• ActiveReports Conditional Formatting - Picture Visibility

  In ActiveReports, how can I change formatting based on values in the report data? Specifically, I want to show or hide pictures based on a value in the data. The report gets bound to a list of objects via a set to its DataSource property. These objects have a Condition property with values "Poor", "Normal", etc. I have some pictures in the report that correspond to the different conditions, and I want to hide all the pictures except for the one corresponding to the value. Should I subscribe to the Format event for the detail section? If so, how do I get to the "current record" data?

  I have a function that looks as follows: let isInSet setElems normalize p = normalize p |> (Set.ofList setElems).Contains This function can be used to quickly check whether an element is semantically part of some set; for example, to check if a file path belongs to an html file: let getLowerExtension p = (Path.GetExtension p).ToLowerInvariant() let isHtmlPath = isInSet [".htm"; ".html"; ".xhtml"] getLowerExtension However, when I use a function such as the above, performance is poor since evaluation of the function body as written in "isInSet" seems to be delayed until all parameters are known - in particular, invariant bits such as (Set.ofList setElems).Contains are reevaluated each execution of isHtmlPath. How can best I maintain F#'s succint, readable nature while still getting the more efficient behavior in which the set construction is preevaluated. The above is just an example; I'm looking for a general pattern that avoids bogging me down in implementation details - where possible I'd like to avoid being distracted by details such as the implementation's execution order since that's usually not important to me and kind of undermines a major selling point of functional programming.

• Need advice on speeding up tableViewCell photo loading performance

  I have around 20 tableview cells that each contain a number (2-5) thumbnail sized pictures (they are VERY small Facebook profile pictures, ex. http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-sf2p/hs254.snc3/23133_201668_2989_q.jpg). Each picture is an UIImageView added to the cell's contentview. Scrolling performance is poor, and measuring the draw time I've found the UIImage rendering is the bottleneck. I've researched/thought of some solutions but as I am new to iphone development I am not sure which strategy to pursue: preload all the images and retrieve them from disk instead of URL when drawing cells (I'm not sure if cell drawing will still be slow, so I want to hold off on the time investment here) Have the cells display a placeholder image from disk, while the picture is asynchronously loaded (this seems to be the best solution, but I'm currently not sure exactly how to do best do this) There's the fast drawing recommendation from Tweetie, but I don't know that will have much affect if it turns out my overhead is in network loading (http://blog.atebits.com/2008/12/fast-scrolling-in-tweetie-with-uitableview/) Thoughts/implementation advice? • Elisp performance on Windows and Linux

  I have the following dead simple elisp functions; the first removes the fill breaks from the current paragraph, and the second loops through the current document applying the first to each paragraph in turn, in effect removing all single line-breaks from the document. It runs fast on my low-spec Puppy Linux box using emacs 22.3 (10 seconds for 600 pages of Thomas Aquinas), but when I go to a powerful Windows XP machine with emacs 21.3, it takes almost an hour to do the same document. Also, with the new API and an FBML app. How does this exactly work? The documentation is really poor so I am confused when looking at the old wiki, and the new developer site. Apologies for being pretty vague, but I'm just generally confused with the lack of clear direction with the new API and help would be greatly appreciated. I'm simply just trying to create a call that prompts for the new style user permission dialog, and oncomplete calls another JS function.

• EnvDTE: ArgumentException when accessing the ActiveConfiguration

  Hello, I'm writing an addin for Visual Studio 2008. At some point in my code, I'm attempting to access the current active configuration for a project: var configName = _Project.ConfigurationManager.ActiveConfiguration.ConfigurationName; Sometimes, in some very obscure cases, the getter for ActiveConfiguration throws an ArgumentException. Nothing in the documentation says anything about this (but given the very poor quality of the documentation, it was to be expected), and the exception's message is not helping at all. Also, ConfigurationManager is an interface, and I don't know what's the real implementation behind it, so I can't simply disassemble it in Reflector to know the cause. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Add a delay to OnContactDown events for Surface controls

  We're using the Controls.PreviewContactDown, PreviewContactUp, and PreviewContactChanged events to capture tagged items being placed, removed, and moved on the Surface, which works great in the Simulator application that comes with the surface. On an actual Surface if you moved a tagged item too quickly the cameras actually lose focus of the tag, assume it was removed, and then re-capture it when it stops moving. That provides a pretty poor experience for our clients. What I'm proposing is a way to override or create a new event that would respond to tagged item events, but not fire the event handler until after a delay... i.e. if "ContactUp" is fired, wait 100ms and THEN execute the event handler. Ideally we'd just be able to use an alternate attached property to define these event handlers, i.e. <Panel local:TagDown="TagDownEventHandler" /> And if we could get it to use ICommand objects instead of event handlers that'd be even better.

