• Editing notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file from within windows 7

  I would like to add an address to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts. I am running Windows 7 (Hebrew edition). I am the system administrator. I have tried the command "notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" to edit the file. I can write into the file but the system does not allow me to save into the file. What can be done to be able to make the addition? What is the correct format for this type of file? All lines in the existing file begin with "#". Does this mean anything?

• PHP + IIS Application Pool Identity Windows\Temp permissions

  I am currently running PHP (5.3) on IIS 7.5 on a Win2k8 R2 Web Edition Server and would like to know what, if any, problems or security vulnerabilities I may introduct into a system by assigning Read, Write, Modify & Execute permissions to either IUSR account or the IIS_USERS group for %SystemRoot%\Temp? Should I be altering permissions to that folder at all (as Windows reminds me I probably shouldn't when i attempt to change them)? Should I create a temp folder somewhere else and set permissions accordingly? The problem is when i set Anonymous Authentication (I'm guessing is a more secure option???) to use the App Pool identity, when starting sessions PHP gets stuck in a loop because it's unable to create session files in the %SystemRoot%\Temp folder due to lack of permission on the application pool user or IIS_USERS group. Another problem being ImageMagick (PHP Extension) is being denied access to %SystemRoot%\Temp to write temporary files so is throwing exceptions. I have tried searching Google however have not found anything that touches upon this subject specifically. Any help greatly appreciated.

• High disk time on sql-server

  Hi We have a dedicated sql-server 2008 r2 enterprise edition. The setup is: D: (data files) - stored on local ssd disks (not the same disks as log files) (raid 10) E: (log files) - stored on local ssd disks (not the same disks as data files) (raid 1) F: (transaction log backup) - stored remote on a SAN Today we moved our log files to new disks (from F: to E:). From a shared volume ( F:(SAN)) to dedicated local disks (E:). What then happend was that the "disk time", "avg. transfer time" and "avg disk write queue length" increased on the volume where we have the data files (D:) (not on the volume where the log files are located). The data volume and log volume does not share disks, however they share the same controller card. "Disk idle time" is low for all volumes. One thought is ofcourse that the controller card might be overloaded. But, we need more ideas on where the problem might be.

• Power Supply Not Working?

  So I recently made some purchases for a new computer including: Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R CPU : Intel Core2Quad 2.66Ghz Power Supply: Antec Basiq 500w UPDATE: I got the Power Supply working, the motherboard's lights come on, the video card fan spins, BUT the CPU fan does NOT spin and there is no video. Whats the possibility of lacking power? In the mobo guide it says the use of a power supply providing a 2x4 12V connector is recommended (I do not have this connector) by the CPU manufacturer when using an Intel Extreme Edition (I'm using Core2Quad) UPDATE: Got it working, intstalling windows 7 now. • Ubuntu server: lost prompt on monitor

  Hello All, I am running Ubuntu 9.04 server edition. I have a monitor plugged into the box for occasional admin tasks. I pulled out a USB disk (without unmounting) and the screen is now full with this message: Buffer I/O error on device sdc1, logical block 7778778 I can't seem to clear the screen or get a prompt back. Doesn't appear to be registering keyboard strokes. The box is still running fine (I can ssh in from elsewhere and evrything is running as normal). Any ideas on how to clear screen and get my prompt back?

  Hi all, I'm currently evaluating the feasibility of using VirtualBox (or VMWare) to deploy the follow project to 10 sites Windows XP MSSQL 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services JBoss to run 1 in-house software that mostly query master data (customers/products) and feed to other software Why I want to do this ? Because the IT staffs in my 10 sites are not capable enough and the steps taken to setup those "in-house project" are also complicated What are the cons I can forsee ? Need extra power to run that virtualbox instance The IT staffs won't be much knowledgeable 'bout how to install the stuffs Cost (license for VirtualBox in commercial environment as well as extra OS license) I really seek your inputs on the pro/con of this approach, or any links that I can read further Thanks a lot

• I need to access another user's files.

  My system is an HP netbook running Ubuntu 10 netbook edition from a USB drive. I created an admin account and user account, and left in place the 'ubuntu' account. My netbook came with Windows 7 factory loaded and I did some work in Windows before setting up Linux. I copied my work into the HP Tools FAT32 partition that also came Factory Loaded, and was only 20% full. Only the 'ubuntu' account shows the HP Tools partition. So I would like to either view the partition from the 'admin' or 'user' accounts, or copy files from the partition-to a folder accessible from admin or user. I have already tried right clicking the folder, selecting share, and installing the share package, but I got a string of errors and would prefer a short term, one time solution that does not involve installing the share package. All I need is a few plain text Windows files i was working on.

