Your User Experience Is I've been tweeting to #GamifyOracle for a while but I'll try to use this blog to put a little of my own thoughts on the matter together.  In the meantime, I spoke at the GSummit in June on the things we're working on and I'll be leading a workshop and speaking on Enterprise Gamification at the Enterprise Gamification Summit in September.  Oracle peeps, let me know if you are interested in attending, since we can get a group discount for the workshop/summit.  We're also planning to conduct some more research on gamification in the enterprise space at Oracle OpenWorld this October.  In the meantime, let me know if there are issues you are interested in and I'll try to put some things together here.  I'd love to know who all is working on gamification in Oracle--I know some of you but I'm sure there are others!

• Text on a model

  I am trying to put some text on a Model and I want it to be dynamic. Did some research and came up with drawing the text on the texture and then set it on the model. • JEditorPane on Steroids with Nashorn

  Continuing from Embedded Nashorn in JEditorPane, here is the same JEditorPane on steroids with Nashorn, in the context of some kind of CMS backend system: Above, you see heavy reusage of NetBeans IDE editor infrastructure. Parts of it are with thanks to Steven Yi, who has done some great research in this area. Code completion, right-click popup menu, line numbering, editor toolbar, find/replace features, block selection, comment/uncomment features, etc, etc, etc, all the rich editor features from NetBeans IDE are there, within a plain old JEditorPane. And everything is externally extensible, e.g., new actions can be registered by external modules into the right-click popup menu or the editor toolbar or the sidebar, etc. For example, here's code completion (Ctrl-Space): It even has the cool new feature where if you select a closing brace and the opening brace isn't in the visible area, a rectangular popup appears at the top of the editor, to show how the current piece of code begins: The only thing I am missing is code folding! I wish that would work too, still figuring it out. What's also cool is that this is a Maven project. • xubuntu 12.04 screen regularly stops refreshing, refreshing resumes after un-/re-maximizing a window

  My screen frequently stops completely refreshing. I can make it resume refreshing by un-maximizing/re-maximize a window or by switching workspace (the un-/re-maximizing works every time. Switching workspace sometimes has to be done a couple of times). The immediate impression is that the system is frozen: there is apparently no reaction to anything I do but interestingly window title bar will change, if I switch application with (i.e alt+tab or browse through folders) I saw an identical issue in ubuntu 10.04, though a lot less frequent, I never saw this in ubuntu 12.04 (which I have been using the last 4-5 months). After switching to Xubuntu I'm seeing this again and more frequently. The specific reason I'm not sure this is a bug: I installed gnome-control-center which dragged in tons of packages. This was while trying to fix dual-screen setup. I believe the issue surfaced after this. I later meticulously removed every package from this batch (purge) in the hope that every setting would also be removed. But the issue has persisted. Another issue happened at the same time, it may be totally unrelated but it feels as if it is the same basic issue: the screen resolution of the greeter became less than the expected 1680x1050 and often after login there's just a blank and totally unresponsive wallpaper without panel so I have to force reboot. When the login is successful it's very clear that it works hard to determine the correct resolution which is achieved after a few blink to black screens. My questions: 1) Is this a settings issue or a bug? 2) How do I begin to research the issue - could I perhaps some way reset xubuntu/xfce to default. 3) If this is a bug where would be the most appropriate place report this? • How to model the components of a non Information System?

  So I am working on a project that's related to the Kernel code(specifically related to the TCP/IP stack of the kernel). I need to build some models to describe the functionality and components of my system. Initially I thought about Class Diagram, it can describe the general architecture of my system but it doesn't make sense since my code is VERY structured(written in standard C). I also thought about DFDs, they'd describe the processes of my system, and how the data is flowing. But they contain something which doesn't really fit in; data-storages. I have no databases here(at all). For the functionality, other team members suggested using Activity and Sequence diagrams, which is kinda okay with me, but what about the system components? So basically my question is; I want to describe the components of my system; what do you suggest as a meaningful diagram to follow? (Again, the project is a research low-level systems-oriented project with almost no user-interface at all)

• Is it worth replacing mouse by standalone trackpad for heavy code-editing? [on hold]

