  • Chapter 3: Data-Tier Applications

With the release of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, the SQL Server Manageability team addressed these struggles by introducing support for data-tier applications to help streamline the deployment, management, and upgrade of database applications. A data tier application, also referred to as a DAC, is a single unit of deployment that contains all the elements used by an application, such as the database application schema, instance level objects, associated database objects, files and scripts, and even a manifest defining the organization’s deployment requirements.

  • Why the SQL Server FORCESCAN hint exists

It is often generalized that seeks are better than scans in terms of retrieving data from SQL Server. The index hint FORCESCAN was recently introduced so that you could coerce the optimizer to perform a scan instead of a seek. Which might lead you to wonder: Why would I ever want a scan instead of a seek? 12 must-have SQL Server toolsThe award-winning SQL Developer Bundle contains 10 tools for faster, simpler SQL Server development. • How to pronounce "std" as in "std::vector"

    - by Lex Fridman
In C++, the STL (standard template library) includes a namespace std that contains the many data structures and algorithms that we all know and love. I've always pronounced this namespace just like sexually transmitted diseases: S T D. But then I listened to this excellent series of lectures by Stephan T. Lavavej and he pronounces it "stood". Which is the "correct" pronunciation or at least what is that most commonly used one?

  • Drag and Drop-How to get the url's title?, Name? Description? (2 replies)

I made a .Hta file that contains some drag and drop (primitive coding, alas). (see full .hta code at bottom of this posting) The .hta returns the url of links that are dragged and dropped onto it. But there's info it doesn't return that I need, and I don't know the right term to describe what I need that I'm not getting. To explain by example, if I open a window to this url: http://dotcommunities....

  • Using macro to check null values [migrated]

    - by poliron
My C code contains many functions with pointers to different structs as parameteres which shouldn't be NULL pointers. To make my code more readable, I decided to replace this code: if(arg1==NULL || arg2==NULL || arg3==NULL...) { return SOME_ERROR; } With that macro: NULL_CHECK(arg1,arg2,...) How should I write it, if the number of args is unknown and they can point to different structs?(I work in C99)

  • Greenspun's Tenth Rule, does every large project include a Lisp interpreter?

    - by casualcoder
Greenspun's tenth rule (actually the only rule) states that: Any sufficiently complicated C or Fortran program contains an ad hoc, informally-specified, bug-ridden, slow implementation of half of Common Lisp. My memory is that there are some papers on the topic, perhaps for Borland's Quattro (spreadsheet) project and possibly others. Google is unhelpful, maybe the right search terms are not coming to mind. I am looking for papers or articles supporting this claim, if any.

  • How to run sunspots?

    - by user111317
I am trying to use SUN Spots with Ubuntu, but for some reason the SUN Spot Manager app is not seeing connected spot on USB port. Possibility that cdc_acm driver is not installed has been mentioned elsewhere, but I am complete beginner when it comes to Ubuntu, so I don't know where to find it or how to install it. Any input on this matter would be more than welcome. Addition: ls /dev/tty* returned the list that contains /dev/ttyACM0, but SUN spot is still not recognizing it.
