• Windows 7 Home Premium - Unable to View Chinese Characters Properly

  Is there a proper and permanent fix that will restore the display of Chinese Characters on a Windows 7 Home Premium Laptop computer? This problem has been occurring frequently now and a simple reboot no longer does the trick. The square boxes viewed on many applications and websites has been constantly bothering me and I wish to fix it asap. I have done a lot of research on it but have not been successful. Many responses were to install the language packs for Windows 7 Ultimate Users which apparently is not my case or to configure the "Region and Language" settings of the Control Panel, changing the system locale. Does anyone have any suggestions? All would be appreciated!

• Gnome keyboard shortcuts dysfunctional after waking up from sleep

  Hello, I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on my Thinkpad T61. Very often after the system woke up from sleep, all the gnome shortcuts went dead (no effect when key combinations pressed). Things like "Alt+F4, Alt+TAB" are dead; things like Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V are OK; buttons such as volume up/down also OK; I tried to Google for answers but wasn't lucky enough. Any idea how to solve it? Thanks! If it's not preventable, can I at least restore them without restarting the session?

• Best method(s) to backup VMs running on HyperV?

  We're in the middle of P2V'ing most of the network, so the current backup method is likely the worst - the backup agent is still installed on the guest OSs, and the backup device is dutifully pulling them onto tape, one file at a time. I suspect there's a clever way to script (PowerShell?) a suspend on the VMs, then backup of the .vhd files, and unsuspend the VMs. This seems like it would provide big speed benefits, while losing file-level restore (might be best for things like DCs and app servers). What methods/policies have you hammered out?

  After an unexpected server shutdown due to a power failure, I can no longer connect to the internal windows database MICROSOFT##SSEE which is hosting Central Admin for my SBS 2008 server. The log shows: Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 16. Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. [CLIENT: <named pipe>] I've tried to connect using the SQL Management studio (connecting to .pipemssql$microsoft##sseesqlquery) but no luck. The SQL Server Configuration Manager doesn't show a entry for 'Protocols for MICROSOFT##SSEE' (but shows it for 2 other database hosted on the same SQL server 2005 Express edition. I have tried to restore the master.ldf and mastlog.log files from a backup, but the issue persists.

• Language bar switched input types on me.

  I learned Japanese, but I'm not native to Japan, so I never had a Japanese keyboard. I used to use the language bar to go back and forth between English and Japanese, simply typing the words in romaji and having windows convert it into either hiragana, katakana and sometimes Kanji. Suddenly, my input type changes. I am no longer able to simply type in English, it changed my keyboard into a native Japanese keyboard, and what's worse it doesn't even allow me to write in hiragana, which I would need way more than katakana. Can anyone tell me how to restore it to the old setting where I simply chose what the output dialect would be, and typed the words phonetically in english and have it translate the sounds for me into japanese characters?

• Clone a Red Hat RAID as part of a disaster recovery plan

  I am looking for recommendations to clone a Red Hat mirrored raid to a single hard drive located in the same machine. The idea is if the servers hardware ever has an issue we have a similar hardware machine ready to go. All we would have to do is pop in the cloned drive. If the servers RAID ever failed we could just switch to the single drive to maintain uptime and restore the original configuration on the spare server with a backup. This is a restaurant and they are open 7 days a week. We do have time from 12:am to 9:00am to perform the necessary steps for a clone and we talking about under 10 Gigs of information. There is a database on the server. I have looked into Rsync and Clonezilla. But I am just not confident either is capable of completing the task I want. Looking for some suggestions and possibly a step by step if you could be so kind.

• Can Windows XP remember file icon position?

  Windows allows you to arrange icons however you like in a window. However after some time when I go back to the window, it has forgotten the icon positions and has completely rearranged the icons. Is there a way to preserve the icon positions? In the previous version of Windows I used, this would happen on rare occasions (about 6 months) and it might only move a couple of icons. Now it is happening practically every day and it is every single icon. Attempts to rearrange them manually are futile and it is increasingly maddening. Searching Google, I have found a number of programs that allow you to save and restore icon position on the desktop. But, this is just a regular folder window so I am not sure if any of those would even work. Some details: Windows XP SP 3 running in Parallels 5 virtual machine Auto Arrange and Align to Grid are NOT turned on Fresh OS install and only setting icon positions in one window

  After a TimeMachine restore; office 2011 is having kittens over permissions it would seem. Having attempted a 'repair' out of Disk Utility, am still seeing: 'there is a problem with the Office database' upon startup. After which Word/Excel work without issues. Outlook on the other hand won't even start. Given the obvious message here "You do not have write access to the Outlook application folder" - where is the DB located to check?! Ideas ? Thank you

  When I choose the "Create System Image" option in Windows Backup & Restore, it says that it will take system image of my C:\ and V:\ partitions. My Windows 7 is installed on V: and I use C:\ for taking backups. Now, my question is, is it possible to ignore taking backup of C:\ partition? I only want to get a copy of system image of V: By the way, I used to have Vista on my C:\ partition sometime ago and I formatted it recently to use the partition for taking backups.

