• Wireless not working, no driver showing in the Additional Drivers window

  I am a new user of Ubuntu. I have a Asus Q501L laptop that came preinstalled with Windows 8, but I wanted to move from Windows and try something new, so I just decided to install Ubuntu without thinking to much about it. The problem I have is that I can't install the additional drivers. When I go to to Additional Drivers nothing appears, it just says: no proprietary drivers are in use and in small letters continues: a proprietary driver has private code that Ubuntu developers can't review and improve. security and others updates are dependent on drivers vendor.. I can't even use the wireless connection. I really don't know what to do. I tried to download the drivers from Asus, but when I tried to install them it said: an error occurred while loading the archive. Also I don't know the model of the PC wireless card. If there is something I can do to find out that please tell me. Thanks!

• Broadcom STA driver doesn't work well with BCM4313

  Following on from my other question about our new Samsung Q330, I've noticed that the wireless is incredibly flakey. It can connect but after a little use, especially if it does a lot of downloading at once (read: install something from the Software Centre), the connection stops working. Network Manager still see the connection, there's just no network throughput. I've simple tests like pinging other local network hosts and they just fail. The Samsung Q330 has a Broadcom BCM4313 wifi card (it's proper ID: 14e4:4727) and it's running on the Broadcom STA drivers that Jockey suggests (it didn't work at all without this). I did try installing b43-fwcutter but this just didn't do anything. I was expecting a configuration screen to come up (to select a firmware) but it never did. This page suggests the newer brcm80211 driver might be able to help, but I don't know how to install that. If you think this is the right route, please let me know how one goes about installing it.

  Ubuntu 12.04 was functioning properly . Then after an update, some graphic elements stop working properly. I could not launch programs that has 3D elements. Work space switcher's window displays 2D window instead of a 3D like usual. In Details menu, the Graphic row is blank. I am using Intel GMA 4500MHD graphic card. I am guessing that the driver is not properly installed? Anyone has the same issue? Please help!

• Proprietary Driver missing after Kernel upgrade

  I recently upgraded my kernel to the Linux 3.4 kernel. Upon doing so, I found that it zapped my proprietary driver for my graphics card. As an alternative, I had saved Catalyst 12.8, but now it will not open through Software Center. I tried several other terminal methods, but it seems that many of these postings are bunk. They only work until you're almost done and then you get errors. I just need a little help from somebody who has been there, as I am new to Ubuntu. I'm kind of afraid to reboot because this is my 3rd full load of Ubuntu. Any ideas?

  after following this command to update wifi drivers:1- Boot into Ubuntu 2- Open a terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T 3- Type in the following (verbatim!) sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade press Enter, the command will prompt for your password (the one you use to login into Ubuntu), type it and press Enter. Wait for it to finish updating your system. • Xen 4.1 + NVidia driver = Unity has no window decorations

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 with Unity. I installed XEN and booted its kernel. The machine booted normally. However, when I started Unity (3D), there were no window decorations. I tried Unity 2D and the window decorations are present there. I then decided to remove the driver (installed through Additional Drivers) and install it manually like this: IGNORE_XEN_PRESENCE=y CC="gcc -DNV_VMAP_4_PRESENT -DNV_SIGNAL_STRUCT_RLIM" ./NVIDIA* ...but the window decorations were still missing in Unity 3D. The window decorations are there when I boot the regular Ubuntu kernel (without XEN support). What could be the problem and how to fix it?

  I've looked all over and can't find any reason as to why or how Nvidia names their drivers. for example they have a 330.xxx/340.xxx series that are current but also a 300.xxx and i've found that they aren't always release in order by number. Here's an example on there site with version and release date 331.38 - January 13 334.16 - Feb 7 331.49 - Feb 18 I'm really confused about what driver to actually go with, a few different series versions seem to work adequately and I just want to have an understanding of it and what the best option to work from would be. • Compiz does not work with proprietary nvidia driver

  I have a ThinkPad T420 with an NVidia Quadro video card. It crashes constantly when I close this lid (if you are curious..) and I suspect on a problem with nouveau drivers, so I installed the proprietary NVidia drivers. Howeer, when I install and use this driver, Compiz does not work. If I start a session with uses Compiz, no window manager/decorator is presented. I just can get Metacity working. Does anyone has any idea about what may be causing this problem?

