    In a web server project with a rich domain model (application logic is in the model, not in the services) how do you handle injecting the dependencies into the model objects? What are your experiences? Do you use some form of AOP? Like Springs @Configurable annotation? Load time or build time weawing? Problems you encountered? Do you use manual injection? Then how do you handle different instantiation scenarios (creating of the objects through an library [like Hibernate], creating objects with "new" ...)? Or do you use some other way of injecting the dependencies?

  • Which Java Web Framework allows Cross-Domain Javascripting (http proxy) ?

    So just a quick intro, I am starting to explore Vaadin, and it's absolutely perfect. Previously, I was juggling PHP, Perl, Ruby, and Jquery for designing rich client web application. It didn't work out too well, as I've burnt out from trying to fix cross browser issues (aka get-it-to-work-on-IE-damn-it), handling server-side, client-side, and building a robust communication between the two tier had lot of code not related to application logic....by the time I was burnt out, only tiny bit of application logic was implemented. Vaadin seems like the answer to my problem as it only requires Java and built on top of GWT. However, I am curious how I can incorporate Cross-Domain Javascripting ? Back in LAMP environment, I had a CGI proxy script that loaded external URL, and injected JS into the proxy-loaded page. I used the CGI proxy script, as it rendered Javascript of the external URL well. Is there a class or package for Java or a specific Java web framework similiar to Vaadin that makes this possible ?     Hi! I've been having a bit of a problem with jQuery and XHTML. Basically, I've got an object tag that contains a Web Page in its data attribute. Now, what I want is that when I click a button I get this web page and dinamically change the CSS file it's currently using. I've tried to get the page by using jquery, but all I get is the object itself, not the webpage contained in the object. Thanks!! :)

  • Loose typing not applied to objects

    I have very little experience working with classes and object. I work in a loosely typed language, PHP. I was working with a SimpleXML object and ran into a problem where I was trying to do math with an element of that object like $results->ProductDetail->{'Net'.$i}; If I echoed that value, I'd get 0.53 but when I tried to do math with it, it was converted to 0 Is there a reason that a loosely typed language would not recognize that as a float and handle it as such? Why would "echo" handle it as a string but the math fail to convert it?     Thomas Erl defines SOA as follows in his site: Service-oriented computing represents a new generation distributed computing platform. As such, it encompasses many things, including its own design paradigm and design principles, design pattern catalogs, pattern languages, a distinct architectural model, and related concepts, technologies, and frameworks. This definitely sounds like a whole new category which is parallel to object orientation. Almost one in which you would expect an entirely new language to exist for. Like procedural C and object oriented C#. Here is my understanding: In real life, we don't have entirely new language for SOA. And most application which have SOA architecture have an object oriented design underneath it. SOA is a "strategy" to make the entire application/service distributed and reliable. SOA needs OOPS working underneath it. Is this correct? Where does SOA (if at all it does) fit in with object oriented programming practices? Edit: I have learnt through answers that OOA and SOA work with each other and cannot be compared (in a "which is better" way). I have changed the title to "Relationship between SOA and OOA" rather than "comparison".

    I'm making a simple game, and have decided to try to implement a messaging system. The system basically looks like this: Entity generates message - message is posted to global message queue - messageManager notifies every object of the new message through onMessageReceived(Message msg) - if object wants, it acts on the message. The way I'm making message objects is like this: //base message class, never actually instantiated abstract class Message{ Entity sender; } PlayerDiedMessage extends Message{ int livesLeft; } Now my SoundManagerEntity can do something like this in its onMessageReceived() method public void messageReceived(Message msg){ if(msg instanceof PlayerDiedMessage){ PlayerDiedMessage diedMessage = (PlayerDiedMessage) msg; if(diedMessage.livesLeft == 0) playSound(SOUND_DEATH); } } The pros to this approach: Very simple and easy to implement The message can contain as much as information as you want, because you can just create a new Message subclass that has whatever info necessary. The cons: I can't figure out how I can recycle Message objects to a object pool, unless I have a different pool for each subclass of Message. So I have lots and lots of object creation/memory allocation over time. Can't send a message to a specific recipient, but I haven't needed that yet in my game so I don't mind it too much. What am I missing here? There must be a better implementation or some idea that I'm missing.

