• What should I know before starting my first consulting project?

  I just got a job for a small project. I have all the relevant skills and knowledge to complete the project, but I am concerned about getting screwed over because this is my first time working on a consultant basis. We have already agreed on an hourly wage that I'm happy with, so that's not an issue. I'm just worried that since this is my first time working on my own, I'm going to make some mistakes that could be easily avoided if I had someone give me advice beforehand. This is what I already know to do/not do: -Get everything in writing -Limit the scope of the project. Once I start the actually coding, all features should be frozen. -Make sure to communicate constantly with my client. In addition he wants an max hourly cap. What is a good way to come up with one? What else do I need to know?

• Social Media JSR 357 NOT approved by Executive Committee

  JSR 357 (Social Media API) has not passed the initial ballot which means, according to the JCP rules, that "the JSR submitter(s) who may revise the JSR and resubmit it within 14 days". Given the comments associated with the negative votes, it may be challenging for the submitters to address the concerns about the scope assessed by many as being too wide. Standardization is a difficult task and the JCP (the Executive Committee in fact) played its role by pointing out the challenges ahead of such a JSR as it was envisioned by its submitters, and thus the risk of never completing. If anything this proves that the JCP is working as expected. For those disappointed that Java will not get a standard "Social Media API" (for now at least), let me remind you of the recent open-sourcing of DaliCore.

• MVVM and service pattern

  I'm building a WPF application using the MVVM pattern. Right now, my viewmodels calls the service layer to retrieve models (how is not relevant to the viewmodel) and convert them to viewmodels. I'm using constructor injection to pass the service required to the viewmodel. It's easily testable and works well for viewmodels with few dependencies, but as soon as I try to create viewModels for complex models, I have a constructor with a LOT of services injected in it (one to retrieve each dependencies and a list of all available values to bind to an itemsSource for example). I'm wondering how to handle multiple services like that and still have a viewmodel that I can unit test easily. I'm thinking of a few solutions: Creating a services singleton (IServices) containing all the available services as interfaces. Example: Services.Current.XXXService.Retrieve(), Services.Current.YYYService.Retrieve(). That way, I don't have a huge constructor with a ton of services parameters in them. Creating a facade for the services used by the viewModel and passing this object in the ctor of my viewmodel. But then, I'll have to create a facade for each of my complexe viewmodels, and it might be a bit much... What do you think is the "right" way to implement this kind of architecture ?

• Is spreading code with refactoring comments a good idea?

  I am working on a "spaghetti-code" project, and while I am fixing bugs and implementing new features, I also do some refactoring in order to make the code unit-testable. The code is often so tightly coupled or complicated that fixing a small bug would result in a lot of classes being rewritten. So I decided to draw a line somewhere in the code where I stop refactoring. To make this clear, I drop some comments in the code explaining the situation, like: class RefactoredClass { private SingletonClass xyz; // I know SingletonClass is a Singleton, so I would not need to pass it here. // However, I would like to get rid of it in the future, so it is passed as a // parameter here to make this change easier later. public RefactoredClass(SingletonClass xyz) { this.xyz = xyz; } } Or, another piece of cake: // This might be a good candidate to be refactored. • Do I own copyright of program I made in own time?

  I created a software package that aids electrical engineers with common calculations used on site (substations to be specific). I created the package in my own time, without being asked and without guidance. The package is now widely used within my company and I intend to distribute it nationally. Do I own the copyright? My contract does state that all work produced is theirs, but this was outside of work and outside of my 'scope of work'. My company is mainly a civil and construction company and had no influence in the creation of the program. From comments: This is the paragraph "During the course of your service, you will disclose to the company all information, formulae, processes, inventions or improvements which you have learned, discovered or evolved during the course of your service or in connection with the business of the company and will sign any necessary documents to enable the company to obtain patent protection whether still in the company service or not. " They are taking it seriously and have got their lawyers.

• How to specify ingredients in Schema.org (other than recipes or drugs)?

  I'd like to use Schema.org for a series of product specs pages. The products are cosmetics (shampoos, creams, etc.) and ideally an INCI declaration will be included for every product. I'd like to use Schema.org in the declaration, but I cannot find a suitable category in Schema.org. Ingredients is meant for cooking recipes, and ActiveIngredient for (medical) drugs and dietary supplements. Did I overlook some part of the tree? Any ideas for a workaround? Or am I trying to do something out of scope?

• Should I create repositories with special functions like getStaffActive()?

  I have seen lots of articles but none really help me. That is because I want to use dapper as a DAL. Should I create repositories with special functions? Like getStaffActive()? If I use repositories I can implement with dapper-extension a generic crud I have no idea how to handle database connection. Where to open the connection? If I do this at every function then how am I supposed to use transaction scope? Somehow the repositories I work with should share a connection in order transaction to work. But how to do this? Openning connection in BLL? If I use queries and execute them directly then still the same thing.

• Application of LGPL license on a simple algorithm

  The "scope" of the GNU license is troubling me : I know it has been answered many times ( here, here, ... ) but shouldn't we take into consideration the complexity and originality of a code before using GPL license ? I explain : I'm working on a pet project using the DTW algorithm that I have written in C using the pseudo-code given on the wikipedia page . At one point I decided to change it for a C++ implementation ( just for hone my c++ skill ) . After doing so, I've looked for an existing implementation on the web, to compare the "cleanliness" of it, and I found this one : Vectored DTW implementation, which is part of limproved, a C++ library licensed under GPL v3 . Personnally, I don't mind the GNU license because it is a personnal project, which will never led to any kind of commercial purpose, but I wonder if this implementation can abide a company using it to open their code ( and other FOSS permissions ). Theoretically, I think it can ( I may be wrong :p ), but the algorithm in question is so simple (and old) that it should not.

  Im a bit unsure and have to get advice. I have the: public class MyApp extends JFrame{ And from there i do; MyServer = new MyServer (this); MyServer.execute(); MyServer is a: public class MyServer extends SwingWorker<String, Object> { MyServer is doing listen_socket.accept() in the doInBackground() and on connection it create a new class Connection implements Runnable { I have the belove DbHelper that are a singleton. It holds an Sqlite connected. Im initiating it in the above MyApp and passing references all the way in to my runnable: class Connection implements Runnable { My question is what will happen if there are two simultaneous read or `write? My thought here was the all methods in the singleton are synchronized and would put all calls in the queue waiting to get a lock on the synchronized method.   I'm having problems with my ASP.NET web forms system. It worked on our test server but now we are putting it live one of the servers is within a DMZ and the SQL server is outside of that (on our network still though - although a different subnet) I have open up the firewall completely between these two boxes to see if that was the issue and it still gives the error message "Communication with the underlying transaction manager has failed" whenever we try and use the "TransactionScope". We can access the data for retrieval it's just transactions that break it. We have also used msdtc ping to test the connection and with the amendments on the firewall that pings successfully, but the same error occurs! How do i resolve this error? Any help would be great as we have a system to go live today. Panic :) Edit: I have created a more straightforward test page with a transaction as below and this works fine. Could a nested transaction cause this kind of error and if so why would this only cause an issue when using a live box in a dmz with a firewall?   I am trying to use WpfToolkit DataGrid in Windows Phone 7 project (Silverligt 4) and it's not working.
