• How to find history of shell commands since machine was created?

  I created an Ubuntu virtualbox machine a couple weeks ago and have been working on projects off and on in it since then. Now I would like to find the syntax of some commands I typed in the terminal a week ago, but I have opened and closed the terminal window and restarted the machine numerous times. How can I get the history command to go back to the first command I typed after I created the machine, or is there another place that all the commands are stored in Ubuntu?

• Is it OK to set state within Event Raising methods?

  I ran across this pattern in the code of a library I'm using. It sets state within the event raising method, but only if the event is not null. protected virtual void OnMyEvent(EventArgs e) { if(MyEvent != null) { State = "Executing"; // Only sets state if MyEvent != null. MyEvent(this,e); } } Which means that the state is not set when overriding the method: protected override void OnMyEvent(EventArgs e) { base.OnMyEvent(e); Debug.Assert( State == "Executing" ); // This fails } but is only set when handling the event: foo.MyEvent += (o, args) => Debug.Assert(State == "Executing"); // This passes Setting state within the if(MyEvent != null) seems like bad form, but I've checked the Event Design Guidelines and it doesn't mention this. Do you think this code is incorrect? If so, why? (Reference to design guidelines would be helpful). Edit for Context: It's a Control, I'm trying to create subclass of it, and the state that it's setting is calling EnsureChildControls() conditionally based upon there being an event handler. I can call EnsureChildControls() myself, but I consider that something of a hack.

  Like everyone else ;), I need to test my code on IE6 and IE7. Now IE8 has some great tools for developer, which I'd like to use. I'd also like to start testing my code with IE8, as it will soon be released. The question is: how to run IE6, IE7, and IE8 on the same machine. So far with IE6 and IE7 I've been using Multiple IE. But people have reported (see comments on the page linked in the previous sentence) issue with IE6 after installing IE8. Those errors are related to focus in form fields. Running IE7 wouldn't matter so much as IE8 can use the IE7 rendering engine, but we still need IE6. Any recommendation on how to IE6, IE7, and IE8 on the same machine?

Scanning through Locals quickly shows the values of variables, etc. However, I'm at a loss how to find out the values contained in session state variables? Can anyone give me a hand? Lets say I put a breakpoint right after: Session("first_name") = "Rob Roy" How do I view the value contained in Session("first_name") from locals?

• Winforms Checkbox : CheckState property Indeterminate renders differently

  In C# environment, setting a checkbox's CheckState property to Indeterminate displays a "green square" inside the checkbox. In VB environment, this displays as a "grayed out check" (which is less intuitive, even for "dummy" users). How do i make Indeterminate state look like a "green square" in VB.NET ? Btw, i am using VS2008, Winforms 2.0. (Btw2: I tried to create two tags CheckState Indeterminate, which is more appropriate to my question, but disallowed by StackOverflow due to points!)

• Web Setup Project - Getting the Current Machine Name

  I've got a web setup project with a custom screen in it that asks for a machine name. Is there anyway to prepopulate this field with the current machines name? For the case that I need it for just including "Localhost" does not meet my requirements. "Environment.MachineName" will return the machine name within a code block which would be fine if I was needing it in a custom action. But it seems custom actions don't excecute until after you go through the installation wizard... So I cant actually use it. Anyway let me know what you think.

• Maven 2.1.0 not passing on system properties to Java virtual machine

  We use the command line to pass on system properties to the Java virtual machine when running our Hudson builds on a Linux box. It used to work quite well in 2.0.9 by since we upgraded to 2.1.0 it has stopped working altogether. The system properties just never make it to the Java virtual machine. I have created a small test project and indeed it does not work at all. I have attached it in case you want to give it a go.   I have to write a C# application that runs on WindowsME. Yes, I mean that Microsoft operating system that has been forgotten a long long time ago. My program needs no user interaction and as WindowsME doesn't support services, it will be a console application. Furthermore it will be used on more modern operating systems, where the user can choose whether to start it as console application or install it as a windows service. Now suppose the software is running on WinME and the user decides to logoff or shutdown the machine without a prior quit of my software. WinME complains about my program still running and asks if it should kill the process. Apart from the bad user experiance, this means that the application is not shut down properly. So I look for a way to be informed if the user logs off or wants to shutdown the machine to be able to perform a proper shutdown of my software first.

