• Monitoring System for the cloud?

  I need a monitoring system, much like ganglia / nagios that is build for the cloud. I need it to support : Adding / removing nodes dynamically. (Node shuts down, dose not imply node failure...) Dynamic node based categorization, meaning node can identify them self as being part of group X (ganglia gets this almost right, but lacks the dynamic part...) Does not require multicast support (generally not allowed in cloud based setups) Plugins for recent cool stuff such as Hadoop, Cassandra, Mongo would be cool. More features include: External API, web interface and co. I've looked at Ganglia, munin and they both seem be almost there (but not exactly). I would also go for reasonably priced Software as Service solution. I'm currently doing research, so Suggestions are highly appreciated. Thank you, Maxim

• cannot connect to MS FTP 7.5 on Windows 2008 on Amazon EC2 instance

  I have just installed the MS FTP 7.5 upgrade on my Windows 2008 Server (Service Pack 2) running on an Amazon EC2 instance. In the FTP Firewall Support settings for the server in IIS Manager I have set up the passive port range 45001 - 45005 and also set the External Firewall IP address to match the assigned Amazon Elastic IP address. Using the AWS Console I changed the Security Group for the server to allow access to the server through ports 21 and 45001 through 45005. Using an FTP client (either the command line FTP client or Windows Explorer) on the Amazon server I can connect to the FTP server but I cannot connect with an external FTP client. When I checked to see which ports were open on the server using Shields Up it shows that port 21 is open but ports 45001 to 45005 are closed. I assume I'm missing something. Any help greatly appreciated.

• PASS: The Budget Process

  Every fiscal year PASS creates a detailed budget.  This helps us set priorities and communicate to our members what we’re going to do in the upcoming year.  You can review the current budget on the PASS Governance page.  That page currently requires you to login but I’m talking with HQ to see if there are any legal issues with opening that up. The Accounting Team The PASS accounting team is two people.  The Executive Vice-President of Finance (“EVP”) and the PASS Accounting Manager.  Sandy Cherry is the accounting manager and works at PASS HQ.  Sandy has been with PASS since we switched management companies in 2007.  Throughout this document when I talk about any actual work related to the budget that’s all Sandy :)  She’s the glue that gets us through this process.  Last year we went through 32 iterations of the budget before the Board approved so it’s a pretty busy time for her us – well, mostly her. Fiscal Year The PASS fiscal year runs from July 1st through June 30th the following year.  Right now we’re in fiscal year 2011.  Our 2010 Summit actually occurred in FY2011.  We switched to this schedule from a calendar year in 2006.  Our goal was to have the Summit occur early in our fiscal year.  That gives us the rest of the year to handle any significant financial impact from the Summit.  If registrations are down we can reduce spending.  If registrations are up we can decide how much to increase our reserves and how much to spend.  Keep in mind that the Summit is budgeted to generate 82% of our revenue this year.  How it performs has a significant impact on our financials.  The other benefit of this fiscal year is that it matches the Microsoft fiscal year.  We sign an annual sponsorship agreement with Microsoft and it’s very helpful that our fiscal years match. This year our budget process will probably start in earnest in March or April.  I’d like to be done in early June so we can publish before July 1st.  I was late publishing it this year and I’m trying not to repeat that. Our Budget Our actual budget is an Excel spreadsheet with 36 sheets.  We remove some of those when we publish it since they include salary information.  The budget is broken up into various portfolios or departments.  We have 20 portfolios.  They include chapters, marketing, virtual chapters, marketing, etc.  Ideally each portfolio is assigned to a Board member.  Each portfolio also typically has a staff person assigned to it.  Portfolios that aren’t assigned to a Board member are monitored by HQ and the ExecVP-Finance (me).  These are typically smaller portfolios such as deferred membership or Summit futures.  (More on those in a later post.)  All portfolios are reviewed by all Board members during the budget approval process, when interim financials are released internally and at year-end. The Process Our first step is to budget revenues.  The Board determines a target attendee number.  We have formulas based on historical performance that convert that to an overall attendee revenue number.  Other revenue projections (such as vendor sponsorships) come from different parts of the organization.  I hope to have another post with more details on how we project revenues. The next step is to budget expenses.  Board members fill out a sample spreadsheet with their budget for the year.  They can add line items and notes describing what the amounts are for.  Each Board portfolio typically has from 10 to 30 line items.  Any new initiatives they want to pursue needs to be budgeted.  The Summit operations budget is managed by HQ.  It includes the cost for food, electrical, internet, etc.  Most of these come from our estimate of attendees and our contract with the convention center.  During this process the Board can ask for more or less to be spent on various line items.  For example, if we weren’t happy with the Internet at the last Summit we can ask them to look into different options and/or increasing the budget.  HQ will also make adjustments to these numbers based on what they see at the events and the feedback we receive on the surveys. After we have all the initial estimates we start reviewing the entire budget.  It is sent out to the Board and we can see what each portfolio requested and what the overall profit and loss number is.  We usually start with too much in expenses and need to cut.  In years past the Board started haggling over these numbers as a group.  This past year they decided I should take a first cut and present them with a reasonable budget and a list of what I changed.  That worked well and I think we’ll continue to do that in the future. We go through a number of iterations on the budget.  If I remember correctly, we went through 32 iterations before we passed the budget.  At each iteration various revenue and expense numbers can change.  Keep in mind that the PASS budget has 200+ line items spread over 20 portfolios.  Many of these depend on other numbers.  For example, if we decide increase the projected attendees that cascades through our budget.  At each iteration we list what changed and the impact.  Ideally these discussions will take place at a face-to-face Board meeting.  Many of them also take place over the phone.  Board members explain any increase they are asking for while performing due diligence on other budget requests.  Eventually a budget emerges and is passed. Publishing After the budget is passed we create a version without the formulas and salaries for posting on the web site.  Sandy also creates some charts to help our members understand the budget.  The EVP writes a nice little letter describing some of the changes from last year’s budget.  You can see my letter and our budget on the PASS Governance page. And then, eight months later, we start all over again.

