  • Software to draw 3D geometry

  • Need help fixing a strange path error in bash

ORIGINAL QUESTION I have two executable files I downloaded and am trying to add to the path. They are located in /home/user/folder and the specific files are /home/user/folder/app1 /home/user/folder/app2 Both app1 and app2 have the executable flag set to all (user, group, other). I can execute the files if I am in /home/user/folder and I execute these commands ./app1 ./app2 However I can't run them from elsewhere. I added this line to my .profile PATH="$PATH:/home/user/folder" and then sourced the path with . /home/user/.profile and I can see app1 and app2 when I use command completion (pressing tab). However here is what happens when I try to run app1 or app2 with the following commands (the following only shows 'app1' but the same is true of 'app2') user@comp:~$ app1 -bash: app1: command not found user@comp:~$ /home/user/folder/app1 -bash: app1: command not found user@comp:~/folder$ ./app1 (program runs) I'm stumped :), I must have missed something simple.   • VPN - Accessing computer outside of network. Only works one way

    I could use some help here. My ideal goal is to create a VPN for 2 macs that are in different locations so that they can share each others screens and share files. I basically want to do what Logmein's Hamachi does, but without the 5 user limitation. I have set up the VPN on my Synology NAS at my house using the PPTP protocol. I could also use OpenVPN. The good news is that I can use a laptop outside of my home network to access any computer on my network at my house. The bad news is that I can not do the reverse. I want to use a computer in my home network (same network as the VPN server) to access a computer outside of my network (which is connected via VPN successfully). My internal IP is 192.168.1.xxx PPTP VPN assigns my laptop that is outside of my network with 192.168.5.xxx, but when I try to access it remotely either with afp://192.168.5.xxx or vnc://192.168.5.xxx I can't connect using either. Is this something that I should be able to do or is VPN only one way? I've also tried openvpn with the same results. Thanks for any help! -Dan

  • My Computer hangs for a few minutes just after startup, and then is fine.

    So I just built myself a reasonably beefy computer, and I installed Windows 7 on it. However, I start the machine up each morning and within a few minutes, the computer will semi hang. That is the mouse is responsive, and most of the time I can open task manager, or a new tab in Chrome. Occasionally windows will be labelled as 'Not responding'. Then, the machine will get over it's problem, and will be nice and quick until I turn it off. Here's my specs: CPU: AMD Phenom-II X4 955 Black (Quad Core, 3.2ghz) RAM: 4GB of DDR3 1300 MOBO: ASUS M4A785T-M (Latest BIOS) HARD DRIVES: 2x1TB Western Digital Caviar Blacks in RAID-0. OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64. GPU: ASUS GT240 1GB. I believe this issue relates to the RAID array, as I didn't have the lockup problem before I created the array. I purchased a second drive and reformatted after creating a RAID array, since the single drive was a little on the pokey side (compared to the rest of the computer). What I have tried: Updated Raid Drivers Malware checks Windows Updates Unecessary Services CPU and Disk activity appears to be low (via Resource Monitor) No strange errors in the error log. Any thoughts?

On my machine, if i try and look at it, if the drive is open, it will close it, and then give this: $ less sr0 sr0 is not a regular file (use -f to see it) so $ less -f sr0 sr0: No medium found but if i do it on the other computer, $ less -f sr0 sr0: Permission denied so i look at the files more, and get this on both machines: $ ls -la sr0 brw-rw----+ 1 root cdrom 11, 0 Nov 12 10:13 sr0 Does anyone know a way around this? I do not have root access.

  • How important is dual-gigabit lan for a super user's home NAS?