  I recently got more interested in improving my tools, workspace and worflow. The first sting came with a sore finger due to a crappy keyboard, and then after some research I fell in love with the "mechanical keyboard is what you need" doctrine, bought one (cherry MX Brown if you're curious), and am very happy with the results. Currently I am replacing my previous text editor (Geany) with Sublime Text 3, and am also very happy and feeling much more powerful and professional :) Well, but while I re-read all the ancient debates about VIM vs whatever-else, the following excerpt from a blog post got me thinking again about the mouse vs keyboard, and the "moving around from the very home row" (in VIM) versus gesturing away with the tiny and unstable mouse cursor: Reaching for a mouse may indeed slow you down, but developers are commonly on machines where the trackpad is a micro-hand movement away. Most novice programmers can click on a character on screen faster than an expert Vimmer can type 20jFp; or LkEEE or /word or any other nasty way Vimmers have to use. The point of a mouse is to make arbitrary on screen jumps efficient, and it’s very good at doing that. Don’t you ever think you can beat a mouse. Well, although there is some bitterness in this statement, it makes a lot of sense, and EVEN MORE if you consider your direct input to be a TRACKPAD conveniently placed in front of your spacebar (which oddly is where I like to put my mouse, rotated 90° ccw, due to a serious tendonitis in my right shoulder, already healed, but you knod...). So, the question is: Has anyone replaced mouse by a standalone trackpad, to work in code editing in a desktop machine (that is, with a sandalone keyboard)? Was it worth the change?

• Have you Been Missing the 'About This Record' Functionality on the Customer Form...?

  Do you have fond memories of the 'Help -> About This Record'  functionality that used to be available in the old Customer form - when it was a form, and not a java html screen?  Back in Release 11i, we had the ability to identify when the customer record had last been updated and by whom.  When some forms were replaced by Java HTML screens, you could identify some of this information via the 'About this Page' hyperlink at the bottom left hand corner of the HTML page.  You could enable this by enabling the FND: Diagnostics profile option, but many customers found this had an adverse effect on performance and additionally was not user-friendly.   Our customers tell us that this feature was widely used to identify owner/update information in many business processes, including auditing, customer entry/update, research and testing.  There have been various efforts to revert this feature by customising java pages, but this was not fully successful in some cases.  Oracle Support is happy to announce that this functionality has now been included in the Customer screens in Release 12.2 onwards.   You will be able to query the record history at customer level, at site level, at site address levels and for all tabs relating to the customer. Simply click on the 'Record History' icon, available in the Record History column on a summary screen, or via the same icon on the individual detail screen to display the following information: Last Updated Date: Last Updated By Creation Date Created By Last Update Login

• Influence Maps for Pathfinding?

  I'm taking the plunge and am getting into game dev, it's been going well but I've got stuck on a problem. I have a maze that is 100x100 with 0,1 to indicate if its a path or a wall. Within the maze I have 300 or so enemies and a player. The outcome I'm looking for is all the enemies work their way towards the player position. Originally I did this using an A* path finding algorithm but with 300 enemies it was taking forever to path find each one individually. After some research I found that an influence map / collaborative diffusion would be the best way to go. But I'm having a real hard time working out how this is actually done. Firstly.. How do you create a influence map? From what I understand each of my walls with have a scent of 0 so that makes them impassable.. then basically a radial effect from my player position to each other cell (So my player starts at 100 and then going outwards from that each other cell will be reduced value) Is that correct? If so,.. How would you do that (Math magic?) My next problem is if that is correct how would my "enemies" stop from getting stuck if they have gone down the wrong way? As say if my player was standing on the otherside of a wall if the enemy is just looking for larger numbers wont it keep getting stuck? I'm doing this in JavaScript so performance is key. Thanks for any help! EDIT: Or if anyones got a better solution? I've been reading about navmeshs, steering pathing, pre calculating all paths on load etc etc

• How to make backlight work on Acer 5732z?

  I want to run 12.04 on my Acer Aspire 5732z. I know from research that these computers have issues with the backlight on Ubuntu. So I tried a couple of solutions: The sudo lightdm restart method. I get no change at all. The sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=30 method. This so far has been the most effective. I first tried it in the F1 console, right away I get the screen back, problem is going back to the desktop it goes back to being black. So I tried it from a terminal window and it works as well but as soon as I unplug my external monitor the screen turns black again and doesn't come back. If I plug the monitor back in the screen stays black and the only thing I see is the mouse pointer. From here I go back into console (which I am able to see) and reboot from there. The sudo sed -i 's/GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""/GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=Linux"/g /etc/default/grub method. This one I got no instant change and after reboot still no change. I'm open to pretty much any suggestions you may have.