  Hi, Is there any way to get taskbar's battery and phonesignal indicators icons and then draw into a picturebox or something? Why do I need this? I need all screen space available, so all forms are maximized and they cover up the windowsmobile taskbar. But, I have to display information about battery e phone signal strength in just a couple of forms. I know how to get their values (like systeminformation.phonesignalstrength), but what I want is the "current icon", so I don't need to worry about their values. It's just a visual information for the user. In last case, if this is not possible, how to get those icons from windowsmobile shell, so I'll draw them by my self, treating each differente status/values that they assume. (This is what I don't want to do!) Thanks in advance and sorry for my poor english.

• Multidimensional arrays in VB.NET 2010

  Is there any way to create a multidinensional array that contains arrays of different lengths (similar to nesting arrays of different lengths in python). Because if I were to declare a variable Dim accounts(2,2) As Integer all 1D arrays at each dimension have the same length. Is there any way to create an array so that this is not the case? e.g The above code would create an array like this: [[0,0],[0,0]] but would it be possible to create this: [[0,0],[0,0,0]] Apologies for the poor explanation but I cannot think of any better ways to explain.

  I'm doing a statistic job like this: SUM |COND1 |COND2 |... -------------------------- 100 |80 | 70 |... The SUM result is calculated from multiple tables, and the CONDs are subset of that. I wrote a sql like this: select tmp1.id,sum,cond1,cond2 as count from ( select id, count(*) as sum from table_1 group by table1.id) tmp1 left join ( select id, count(*) as cond1 from table1 where condition1 group by table1.id) tmp2 on tmp1.id=tmp2.id left join ( select id, count(*) as cond2 from table1 where condition2 group by table1.id) tmp3 on tmp1.id=tmp3.id the problem is that this is very poor efficiency, it will be better if i could use the result of tmp1, but i don't know how to do that. update: simplified the sql, what i mean is how to reuse the first select result of table_1

• Are ORM's counterproductive to OO design?

  In OOD, design of an object is said to be characterized by its identity and behavior. Having used OR/M's in the past, the primary purpose, in my opinion, revolves around the ability to store/retrieve data. That is to say, OR/M objects are not design by behavior, but rather data (i.e. database tables). Case and point: Many OR/M tools come with a point-to-a-database-table-and-click-object-generator. If objects are no longer characterized by behavior this will, in my opinion, muddy the identity and responsibility of the objects. Subsequently, if objects are not defined by a responsibility this could lend a hand to having tightly coupled classes and overall poor design. Furthermore, I would think that in an application setting, you would be heading towards scalability issues. So, my question is, do you think that ORM's are counterproductive to OO design? Perhaps the underlying question would be whether or not they are counterproductive to application development.

• Convert graph in to data points using Mechanical Turk?

  I looked around but did not see anyone using Mechanical Turk for this. I've heard of the service, but never used it before. I need to take the following graph and digitize it so I get a list of data points for each line (noting that there are two Y-axes, and thus depends on which line we are talking about). This is pretty time consuming for me, and I saw other posts on StackOverflow about digitizing software doing a poor job at this. Would Mechanical Turk be well suited to my task? • MySQL index cardinality - performance vs storage efficiency

  Say you have a MySQL 5.0 MyISAM table with 100 million rows, with one index (other than primary key) on two integer columns. From my admittedly poor understanding of B-tree structure, I believe that a lower cardinality means the storage efficiency of the index is better, because there are less parent nodes. Whereas a higher cardinality means less efficient storage, but faster read performance, because it has to navigate through less branches to get to whatever data it is looking for to narrow down the rows for the query. (Note - by "low" vs "high", I don't mean e.g. 1 million vs 99 million for a 100 million row table. I mean more like 90 million vs 95 million) Is my understanding correct? • Pool Billiard AI

  Im implementing a pool billiard game in Java and it all works fine. It is a multiplayer game, but nevertheless, it should also be possible to play it alone. For this purpose I'm trying to implement a simple KI. At the moment, the KI choose just randomly a direction and a random intensity of the impulse (don't know the correct english word for that). Of course this AI is very poor and unlikely to ever challenge a player. So i thought about improving the KI, but there are several hard to solve problems. First I thought of just choosing the nearest ball and to try to put it directly into the nearest hole. This isn't that bad, but if there other balls in the line between, it isn't really working anymore. Additionally this dosn't solve te problem of calculating the intensity of the impulse. So are there any general advice? Or any ideas? Best practices?

