• What are some high quality Enterprise Architecture conferences or training programs?

  I am looking for a conference or training which will give me a broad exposure to enterprise level software architecture. I've been with the same company for 10 years and we've grown to the size where we really need to lay out a framework for the applications which support our company's business. The organic growth over the last 10 years has left us with a tightly coupled and fairly messy set of applications. We need to do a better job at componentizing our business entities and have more rigorous control on the interfaces between those entities and our business processes. I'm looking to get a broad, yet practical exposure on design patterns to support that architecture (SOA, messaging, ESB's etc). I'm hoping to gain insight from folks who have direct experience with implementing or working with what would be considered an enterprise class architecture.

• Implementing Service Level Agreements in Enterprise Manager 12c for Oracle Packaged Applications

Service Level Management, or SLM, is a key tool in the proactive management of any Oracle Packaged Application (e.g., E-Business Suite, Siebel, PeopleSoft, JD Edwards E1, Fusion Apps, etc.). The benefits of SLM are that administrators can utilize representative Application transactions, which are constantly and automatically running behind the scenes, to verify that all of the key application and technology components of an Application are available and performing to expectations. A single transaction can verify the availability and performance of the underlying Application Tech Stack in a much more efficient manner than by monitoring the same underlying targets individually. In this article, we’ll be demonstrating SLM using Siebel Applications, but the same tools and processes apply to any of the Package Applications mentioned above. In this demonstration, we will log into the Siebel Application, navigate to the Contacts View, update a contact phone record, and then log-out. This transaction exposes availability and performance metrics of multiple Siebel Servers, multiple Components and Component Groups, and the Siebel Database - in a single unified manner. We can then monitor and manage these transactions like any other target in EM 12c, including placing pro-active alerts on them if the transaction is either unavailable or is not performing to required levels. The first step in the SLM process is recording the Siebel transaction. The following screenwatch demonstrates how to record Siebel transaction using an EM tool called “OpenScript”. A completed recording is called a “Synthetic Transaction”. The second step in the SLM process is uploading the Synthetic Transaction into EM 12c, and creating Generic Service Tests. We can create a Generic Service Test to execute our synthetic transactions at regular intervals to evaluate the performance of various business flows. As these transactions are running periodically, it is possible to monitor the performance of the Siebel Application by evaluating the performance of the synthetic transactions. The process of creating a Generic Service Test is detailed in the next screenwatch. EM 12c provides a guided workflow for all of the key creation steps, including configuring the Service Test, uploading of the Synthetic Test, determining the frequency of the Service Test, establishing beacons, and selecting performance and usage metrics, just to name a few. The third and final step in the SLM process is the creation of Service Level Agreements (SLA). Service Level Agreements allow Administrators to utilize the previously created Service Tests to specify expected service levels for Application availability, performance, and usage. SLAs can be created for different time periods and for different Service Tests. This last screenwatch demonstrates the process of creating an SLA, as well as highlights the Dashboards and Reports that Administrators can use to monitor Service Test results. Hopefully, this article provides you with a good start point for creating Service Level Agreements for your E-Business Suite, Siebel, PeopleSoft, JD Edwards E1, or Fusion Applications. • Documentation and Test Assertions in Databases

  When I first worked with Sybase/SQL Server, we thought our databases were impressively large but they were, by today’s standards, pathetically small. We had one script to build the whole database. Every script I ever read was richly annotated; it was more like reading a document. Every table had a comment block, and every line would be commented too. At the end of each routine (e.g. procedure) was a quick integration test, or series of test assertions, to check that nothing in the build was broken. We simply ran the build script, stored in the Version Control System, and it pulled everything together in a logical sequence that not only created the database objects but pulled in the static data. This worked fine at the scale we had. The advantage was that one could, by reading the source code, reach a rapid understanding of how the database worked and how one could interface with it. The problem was that it was a system that meant that only one developer at the time could work on the database. It was very easy for a developer to execute accidentally the entire build script rather than the selected section on which he or she was working, thereby cleansing the database of everyone else’s work-in-progress and data. It soon became the fashion to work at the object level, so that programmers could check out individual views, tables, functions, constraints and rules and work on them independently. It was then that I noticed the trend to generate the source for the VCS retrospectively from the development server. Tables were worst affected. You can, of course, add or delete a table’s columns and constraints retrospectively, which means that the existing source no longer represents the current object. If, after your development work, you generate the source from the live table, then you get no block or line comments, and the source script is sprinkled with silly square-brackets and other confetti, thereby rendering it visually indigestible. Routines, too, were affected. In our system, every routine had a directly attached string of unit-tests. A retro-generated routine has no unit-tests or test assertions. Yes, one can still commit our test code to the VCS but it’s a separate module and teams end up running the whole suite of tests for every individual change, rather than just the tests for that routine, which doesn’t scale for database testing. With Extended properties, one can get the best of both worlds, and even use them to put blame, praise or annotations into your VCS. It requires a lot of work, though, particularly the script to generate the table. The problem is that there are no conventional names beyond ‘MS_Description’ for the special use of extended properties. This makes it difficult to do splendid things such ensuring the integrity of the build by running a suite of tests that are actually stored in extended properties within the database and therefore the VCS. We have lost the readability of database source code over the years, and largely jettisoned the use of test assertions as part of the database build. This is not unexpected in view of the increasing complexity of the structure of databases and number of programmers working on them. There must, surely, be a way of getting them back, but I sometimes wonder if I’m one of very few who miss them.