I initially thought I was going to have to manipulate the session variables on each "set" so that the new values were updated in the session. However I tried using it as-is, and somehow, it remembers state. For example, if run this code on one page: UserContext.Current.User.FirstName = "Micah"; And run this code in a different browser tab, FirstName is displayed correctly: Response.Write(UserContext.Current.User.FirstName); Can someone tell me (prove) how this data is getting persisted in the session?   I am using my gmail's email account to send emails in asp.net website. It works fine on hosting server but it donot works if I try to sent email on loclserver. Please guide me what I should do to make it sending emails even on localserver ? Do I need to install some smtp server on my local machine ? I have not installed any smtp server on my machine.   Hi, I'm running Windows XP sp3 on my mac using bootcamp. Objective: I'd like to move this partition to a windows machine. This is what I tried: 1. create image using winclone 2. restore drive to disk partition on windows machine using paragon 3. reboot from new partition Results: it attempts to boot in XP (windows flag and progress bar load screen) but then gives me the old BSOD. safe mode just hangs while loading. (I then uninstalled KB977165 on a hunch, but that did nothing to help the issue.) Any ideas, advice, etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It's a little hard to tell from the documentation but it seems as though I will have to have a separate process for cleaning up expired sessions since the database will not have a way to notify the session state store that a session has expired. Am I wrong about this? I haven't seen an alternative example for overriding the SetItemExpireCallback method.

  Hi folks, I need to do a mysqldump of a database on a remote server, but the server does not have mysqldump installed. I would like to use the mysqldump on my machine to connect to the remote database and do the dump on my machine. I have tried to create an ssh tunnel and then do the dump, but this does not seem to work. I tried: ssh -f -L3310:remote.server:3306 [email protected] -N The tunnel is created with success. If I do telnet localhost 3310 I get some blurb which shows the correct server mysql version. However, doing the following seems to try to connect locally mysqldump -P 3310 -h localhost -u mysql_user -p database_name table_name Can someone assist me? Thanks, Mauritz

But when I remote bridge interface from /etc/network/interfaces And configure eth0 as below it works fine The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.0.223 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.0.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255 dns-nameservers 62.215.6.51 gateway 192.168.0.1 how can i setup bridge interface correctly and how would my /etc/netwrok/interfaces file would look a like.

• Disk Cost does not change for a per machine and a per user install

  I want to know how can i change or rather the computer changes the disk cost in case of a per user or a per machine install. I have an installer that is approximate 50 MB in size when i check in the program files how ever when i am using the DiskCostDlg it shows me 96 MB , i am doing a per user and a per machine install and i am surprised to see that in both the cases the disk requirement is same. I need to know if there is a possibility of changing the disk requirements or is it a default property of the Wix Installer. Thanks

  I develop rails in ubuntu and i just set up a virtualbox windows xp virtual machine for IE testing. I'd like to be able to run mongrel_rails in ubuntu and then jump into the vm to check it out, so i can jump back, make a change, jump into the vm again, reload the page and test it, etc. Is this possible? In this sort of situation in the past i've had to set up an apache server on my dev machine and run mongrel under that, in order to get an externally visible (ie visible to my local network) ip address that i then paste into the address bar of IE in the vm. Is this really necessary? Is there a simpler way? Can i do something with my /etc/hosts or sites-available files to just make up some arbitrary network address which points to localhost:3000 in ubuntu? Or something? thanks, max

• Windows Workflow runs very slowlyh on my DEV machine

  I am developing an app using WF hosted in IIS as WCF services as a business layer. This runs quickly on any machine running Windows Server 2008 R2, but very slowly on our dev machines, running Windows XP SP3. Yesterday, the workflows were as fast on my dev machine as they are on the server for the whole day. Today, they are back to running slowly again (I rebooted overnight) Has anyone else experienced this problem with workflows running slowly on IIS in XP? What did you do to fix it?

• HttpWebRequest giving "target machine actively refused" error

  I am trying to access a URI through HttpWebRequest and am getting the "target machine actively refused" error. I know from a machine that has no proxy this works fine and i know my corp internet uses a PAC file to determine the proxy however it doesnt seem to be picking this up for me. Here is what i know: My app.config has I presume i dont need to specify WebRequest.DefaultWebProxy but that makes no difference I can explictly set the proxy with WebProxy and NetworkCredentials which works Any ideas? Anybody have experience with PAC files and why I can access the target through IE but not through code. obviously if i hardcode the proxy it all works so it would seem that this same proxy is not being auto detected?