  • How are objects modelled in a functional programming language?

    In an answer to this question (written by Pete) there are some considerations about OOP versus FP. In particular, it is suggested that FP languages are not very suitable for modelling (persistent) objects that have an identity and a mutable state. I was wondering if this is true or, in other words, how one would model objects in a functional programming language. From my basic knowledge of Haskell I thought that one could use monads in some way, but I really do not know enough on this topic to come up with a clear answer. So, how are entities with an identity and a mutable persistent state normally modelled in a functional language? EDIT Here are some further details to clarify what I have in mind. Take a typical Java application in which I can (1) read a record from a database table into a Java object, (2) modify the object in different ways, (3) save the modified object to the database. How would this be implemented e.g. in Haskell? I would initially read the record into a record value (defined by a data definition), perform different transformations by applying functions to this initial value (each intermediate value is a new, modified copy of the original record) and then write the final record value to the database. Is this all there is to it? How can I ensure that at each moment in time only one copy of the record is valid / accessible? One does not want to have different immutable values representing different snapshots of the same object to be accessible at the same time.

    Regular readers of my blog will be aware of my friend who called me few days ago with very a funny SQL Problem SQL SERVER – SSMS Query Command(s) completed successfully without ANY Results. This time, it did not take long before he called me up with another interesting problem, although the issue he was facing this time was not that interesting and also very specific to him, however, he insisted me to share with all of you. Let us understand his situation at first. My friend is preparing for DBA exam Exam 70-450: PRO: Designing, Optimizing and Maintaining a Database Server Infrastructure using Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and for the same, he was trying to set up replication on his local laptop. He had installed two different instances of SQL Server on his computer and every time when he started the mirroring, it failed with common error message. The server network address “TCP://SQLServer:5023? cannot be reached or does not exist. Check the network address name and that the ports for the local and remote endpoints are operational. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 1418) Well, before he contacted me, he searched online and checked my article written on the error in mirroring. However, he tried all the four suggestions, but it did not solve his problem. He called me at a reasonable time of late evening (unlike last time, which was midnight!). I even tried all the seven different suggestions myself, as previously proposed in my article; however, none of them worked. While looking at closely at services, I noticed something very simple. He was running all the instances on ‘Network Services’. In fact, his computer was a stand-alone computer. There was no network at all. Also, there was no domain or any other advance network concepts implemented. I just changed services from ‘Network Services’ to ‘Local System’ as his SQL Server was running on his local system and there were no network services. This prompted to restart the services. As this was not the production server and his development machine, we restarted the services on the laptop (do not restart services on production server without proper planning). After changing the ‘services log on’ account to localsystem, when he attempted to reconfigure the mirroring it worked right away. As usually in production server, proper domains are configured and advance network concepts are implemented I had never faced this type of problem earlier. My friend insisted to post this solution to his situation, wherein there was no domain configured and setting up mirroring was throwing an error. According to him, this is bound to help people, like him, who are preparing for certification using single system.   • DNS query appending parent suffix twice

    We're having an issue with DNS clients not being able to resolve certain FQDNs. Within the same domain in which the problem occurs, doing an nslookup against a host name works. However, an nslookup against the hostname.domain.parentdomain1.parentdomain2.net doesn't work. Weird, from outside that domain, the same FQDN query works. Clients in both domains are using the same DNS servers, which are in the "parentdomain1" example. The nslookup comes back with: Non-authoritative answer: Name: hostname.domain.parentdomain1.parentdomain2.net.parentdomain2.net Address: 209.62.20.188 So, the client is appending the "parentdomain2.net" twice. Would appreciate any assistance.