• MySQL port 3306 blocked in csf yet can still telnet to port 3306 from external host

  We have a Centos 6 VPS that was recently migrated to a new machine within the same web hosting company. It's running WHM/cPanel and has csf/lfd installed. csf is set up with mostly vanilla config. I'm no iptables expert, csf has not let me down before. If a port isn't in the TCP_IN list, it should be blocked on the firewall by iptables. My problem is that I can telnet to port 3306 from an external host, yet I think iptables ought to be blocking 3306 because of csf's rules. We are now failing a security check because of this open port. (this output is obfuscated to protect the innocent: www.ourhost.com is the host with the firewall problem) [root@nickfenwick log]# telnet www.ourhost.com 3306 Trying 158.255.45.107... Connected to www.ourhost.com. Escape character is '^]'. HHost 'nickfenwick.com' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL serverConnection closed by foreign host. So the connection is established, and MySQL refuses the connection due to its configuration. I need the network connection to be refused at the firewall level, before it reaches MySQL. Using WHM's csf web UI I can see 'Firewall Configuration' includes a fairly sensible TCP_IN line: TCP_IN: 20,21,22,25,53,80,110,143,222,443,465,587,993,995,2077,2078,2082,2083,2086,2087,2095,2096,8080 (lets ignore that I could trim that a little for now, my concern is that 3306 is not listed in that list) When csf is restarted it logs the usual slew of output as it sets up iptables rules, for example what looks like it blocking all traffic and then allowing specific ports like SSH on 22: [cut] DROP all opt -- in * out * 0.0.0.0/0 -> 0.0.0.0/0 [cut] ACCEPT tcp opt -- in !lo out * 0.0.0.0/0 -> 0.0.0.0/0 state NEW tcp dpt:22 [cut] I can see that iptables is running, service iptables status returns a long list of firewall rules. Here is my Chain INPUT section from service iptables status, hopefully that's enough to show how the firewall is configured. • Hardware wireless switch has no effect after suspend and 13.10 upgrade