• IIS 7 SSO stops working during high CPU load? [migrated]

  On our IIS7 site (Windows 2008 Server), we have set up single sign-on (SSO). It seems to work fine most of the time, but when the CPU load becomes high, SSO authentication completely stops working. I did some research and tried this suggestion to increase the max number of worker processes in the default app pool, but the increase did not help. Some details: The site is a WordPress blog. The server has plenty of RAM (2 GB) and free disk space. SSO is achieved by putting a copy of the WordPress login page (wp-login.php) into a subfolder below the root that has anonymous authentication disabled, and then redirecting the browser to it. This was the recommendation of Microsoft given to our consultants. To increase CPU load for testing, I have three scripts hit the home page simultaneously, over and over. This drives CPU to 100%. When these scripts are running, SSO authentication simply doesn't happen. As soon as I stop the scripts, SSO works again. (I should mention that the SSO problem also happens when many users visit the site at once....) The WordPress database process (mysqld) is not stressed at all by the scripts. I would be happy to provide further diagnostics. Any help appreciated!

• Dropbox fails to install on Ubuntu 13.10

  I've done some research and it seems Dropbox has some problems with the status icon on Ubuntu 13.10, but I can't even manage to install it. The very first time, I installed nautilus-dropbox from the app center on a freshly installed Saucy, but I couldn't see the status icon and clicking the app icon wouldn't help, so I uninstalled and rebooted. The second and third time, the app just freezed at about 75% while installing from app manager, so I had to shut down the computer and uninstall. Next I tried to install dropbox from the .deb (from website): it installed (the launcher?) from app manager, then the dialog prompted me to start dropbox and finally to download the official daemon, but the download freezed at 0% and made everything else buggy/laggy (probably also because I restarted nautilus, as required, at that point). After a purge and clean from terminal, some icons and this file (which I suspect is somehow responsible, but of course is locked) are still present on my computer. Can anyone help me figure how how to install it? How could I remove that configuration file so I can give it a last shot?

• Quadcopters Play Catch [Video]

  Working like a group of hive-minded bees, these quadcopters come off as almost playful with their ball throwing antics. Courtesy of the folks at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich’s Institute for Dynamic Systems and Control, we’re treated to a video of three quadcopters playing catch in the research facility’s Flying Machine Area. They explain the processes demonstrated in the video: This video shows three quadrocopters cooperatively tossing and catching a ball with the aid of an elastic net. To toss the ball, the quadrocopters accelerate rapidly outward to stretch the net tight between them and launch the ball up. Notice in the video that the quadrocopters are then pulled forcefully inward by the tension in the elastic net, and must rapidly stabilize in order to avoid a collision. Once recovered, the quadrotors cooperatively position the net below the ball in order to catch it. Because they are coupled to each other by the net, the quadrocopters experience complex forces that push the vehicles to the limits of their dynamic capabilities. • Rebuilding a Mac Mini (early 2009) --- Update

  A couple of months ago I rebuilt the family’s Mac Mini (you can read the details in this post).  Things had gone pretty smoothly until a few weeks ago.  That’s when my wife mentioned that different applications would spontaneously crash. She kept track for a few days, and it turned out to be any or all of the applications that she uses (Safari, Quicken, Entourage, etc.) . I did some online research and didn’t really find too much – but then how do you do a proper Google search for “Mac OS 10.5.8 applications crash”.  The best suggestion seemed to be issues around 10.5.8, where people suggested that you go back to a previous version (something like 10.5.6).  The only way to do that is to completely reinstall the OS – which is what I had just done. SO, instead of doing that, I decided to just reapply the 10.5.8 update by downloading it from Apple (http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update ).  I had installed the updates after the rebuild through the Apple Update mechanism built into OS X.  I thought maybe the combo update would reinstall some corrupted file (or something). I did this about a week ago and sure enough, we’ve had one crash this week with the same usage patterns as before.  I still have no idea what was causing the crashes, but at this point, I’m just going to declare it fixed and move on.

• What sorts of tools make a Django Developer valuable? [closed]

  I am a Django Consultant and I want to increase the value that I provide to clients. My first question was an epic failure according to the FAQ. So I'll try again before I delete it. What types of tools should a Django developer have in his tool belt to increase the value to the client? Would a collection of project templates be useful? Are there open-source project templates available that can be forked and altered? Is there a proper way to configure templates to include dependencies for certain types of projects? What about deployment scripts using tools like Puppet or Chef? Does it make a lot of sense to fork Django apps on GitHub and make contributions to open source projects there? Would clients percieve extra value in programmers that are contributing to open source projects? Are there industry best practices for implementing continuous integration in a Django project? I want the answer to be open ended, as I'm at the beginning of my research. I am curious to know what sorts of tools other Django consultants use on a daily and per-project basis, and how they use them.