  • How to set up the CNAME in DNS zone record to work with Unbounce

    I'm trying to run split testing on some landing pages I "designed" with Unbounce, but it requires that I set the CNAME record for my domain/sub-domain and I'm having trouble figuring out what is the right way to do it. My host is arvixe (www.arvixe.com) and their customer support has failed to help me for the past 5 days (I spoke to them multiple times). I followed the directions for setting the CNAME record and I was able to set the CNAME record, but I'm consistently unable to verify that the CNAME record is set up correctly. I followed the instructions on Unbounce to verify the CNAME record for my sub-domain (beta.devboost.com) and here are the results: No records found reverse lookup smtp diag port scan blacklist Reported by ns1.SNARE.arvixe.com on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 5:49:57 PM (GMT-6) Here is my DNS zone record from the control panel of my host (last record, CNAME unbouncepages.com): Is there something wrong with my DNS Zone Record? Any ideas ?

    I have a primary google apps for domains account which I use for my personal email, calender, docs etc and is great. I also receive my pop3 company email via settings-Get mail from other accounts in my account. Due to spam I want to make use of gmail servers for my company email and have two options: [1] Add my second domain as a domain alias [2] Create a new apps for domains account If I do [1] above do I access (send and receive) my company email as if it was a separate account or is it merged into my primary domain. I want the two seperated. If I perform [2] can I share my contacts / calender between the two? I also have Act! contact manager which syncs to my primary domain and it is getting messy now with personal and work contacts being changed / sync'd to my Act CM software. I want to try and separate my personal and work contacts (but make the work them avaiable in my primary domain). Hope this makes sense! Your suggestions are gratefully accepted. Thank you

    A very common question which I often receive are: How do I find all the tables used in a particular stored procedure? How do I know which stored procedures are using a particular table? Both are valid question but before we see the answer of this question – let us understand two small concepts – Referenced and Referencing. Here is the sample stored procedure. CREATE PROCEDURE mySP AS SELECT * FROM Sales.Customer GO Reference: The table Sales.Customer is the reference object as it is being referenced in the stored procedure mySP. Referencing: The stored procedure mySP is the referencing object as it is referencing Sales.Customer table. Now we know what is referencing and referenced object. Let us run following queries. I am using AdventureWorks2012 as a sample database. If you do not have SQL Server 2012 here is the way to get SQL Server 2012 AdventureWorks database. Find Referecing Objects of a particular object Here we are finding all the objects which are using table Customer in their object definitions (regardless of the schema).   • Game Components, Game Managers and Object Properties

    I'm trying to get my head around component based entity design. My first step was to create various components that could be added to an object. For every component type i had a manager, which would call every component's update function, passing in things like keyboard state etc. as required. The next thing i did was remove the object, and just have each component with an Id. So an object is defined by components having the same Ids. Now, i'm thinking that i don't need a manager for all my components, for example i have a SizeComponent, which just has a Size property). As a result the SizeComponent doesn't have an update method, and the manager's update method does nothing. My first thought was to have an ObjectProperty class which components could query, instead of having them as properties of components. So an object would have a number of ObjectProperty and ObjectComponent. Components would have update logic that queries the object for properties. The manager would manage calling the component's update method. This seems like over-engineering to me, but i don't think i can get rid of the components, because i need a way for the managers to know what objects need what component logic to run (otherwise i'd just remove the component completely and push its update logic into the manager). Is this (having ObjectProperty, ObjectComponent and ComponentManager classes) over-engineering? What would be a good alternative?

I then installed ddclient on a machine behind my router, with the following conf: Configuration file for ddclient generated by debconf # /etc/ddclient.conf protocol=zoneedit1 use=if, if=eth0 server=www.zoneedit.com login=my_zoneedit_login password=my_zone_edit_password domain.tld When I open a browser and check http://domain.tld I have a site under contruction (from registrar dotsterparking). Is my ddclient conf correct ? Where can I find the errors (while updating my IP) if any ? Thanks a lot, Luc

  • How do I set up DNS with nic.io to point to an AWS EC2 server?

