• Does the use of mongodb enhance extending/changing database driven applications?

  When an application is created which need to store data, an SQL database is used very often. So did I in a lot of asp.net applications. The resulting applications have often an ORM like the entity framework and maybe a business layer. So when such an application needs to be extended(let's say you have to add a comment property to an object), you have to change/extend the database, then the ORM and the business layer and so on. To deploy the changes you have to update the target database and the application. I know that things like code first and fluent can make this approach easier. I tried mongodb, I only used the standard driver and I had to extend some objects and all I had to do was changing the code. So it feels that such approaches are much easier to realize when using mongodb. I don't have much experience with larger applications an mongodb. I know that a SQL database or mongodb doesn't fit for all needs and both have their pros and cons. I want to know if my feeling is right, if yes I would choose rather choose mongodb than SQL database.

• Is your TRY worth catching?

    A very useful error handling TRY/CATCH construct is widely used to catch all execution errors  that do not close the database connection. The biggest downside is that in the case of multiple errors the TRY/CATCH mechanism will only catch the last error. An example of this can be seen during a standard restore operation. In this example I attempt to perform a restore from a file that no longer exists. Two errors are being fired: 3201 and 3013: Assuming that we are using the TRY and CATCH construct, the ERROR_MESSAGE() function will catch the last message only: To workaround this problem you can prepare a temporary table that will receive the statement output. Execute the statement inside the xp_cmdshell stored procedure, connect back to the SQL Server using the command line utility sqlcmd and redirect it's output into the previously created temp table.  After receiving the output, you will need to parse it to understand whether the statement has finished successfully or failed. It’s quite easy to accomplish as long as you know which statement was executed. In the case of generic executions you can query the output table and search for words like“Msg%Level%State%” that are usually a part of the error message.Furthermore, you don’t need TRY/CATCH in the above workaround, since the xp_cmdshell procedure always finishes successfully and you can decide whether to fire the RAISERROR statement or not. Yours, Maria

• Should mock objects for tests be created at a high or low level

  When creating unit tests for those other objects, what is the best way to create mock objects that provide data to other objects. Should they be created at a 'high level' and intercept the calls as soon as possible, or should they be done at a 'low level' and so make as much as the real code still be called? e.g. I'm writing a test for some code that requires a NoteMapper object that allows Notes to be loaded from the DB. class NoteMapper { function getNote($sqlQueryFactory, $noteID) { // Create an SQL query from $sqlQueryFactory // Run that SQL // if null // return null // else // return new Note($dataFromSQLQuery) } } I could either mock this object at a high level by creating a mock NoteMapper object, so that there are no calls to the SQL at all e.g. class MockNoteMapper { function getNote($sqlQueryFactory, $noteID) { //$mockData = {'Test Note title', "Test note text" } // return new Note($mockData); } } Or I could do it at a very low level, by creating a MockSQLQueryFactory that instead of actually querying the database just provides mock data back, and passing that to the current NoteMapper object. It seems that creating mocks at a high level would be easier in the short term, but that in the long term doing it at a low level would be more powerful and possibly allow more automation of tests e.g. by recording data in an out of a DB and then replaying that data for tests. Is there a recommended way of creating mocks? Are there any hard and fast rules about which are better, or should they both be used where appropriate?

  One of the nice things about SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is that you can highlight a table name in a script and press Alt + F1 to perform sp_help on it. Unfortunately I've never been able to use that feature as the majority of the tables in our product belong to a schema other than dbo.    On a long train journey back to York I wondered if I could solve this problem by writing my own replacement for sp_help (which I’ve called sp_help_table_schemas).  My version works by first checking the system tables to find out which schemas the table belongs to SELECT s.Name   --Find the schema FROM sys.schemas s  JOIN sys.tables t on t.schema_id = s.schema_id  WHERE t.name = 'Orders'It then dynamically calls the standard sp_help method but this time supplying the table owner as well.SET @cmd = 'EXEC sp_help ''' + QUOTENAME(@SchemaName) + '.' + QUOTENAME(@ObjectName) + ''' ;' ;           EXEC ( @cmd )Once I had proved the basics worked I wrapped it up into a stored procedure and deployed it to the master database on my laptop.  It was then just a question of going into Tools à Options within SSMS and defining the keyboard short cutA couple of notes You can’t amend the existing Alt+F1 entry to I went with Ctrl+F1.  You need to open new query window for the change to be picked upSo I can now highlight a table name and press Ctrl+F1 The completed script is attached.   Thanks go to Martin Bell who reviewed my stored procedure and give some valuable advice.