  This seems to be a fairly chronic problem, as shown by the following questions: How do I fix a "Wireless is disabled by hardware switch" error? Wireless disabled by hardware switch "Wireless disabled by hardware switch" after suspend and other hardware buttons ineffective - how can I solve this? but no good solutions have been found! Wireless works fine after a reboot, but after a suspend the hardware switch (for my laptop this is f12) has no effect on the wireless, it is just permanently off, and shows that it is with a red LED. Also I'll admit I'm a bit lost on that and would like help doing so with the specific information I've given. xev shows that no internal event is triggered for my wireless switch (f12), but other function keys also acting as hardware switches work fine.   Just came a cross a sample written by Steve Muench, which somewhere deep in its implementation details uses the following code to route exceptions to the ADF binding layer to be handled by the ADF model error handler (which can be customized by overriding the DCErrorHandlerImpl class and configuring the custom class in DataBindings.cpx file) To route an exception to the ADFm error handler, Steve used the following code ((DCBindingContainer)BindingContext.getCurrent().getCurrentBindingsEntry()).reportException(ex); The same code however can be used in managed beans as well to enforce consistent error handling in ADF. As an example, lets assume a managed bean method hits an exception. To simulate this, let's use the following code: public void onToolBarButtonAction(ActionEvent actionEvent) {    throw new JboException("Just to tease you !!!!!");        } The exception shows at runtime as displayed in the following image: Assuming a try-catch block is used to intercept the exception caused by a managed bean action, you can route the error message display to the ADF model error handler. Again, let's simulate the code that would need to go into a try-catch block public void onToolBarButtonAction(ActionEvent actionEvent) {    JboException ex = new JboException("Just to tease you !!!!!");  BindingContext bctx = BindingContext.getCurrent();    ((DCBindingContainer)bctx.getCurrentBindingsEntry()).reportException(ex); } The error now displays as shown in the image below As you can see, the error is now handled by the ADFm Error handler, which - as mentioned before - could be a custom error handler. Using the ADF model error handling for displaying exceptions thrown in managed beans require the current ADF Faces page to have an associated PageDef file (which is the case if the page or view contains ADF bound components). Note that to invoke methods exposed on the business service it is recommended to always work through the binding layer (method binding) so that in case of an error the ADF model error handler is automatically used.

  Hey, I'm currently managing a terminal server in a domain. As the TS-service just got installed, previous users (I logged in with every user once to test it and set up a few things) use the default windows 2008 theme. New users automatically use the fancy Aero theme. Is there a way to push the Aero theme to all current users? I currently have something like this in my policies: However, when logging in with a user, the theme is not changed. Only if I disable "prohibit access to the control panel", the theme can be changed (doesn't seem to change automatically). But this gives them access to every other control panel feature as well. And giving users only access to "desk.cpl" CP-applet, gives them an access error as well when attempting to change the theme. Another question: can I, as admin, take over and/or log in as another user when that user is not logged in? Thanks

• Remotely connecting to a Hyper-V hosted VM's console.

  Hi everyone. I've just managed to successfully move an aging beige box into a Hyper-V virtual machine. We used to use the beige box by walking over and sitting at the computer itself, but we can't do that so easily when its inside the Hyper-V system. Is there a way please to access the VM's console from a workstation running XP Pro? Please note that its an obscure OS running inside the VM, so installing a VNC or similar service inside the VM is not an option. Many thanks.

  I currently have two ubuntu servers running Heartbeat and DRBD. Let's say one node is down... The servers are directory connected with a 1000Mbps cross over cable on eth1 and have access to a IP camera LAN on eth0 The node that is still functioning won't start up heartbeat and provide access to the drbd resource. I have to manually restart heartbeat by "sudo service heartbeat restart" to get everything up and running. How can I get it to start fine from a cold start? • Free DNS software with failover support?

