  • Rkhunter reports file properties have changed

    - by CountMurphy
I am running a fully updated LTS copy of Ubuntu server. Today I ran rkhunter (as I do from time to time). This is the output I got: Warning: The file properties have changed: [15:52:25] File: /bin/ps [15:52:25] Current hash: f22991ec93ae966c856d367f42fc3d8a484bd827 [15:52:25] Stored hash : 1892268bf195ac118076b1b0f53e7a637eb6fbb3 [15:52:25] Current inode: 142902 Stored inode: 130894 [15:52:25] Current file modification time: 1324307913 (19-Dec-2011 07:18:33) [15:52:25] Stored file modification time : 1260992081 (16-Dec-2009 11:34:41) Warning: The file properties have changed: [15:52:33] File: /usr/bin/ldd [15:52:33] Current hash: f1e2ca5aa3a28994e2cebb64c993a72b7d97b28c [15:52:33] Stored hash : 295d9cedb121a5e431a39a6d201ecd7ce5640497 [15:52:33] Current inode: 2236210 Stored inode: 2234359 [15:52:33] Current size: 5280 Stored size: 5279 [15:52:33] Current file modification time: 1331165514 (07-Mar-2012 16:11:54) [15:52:33] Stored file modification time : 1295653965 (21-Jan-2011 15:52:45) Warning: The file properties have changed: [15:52:37] File: /usr/bin/pgrep [15:52:37] Current hash: 3eada9a96760f3e2c9111cfe32901d1432813c1d [15:52:37] Stored hash : ce265d0db9964b173fe5036f703a9b8d66e55df3 [15:52:37] Current inode: 2229646 Stored inode: 2224867 [15:52:37] Current file modification time: 1324307913 (19-Dec-2011 07:18:33) [15:52:37] Stored file modification time : 1260992081 (16-Dec-2009 11:34:41) Warning: The file properties have changed: [15:52:41] File: /usr/bin/top [15:52:41] Current hash: 6be13737d8b0950cea2f1ae3a46d4af713dbe971 [15:52:41] Stored hash : c7b495ecef3982eeb6f08a511861b1a1ae8775e6 [15:52:41] Current inode: 2229629 Stored inode: 2224862 [15:52:41] Current file modification time: 1324307913 (19-Dec-2011 07:18:33) [15:52:41] Stored file modification time : 1260992081 (16-Dec-2009 11:34:41) Warning: The file properties have changed: [15:52:53] File: /usr/sbin/cron [15:52:53] Current hash: e783ca973f970aa8a4bf5edc670e690b33914c3d [15:52:53] Stored hash : 4718257a8060736b9058aed025c992f02a74a5a7 [15:52:53] Current inode: 2224719 Stored inode: 2228839 [15:52:54] Current file modification time: 1330965568 (05-Mar-2012 08:39:28) There were also a few other I left out. Please tell me these are false positives..... Edit: is something else like rkhunter I can run for a second scan?

  • Approach to Authenticate Clients to TCP Server

    - by dab
I'm writing a Server/Client application where clients will connect to the server. What I want to do, is make sure that the client connecting to the server is actually using my protocol and I can "trust" the data being sent from the client to the server. What I thought about doing is creating a sort of hash on the client's machine that follows a particular algorithm. What I did in a previous version was took their IP address, the client version, and a few other attributes of the client and sent it as a calculated hash to the server, who then took their IP, and the version of the protocol the client claimed to be using, and calculated that number to see if they matched. This works ok until you get clients that connect from within a router environment where their internal IP is different from their external IP. My fix for this was to pass the client's internal IP used to calculate this hash with the authentication protocol. My fear is this approach is not secure enough. Since I'm passing the data used to create the "auth hash". Here's an example of what I'm talking about: Client IP: 192.168.1.10, Version: 2.4.5.2 hash = 2*4*5*1 * (1+9+2) * (1+6+8) * (1) * (1+0) Client Connects to Server client sends: auth hash ip version Server calculates that info, and accepts or denies the hash. Before I go and come up with another algorithm to prove a client can provide data a server (or use this existing algorithm), I was wondering if there are any existing, proven, and secure systems out there for generating a hash that both sides can generate with general knowledge. The server won't know about the client until the very first connection is established. The protocol's intent is to manage a network of clients who will be contributing data to the server periodically. New clients will be added simply by connecting the client to the server and "registering" with the server. So a client connects to the server for the first time, and registers their info (mac address or some other kind of unique computer identifier), then when they connect again, the server will recognize that client as a previous person and associate them with their data in the database.