• Alternatives for HP ProtectTools on EliteBook 2530p

  Hi, I'd like to use the HP fingerprint sensor on my Elitebook 2530p. The system is a fresh Win7 Enterprise 64-bit and we are looking for an alternative to the HP ProtectTools Security Suite, which seems a bit bloated. We have tried the UPEK ProtectorSuite (both WBF and stand-alone edition) and they say they can't find the fingerprint device. The device shows up in device manager, in the BioMetric system configuration I have enabled logon to Windows and Domain credentials. Are there any other fingerprint login software (free or commercial) that you can recommend. Thanks in advance, Alex

• After adding data files to a file group Is there a way to distribute the data into the new files?

  I have a database in a single file group, with a single file group. I've added 7 data files to this file group. Is there a way to rebalance the data over the 8 data files other than by telling sql server to empty the original? If this is the only way, is it possible to allow sql server to start writing to this file? MSDN says that once its empty its marked so no new data will be written to it. What I'm aiming for is 8 equally balanced data files. I'm running SQL Server 2005 standard edition. Thanks

• Java Issues in Microsoft Internet Explorer & Firefox with Java 6 Standard

  I have a user on Windows XP SP3 running Java 6 Standard Edition Update 20 (build 1.6.0_20-b02). The issue is that when Java applets load the Java splash screen is very shaky (I will have to take a screenshot if you don't know what I am talking about) and than the Java applet screen does not show properly. The Applet we use most is for a security camera and you can't view the camera properly because of the Java issues. I have uninstalled Java and re-installed and still having the same issue. I do not see any errors on the Java Console, and this only happens on his computer I am running the same version of Java and the browsers and do not have the same issue on my machine.

• Machine only responds to network requests from machines it is pinging

  I have two machines. WOPR: Ubuntu server edition 10.10 LTS 32 bit Adam Selene: Windows 7 home premium 64 bit / Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 LTS 64 bit I want to be able to SSH from Adam Selene to WOPR, so I connect them to the same network. Here's where things get weird. I cannot connect to WOPR in any way under normal circumstances. But, if WOPR is pinging Adam, then it starts responding to ping requests, HTTP gets, and SSH tunnels. I'm an amateur, and brand new to Ubuntu server, so I suspect there's a misconfiguration somewhere, but there's an off chance it's a bug in the OS. Does anyone know what might cause this behavior?   Since a little time I can't use Exchange Management Console on an exchange 2007 server because of a message which tell me that get-ExchangeServer return that active directory of my server is available.   I am using Google Apps Premier Edition. I want to create a disposable email address service and I want to catch all emails for a domain. This means that I should be able to catch all mails sent to an arbitrary userid and/or arbitrary domain and store them into a single Google Apps account. For example, in a single account I want to get all mails sent to: 1) [email protected] 2) [email protected] without requiring to do any extra configuration in Google Apps for abc or xyz. My app will download mails from this account and process accordingly. I have figured out that I could do (1) by specifying a catch all email address. Is the combination of both (1) and (2) possible?

  I have a VMWare vSphere 5 Hypervisor server that has a static ip address assigned to it by VLAN that is configured to perform NAT. The static IP is assigned to the bare metal server via the NIC's mac address. I want to setup a guest machine to also have a static ip address, how can I go about having this setup? I have assigned a IP for the guest's MAC Address but it doesn't seem to be working as when I ping the ip address it does not respond. The guest is running ubuntu 10.04 server edition. I am trying to assign it a static public ip address. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  Hi there, Layout: i have at customer side a server (win2003 R2 SP2 standard edition 32-bit) with a sql-server 2005 and some databases. This system starts with the /3GB-Switch. The system reports 3.25 GB RAM and taskmanager reports the process of sqlserver.exe with 2758255 K as the process with the highest consumption. The OS separates RAM for applications and for itself, normaly 50:50. But here we have the /3GB-Switch aktivated and i think the part for the applications is more than 50% of RAM. Knowledge (or better not knowledge): Somebody told me that if the OS runs out of memory within his part of RAM, the server runs into pressing mode. Questions: What is this pressing mode? Is pressing mode possible at all in this szenario? What should be done to get more performance out of this sql-server, beside optimizing the database and all this stuff.

• Grub os-probe showing deleted Windows installation

  I recently purchased a Dell Vostro notebook with Ubuntu Netbook edition 10.04 pre-installed. I tried adding a partition and installed Windows XP but it didn't work out due to too many partitions in the system already. Now I have restored the laptop to factory setting using Dell Utility partition and the Windows partition is completely deleted, however my grub2 still shows Windows on /dev/sda2 sudo os-probe Microsoft Windows XP Professional (on /dev/sda2) Any ideas how to remove it from grub? I know I can remove /etc/grub.d/30_os-probe but I am more interested in why os-probe is showing the deleted partition.

