  • Compaq Motherboard gives "CPU Fan Error"

    I have a motherboard for a HP business desktop dx5150 PC. The model written on the board is "MS-7050" and it is for an AMD socket 939 processor. I got everything installed in it, and when I turned it on, it showed a message stating that there was a "CPU Fan Error" (or some similar language) and then turned off. It never stays on for more than about 30 seconds, probably less. The fan had previously been working great, but I replaced it anyway with a brand new Cooler Master fan. This did not work. I then reset the BIOS with the jumpers on the board, no dice. I replaced the CMOS battery. Same error. I then replaced the entire computer power supply with a brand new Antec, same error. The fan header is keyed, and has room for 3 pins. The CPU fan is designed the same way, so its not that I'm missing a temperature sensor or anything. Can anyone give some suggestions? Especially maybe some secret keystrokes to bypass this error?

    I want to use the Emacs theme billw, except with a different background colour. I have the following in my .emacs file: (require 'color-theme) (color-theme-initialize) (color-theme-billw) (set-background-color "gray12") However this doesn't seem to change the background colour on startup; I need to manually run set-background-color "gray12" in the minibuffer at the beginning of each session. Any help with this? I tried creating my own custom theme based on the output of color-theme-print but this caused more problems than it's worth...

  • nginx rule to capture header and append value as query string

    I have an interesting problem I need to solve in nginx: one of the sites I'm building receives inbound traffic on port 80 (and only port 80) which may have a certain header set in the request. If this header is present I need to capture the value of it and append that as a querystring parameter before doing a temporary redirect (rewrite) to a different (secure) server, while passing the paramater and any other querystring params along.   • VirtualPC/XPMode... trying to let a VM access pages served using IIS on the host machine

    My host PC is running IIS7.5 under Windows7. I have a VM running XP to let me use IE6, but I've no idea what network settings on the VM/host are needed so the VM can access pages on the host. I thought if the host was 192.168.1.1, then from the VM I'd simply do http://192.168.1.1/... if I do this on the host it works but the VM can't see it. I'm assuming there are some shortcuts here rather than manually having to set up loads of permissions, e.g a shortcut way of letting the VM access the host maybe?

  • Is there a way to do a Windows 7 repair install when you are unable to start/boot Windows 7?

    My understanding is that the only way to perform a "repair install" in Windows 7 is to run the install setup.exe within the Windows 7 installation you want to repair. This seems a little brain dead to me since usually the reason I wanted to perform the repair install was because the existing installation was so broken that I could no longer boot and use it. It seems Microsoft is saying my only option in that case is to do a clean install and then reinstall all my apps. So I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to perform a Windows 7 repair install ... one that preserves your existing OS settings and application installs ... on a Windows 7 partition that cannot be booted.

    I have a localized version of Windows 7. I can't figure out where windows gets the names for files and directories on the system. For instance, consider the following (default) files. > cd C:\Users\Public\Pictures\Sample Pictures > dir Chrysanthemum.jpg Desert.jpg ... When I view these files on the default file explorer I see these names: Crisantemo.jpg Deserto.jpg ... This seems to imply that each file can be somehow assigned a localized name somewhere. However I cannot figure out how. Would appreciate if someone could shed some light on this issue. Thanks. UPDATE EDIT: The desktop.ini file in the folder containing Chrysanthemum.jpg contains the following entries. The .dll files used to translate the various resources are unfortunately not human-readable and I have no clue as to how they could be generated for other files created by the user to be translated, but they serve the purpose, and solve the mystery which lead to the post.   • volume group disappeared after xfs_check run

    EDIT** I have a volume group consisting of 5 RAID1 devices grouped together into a lvm and formatted with xfs. The 5th RAID device lost its RAID config (cat /proc/mdstat does not show anything). The two drives are still present (sdj and sdk), but they have no partitions. The LVM appeared to be happily using sdj up until recently. (doing a pvscan showed the first 4 RAID1 devices + /dev/sdj) I removed the LVM from the fstab, rebooted, then ran xfs_check on the LV. It ran for about half an hour, then stopped with an error. I tried rebooting again, and this time when it came up, the logical volume was no longer there. It is now looking for /dev/md5, which is gone (though it had been using /dev/sdj earlier). /dev/sdj was having read errors, but after replacing the SATA cable, those went away, so the drive appears to be fine for now. Can I modify the /etc/lvm/backup/dedvol, change the device to /dev/sdj and do a vgcfgrestore? I could try doing a pvcreate --uuid KZron2-pPTr-ZYeQ-PKXX-4Woq-6aNc-AG4rRJ /dev/sdj to make it recognize it, but I'm afraid that would erase the data on the drive UPDATE: just changing the pv to point to /dev/sdj did not work vgcfgrestore --file /etc/lvm/backup/dedvol dedvol Couldn't find device with uuid 'KZron2-pPTr-ZYeQ-PKXX-4Woq-6aNc-AG4rRJ'.   • Why is my iPhone WIFI so slow at home?