• Open World Day 4

  A Day in the Life of an OpenWorld Attendee Part V Last day at OpenWorld.  The exhibits are closed, and the final few presentations are being given.  I spent much of the day meeting with customers to talk about SOA/OSB and Coherence.  Main event of the day was the farewell party which was loud and surprisingly well attended.  I was able to have lunch with Dave Felcey, Coherence PM, who has a great blog and is always ready to share his expertise with people. So that was OpenWOrld for another year.  I met a friend of a friend who attends OpenWorld every year and attends the Demo Grounds with a list of questions to ask people.  I think that illustrates the point that everyone approaches OpenWorld in a different way and looks to get different things from it.  For me OpenWorld is a great experience to feel the energy in Oracle and network with customers and partners.  Hope to see you there next year!

• Pantech Link II, Ubuntu and Virtual XP

  Okay this is my problem. I have a Pantech Link II, dmesg states: [ 896.072037] usb 2-3: new high-speed USB device number 3 using ehci_hcd [ 896.258562] cdc_acm 2-3:1.0: ttyACM0: USB ACM device [ 896.260039] usbcore: registered new interface driver cdc_acm [ 896.260042] cdc_acm: USB Abstract Control Model driver for USB modems and ISDN adapters Have it installed through wine (pc suite and driver) and it doesn't see it. Virtual XP through VMWare Player sees my device, knows it needs a driver. The removable devices says Curitel Pantech USB Device (Maybe Driver). I have PC Suite installed in XP, I install the driver through the executable.. it says problem with installing hardware, and then it disappears. Ubuntu sees it after restart, but if I start XP with that driver installed, it disappears from both and I get these errors in dmesg: [ 1047.760555] /dev/vmmon[2882]: PTSC: initialized at 3093322000 Hz using TSC, TSCs are synchronized. No idea how to fix this.. would prefer to not have to go to another computer. I'm not trying to do anything but get the pictures off of it. I have to restart ubuntu, plug in device, for ubuntu to see it correctly again. I am like a month and a half old linux newbie so I have no idea the commands I could use for this, and I don't have a memory card in the phone to mount.

  I have a question about Software Architecture, anyone can help me or give me some hints currently, I have a J2EE project which deploys in a server, I should a Java Standard project(J2SE) should run 24 hours x 7 days to monitor something it could not run separately, because the Java Project shared the some same classes such as Java Bean classes with the J2EE project maybe my design is not correct, can anyone suggest me what should I do? Using SOA? is this correct? my current solution is run this java project using a bash, but I dont think it is then best idea. • Managed servers getting down regularly by Node Manager. WAD?

  Recently I have been working on a service request where several instances were running, and several technologies were being used, including SOA, BAM, BPEL and others. At a first glance, this may seem to be a Node Manager problem. But on this situation, the problem was at JMS - Persistent Store level. Node Manager can automatically restart Managed Servers that have the "failed" health state, or have shut down unexpectedly due to a system crash or reboot. As a matter of fact, from the provided log files it was clear that the instance was becoming unhealthy because of a persist6ent Store problem. So finally, the problem here was not with Node Manager as it was working as designed, and the restart was being caused by the Persistent Store. After this Persistent Store problem was fixed, everuthing went fine. This particular issue that I worked was on an Exalogic machine, but note that this may happen on any hardware running Weblogic.