  I have a situation here, is kind of weird. Situation as below: If i enable the 'Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 27CC' , then my pc will not be able to read any USB stick/pendrive, but usb port work fine with keyboard and mouse. If I disable the device driver, then all kind of pendrive can be read. Below is What i have done : 1) try the same pendrive on other pc, it work like charm. 2) try others pendrive on issue pc, same problem, but it work fine in others pc. 3) try all the port, including the port that connected to mouse n keyboard. 4) update the driver version. 5) restore default setting of usb in bios Please help to solve these issue if anyone experience it before. • Automatically connect to 3G dialup connection

  I have a notebook with an internal 3G modem (a HUAWEI Mobile Connect) which appears to the system as a dialup modem. When I want to connect to the Internet, I need to open the charms bar, click settings, network, the modem and "connect" to open the dialup dialog on the desktop. When the connection is interrupted for some reason, I need to repeat these steps. Is there a way to configure Windows 8 to automatically (and preferably silently in the background) connect with this modem at system startup and automatically restore the connection should it get interrupted? As an operating system which is developed for mobile devices, I would expect it to be able to somehow be able to manage a always-on 3g connection.

  Before evaluating Symantec/Norton Ghost to image partitions, I have a couple of questions about using this tool: In the product page, it only mentions Windows: Can Norton image Linux partitions as well? Can I burn an ISO to create/recover images? The ISO's I found seem only able to restore an image but not create one. Does it mean that images can only be created from within a running Windows? For Windows partitions: Does it support both regular and Server versions? Acronis doesn't image Server partitions in the regular version When restoring an image, does Norton give the option of including/excluding the MBR? Thank you.

• Time difference between servers after disaster recovery

  We are running an old training system based on Windows Server 2003 and XP-clients. The solution is rather simple with four servers, two of them beeing DC:s. Everything is preconfigured and that goes for backup scheme as well. The backup software is Symantec BackupExec 2010. The scheme is a standard GF-F-S routine with full backups running once a week on Sundays. The other six days run differential backups. Now let's say in a worst case scenario, a server crashes on Saturday and we have to restore it from backup. The last backup will then be six days old and thus it will come online with six days old configurations. Will this pose a problem for the other servers or will the recovered server "get in line" eventually?

• Windows 7 Start Menu Items Missing

  If I click the start menu - All Programs almost all my installed programs seem to be missing from the start menu despite some of them being on the initial regulalry used screen. As far as I can see this has happened within the last week possibly after windows updates installed. Does anyone else have this issue? Anyone know a fix? I have looked in all the locations I can think of for start menu items and can't see them anywhere so it does actually look like they have been removed. I tried as system restore that didn't work.

  How To Cancel Pending Windows 7 Updates? The key is pending. The shutdown button has the windows update symbol meaning that there are updates that were selected to be installed which were download and will be installed upon shutdown. The only thing is that my machine will no longer boot if I let it install those updates! They are incompatible with a driver needed in the system and I did not found out until too late. The system admin used a recovery disk to get back to the previous restore point, only the updates are now pending, so I need to cancel those before the machine shutdowns next.

• How to efficiently dump a huge MySQL innodb database?

  I got an Ubuntu 10.04 production MySQL database server where total size of database is 260 GB while size of root partition is itself 300 GB where DB is stored, essentially means around 96% of / is full and there's no space left for storing dump/backup etc. No other disk is attached to server as of now. My task is to migrate this database to other server sitting in different datacenter. Question is how to do that efficiently with minimum downtime? I'm thinking in line of: Request to attach an extra drive to server and take a dump in that drive. Transfer dump to new server, restore it and make new server slave of existing one to keep data in sync When migration is needed, break replication, update slave config to accept read/write requests and make old server read-only so it won't entertain any write requests and tell app developers to update there config with new IP address for db. What's your suggestions to improve this or any alternate better approach for this task?