    Long story short: I'm building my own home server based on Ubuntu with 4 drives in RAID 10. Its primary purpose will be NAS and backup. Would I be making a terrible mistake by building a NAS Server with a single Gigabit NIC? Long story long: I know the absolute max I can get out of a single Gigabit port is 125MB/s, and I want this NAS to be able to handle up to 6 computers accessing files simultaneously, with up to two of them streaming video. With Ubuntu NIC-bonding and the performance of RAID 10, I can theoretically double my throughput and achieve 250MB/s (ok, not really, but it would be faster). The drives have an average read throughput of 83.87MB/s according to Tom's Hardware. The unit itself will be based on the Chenbro ES34069-BK-180 case. With my current hardware choices, it'll have this motherboard with a Core i3 CPU and 8GB of RAM. Overkill, I know, but this server will be doing other things as well (like transcoding video). Unfortunately, the only Mini-ITX boards I can find with dual-gigabit and 6 SATA ports are Intel Atom-based, and I need more processing power than an Atom has to offer. I would love to find a board with 6 SATA ports and two Gigabit LAN ports that supports a Core i3 CPU. So far, my search has come up empty. Thus, my dilemma. Should I hold out for such a board, go with an Atom-based solution, or stick with my current single-gigabit configuration? I know there are consumer NAS units with just one gigabit interface (probably most of them), but I think I will demand a lot more from my server than the average home user. Any advice is appreciated.   • Is there a historical computer peripherals or accessories museum or even just a current list?

    Thinking about all the unique and different peripherals I've owned over the years, from ISA capture cards, to parallel port controlled shutter glasses for 3d games. I've seen many many accessory or computer peripherals come and go. The nostalgia of these things is a lot of fun. I tried to find some sort of historical time-line or list but what mostly turned up is computers themselves. I'm more interested in the mice, scanners, the weird adapters that shouldn't exist, short run very rare products, strange devices from computer shows in the 80's and 90's... Hardware you might find in a geeks basement that would be completely useless now, but was the coolest thing around when it was new. An example would be a drawing tablet I had for my TI-99 computer, or the audio tape player accessory for a C64 which let you save files to audio tapes, An ISA card that did the same for PC's hooked up to a VCR. Remember that IBM-PC Jr upgrade kit, that added a floppy drive, more memory and the AT switch in the back? I'd love to find either a wiki, or a list that has already been assembled which contain many of these weird (or common) accessories. I've had so many over the years I suppose I could start a wiki here if such a list doesn't already exist.

  • How can I send super large files directly to another computer in the Internet for free?

    I regulary need to transfer very large files (30 GB) to my friend - financial statistics. I don't have any problem with bandwidth: it is very broad here. I did some research in the area, so: 1. I would not use FTP, as it is very tricky to get it working behind a NAT. 2. I would not use Skype/MSN/ICQ, as it is not designed for file transfer and it underperforms on the huge files. 3. I would not use file-sharing services, as I need to pay for big files (30 GB is a problem here) and I don't like holding any piece of my data on the third-party server. So, I need some smart tool that will do what I need: sending files directly browser-to-browser and not browser-server-browser. Is it so complex? Is there some web application in the Internet that can do this?

  • Is it possible to map static IP to computer name instead of MAC address?

    I have a number of computers with different hostnames connected to the network. They currently hold a static IP address based on their MAC address. In other words, the static IP address is mapped to their MAC address. This gives rise to a problem and that's when we swap the harddrive from one computer to another, the MAC address becomes different and the application we are running on the harddrive has problem getting the right static IP for it to work. We can't configure the IP address in the application all the time. And changing the static IP addresses to re-map to the computer's new MAC address can be quite a pain. Since all the computers have a unique computer name as their hostname, is it possible to configure such that when these computers grab IP addresses from the DHCP server, DHCP will learn about their hostname and assign the correct IP address? This is to say, the static IP is mapped to the computers' hostname instead of their MAC address. All the computers are running on Windows 7. Would this be possible? If so how should I go about do this?

  • Any recommendations on a NAS for a home-super-user?

    Can anyone recommend a good NAS for use in a home-server environment? I would request at least 2, preferably 4 disks, and I am most interested in good to excellent throughput for file-server and backup purposes - don't need any of the fancy media-streaming or -sharing features, that's not of interest to me. For a 4 or more disk solution, support for the various RAID levels (0, 1, 1+0, 5) would be a plus - especially if supported in hardware (rather than just a software emulation). I just need a place to put my collection of data, ISO images, and so forth - and since several external disks (self-built and off-the-shelf) have failed so far, I'm looking into a more reliable solution.   • how do i completely delete ask.com from my computer?

