• Looking for a way to give acces to some programs for a limited period of time

  I install Linux on computers and add to the base installation some other programs. This computer then is sold to a customer as a larger instrument. Now, I am looking for a way to implement some kind licence for this computer so the user can use it for a year and then he would need to "renew" the licence. It is not my intention to lock the whole computer , blocking or deleting some folders should be enough. The only way I could think of was to setup a cron job that deletes my programs, or a second way would be to set the user account to expire after a year. But I give the computer with sudo privilages so the above solutions wouldn't be 100% safe. It is not my intention to encrypt any code, I just want block the possibility to execute certain programs. Is there a way or a program that would "licence the computer" ? Ideally it should be invisible to the user. After one year the program stops working and "he doesn't know why."

• Google is displaying "Translate this page" based on a previously registered domain inbound links

  I recently started a new project with a newly registered generic tld domain. As soon as Google started indexing the page, it displayed a "translate this page" in SERP's, which tries to translate the page to the language of a small Eastern European country from the language that the site actually uses. I tried everything to prevent this: language meta headers and attributes, localisation through Google Webmaster Tools...all to no avail - nothing helped. After a couple of weeks I spotted dozens of inbound links popping up in Google Webmaster Tools all coming from that small Eastern European country, from sub-pages that are not active anymore (either sending out 404's or 301's to the main page), and also had been written in that other language. So the domain had been registered before and as it looks, it did got a lot of possibly spam links in that language. I can't even ask the sites where those links should have been to remove them as they are not active anymore physically, just in Google Webmaster Tools and/or internal data masses... Now I'm at a loss about what to do? As my site is pretty new, it does not have many links pointing towards it in my targeted language. So those are probably not enough to convince Google of attaching the right language to it as Google ignores all other signals about the page language. I'm also unsure if I should use the "disavow" tool, or a reconsideration request...or what else to do about this miserable state. I never used these tools before so I don't have any experience with them. Somehow I have to convince Google about the right language of the page and also to not count/apply/whatever all those historical links from the previous owner. (The domain had been deleted without any traces in Google before I registered it) Has anyone here ever dealt with a similar "Translate this page" problem? • Is there any way to optimize my search blob program?

For ex : if I search for "Good", then the files that contains "Good or good" word the name of that files should appear in search result. • Why do Google search results include pages disallowed in robots.txt?

  I have some pages on my site that I want to keep search engines away from, so I disallowed them in my robots.txt file like this: User-Agent: * Disallow: /email Yet I recently noticed that Google still sometimes returns links to those pages in their search results. Why does this happen, and how can I stop it? Background: Several years ago, I made a simple web site for a club a relative of mine was involved in. They wanted to have e-mail links on their pages, so, to try and keep those e-mail addresses from ending up on too many spam lists, instead of using direct mailto: links I made those links point to a simple redirector / address harvester trap script running on my own site. This script would return either a 301 redirect to the actual mailto: URL, or, if it detected a suspicious access pattern, a page containing lots of random fake e-mail addresses and links to more such pages. To keep legitimate search bots away from the trap, I set up the robots.txt rule shown above, disallowing the entire space of both legit redirector links and trap pages. Just recently, however, one of the people in the club searched Google for their own name and was quite surprised when one of the results on the first page was a link to the redirector script, with a title consisting of their e-mail address followed by my name. Of course, they immediately e-mailed me and wanted to know how to get their address out of Google's index. I was quite surprised too, since I had no idea that Google would index such URLs at all, seemingly in violation of my robots.txt rule. I did manage to submit a removal request to Google, and it seems to have worked, but I'd like to know why and how Google is circumventing my robots.txt like that and how to make sure that none of the disallowed pages will show up in their search results. Ps. I actually found out a possible explanation and solution, which I'll post below, while preparing this question, but I thought I'd ask it anyway in case someone else might have the same problem. • Is using a dedicated thread just for sending gpu commands a good idea?