• 1360x768x32 Resolution in Windows 8 in VirtualBox

  My Lenovo ThinkPad's built-in screen maxes at 1366x768x32. I wanted to use that same resolution with Windows 8 Developer Preview inside of VirtualBox. So, what did I do? Downloaded the latest build of VirtualBox v4.1.6 (because it supports Windows 8 x64) Installed Windows 8 Developer Preview in VirtualBox as I did earlier this year. Installed Guest Additions. Ran the CustomVideoMode described in this blog post. …and quickly found out that I didn’t have the option to use 1366x768x32 inside of VirtualBox despite using the following command: VBoxManage.exe setextradata  "[Virtual Machine Name]" CustomVideoMode1 1920x1080x32   So how do you fix it? If you do a little research on this resolution, then you will find it is a non-standard resolution. Even if you run the command: VBoxManage.exe setextradata "[Virtual Machine Name]" CustomVideoMode1 1366x768x32 It will still not show that resolution inside of VirtualBox. You can fix this easily by using the following command as shown below: VBoxManage.exe setextradata "[Virtual Machine Name]" CustomVideoMode1 1360x768x32 I hope that you noticed the command used the resolution of 1360 instead of 1366. Now if you go to your display option for Windows 8 inside of Virtualbox then you can select that resolution. Anyways, I hope this helps someone with a similar problem. • Majoring in computer science, but i'm not to sure I'm in the right field [closed]

  Throught out my high school years and first year in college, I never thought of studying computer science. I studied biology and chemistry during my first year, and I didn't like the research, nor any type of medical professionals. So I took an introductory CS course, and loved the diverse roles this field can have. So I declare CS as my major. I finished first, and second year CS courses. Then now, I'm doing my co-op(intern) as a web developer. During my first and second year, I was always just an average student. My grades is around low B. But I put so much effort to understand my course' materials. I see many brilliants peers who not only excel at what they do, but have the passion. So I always doubt myself if I don't belong in this field. I'm not good at math, I usually get Cs on my math courses. My internship (a corporate developer job) is okay. But doesn't want to work like this after my graduation). Some aspects of CS that I like is HCI. In my experience in programming, and group projects, I enjoyed designing User interface, and thinking of user experience. I'm also thinking of taking some psychology courses.. I would appreciate any criticism, or advices.

• External monitor on old Dell 700m?

  Okay, linux noob. I installed 10.04 on an old Dell 700m in hopes of using it as a media center device. That seems to work great, except now it won't output to the external monitor. VGA cable works fine, TV recognizes other computers fine, it's the laptop that won't output. Turns out that the 700m, unlike every other computer out there, doesn't have a Fn hotkey to switch monitors. The only way to do it in Windows was to go through the Control Panel. In Ubuntu, though, the Monitor setup won't detect or recognize any monitors. The laptop display works fine, but I can't adjust or add anything. I did a little research and found suggestions for older Ubuntu builds involving the xorg.conf. I tried one out, in spite of my unfamiliarity, and it's screwed the whole display big time. I can fix that with a clean reinstall, that's no problem, but I'm cautious about editing xorg again. Any suggestions? Thank you!

• What guidelines should be followed when implementing third-party tracking pixels?

  Background I work on a website that gets a fair amount of traffic, and as such, we have implemented different tracking pixels and techniques across the site for various specific reasons. Because there are many agencies who are sending traffic our way through email campaigns, print ads and SEM, we have agreements with a variety of different outside agencies for tracking these page hits. Consequently, we have tracking pixels which span the entire site, as well as some that are on specific pages only. We have worked to reduce the total number of pixels available on any one page, but occasionally the site is rendered close to unusable when one of these third-party tracking pixels fails to load. This is a huge difficulty on parts of the site where Javascript is needed for functionality built into the page, but is unable to initialize until a 404 is returned on the external tracking pixel. (Sometimes up to 30 seconds later) I have spent some time attempting to research how other firms deal with this sort of instability with third-party components, but have come up a bit short. The plan currently is to implement our own stop-gap method to deal with these external outages, but rather than reinventing the wheel, we wanted to find out how this is dealt with on other sites. Question Is there a good set of guidelines that should be followed when implementing third-party tracking pixels? I would love to see some white papers or other written documents about how other people have dealt with this issue.

• How can I reduce the amount of time it takes to fully regression test an application ready for release?