  • Implementing parts of rfc4226 (HOTP) in mysql

    - by Moose Morals
Like the title says, I'm trying to implement the programmatic parts of RFC4226 "HOTP: An HMAC-Based One-Time Password Algorithm" in SQL. I think I've got a version that works (in that for a small test sample, it produces the same result as the Java version in the code), but it contains a nested pair of hex(unhex()) calls, which I feel can be done better. I am constrained by a) needing to do this algorithm, and b) needing to do it in mysql, otherwise I'm happy to look at other ways of doing this. What I've got so far: -- From the inside out... -- Concatinate the users secret, and the number of time its been used -- find the SHA1 hash of that string -- Turn a 40 byte hex encoding into a 20 byte binary string -- keep the first 4 bytes -- turn those back into a hex represnetation -- convert that into an integer -- Throw away the most-significant bit (solves signed/unsigned problems) -- Truncate to 6 digits -- store into otp -- from the otpsecrets table select (conv(hex(substr(unhex(sha1(concat(secret, uses))), 1, 4)), 16, 10) & 0x7fffffff) % 1000000 into otp from otpsecrets; Is there a better (more efficient) way of doing this?

  • How add service reference in visual studio 2008 authenticating against password-protected web servic

    - by user312305
Hello, first time here... great site Well, I want to reference a web service, and it requires user/pass authentication. In VS 2008, if I try to "add reference", or "add service reference", all I can type is the URL, there's no way to input my credentials. Obviously, if I try to load the ws, it shows me a nice message: "The request failed with HTTP status 403: Forbidden. Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved: The HTTP request is unauthorized with client authentication scheme 'Anonymous'. The authentication header received from the server was 'Basic realm="weblogic"'. The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized." So my question is: Is it possible (using VS 2008) to add a reference to a web service that is protected? How? Any help is kindly appreciated. Thanks!

  • AWS Amazon EC2 - password-less SSH login for non-root users using PEM keypairs

    - by Mark White
We've got a couple of clusters running on AWS (HAProxy/Solr, PGPool/PostgreSQL) and we've setup scripts to allow new slave instances to be auto-included into the clusters by updating their IPs to config files held on S3, then SSHing to the master instance to kick them to download the revised config and restart the service. It's all working nicely, but in testing we're using our master pem for SSH which means it needs to be stored on an instance. Not good. I want a non-root user that can use an AWS keypair who will have sudo access to run the download-config-and-restart scripts, but nothing else. rbash seems to be the way to go, but I understand this can be insecure unless setup correctly. So what security holes are there in this approach: New AWS keypair created for user.pem (not really called 'user') New user on instances: user Public key for user is in ~user/.ssh/authorized_keys (taken by creating new instance with user.pem, and copying it from /root/.ssh/authorized_keys) Private key for user is in ~user/.ssh/user.pem 'user' has login shell of /home/user/bin/rbash ~user/bin/ contains symbolic links to /bin/rbash and /usr/bin/sudo /etc/sudoers has entry "user ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: ~user/.bashrc sets PATH to /home/user/bin/ only ~user/.inputrc has 'set disable-completion on' to prevent double tabbing from 'sudo /' to find paths. ~user/ -R is owned by root with read-only access to user, except for ~user/.ssh which has write access for user (for writing known_hosts), and ~user/bin/* which are +x Inter-instance communication uses 'ssh -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no -i ~user/.ssh/user.pem user@ sudo ' Any thoughts would be welcome. • Convert URI to GUID

    - by David Rutten
What is a good way to convert a file path (URI) into a System.Guid? I'd like to minimize the possibility of a collision, but I'm happy with a reasonably unique hashing (probably never more than a few dozen/hundred items in the database)

  • Firefox Password script same PW auto login for 1000s devices Possible to use greasemonkey

    - by ritztech
I currently work in a position that i have to manage and access 1000s of pages for troubleshooting and new setup.... and im trying to figure out a way for firefox or chrome to setup ANYtime it sees for instance a a web based page for equipment like (CISCO, Linksys, Sonicwall, T1 controllers) from the manufacture in the Title bar or from the originating page place a set up 2 - 3 passwords to auto log on with. 1st one of course being the most common so it logs in faster.. I access about 14 different web based products with passwords tied to each of them and if someway i can grab info stating that hey this company is cisco/sonicwall/linksys/hp/ log on with these set of 3-5 credintials. Using possible If then statements.... is that hard i saw some script files but not sure if its difficult because some apps use the MSG BOX built in feature and some use the form submit method built on the page unless i can have 2 different grease monkey scripts at the same time.... thanks.

  • Generate unique hashes for django models

    - by becomingGuru
I want to use unique hashes for each model rather than ids. I implemented the following function to use it across the board easily. import random, hashlib from base64 import urlsafe_b64encode def set_unique_random_value(model_object,field_name='hash_uuid',length=5,use_sha=True,urlencode=False): while 1: uuid_number = str(random.random())[2:] uuid = hashlib.sha256(uuid_number).hexdigest() if use_sha else uuid_number uuid = uuid[:length] if urlencode: uuid = urlsafe_b64encode(uuid)[:-1] hash_id_dict = {field_name:uuid} try: model_object.__class__.objects.get(**hash_id_dict) except model_object.__class__.DoesNotExist: setattr(model_object,field_name,uuid) return I'm seeking feedback, how else could I do it? How can I improve it? What is good bad and ugly about it?