  The most basic game loop is like this : while(1) { update(); draw(); swapbuffers(); } This is very simple but have a problem : some drawing commands can be blocking and cpu will wait while he could do other things (like processing next update() call). • MongoDB: Replicate data in documents vs. “join”

  Disclaimer: This is a question derived from this one. What do you think about the following example of use case? I have a table containing orders. These orders has a lot of related information needed by my current queries (think about the products; the buyer information; the region, country and state of the sale point; and so on) In order to think with a de-normalized approach, I don't have to put identifiers of these related items in my main orders collection. Instead, I have to repeat all the information for each order (ie: I will repeat the buyer's name, surname, etc. for each of its orders). Assuming the previous premise, I'm committing to maintain all the data related to an order without a lot of updates (because if I modify the buyer's name, I'll have to iterate through all orders updating the ones made by the same buyer, and as MongoDB blocks at a document level on updates, I would be blocking the entire order at the update moment). I'll have to replicate all the products' related data? (ie: category, maker and optional attributes like color, size…) What if a new feature is requested and I've to make a lot of queries with the products "as the entry point of the query"? (ie: reports showing the products' sales performance grouping by region, country, or whatever) Is it fair enough to apply the $unwind operation to my orders original collection? (What about the performance?) I should have to do another collection with these queries in mind and replicate again all the products' information (and their orders)? Wouldn't be better to store a product_id in the original orders collection in order to be more tolerable to requirements change? (What about emulating JOINs?) The optimal approach would be a mixed solution with a RDBMS system like MySQL in order to retrieve the complete data? I mean: store products, users, and location identifiers in the orders collection and have queries in MySQL like getAllUsersDataByIds in which I would perform a SELECT * FROM users WHERE user_id IN ( :identifiers_retrieved_from_the_mongodb_query )

• Location-Based redirection and duplication in sub-directories affecting SEO

  I currently own the website www.xyz.com. The website has a sub-directory for each of the 3 target countries: .../en-US/ (United States), .../es-MX/ (Mexico), and .../es-DO/ (Dominican Republic). I have two main questions about this setup: Currently, the main domain/root (xyz.com) contains a blank index.php file, but I would like for a user to be redirected to one of the sub-directories based on their regional location. What is the best way to accomplish this? I have looked at using browser language-based redirection, but how would I know whether to direct a user to the MX or DO site if the browser language is set to spanish? Is there a way to detect a user's geographic location? Also, the 3 websites are practically identical except they all have 3 unique color schemes and the US site is in english while the MX and DO sites are in spanish. My problem is that I believe GoogleBot is penalizing/banning my site because the spanish text on the MX and DO pages are nearly identical and are thus marked as duplicates/spam. Is there a way to avoid this?

• Booting off a ZFS root in 14.04

  I've been running a Debian derivative (LMDE) on a ZFS root for half a year now. It was created by cloning a regular ext4-based install with all the necessary packages onto a ZFS pool, chrooting into that pool and recreating a grub menu and bootloader. The system uses an ext-3 dedicated /boot partition. I would like to do the same with Ubuntu 14.04, but have encountered several obstacles. There is no Trusty zfs-grub package The default grub package doesn't have ZFS support built in. I found a small bug in the build system responsible for that (report with patch created) and built my own grub packages. The built-in ZFS support is dysfunctional, it does not add the proper arguments to the kernel command line I thus installed the ZoL grub package I also use on my LMDE system, which does give me a correct grub.cfg However, even with that correct grub.cfg, the boot process apparently doesn't retrieve the bootfs parameter from the ZFS pool; instead the variable that's supposed to receive the value remains empty. As a result, initrd tries to load the default pool ("rpool"), which fails of course. I can however import the pool by hand, and complete the process by hand. If memory serves me well, I also had to disable apparmor, to avoid the boot process from blocking after importing the pool. Am I overlooking something? Just for comparison, I installed the Ubuntu 3.13 kernel on my LMDE system, and that works just fine (i.e. the identical kernel and grub binaries allow successful booting without glitches on LMDE but not on Ubuntu).