• Upgrade no raid server to raid

  I have just learned that our PDC has a single drive with 2 partitions. I also know that this drive has bad blocks as recorded in the event log. What I would like to do is to convert this to a RAID solution with a nice balance between economy and performance. I will admit that I have only configured servers with RAID from scratch, and have no experience upgrading an existing system into a RAID system. In fact, I'm not sure it is even possible. Since this is the PDC for 350+ workstations downtime is important. I'd like to hear from other System Administators how they would tackle this and their recommendations for all devices. At this time it seems to me that I can replace the existing drive and then restore from backup or install a controller, drives, configure the RAID an basically start from scratch.   Hi, I have a system that has to be formatted often because of the specific use of it (Use it in internet cafe). I have to install the drivers and apps each time. That is a time consuming and cumbersom task for me. I want to install windows, drivers, apps etc. once and create a backup of the entire C:\ drive, and keep it in a linux partition so that I can restore the OS with all the apps & drivers ready to go! I have ubuntu live CD with me and I have created a linux partition (ext4) in the HDD. My question is: How can I create an ISO image of the C:\ drive (ntfs disk) in Ubuntu and store it in the linux partition?

• What is the best way to back up dedicated web server? (Amanda versus Rsync)

  Hello everyone, I am trying to establish valid back ups for my web server. It is a linux box on CentOS. I have asked around and "rsync" was suggested by some of the server fault community. However, my coworker at work says that this is really only moving over the physical files and isn't really a usable "snapshot." He suggested using "amanda" and that this did full server snapshots that are more what I am accustomed to. I know at my company we have virtual machines that we take snapshots of and we can restore everything back to just as they were with little effort and little downtime. Is this possible with rsync? Or would I need to create a new server and then migrate the files back and do various configurations? I think I prefer being able to just reset everything to a point in time. Forgive my ignorance, Back ups are something that I have never really had to worry about before.

• Updating to Exchange 2013 - any way to do it now?

  Exchange 2013 is out, available for some epople already. Got if from the VLC Center, now trying to get an upgrade path that works for some customers. Problem: There is no upgrade. It is "install on new Server, move mailboxes. This means coexistence with Exchagne 2010 for the time to move the Mailbox. Sadly the only compatible Exchange is Exchange 2010 Sp3 - which is not going to be bout for quite some time. Any way to still do an update? Backup, restore to new Server? Any beta of the SP that is good enough to ONLY move the mailboxes? I do not care about the rest - this really is "install Exchange 2013, move mailboxes, UNINSTALL 2010". I am quite - ah - unhappy that at the end the only one who will be able to intall 2013 are new companies right now.

• Is there DBus command to set position of KDE panel?

  I have single vertical KDE panel. When I switch from single monitor X screen back to triple monitor X screen (with xrandr) my KDE panel ends up on the right edge of middle monitor, instead of right edge of right monitor. Also, many windows are in wrong place after the switch, but I have a script which restores geometry of all windows (as is used to be in triple monitor state before I switched to single monitor mode), so this is not a problem. Unfortunately, it does not work for KDE panel - it stays in the wrong place. I guess I need to use DBus to restore KDE panel position (programmatically move it to right edge of right screen), I tried googling, but it seems it is not very well documented. Is there DBus command to set position of KDE panel?

  Related to my older question: Get xp product key from boot Thanks for the help on that one. So, in the end, i couldn't get into my harddrive because i didn't have the available hardware to hook it up to another computer to get the old activation key. So, instead, i entered another activation key (i know, naughty) in hopes that there would be a way to retrieve the old one, restore point or something afterwords. What legal ways can I get xp re-activated after a repair when I don't have any record of my activation key? for those who think im just trying to crack it, your wrong: Got a virus, which stopped me from getting into windows Got AVG Anti Virus, which stopped me from getting into safe mode Got a 2 year old, who decided to rip-off and chew my activation sticker on my computer (nice one).   Twice I had to reinstall because Adobe 9 installed for a second time without me requesting or being asked to. There is a Adobe folder and an Adobe(2) folder. Installed were Adobe.com; AIS; Reader 9 and Active X. The system crashes. I can't do anything. In safe mode, can't uninstall or system restore. Can't click on anything in regular environment. Not only will I start looking for alternative pdf reader, and if I can't view a site without active X so be it. But if I do decide to re-install Adobe, HOW DO I CONFIGURE IT TO NOT UPDATE AUTOMATICALLY???? Day and a half to re-install everything.

• Restoring file properties but not the complete files, from backup

  While copying data from my old storage on a Linux computer to the new (linux-based) NAS, I accidentially failed with getting the properties (most important: the modify dates) along to the new location. I also continued to use/modify the files at the new location and hence, cannot just copy it all over again. What I would like to do is a diff between files in the old vs. the new storage, and for those being identical, restore the properties from Linux storage to the NAS storage files. Is there a clever way such as a script or a tool to do this? I could either run it on the Linux box or in worst case from a remote Windows computer. Grateful for any suggestions. /Jon