  • How to group using XSLT

    - by AdRock
I'm having trouble grouping a set of nodes. I've found an article that does work with grouping and i have tested it and it works on a small test stylesheet i have I now need to use it in my stylesheet where I only want to select node sets that have a specific value. What I want to do in my stylesheet is select all users who have a userlevel of 2 then to group them by the volunteer region. What happens at the minute is that it gets the right amount of users with userlevel 2 but doesn't print them. It just repeats the first user in the xml file. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"> <xsl:key • Logging IP address for uniqueness without storing the IP address itself for privacy

    - by szabgab
In a web application when logging some data I'd like to make sure I can identify data that came at differetn times but from the same IP address. On the other hand for privacy concerns as the data will be released publicly I'd like to make sure the actual IP cannot be retrieved. So I need some one way mapping of the IP addresses to some other strings that ensures 1-1 mapping. If I understand correctly then MD5, SHA1 or SHA256 could be a solution. I wonder if they are not too expensive in terms of processing needed? I'd be interested in any solution though if there is implementation in Perl that would be even better.

  • OTP or S/KEY - Conversion of Hex string into 6 readable words

    - by Garbit
As seen in RFC2289 (S/KEY), there is a list of words that must be used when converting the hexadecimal string into a readable format. How would i go about doing so? The RFC mentions: The one-time password is therefore converted to, and accepted as, a sequence of six short (1 to 4 letter) English words. Each word is chosen from a dictionary of 2048 words; at 11 bits per word, all one-time passwords may be encoded. Read more: http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1760.html#ixzz0fu7QvXfe Does this mean converting a hex into decimal and then using that as an index for an array of words. The other thing it could be is using a text encoding e.g. 1111 might equal dog in UTF-8 encoding thanks in advance for your help!

  • Hashing words to numbers with respect to definition

    - by thornate
As part of a larger project, I need to read in text and represent each word as a number. For example, if the program reads in "Every good boy deserves fruit", then I would get a table that converts 'every' to '1742', 'good' to '977513', etc. Now, obviously I can just use a hashing algorithm to get these numbers. However, it would be more useful if words with similar meanings had numerical values close to each other, so that 'good' becomes '6827' and 'great' becomes '6835', etc. As another option, instead of a simple integer representing each number, it would be even better to have a vector made up of multiple numbers, eg (lexical_category, tense, classification, specific_word) where lexical_category is noun/verb/adjective/etc, tense is future/past/present, classification defines a wide set of general topics and specific_word is much the same as described in the previous paragraph. Does any such an algorithm exist? If not, can you give me any tips on how to get started on developing one myself? I code in C++.

    - by Greg
Hi, I found this code for alphanumeric check ("Letters, numbers, spaces or underscores") but I want to change so I will be able to write only letters or numbers. Can anyone tell me how to change this code: function(value, element) { return this.optional(element) || /^\w+$/i.test(value);} Thanks! Greg

  • Can I use a ShareThis/AddThis Button if my site's navigation relies on Hash tags in the url?

    - by John Himmelman
I want to embed a ShareThis/AddThis button on my site but the site's navigation relies on Hash tags in the url. Each page is assigned a unique hash value (ie, http://domain.com/index.php#products). Changing the navigation/page design isn't an option. Will these service preserve the hash value (both embed JS on the page)? If they don't, what are some alternative solutions?

  • Django: Password protect photo url's?

    - by MikeN
From my Django application I want to serve up secure photos. The photos are not for public consumption, I only want logged in users to have the ability to view them. I don't want to rely on obfuscated file id's (giving a photo a UUID of a long number) and count on that being hidden in my media folder. How would I store a photo securely on disk in my database and only stream it out to an authenticated session?

  • Convert array of hashes to array of structs?

    - by keruilin
Let's say I have two objects: User and Race. User has two attributes: first_name, last_name. And Race has three attributes: course, start_time, end_time. Now let's say I create an array of hashes like this: user_races = races.map{ |race| {:user = race.user, :race = race} } How do I then convert user_races into an array of structs, keeping in mind that I want to be able to access the attributes of both user and race from the struct element?

  • Creating a short unique string for each unique long string

    - by king.net
I'm trying to create a url shortener system in c# and asp.net mvc. I know about hashtable and I know how to create a redirect system etc. The problem is indexing long urls in database. Some urls may have up to 4000 character length, and it seems it is a bad idea to index this kind of strings. The question is: How can I create a unique short string for each url? for example MD5 can help me? Is MD5 really unique for each string? NOTE: I see that Gravatar uses MD5 for emails, so if each email address is unique, then its MD5 hashed value is unique. Is it right? Can I use same solution for urls?