• Applying Interactive Sorting to Multiple Columns in Reporting Services

  A nice feature that appeared first in SQL Server 2008 is the ability to allow the user to click a column header to sort that column. It defaults to an ascending sort first, but you can click the column again to switch to a descending sort. You can learn more about interactive sorts in general at the Adding Interactive Sort to a Data Region in Books Online. Not mentioned in the article is how to apply interactive sorting to multiple columns, hence the reason for this post! Let’s say that I have a simple table like this: To enable interactive sorting, I open the Text Box properties for each of the column headers – the ones in the top row. Here’s an example of how I set up basic interactive sorting: Now when I preview the report, I see icons appear in each text box on the header row to indicate that interactive sorting is enabled. The initial sort order that displays when you preview the report depends on how you design the report. In this case, the report sorts by Sales Territory Group first, and then by Calendar Year. Interactive sorting overrides the report design. So let’s say that I want to sort first by Calendar Year, and then by Sales Territory Group. To do this, I click the arrow to the right of Calendar Year, and then, while pressing the Shift key, I click the arrow to the right of Sales Territory Group twice (once for ascending order and then a second time for descending order). Now my report looks like this: This technique only seems to work when you have a minimum of three columns configured with interactive sorting. If I remove the property from one of the columns in the above example, and try to use the interactive sorting on the remaining two columns, I can sort only the first column. The sort on the second column gets ignored. I don’t know if that’s by design or a bug, but I do know that’s what I’m experiencing when I try it out!

• Working with Reporting Services Filters – Part 2: The LIKE Operator

  In the first post of this series, I introduced the use of filters within the report rather than in the query. I included a list of filter operators, and then focused on the use of the IN operator. As I mentioned in the previous post, the use of some of these operators is not obvious, so I'm going to spend some time explaining them as well as describing ways that you can use report filters in Reporting Services in this series of blog posts. Now let's look at the LIKE operator. If you write T-SQL queries, you've undoubtedly used the LIKE operator to produce a query using the % symbol as a wildcard for multiple characters like this: select * from DimProduct where EnglishProductName like '%Silver%' And you know that you can use the _ symbol as a wildcard for a single character like this: select * from DimProduct where EnglishProductName like '_L Mountain Frame - Black, 4_'   So when you encounter the LIKE operator in a Reporting Services filter, you probably expect it to work the same way. But it doesn't. You use the * symbol as a wildcard for multiple characters as shown here: Expression Data Type Operator Value [EnglishProductName] Text Like *Silver* Note that you don’t have to include quotes around the string that you use for comparison. Books Online has an example of using the % symbol as a wildcard for a single character, but I have not been able to successfully use this wildcard. If anyone has a working example, I’d love to see it!

  How many of us have been forced to select one technology over another when designing a new system? What factors do we and should we consider? How can we ensure the correct business decision is made? This lab is broken down into four main steps: Logically partition and order the data that is used in the MATCH_RECOGNIZE clause with its PARTITION BY and ORDER BY clauses. Define patterns of rows to seek using the PATTERN clause of the MATCH_RECOGNIZE clause. These patterns use regular expressions syntax, a powerful and expressive feature, applied to the pattern variables you define.   I am trying to connect my android app to the hsql db server. Server runs on computer-1. I can connect to the db server from local machine through java as well as Db-visualizer. I can connect to the db server from another computer(computer-2) using Db-visualizer with comouter-1 ip address. Now trying to connect from my app in Nexus 7 the same way I was connecting from computer-2. I am getting "No Suitable Driver" error. • Documenting your database with Visual Studio 2012 SSDT tools

  The title of this post is interesting and something I am wishing you and your colleagues had a better way to do. I understand as I am asked this question frequently. I couple of weeks ago I was asked the same question by a customer who documents their database using the ApexSQL Doc tools which uses the extended properties on objects to create automated documentation. I thought that was super interesting and went down the path to see how we could could support the creation of this documentation while leveraging the Visual Studio 2012 SSDT Tools. What I found is was rather intriguing. There is a property called “Description” on all objects in the SSDT tools. This property is rather subtle and I am betting overlooked. To be honest, this property has probably been there for a while and I just never discovered it. Adding text to this '”Description” property it allows Visual Studio to create the commands for the extended properties directly to your schema which should be version controlled. As I did more digging there seemed to be extended properties at every level in the SQL database objects. This fills some rather challenging gaps and allows organizations to manage SQL Schema using the Visual Studio SQL database tools while allowing a way to automatically document the database. This will also work in the automation of the creation and alter scripts that can be generated as part f an automated build system. • Creating Parent-Child Relationships in SSRS