• Massive 404 attack with non existent URLs. How to prevent this?

  The problem is a whole load of 404 errors, as reported by Google Webmaster Tools, with pages and queries that have never been there. One of them is viewtopic.php, and I've also noticed a scary number of attempts to check if the site is a WordPress site (wp_admin) and for the cPanel login. I block TRACE already, and the server is equipped with some defense against scanning/hacking. However, this doesn't seem to stop. The referrer is, according to Google Webmaster, totally.me. I have looked for a solution to stop this, because it isn't certainly good for the poor real actual users, let alone the SEO concerns. I am using the Perishable Press mini black list (found here), a standard referrer blocker (for porn, herbal, casino sites), and even some software to protect the site (XSS blocking, SQL injection, etc). The server is using other measures as well, so one would assume that the site is safe (hopefully), but it isn't ending. Does anybody else have the same problem, or am I the only one seeing this? Is it what I think, i.e., some sort of attack? Is there a way to fix it, or better, prevent this useless resource waste? EDIT I've never used the question to thank for the answers, and hope this can be done. Thank you all for your insightful replies, which helped me to find my way out of this. I have followed everyone's suggestions and implemented the following: a honeypot a script that listens to suspect urls in the 404 page and sends me an email with user agent/ip, while returning a standard 404 header a script that rewards legitimate users, in the same 404 custom page, in case they end up clicking on one of those urls. In less than 24 hours I have been able to isolate some suspect IPs, all listed in Spamhaus. All the IPs logged so far belong to spam VPS hosting companies. Thank you all again, I would have accepted all answers if I could.

  I've developed a site that serves pure HTML Weather widgets (and they are great looking too). Just after two months I am generating 1.25K hits monthly (Google Analytics). Now I want to generate some money out of it. You can check my service out on Here . I am looking for affiliate or an Ads service that can I can hookup within but there is a twist in story. I want single liner text Ad in a particular location otherwise widgets will look rubbish, see this snapshot: Plus I have some unique places in my site to place some banner ads as well, Here are existing set of services that I've already tried: Ad Sense, doesn't allow or have such formats of methods. Peefly provides you with straight links works best but I recorded some clicks (Through Google Events) and they didn't show me any, plus it introduces overhead of manually going and choosing your links. BidVertise totally rubbish opens popups and what not, makes site look like spam I am new to this ad stuff so have a limited knowledge. Suggestions please? I have one more place in Forecast but I want to start simple. P.S. I also have a MetroUI like widget coming in the pipeline but its not ready yet.

  I was working on a Windows form app and needed a way to call out to a service without blocking the UI. There are a lot of ways to do this but I came up with one that I thought was pretty simple. It utilizes the System.Func<> generic class, which is basically a way to create delegates using generics. It's a lot more compact and simpler than creating delegates for each method you want to call asynchronously. I wanted to get it down to one line of code, but it was a lot simpler to use three lines.In this case I have a MyServiceCall method that takes an integer parameter and returns a ServiceCallResult object.public ServiceCallResult MyServiceCall(int param1)...You start by getting a Func<> object for the method you want to call, in this case MyServiceCall. Then you call BeginInvoke() on the Func passing in the parameter. The two nulls are parameters BeginInvoke expects but can be ignored here. BeginInvoke returns an IAsyncResult object that acts like a handle to the method call. Finally to get the value you call EndInvoke on the Func passing in the IAsyncResult object you got back from BeginInvoke.Func<int, ServiceCallResult> f = MyServiceCall;IAsyncResult async = f.BeginInvoke(23, null, null);ServiceCallResult result = f.EndInvoke(async);Doing it this way fires off a new thread that calls the MyServiceCall() method. This leaves the main application thread free to update the UI while the method call is running so it doesn't become unresponsive.