    I purchased a domain one week ago via nic.io. I have elected to provide my own DNS [because they provided no other option]. I'm trying to point my .io domain at my EC2 server instance. I've allocated an elastic IP and associated it with the instance. I can SSH into the instance and access point 80 via the IP address just fine. The IP is 54.235.201.241. nic.io support said the following: "You have selected to provide your own DNS and therefore if there is an issue with the set-up of the name servers you will need to contact your DNS provider." So, I created a Hosted Zone via Route 53 in AWS. This created NS and SOA records. I then set the Primary and Secondary servers at nic.io's domain admin page to the SOA record domains. Additionally, I set the optional servers to the NS domains. I did this two days ago, and I can't access the server via the domain. I ran a DNS check here...still not sure what I need to do: http://mydnscheck.com/?domain=chadjohnson.io&ns1=&ns2=&ns3=&ns4=&ns5=&ns6=. I have no idea what I'm supposed to do. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • OpenGL - have object follow mouse

    I want to have an object follow around my mouse on the screen in OpenGL. (I am also using GLEW, GLFW, and GLM). The best idea I've come up with is: Get the coordinates within the window with glfwGetCursorPos. The window was created with window = glfwCreateWindow( 1024, 768, "Test", NULL, NULL); and the code to get coordinates is double xpos, ypos; glfwGetCursorPos(window, &xpos, &ypos); Next, I use GLM unproject, to get the coordinates in "object space" glm::vec4 viewport = glm::vec4(0.0f, 0.0f, 1024.0f, 768.0f); glm::vec3 pos = glm::vec3(xpos, ypos, 0.0f); glm::vec3 un = glm::unProject(pos, View*Model, Projection, viewport); There are two potential problems I can already see. The viewport is fine, as the initial x,y, coordinates of the lower left are indeed 0,0, and it's indeed a 1024*768 window. However, the position vector I create doesn't seem right. The Z coordinate should probably not be zero. However, glfwGetCursorPos returns 2D coordinates, and I don't know how to go from there to the 3D window coordinates, especially since I am not sure what the 3rd dimension of the window coordinates even means (since computer screens are 2D). Then, I am not sure if I am using unproject correctly. Assume the View, Model, Projection matrices are all OK. If I passed in the correct position vector in Window coordinates, does the unproject call give me the coordinates in Object coordinates? I think it does, but the documentation is not clear. Finally, to each vertex of the object I want to follow the mouse around, I just increment the x coordinate by un[0], the y coordinate by -un[1], and the z coordinate by un[2]. However, since my position vector that is being unprojected is likely wrong, this is not giving good results; the object does move as my mouse moves, but it is offset quite a bit (i.e. moving the mouse a lot doesn't move the object that much, and the z coordinate is very large). I actually found that the z coordinate un[2] is always the same value no matter where my mouse is, probably because the position vector I pass into unproject always has a value of 0.0 for z. Edit: The (incorrectly) unprojected x-values range from about -0.552 to 0.552, and the y-values from about -0.411 to 0.411.

  • Help replacing old Windows 2003 SBS DC with a Win2008 Standard Edition DC

    Objective: Trying to replace a Windows 2003 SBS domain controller with a windows server 2008 Standard Edition Domain Controller. What I did: used ADPREP. Then all user accounts and OUs are successfully replicated into the 2008 server. I have also managed to transfer all the DC roles (operations master,schema,pdc) into the Server 2008. I have also used NETDOM QUERY FSMO . It displayed that all the roles transferred to the 2008 server. Problem: When I am trying to demote the windows 2003 SBS server using DCPROMO, the message is “No other Active Directory for this domain can be contacted”. I also tried shutting down the 2003 server. Users can login into the domain but they have trouble finding SHARED folders. Can someone help me find out what I did wrong ? Need a little push in the right direction here. Thank you very much ?