    I have used Final Uninstaller (unregistered version) to remove it. So it removed the toolbar and the things in its folder from C:Program Files/Ask.com except for one thing; remaining are "Ask.com" folder > "Updater" folder > "Updater.exe" I have not checked my registry yet. But if there is something I want it to be gone! As to why I can't delete that updater thing, my laptop asks me permission (says need to be admin) whenever I tried to delete anything from ask.com folder, or its folder at all. I have googled, came to and followed the instructions from "Scott McClenning" in this post. Does not really work. When I say "not really", means, this error message pops up everytime I tried to do that: An error occurred applying attributes to the file: C:/Program Files/Ask.com Access is denied. How can I gain access? I AM the admin for this computer. And... don't ask me to download too many things for my computer, it adds to my frustration. Just in case you are wondering, I got this from FormatFactory when I updated it to 2.70. I should not have done so. Update: Now after I restarted my computer, I got the "EVERYONE" group in and it is under Full Control with every box ticked except for the last one (Special). When I tried to delete that folder and the .exe file, this keeps popping up as i click "try again", only goes away when I click "cancel"

The problem is that when I enable ‘Turn off display after x minutes’ feature from control panel, the device goes into sleep after ‘x’ minutes. It seems that both the options – turn off display/put computer to sleep are connected. It devices goes automatically to sleep mode as soon as the display is turned off. So, is there any method to turn off the display of the device without it going into sleep mode ? Someone wrote in the microsoft forum " The whole key to this problem seems to be the "Turn off the Display" setting. If you have that set to 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, etc...the computer will go to sleep one minute after you lock the screen. With this setting set to "Never", it doesn't do it. So something is wrong there." I want to turnoff the display but don't want to lock the device. Is that also possible ? Thanks

  • Is it OK to write code after [super dealloc]? (Objective-C)

    I have a situation in my code, where I cannot clean up my classes objects without first calling [super dealloc]. It is something like this: // Baseclass.m @implmentation Baseclass ... -(void) dealloc { [self _removeAllData]; [aVariableThatBelongsToMe release]; [anotherVariableThatBelongsToMe release]; [super dealloc]; } ... @end This works great. My problem is, when I went to subclass this huge and nasty class (over 2000 lines of gross code), I ran into a problem: when I released my objects before calling [super dealloc] I had zombies running through the code that were activated when I called the [self _removeAllData] method. // Subclass.m @implementation Subclass ... -(void) deallloc { [super dealloc]; [someObjectUsedInTheRemoveAllDataMethod release]; } ... @end This works great, and It didn't require me to refactor any code. My question Is this: Is it safe for me to do this, or should I refactor my code? Or maybe autorelease the objects? I am programming for iPhone if that matters any.

  • Automatically make user local administrator on their computer through GPO?

    In our AD 2003 domain each user gets local admin permissions on their computer. Everyone else can login with their domain account as normal user. Right now this means going to the desktop and manually adding the user as a local administrator. Is there any way to automate this process through logon scripts or GPOs? I have found ways to use a gpo to make everyone who logs in to a computer a local admin, but really only want to give it to the primary user (or in some cases users) of the computer. I've also seen methods that required adding a group for each computer...but really dont want to clutter AD like that. I do have a list mapping each user to each computer name. If it matters the desktops are a mix of xp and win7.

  • Converting EBNF to BNF

    It's been a few years since my computer-language class and so I've forgotten the finer points of BNF's and EBNF's and I don't have a textbook next to me. Specifically, I've forgotten how to convert an EBNF into BNF. From what little I remember, I know that one of the main points is to convert { term } into <term> | <many-terms>. But I don't remember the other rules. I've tried to look this up online but I can only find links to either homework questions, or a small comment about converting terms with curly braces. I can't find an exhaustive list of rules that define the translation.