  I'm busy coding a reusable e-mail service for my company. The e-mail service will be doing quite a few things via injection through the strategy pattern (such as handling e-mail send rate throttling, switching between Smtp and AmazonSES or Google AppEngine for e-mail clients when daily quotas are exceeded, send statistics tracking (mostly because it is neccessary in order to stay within quotas) to name a few). Because e-mail sending will need to be throttled and other limitations exist (ex. max recipient quota on AmazonSES limiting recipients to 50 per send), the e-mails typically need to be broken up. From your experience, would it be better to send bulk (multiple recipients per e-mail) or a single e-mail per recipient? The implications of the above would be to send to a 1000 recipients, with a limit of 50 per send, you would send 20 e-mails using BCC in a newsletter scenario. When sending an e-mail per recipient, it would send 1000 e-mails. E-mail sending is asynchronous (due to inherit latency when sending, it's typically only possible to send 5 e-mails per second unless you are using multiple client asynchronously). Edit Just for full disclosure, this service won't be used by or sold to spammers and will as far as possible automatically comply with national and international laws. • Quit job for another but current employer doesn't want to lose me. Would it be a bad idea to stay?

  So I've handed in my notice at my current job as I've been offered a job at another company. However, my current employer doesn't want to lose me and they want to know what I want to stay. I mostly enjoy working there so I'd be open to negiotiation. The new job was an unexpected opportunity that presented itself. Such things I'd be looking for are: Better computers for developers Opportunity to work from home occasionally Improved internet access (e.g. able to download software, no keyword blocking) Chance to work on other technologies than my primary (we do have projects on other technologies) Pay increase (though this isn't my primary motivation) I found out that some of these were already in progress when I handed in my notice :( Is it ever a good idea to remain at a company after you've resigned? What if they meet all my conditions and alter my contract accordingly? Will I burn my bridges at the new company (I've already told them I'd accept their offer)? Update: Thanks for the answers. Quite a mixed bag which was interesting. Anyway, just so you know, I've chosen to stay at my current company. So far, it definately feels like the right decision. Guess I won't know for a few months whether is was though.

• Should I use my real name in my open source project?

  I developed a few freeware programs in the past which I had signed with my pseudonym Jardo. I'm now planning to release my first open source project and was thinking of using my full real name in the project files (as the "author"). I thought it would be good to use my name as my "trademark" so if someone (perhaps a future headhunter) googles my name, they'll find my projects. But on the other side, I feel a bit paranoid about disclosing my name (in the least case I could be getting a lot of spam to my email, its not that hard to guess your private email from your name). What do you think can be "dangerous" on disclosing your full name? What are the pros and cons? Do you use your real name or a pseudonym in your projects? I read this question: What are the advantages and disadvantages to using your real name online? but that doesn't apply to me bacause it's about using your real name online (internet discussions, profiles, etc.) where I personally see no reason to use my real name... And there is also this question: Copyrighting software, templates, etc. under real name or screen name? which deals with creating a business or a brand which also doesn't apply to me because I will never sell/give away my open source project and if someone else joins in, they can write their name as co-author without any problems...

• AR9485 wireless card loses ability to connect after hibernation

  This has happened twice now, the first time it happened I just reinstalled Ubuntu. The only things that I've been messing with in terms of networking, have been restarting the network-manager service after I resume from hibernate (because it never works right after resume, but restarting the service fixes that), and changing my mac address with ifconfig wlan0 down && ifconfig wlan0 hw ether 11:22:33:44:55 && ifconfig wlan0 up. using tail | dmesg returns a bunch of attempts to connect, saying something like authenticating ... okay you're connected! now I'm going to just disconnect because I feel like it. (reason=3). Any ideas? If it helps maybe I'll add a picture of the tail|dmesg output later. My wireless drivers are as follows: Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter Hamachi Network Interface Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter Here is a pastebin of some terminal outputs that could help. • Positioned element adding to total div height [migrated]