    When my iPhone is connected to my home wireless network, the internet is unusably slow. I installed the speedtest.net application; here are some results from tonight: Down: 0.0kB/s, Up: 0.0kB/s, ping: 2230ms Down: 2.5kB/s, Up: 40.5kB/s, ping: 2182ms Down: 0.0kB/s, Up: 20.0kB/s, ping: 197ms For comparison, here is the result from my iMac to the same server, which is on the same wireless network (and has no wired connection): Down: 139kB/s, Up: 53.8kB/s, ping: 182ms Neither my iMac nor the Dell laptop also on the network have experienced the wifi problems I get with my iPhone. On the other hand, I tried browsing a website on the wireless network at work with no problems. EDIT: SpeedTest at work gives me 156kB/s down. EDIT2: Girlfriend (owner of the Dell) reports actually the internet is sometimes very slow. Perhaps there is more going on. No problems with my iMac. My router is a ASUS WL-500g Premium V2 running OpenWrt Kamikaze with X-Wrt Extensions 8.09.

  • MS Outlook Voting mismatch

    I did send out an Outlook vote to hundreds of employees, using their email address (which is mostly [email protected], but there are many exceptions). The incoming votes are not matched against the email address, but against the display name. Unfortunately, the display name has no real standard either. So instead of seeing this: John[email protected] Voted: Yes [email protected] Voted: No I see this: John[email protected] [email protected] Doe, Johnathan Philip Voted: Yes Doe - Peeters, Marian Voted: No In the actual list I see the addresses that I sent the vote to PLUS extra lines with the votes that came back. Is there a quick way to match my "send" list with the "received" list? One thing I thought of was to dump the global address book in a file and in Excel use =vlookup. But that seems a lot of work (and I am not even sure that I have the authorization to dump the address book).

  • Permissions in OS X for iTunes library with multiple users

    I currently have a lot of music on an external drive and my iTunes set up from there. However, periodically, when the external drive isn't connected, iTunes will default back to the library location of my home directory user path. I don't want to mess with an external drive, as my Mac's HD is large enough to house the music collection. However, I have 4 family members – all with their own logins – using this same gob of music. I don't want four copies of the library, only one with all libraries referencing it. So, what I want to do is: Move all music files to a shared directory at /Macintosh HD/users/music. I created this directory and adjusted permissions, so all four users can read and write to this directory. Get all four accounts to reference this library instead of the external or local home locations I am hoping I can just check the box to keep library organized in my account, which is the admin and let iTunes move it all. Then delete current libraries for each account and re-add from the new shared location. Will the iTunes organization process cause permissions issues either by setting permissions to all the files access to my account only or write permissions or any other 'gotcha'? I am having a hard time coming up with a smooth solution that won't break everything and cause me to have mega duplicates or access issues. I would prefer not to do any XML library file editing if possible. Am I dreaming?

  • Understanding ESXi and Memory Usage

    Hi, I am currently testing VMWare ESXi on a test machine. My host machine has 4gigs of ram. I have three guests and each is assigned a memory limit of 1 GB (and only 512 MB reserved). The host summary screen shows a memory capacity of 4082.55 MB and a usage of 2828 MB with two guests running. This seems to make sense, two gigs for each VM plus an overhead for the host. 800MB seems high but that is still reasonable. But on the Resource Allocation Screen I see a memory capacity of 2356 MB and an available capacity of 596 MB. Under the configuration tab, memory link I see a physical total of 4082.5 MB, System of 531.5 MB and VM of 3551.0 MB. I have only allocated my VMs for a gig each, and with two VMs running they are taking up almost two times the amount of ram allocated. Why is this, and why does the Resource Allocation screen short change me so much?