  We just deployed Lync Server 2010 in our organization and it is working great so far. The next step for us is to enable enterprise voice so that we can replace our telephones with service that is handled 100% by Lync. This is where I am at a loss. I have a fully deployed Standard Edition Lync server and a hosted VoIP PBX provider with VoIP handsets. I would like to get rid of the handsets and have my company's phone service be handled by Lync client (e.g. someone calls my work number, and Lync rings instead of my old handset that is set up with the PBX) I am new to deploying these types of features.   I'm new to linux and I've set up a web server with Ubuntu Desktop edition so I can practice with the GUI a bit before transitioning to Ubuntu Server. I've already set up a LAMP stack as well as FTP. Now I just need to know how to transfer my web files to the /var/www folder in Ubuntu. Previously I've worked on Mac OS and there's a central server for all the web files where I can FTP to. Now after I've managed to connect via FTP to the Ubuntu server, I see all the folders such as Desktop, Downloads, Documents etc but no web folder. • Windows 8 Unable to perform hibernate

  Windows 8 Enterprise edition x86. Already enabled hibernate option, to have it on shutdown menu (start menu?) and set to hibernate on lid closing. However it's not hibernating for me. When I'm trying to sleep, it's sleep fine and wake up like a kid. But when I'm demanding hibernate, it disconnects internet, turn off screen and be back to lock screen in one second. Steps I've tried. Complete shutdown Clear hiberfile.sys by disabling and enabling back Resetting my power settings. Causes I suspect: Had dual boot with BackTrack with Windows 8 GUI boot manager. It was fine until I reinstall BackTrack, bootmgr resetted and I'm in Ubuntu boot menu;. Using additional hard disk through USB cable.(But it's not a problem before few days, however) How to make my system to hibernate and wakeup again.

• Third-party Information Screen Opening Blank

  I'm working with a client who is trying to use our software, which accesses information (sends & receives) from a third-party website. When this client tries to access these pages, a window opens, as expected, but is completely blank and no error message is received. This is the first time I've seen this with many other clients successfully using this product, which leads me to believe that it has something to do with the settings on the computer somewhere, but cannot figure out what might be happening. Windows Server 2003 R2, Standard Edition, Service Pack 2. Firewall is already off. Tried AVG on & temporarily disabled.

• Raid recovery in gigabyte GA-8I945 Pro

  This was a working machine until a few days ago. And now it won't boot into the OS, during startup if makes clicking sounds (I think from one of the drives). Installed OS: Windows 2003 Web edition Hardware: Gigabyte GA-8I945P Pro , 2*160G Sata in RAID1 configuration , 2 Volumes – 25G and the rest. When I installed windows on it, during setup, I pressed F6 and used ICH7DH drivers of RAID. The manual for the MOBO says: Step 1: After the POST memory test begins and before the operating system boot begins, look for a message which says "Press to enter Configuration utility" (Figure 4). Press CTRL+ I to enter the RAID BIOS setup utility. But the machine never shows this message. BIOS SATA RAID/AHCI Mode is set to RAID. Any ideas or pointers on what I can do to recover my data?   Hi, We have purchased an unmanaged VPS windows hosting solution from one of the UK based companies. We have Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition. We need to install certain third party applications on that server. Unfortunatelly, one of the applications requires a MAC address to be present at all times - this is their way of making sure that software is not pirated (which it isn't). We have tried installing a virtual loopback network card, but this has brought the server down - i.e. we couldn't connect using remote desktop any longer. At the moment we are limited with what we can try. This is an unmanaged solution, therefore any support including restarts is rather costly. Are you aware of any low-risk solutions? Thank you

• What version of Windows Server 2008 to Get

  One of the projects I'm working on is looking like we're going to need to migrate from CentOS 5.4 over to something else (we need to run Postgresql 8.3+, and CentOS/RHEL only support 8.1), and one of the options will be Windows Server. Since 2008 R2 is out that's what I'm looking at. I'll need to run Postgres and Tomcat and don't really require anything that Windows has like IIS (if I can run Server Core, even better!). The other kicker is it will be virtualized through VMWare ESXI 4.0 so that we have three separate boxes: development, Quality, and Production servers. From a licensing standpoint though, and I good enough with just the Web Server edition? Am I right in assuming that will be three licenses? Or should I just jump up to Enterprise so that I get 4 VM licenses?