  I have a Acer Aspire Revo nettop and it seems like it's a common error that Ubuntu doesn't have a driver for the ethernet. • "input not supported" at login screen after ati driver is installed

  I'm running ubuntu 11.10 and I installed the Ati driver from the oficial page. When i reboot, the grub and the splash screen are working (at lower resolution) but instead of the login screen, it shows "input not supported" message. If I use "Ctrl+Alt+ keypad +" I can see my login screen at 640x480 resolution and login. I don't know how to make login screen displays 1440x900@60, that is the resolution set on my session. I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 with ati hd4200 video card, a monitor acer aL1916w that supports the resolution 1440x900.

• HW resources for the device driver [closed]

  Need to provide memory and IRQ resources to the Linux kernel in order to bring up the CAN controller. Have no idea how to get them. Below is the structure I need to fill in. This structure I have taken for example, this is for the Run-Time Clock, but I need for CAN controller. • Unwittingly activate wrong wireless driver and now cannot activate the correct one

  I just installed Kubuntu 10.10 on my MacBook 3,1 and found no wireless connection. Using KPackageKit I activated Broadcom b43 because it had already been selected for me. When I subsequently tried to activate Broadcom STA, however, I was returned with an error. After reading Jockey log I removed the wrong driver and reinstalled all drivers so that I can activate the correct one. It hasn't work even though KPackageKit now shows that I have installed: bcmwl-kernel-source bcmwl-modaliases broadcom-sta-common broadcom-sta-source According to the log it appears as if there are conflicts but I don't know how to rectify it. I'm completely new to the platform, just started using Kubuntu 2 days ago. I'll appreciate any advice anyone can give. Thanks.

• Installing driver for Ralink Realtek 8187 WiFi adapter

  I purchased a WiFi adapter online, and it came with an installation CD with drivers. I installed it just fine on Windows, and am now trying on Ubuntu 10.10. The CD came with the driver files for Linux as well, but I have no idea why they aren't working - my guess is that I don't properly understand what to do with them. I have uploaded the contents of the folder which came with the CD here. There is a README in there, but the instructions under the installation header didn't get me anywhere unfortunately. • How to install Radeon X600 driver

  I am completely new to Ubuntu and now running into so many problems regarding my display. I will be so grateful to the community to help me out and keep me loving Ubuntu. When I run lspci | grep VGA I get the following output 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV380 [Radeon X600 (PCIE)] I am not sure if it means the driver is installed. Now the problem is I can not change the resolution like I can do in windows. I wanted to use dual monitor but it can not detect dual monitor. The monitor option in the preference shows 'Unknown' I tried to use a VGA switch for my ps3 and computer, but the computer is stuck with 1024x768 resolution. • Making HTML5 videos stored on AWS S3 **difficult** to download (because I cant make it impossible)

  I am building a website that hosts video's stored on AWS's S3 service. The videos are played thru a HTML5 player we have built. Ive just been asked to make sure "nobody can steal our video's". Now I know that if you really don't want something stolen, don't put it up on the internet. However I just need to secure these videos as good as possible, the videos need to at the very least resist someone going thru the source code and trying to download them manually. One option available to me is to completely rebuild the video player in flash. This is not ideal, for several reasons, notably because I would also then have to build an App for mobile devices to be able to view this site. So I am looking for other options. I have heard about using a token to make the file available only during certain times. I have heard of using a separate file to serve the videos that sits between the HTML5 page and the video file. I am also having a look at IAM, the Secure AWS Access Control, in the hopes AWS can solve this problem for me. Can anyone here recommend any of these options? Or perhaps suggest other options available to me? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• alx driver not working properly

  My alx driver seems to be working fine for everything except apt-get. I can navigate to web pages, the ping command works just fine, but whenever I try to do apt-get update or apt-get install it hangs on trying to connect to whatever archive it's trying to pull info from. There's no error message, nothing to imply that it can't connect, it just hangs there and does nothing at all. I've tried re installing alx, upgrading/downgrading my linux kernel, downloading source and building alx from scratch, etc etc but nothing works. Does anybody else have this problem/know how to fix it?