  As I have been working on SQL Server Reporting Services reports the last couple of weeks I ran into a scenario where I needed to present a parent-child data layout.  It is rare that I have seen a report that was a simple tabular or matrix format and this report continued that trend.  I found that the processes for developing complex SSRS reports aren’t as commonly described as I would have thought.  Below I will layout the process that I went through to create a solution. I started with a List control which will contain the layout of the master (parent) information.  This allows for a main repeating report part.  The dataset for this report should include the data elements needed to be passed to the subreport as parameters.  As you can see the layout is simply text boxes that are bound to the dataset. The next step is to set a row group on the List row.  When the dialog appears select the field that you wish to group your report by.  A good example in this case would be the employee name or ID. Create a second report which becomes the subreport.  The example below has a matrix control.  Create the report as you would any parameter driven document by parameterizing the dataset. Add the subreport to the main report inside the row of the List control.  This can be accomplished by either dragging the report from the solution explorer or inserting a Subreport control and then setting the report name property. The last step is to set the parameters on the subreport.  In this case the subreport has EmpId and ReportYear as parameters.  While some of the documentation on this states that the dialog will automatically detect the child parameters, but this has not been my experience.  You must make sure that the names match exactly.  Tie the name of the parameter to either a field in the dataset or a parameter of the parent report. del.icio.us Tags: SQL Server Reporting Services,SSRS,SQL Server,Subreports

• Azure Search Preview

  One of the things I’ve been keeping an eye on for quite a while now is the development of the Azure Search system. While it’s not a full replacement for the full-text indexing service in SQL Server on-premises as yet, it’s a really, really good start. Liam Cavanagh, Pablo Castro and the team have done a great job bringing this to the preview stage and I suspect it could be quite popular. I was very impressed by how they incorporated quite a bit of feedback I gave them early on, and I’m sure that others involved would have felt the same. There are two tiers at present. One is a free tier and has shared resources; the other is currently $125/month and has reserved resources. I would like to see another tier between these two, much the same way that Azure websites work. If you have any feedback on this, now would be a good time to make it known. In the meantime, given there is a free tier, there’s no excuse to not get out and try it. • How to configure mysqldump to avoid max_allowed_packet error

  Honestly it baffles me that with a completely default installation of mysql if I run mysqldump with default parameters it generates a SQL file that can't be imported into another completely default installation of mysql. From what I can gather it's got something to do with the max_allowed_packet setting and/or the net_buffer_length setting. I've read a bunch about this, and tried tweaking it a bunch of ways on both the export and import sides, but it still doesn't work. I keep getting the packet too big error on import. From everything I've read, here's my best guess: mysqldump --net_buffer_length=50000 myschema > giant_file.sql Because I read here that mysqldump refers to max_allowed_packet as net_buffer_length because ... uhh ... anyway. Then to import mysql --max_allowed_packet=999999 myschema < giant_file.sql But this still doesn't work. How do I export / import the database???

• Connect using sqlplus to db server through multiple tunnels

  I would like to create an SQL Developer connection to a database through a couple of tunnels. The steps right now are: Connect to server A - connect to server B - run sqlplus against tnsname on a server that I do not have ssh access to. Is there an easy way of using SQL Developer instead of sqlplus? I have read through 20 articles on the subject and still have no idea how to actually make the connection. I understand that you can chain ssh -L commands to get the server connection, but I don't know how to use that connection in SQL Developer.

• Configuring Team Foundation Server Basic on Home Server.

  For the installation I selected only the Team Foundation Server role. Then, I opened the Team Foundation Server Administration Console (which I think is a great addition and improvement over the way TFS was configured in the past) to proceed with the configuration of the pieces. Once I selected the Configure Installed Features, the Configuration Center opened up. Now, the choices … In my implementation here I just want to take advantage of Source Control primarily.  I want to be able to store my code and projects.  So, Basic it is! So, the Basic Configuration Wizard opens up.  Now the options to configure are very limited, but we have to provide details for the SQL Server Instance. And now, to select Install SQL Server express.  If you want to take advantage of another system in your environment to host your database, well you could Use an existing SQL Server Instance. Once it has the details it needs, you get a Summary view to confirm your choices. Once, you click next or verify, it runs readiness checks on your system to make sure the installation will have a successful pass.  And we love GREEN! Now, since got the green flag, our next stop is to let the wizard do its magic, click on Configure.  And once again, we love GREEN! We click Next, and … We like a big Green Success sign … We close the Configuration Center … First results … Web Access …  Nothing to show … but we are there! And all this running from a Microsoft Home Server installation.