  An app I work on is being developed with a modified version of scrum. If you are not familiar with scrum, it's just an alternative approach to a more traditional watefall model, where a series of features are worked on for a set amount of time known as a sprint. The app is written in C# and makes use of WPF. We use Visual C# 2010 Express edition as an IDE. If we work on a sprint and add in a few new features, but do not plan to release until a further sprint is complete, then regression testing is not an issue as such. We just test the new features and give the app a good once over. However, if a release is planned that our customers can download - a full regression test is factored in. In the past this wasn't a big deal, it took 3 or 4 days and the devs simply fix up any bugs found in the regression phase, but now, as the app is getting larger and larger and incorporating more and more features, the regression is spanning out for weeks. I am interested in any methods that people know of or use that can decrease this time. At the moment the only ideas I have are to either start writing Unit Tests, which I have never fully tried out in a commercial environment, or to research the possibilty of any UI Automation API's or tools that would allow me to write a program to perform a series of batch tests. I know literally nothing about the possibilities of UI automation so any information would be valuable. I don't know that much about Unit testing either, how complicated can the tests be? Is it possible to get Unit tests to use the UI? Are there any other methods I should consider? Thanks for reading, and for any advice in advance.

• How to force ADF to speak your language (or any common language)

  When I started working for Oracle, one of the first tasks I was given was to contribute some content to a great ADF course Frank and Chris are building. Among other things, they asked me to work on a module about Internationalization. While doing research work, I unearthed a little gem I had overlooked all those years. JDeveloper, as you may know, speaks your language - as long as your language is English, that is. Oracle ADF, on the other hand, is a citizen of the world. It is available in more than 25 different languages. But while this is a wonderful feature for end users, it is rather cumbersome for developers. Why is that? Have you ever tried to search the OTN forums for a solution with a non-English error message as your query? I have, once. But how can you force ADF to use English for its logging operations? Playing with your system settings will not help, unfortunately. By default, ADF will output its error messages in the selected locale for the operating system account the application server runs on. The only way to change this behavior is to pass initialization parameters to the JVM used by the application server. It is even possible to specify the language and country/region separately. In the example below, we choose English and the United States respectively. -Duser.language=en -Duser.country=US In the case of WebLogic Server, it is possible to add such parameters in setDomainEnv.sh (or .cmd) to apply the settings to all the managed servers present on a node. • Resume on 30 Days of SharePoint

  Dear readers, as you might have noticed... It was an organisational desaster on my end! Even though I continued my studies and research on Microsoft SharePoint 2013 during the last 30 days, I wasn't able to write an article a day to keep you posted on my progress. Nonetheless, I gathered a good number of additional blogs, mainly SharePoint MVP sites, and online forums which will be helpful in the next couple of weeks while I'm actually going to develop a C#-based client which will enable an existing 'legacy' application to SharePoint as a document management system (DMS) besides other already existing solutions. Finding excuses Well, no. Not really. I simply didn't block any or enough time every day to write down my progress during my own challenge. My log book on learning about SharePoint stands at 41 hours and 15 minutes during this month. Which means that I spent an average of more than 1 hour per day on getting into SharePoint. I know that might sound a little bit low but also keep in mind that I went for the challenge on top of my daily job and private responsibilities. During the same period there had been two priority 0 incidents from clients - external root cause - which took presedence over this leisure project. More to come Anyway, it was a first trial and despite the low level of reporting on my blog, I'm confident about what I learned during the last 30 days, and I'm ready to implement the client's requirements. At least, I would say that I have a better understanding about the road map or the path to walk during the next month. As time and secrecy allows I'm going to note down some bits and pieces... During the process of development, I'm going to 'cheat' on the challenge summary article and add links to those new entries. Just for the sake of completeness. Next challenge? Hmm, there had been ideas during the last meetup of the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community (MSCC) regarding certifications in IT and eventually we might organise some kind of a study group for specific exams, most probably Microsoft exams towards MCSD Web Developer or Windows Developer.

• How to troubleshoot GPU freezes?

  So in advance I'll just say I am a total linux newbie, so be kind. I just downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 and this is my first experience with Linux. I enjoy it so far and actually enjoy it except for when my computer freezes. This has been quite often so far. I've done a little research and it seems my problem is with the GPU. When it does freeze I can move the cursor but cannot click on anything. I also cannot run Alt+F2 xkill. So my only previous experience has been with Windows and I would normally solve an issue like this with Ctrl+Alt+Delete and just shut down the offending program. I do not know how to do this in Ubuntu and not even sure this would even work. Please help me if you can, how do I deal with a freeze without having to resort to a hard shutdown, I cannot seem to run the computer over one hour without experiencing this issue. I tried accessing my GRUB menu on startup but I can't even seem to do that. Also the only real program I have been running whenever this happens seems to be Firefox. Thank you, appreciate any help.