  I have a 800 x 600 rotatable image with forward and back buttons repositioned to the sides. The height of the div is suppose to be 600px, but the actual height of the div was pushed to 690, including the height of the button image. And the div was blocking a row of clickable menu on top. So I made the div height to 518px and moved top -75px to get the real dimension I want. But I feel dirty doing this... Is there a correct way to do this? Or is this workaround more or less correct?   I have done a small web development project using eclipse. It runs well when I try running it on browser with url localhost:8080/myproject/home.html. But if I want to access it on another machine (laptop, mobile, etc. using the same wifi) it is not possible; it is not able to connect. After Googling for a while found out that I have to use the IP address instead of 'localhost'. So I tried 10.0.0.4:8080/myproject/home.html, but still does not work. In fact i am unable to open that url on the same machine (where localhost:8080/myproject/home.html works fine). I also added a new Inbound rule in control panel firewall settings, allowing access to all ports for protocol TCP. Still have problem in running application with the url 10.0.0.4:8080/myproject/home.html (both on same machine as well as laptop and mobile). • C# HttpListener Prefix issue with anything other than localhost

  Hello, I'm trying to use C# and HttpListener with a prefix of anything other than localhost and it fails (i.e. if I give it "server1", i.e. h t t p : / / l o c a l h o s t : 1 2 3 4 works, but h t t p : / / s e r v e r 1 : 1 2 3 4 fails (sorry, but the site thinks I'm trying to spam... the spaces are there because of that...) The code is... HttpListener listener = new HttpListener(); String prefix = "h t t p : / / s e r v e r 1 : 1 2 3 4/"; listener.Prefixes.Add(prefix); listener.Start(); The failure occurs on listener.Start() with an exception of "Access is denied.". • Functions connected to signals in QtScript (on Qt 4.5.2) are not firing

  I've injected into a proprietary Qt (4.5.2) application, added my own compatible build of QtScript, and have managed to get access to all the signals I need. However, when connecting to them (via QtScript) my functions are never called. I've come up with a few theories for why this is and I've tested everything I can think of, but I've hit a bit of a wall. Note, I've never had any connection exceptions whatsoever. Here are my current theories: The signals I'm connecting to are already connected to other slots, and that's somehow blocking it (but as far as I know, all Qt signals fire to all slots with no extra work, and can't be restricted in this way) The signals are rejecting my connection, or disconnecting me after connection (but I see no facility for this) My connection is happening from another thread, and this is somehow causing it not to connect properly Are any of these theories plausible? If not, what have I missed?

  In order to improve the deployment / build process of my ASP.NET app, I would like to make a .bat that builds the current solution in release mode xcopy the files to a remote server Creating a release build via command line is easy. But how can I xcopy the files to the remote server? I think I have to map the remote destination to a network drive (?). However I could not connect to the remote server, although I have enabled file sharing for the folder on the server. Maybe the firewall is blocking the request? Which port should I open? Or is there another solution? EDIT Thanks for all the answers so far, but I probably need a step by step guide on how to set up the folder sharing on the server. I shared the folder, I opened up port 445 so that I can connect to the server but still, I cant connect from my local machine to the server in order to map the network path to a system drive.

• Android AVD With GoogleApi, Not Getting Network Connection

  I am working on a Windows XP Machine. When running AVDs out of Eclipse, I am getting "No Network Connection" when I am plugged into my company's network and using an AVD that was built with the "Google APIs by Google Inc., Android API 7, revision 1". If I use this same AVD (Google API) and connect to the internet through a Verizon Wireless card, the AVD gets an Internet Connection. If I use an AVD built with "SDK Platform Android 2.1, API 7, revision 1", and connect through my company's network, the AVD gets an Internet Connection. Any ideas what might be blocking this? I am guessing it is something in my company's network, but why only with the AVD created with the Google API?