  • kill a hung mount process

    I have a virtual machine drive that ran out of space, so I shutdown the VM, extended the volume using lvextend. After resizing the partition (ext3), I ran e2fsck on it, and it found and corrected errors. Unfortunately, when I ran efsck one more time, there were more errors that had to be fixed. I went through 3 rounds of e2fsck before I decided to try mounting it to clean up some space manually. I tried mounting it, but the mount process hung. I tried to "kill -9" the mount process, but that did not kill it. I killed the parent process, but that did not kill it either. Any ideas on how to kill a rogue mount process?   • FTP upload stalls at same point every time on FileZilla

    On two different FTP accounts, I am having problems uploading files. I can login and see the contents of the dir, and start an upload. Using Filezilla the transfer seems to always stall at either 0.9% or 1.2% (always those two numbers) and may simply hang, or keep restarting and then again stop at the same point. WindowsXP FTP is not great but I get similar types of problems there... it starts uploading and after a short while I get a timeout error. FTP used to work fine, and I don't know if it's these accounts in particular (both have the same service provider although purchased on opposite sides of the world) or if "FTP is broken on my PC"... can that even happen?!

Note that we know about Computer Management System Tools Shared Folders Open Files. We don't want to see so much real-time who's using the shares but we are interested more in a logging solution, ideally interpreting / using the data from Win7's Event Viewer.

    Hi, I've been using CCNet for some time now but just upgraded to .net 4. I've installed the new framework on my dev box along with vs2010 and on my CC.net server as well. I've just installed CruiseControl.net version 1.5.6804.1, and changed my MSBuild tasks to point to the new v4.0.30319 framework directory. I've got two projects on .net 4 now that just don't build. They build perfectly well in VS and run well on both Cassini and IIS.     Let's say I have a command called foo which prints a number to the screen when called: $foo 3 Let's also say I have another command called bar which prints another number to the screen when called: $bar 5 I'm looking to write a shell script which will add together the output of foo and bar. How would I do that? (The outputs from the commands are not known ahead of time. They just so happen to have been 3 and 5 the last time they were run. They could have been something else.) Thanks!

  • Can I make Puppet's module-to-file mapping to start searching at the top of the modules tree?

    Consider these two Puppet module files: # File modules/a/manifests/b/c.pp class a::b::c { include b::c } # File modules/b/manifests/c.pp class b::c { notify { "In b::c": } } It seems that when Puppet hits the include b::c directive in class a::b::c, it searches for the corresponding *.pp file by looking backwards from the current class and decides that it find the correct file located at ../../b/c.pp. In other words, it resolves b::c to the same *.pp file that the include b::c statement appears in: modules/a/manifests/b/c.pp I expected it (and would like it) to instead find and load the file modules/b/manifests/c.pp. Is there a way to make Puppet do this? If not, it seems to me that module names may not contain any other module names anywhere within them, which is a pretty surprising restriction.

  • Sharing Windows Folders on a Network... other PCs see but can't access

    I'm soooo tired of network setup issues. All I want to do is share a folder and all it's sub-folders so other PCs on my network can view and change this remote location. Why is it that setting a dir to "shared" doesn't actually make it usable in any way? The other PC can see the fodler but is unable to actually open it and look inside. It seems every time I want to do this I go through some semi-random process of right clicking the folder and enabling sharing, then looking in the folder properties to add permissions and other sharing... and then I end up with some folders working but others will randomly block permission on certain files or sub-dirs. I have 5 PCs in my local testing network and I cannot believe it should be this complicated... where is the simple "make this folder work on the network" option?! I have a mixture of XP, Vista & W7 machines, but this seems common to all of them.

  • Tortoise SVN, find all non-added files?

    I am using Tortoise SVN on Windows. I have a deep directory structure (using cakephp). After creating several files I then went through and +added them. The new files show a ? next to them and a + next to them after set to add so it is easy to tell which files still need to be added. this is the same with folders. However if a new file is inside an old folder there will still be the green checkmark. You won't have any indicator telling you there is a new file. So I forgot to add one before a commit. This wouldn't be so bad as I could just add it and recommit. However, I also made this a tag, so I had recommit to the tag and the trunk. Anyways this wouldn't have been an issue if there was an indicator on existing folders that contain new files. Is there a way to set this up?