  I'm looking for DNS software that can accomplish the following: Check health of all A records at set intervals If server is unresponsive after multiple successive checks, replace A record with a working server When a server is down, check it periodically. Once it's up, restore normal A records Here's an equivalent I thought of: Run DNS servers with very low TTL (minutes) Use a cron job to periodically query all webservers Use sed to replace A records if need be, and then restart DNS server I have a hard time believing there isn't already something that can accomplish the above. I'm not looking for a paid service, and I'm restricted to anything I can run with root access to a VPS. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

  I have to configure an ubuntu hardy server network interface. The service hoster told me that this is the network data for the machine: IP Range: 111.111.200.74 to 111.111.200.78 Netmask: 255.255.255.248 Broadcast: 111.111.200.79 Gateway: 111.111.200.73 Subnet: 111.111.200.72/29 I am only using the first IP address. I will update the /etc/hosts file with 111.111.200.74, but I am still unsure how the /etc/network/interfaces file should be. This is my plan: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 111.111.200.74 netmask 255.255.255.248 network 111.111.200.??? broadcast 111.111.200.79 gateway 111.111.200.73 As you can see I don't know how to build the network line. How would I calculate the data for the network line and what is the result? (I changed the first 2 octets of the subnet, they are not "111.111" in the real setup.)

• Can't get lines around table borders/cells [migrated]

  I have several web pages containing tables, for which I'd like to have line-borders around the tables and the cells. In fact, some of these pages existed for several years already, and rendered acceptly in IE6, IE7. We switched about 6 months ago to a completely different set of style sheets to change our site look and feel. We also switched to "modern" browsers such as IE8 (and because I couldn't stop Vista) to IE9. Now the borders don't render at all. I spent a day fighting with this about a month ago, and failed to fix it. It seemed that I could reduce the page down to just the barest table and IE8 would still not render the border. I think I decided IE8 was just buggy, but I'm not an HTML expert so it is more likely that I'm buggy. (I'm just getting back to this; I'll go see if I can find that reduced page). • System says memory controller not available and doesn't boot?

  Hello everybody, Recently I have had a MainBoard-problem. I've send my mainboard to service and today I got it back from the company. It is a Foxconn 520a mainboard. Now I have installed my exchanged mainboard. But now I have a problem. My system boots until the device list with IRQ entries appear. The system says "Verifying DMI-pool-data..." and nothing happens. The IRQ-device list shows that the memory-controller is not available. All other devices have got an IRQ. Bus No. Device No. Func No. Vendor/Device Class Device Class IRQ 0 0 0 10DE 0547 0500 Memory Controller NA Do you have any ideas where the problem could be? I already have disconnected all unnecessary devices like the hard disks. Perhaps it is a BIOS problem, but I don't know where I should look. Would be nice if there is any advice, Greetings, Martin

• Connecting FreeNAS 8 to Mac OS X Lion LDAP Server

  I currently have Mac OS X Lion Server running from a MacMini and want to use it purely as an LDAP server for authentication for FreeNAS 8. I have FreeNAS setup and running on a VM, all features working correctly and as expected however I cannot connect to my LDAP server (MacMini). Error message; **Nss_ldap: could not search LDAP server – server is unavailable** For LDAP service settings in FreeNAS, I know my Hostname and Base DN are correct (exact copies of what I set originally and ones that are shown in server:open directory overview) however I am unsure what to enter for Root bind DN, password and Suffix’s. I have researched into where I can find these out and other than following the FreeNAS examples it appears there is a way to find out within the Server Workgroup Manager specific to my settings – however this function is unavailable to me and cannot be ‘ticked’ to view for some strange reason. Some forums explain how Root bind DN should be uid=admin, dc=… and others cn=admin, dc=… – I’m rather confused and would appreciate your help or advice with this.

• Why am I getting permission denied installing Powershell 2.0 on Windows XP (and certain other update

  I'm working on a corporate desktop (still) running Windows XP SP2. I recently received a new PC and am reinstalling all my tools. Something is different about this one in that it won't let me install Powershell 2.0. When I do, I get a popup: You do not have permission to update Windows XP. Please contact your system administrator. This also occurs for other installs, like Service Pack 3 and Windows Installer 4.5. I'm aware this PC is under group policy restrictions, but I haven't narrowed down what restriction is preventing this install so that I can have the appropriate support team resolve it. What setting could be responsible for this?
