shut down all the domains

  The last guy forgot to enable vnc connections on our Xen blade and I need to install a windows domain, is there any way I can enable vnc without shutting down half our company? From what I can tell I need to edit xend-config.sxp which would likely require a restart of xend, which means shutting down all the running domains. Is there any way around this? thanks :)

So in laymans terms, how much RAM does a web-page user take on average? For example, how many concurrent visitors can I have on my server, running an Apache server, with 512mb RAM?

When I add this policy to the Terminal Servers user group it has no effect. I exported this key from my own registry after unticking the box. My computer runs Windows Vista Business Edition. All the examples I found were only for backing up FROM remote servers to local machine, but not for backing up TO remote servers.