However, I have the following two problems: If I try to implement a double click event for richTextBox1, I can detect when a word is clicked, however that word is highlighted (selected), which I'd like to avoid. I can deselect it programmatically by selecting the end of the text, but that causes a flicker, which I would like to avoid. What ways are there to do this? The GetCharIndexFromPosition method returns the index of the character that is closest to the cursor. This means that if the only thing my RichTextBox contains is a word starting with a # then the cursor will be a hand no matter where on the rich text control it is. How can I make it so that it is only a hand when it hovers over an actual word or character that is part of a word I'm interested in? The implemented URL detection also partially suffers from this problem. If I enable detection of URLs and only write www.test.com in the rich text editor, the cursor will be a hand as long as it is on or below the link. It will not be a hand if it's to the right of the link however. I'm fine even with this functionality if making the cursor a hand if and only if it's on the text proves to be too difficult. I'm guessing I'll have to resort to some sort of Windows API calls, but I don't really know where to start. I am using Visual Studio 2008 and I would like to implement this myself. Update: The flickering problem would be solved if I could make it so that no text is selectable through double clicking, only through dragging the mouse cursor. Is this easier to achieve? Because I don't really care if one can select text or not by double clicking in this case.

  I need a light css editor with certain functions. Already downloaded and tried a few apps but still no luck, none of them fit my requirements. Actually, there is one, CssEdit (or TextMate), but unfortunately i'm a windows user... Already tried: built-in NetBeans IDE css editor (btw nice editor, the one i'm using now for css) IntelJ IDE (very good html and css editor, but using the entire ide just for this - that's crazy) ArduoCss (very buggy in win7 environment) Notepad Notepad++ (it rules, but as i said, i need something more functional for css editing) Style Master ( if i don't find anything else, probably i'll choose this one) Stylizer ( also might be my choice, but it's black interface kills me, also extremy noob-oriented, i even couldn't find a way to see the source code) Some of the features i am looking for: grouping by comments like here snippets autocomplete, if i type for instance f-s, it should recognize and expand it to "font-size" property color picker The editor must have at least the first feature that i listed above. • High density Silverlight charting control

  I've been looking into Silverlight charting controls to display a large number of samples, (~10,000 data points in five separate series - ~50k points all up). I have found the existing options produced by Dundas, Visifire, Microsoft etc to be extremely poor performers when displaying more than a few hundred data points. I believe the performance issues with existing chart controls is caused by the heavy use of vector graphics. Ergo one solution would be a client-side chart control that uses the WritableBitmap class to generate a raster chart. Before I fall too far down the wheel re-invention rabbit hole - has anyone found a third party or OSS control that will manage large numbers of data points on a sparkline?

  Hi - I'm trying to read an image file and scale it by multiplying each byte by a scale its pixel levels by some absolute factor. • rails using jruby 1.5 - slow!!

I'm currently using passenger with ree 1.8.7 in production for a rails 2.3.5 project using postgresql as a database. ab -n 10000 -c 100: 285.69 [#/sec] (mean) I read jruby should be the fastest solution, so I installed jruby-1.5.0.rc2 together with jdbc postgres adapter and glassfish. As the performance is really poor, I also started running my application using "jruby --server -J-Druby.jit.threshold=0 script/server -e production". Anyway, I only get ab -n 10000 -c 100: 43.88 [#/sec] (mean) Thread_safe! is activated in my rails config. Java seems to use all cores, cpu usage is around 350% (top). ruby -v: jruby 1.5.0.RC2 (ruby 1.8.7 patchlevel 249) (2010-04-28 7c245f3) (Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM 1.6.0_16) [amd64-java] I wonder what I'm doing wrong and how to get better performancre with jruby than with ree? • Is it worthwhile learning about Emacs? [closed]

  Hi there Some time ago, I've heard what a great tool Emacs can be. I've read some papers about it and some watched some video too. I've read that emacs is great not only for developers but for usual users too...so i decided to start learning how to use it and wok with it. The problem is that I'm a MS Windows user and I learn in my spare time PHP and C(I also did some products on those languages, but i still considering myself in learning stage). Another problem is that I learn alone (no friends around to ask/learn from them, programming related stuff). Can you give me some tips about how to use those type of tools(especially those written for gnu/unix) with "poor" GUI but rich features? Do you recommend to use the specific windows written applications only and forget about those which come from GNU?