• What driver for nVIDIA GeForce MX440?

  I have recently installed (clean install) Ubuntu 12.10 on a desktop PC with nVIDIA GeForce MX440 (AGP 8x) and I have problems with Unity. Although I can see the desktop, however i can't see unity bar and icons. So, I decided to install lubuntu-desktop to see the performance. And yes! I choose lubuntu-desktop from Log On screen and the performance is definetely much better and has nothing to do with the aforementioned on unity. The system has native drivers from the Ubuntu installation. I didn't touch anything in xorg configuration. I also remember that I have managed to have the best performance with this graphic card on my previous Ubuntu 9.10 system, by editing some values in /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. But I can't remember that options, because I formatted the / partition! My question is: Which is the most suitable driver for this card, in order to load the unity feature and have better performance on it?

• Overlapping audio in IE when I show/hide videos

  I have a thumbnail list with links to individual videos. Everything works fine in all browsers but IE. In IE, if I start a video and (without slicking pause or stop) click on the thumbnail for the next video, the audio continues playing. In other words, the audio for both videos plays at once. Any suggestions? • How do I record video to a local disk in AIR?

  I'm trying to record a webcam's video and audio to a FLV file stored on the users local hard disk. I have a version of this code working which uses NetConnection and NetStream to stream the video over a network to a FMS (Red5) server, but I'd like to be able to store the video locally for low bandwidth/flaky network situations. I'm using FLex 3.2 and AIR 1.5, so I don't believe there should be any sandbox restrictions which prevent this from occurring. Things I've seen: FileStream - Allows reading.writing local files but no .attachCamera and .attachAudio methids for creating a FLV. flvrecorder - Produces screen grabs from the web cam and creates it's own flv file. Doesn't support Audio. License prohibits commercial use. SimpleFLVWriter.as - Similar to flvrecorder without the wierd license. Doesn't support audio. This stackoverflow post - Which demonstrates the playback of a video from local disk using a NetConnection/NetStream. Given that I have a version already which uses NetStream to stream to the server I thought the last was most promising and went ahead and put together this demo application. • How do I sent an "over-sized" video via my Anrdoid?

  When I try to e-mail my 10-minute videos to my gmail account, but when I try to attach the videos the phone gives me this error: 'File is too large and cannot be attached'. Can't reproduce because my Android is hooked up to USB, but I'll edit-- S3x-- What's any convenient way to upload/send a video without having to get out the USB? Can I do it without using any 3rd-party apps, or at least using safe 3rd-party apps? Youtube is an option, I believe, but I want to have a hard copy on my PC for editing. Attachments are more convenient.

• Experiences using VLC for video-on-demand streaming? (VLM)

  I'm considering my options for implementing a VOD service. Until recently my choices seemed to be either Wowza or Darwin, but now I discovered VLM, which looks really cool. I am going to stream MPEG4 H.264 video with AAC audio. I'm probably going to use the RTSP protocol, but I'm willing to use HTTP as well (after reading this article). Can anyone comment on his or her experiences with VLM? How does it compare to Darwin or Wowza? Is it stable and worthy of production use? Are there any limitations or performance problems?

• Play Video on Safari iTouch

  I have a web site that opens iframe for video on page, page uses ajax to pull in videos from selected menu. As expected and understood, on iTouch after selecting video it shows a play button, which brings up video in another screen. However, when the video completes, it returns browser to page prior to one where video was played from. Sequence: - open Page1 - go to Page2 which offers videos to play, in iframe - play video - video completes, returns to Page1, not Page2!! Only happens on iTouch, so must be issue with how control is returned on video completion. Any suggestions? If this is not a known problem, I can work up example (currently, need account on site).
