• Web application development platform recommendation

  Hi all I did a year's worth of Pascal, Visual Basic and C++ 15 years ago, so suffice it to say that I'm a complete n00b & lamer when it comes to this. I really do hope that this question doesn't canned, but if it does, please be so kind as to point me in the direction of where it should be posted. I have an idea, like so many others, for a web app. I don't necessarily have the capital to outsource the development of the app right now, and I probably wouldn't want to, since non-disclosure agreements can be expensive to enforce, especially in this day and age of intercontinental outsourcing. I need the app to be usable on any mobile device (eventually), primarily on the major mobile platforms at first, on the web, (pc/mac/*ix) obviously, on mobile web browsers like opera mobile, etc. I envisage the app interacting with the major social networks like fb, orkut, msn im, twitter, et al in a way where friend's are messaged and/or wall posted, a message is posted to the users wall. Geo-location functionality is a plus, considering the service/app can be location sensitive in two ways, 1, the immediate location of the user, 2. the desired location of the user. I'd like to incorporate OpenID sign on, and the flip-side, the service will require that people (service providers) list their specialities/specialisations/interests/areas of expertise, so that matches to user requests can be made by the service, while users' requests are posted into the web universe. I've probably described a glut of apps out there, but I'd appreciate feedback on the sort of platform that I should look at using, be it hosted on something like Google's app engine, or written in android friendly code, or whatever. I'm a firm believer in herd mentality, especially at the start of a project that I have very little experience in. The more opinions, the merrier!   I have taken backup of SQL Server 2008 DB on server, and download them to local environment. I am trying to restore that database and it is keep on giving me following error. An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo) ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The media family on device 'C:\go4sharepoint_1384_8481.bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3241) For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=09.00.4053&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=3241&LinkId=20476 I have tried to create a temp DB on server and tried to restore the same backup file and that works. I have also tried no. of times downloading file from server to local pc using different options on Filezila (Auto, Binary) But its not working. After that I tried to execute following command on server. BACKUP DATABASE go4sharepoint_1384_8481 TO DISK=' C:\HostingSpaces\dbname_jun14_2010_new.bak' with FORMAT And it is giving me following error. Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot open backup device 'c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\Backup\ C:\HostingSpaces\dbname_jun14_2010_new.bak'. Operating system error 123(The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. • WPF combobox loses Aero theme when using a style trigger

  I am using style triggers to change combo box to texbox if it's readonly, but for some reason when I apply the style, it cause the combobox theme to change from Aero to Windows Classic (the theme I currently have in use on my PC). Can I avoid this somehow? • Question about using ServiceModelEx's "WCFLogbook" from "Programming WCF Services" book

  I am attempting to compile/run a sample WCF application from Juval Lowy's website (author of Programming WCF Services & founder of IDesign). Of course the example application utilizes Juval's ServiceModelEx library and logs faults/errors to a "WCFLogbook" database. Unfortunately, when the sample app faults, I get the following new error: "Cannot open database "WCFLogbook" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'Bill-PC\Bill'." I suspect the error occurs as a result of not finding the "WCFLogbook" database, which I believe still needs to be created. Included in the library source directory, there are two files -WCFLogbookDataSet.xsd and WCFLogbook.sql; which neither seem to be referenced anywhere within the library code. This leads me to beleive that the sql and xsd files are there to be used to create the database somehow in SQL. Could someone please advise me if I am going in the correct direction here and if whether these files can be used to create the database (and if so, how)?

• Handling async ASMX web service exceptions

  Hi, I've developed silverlight client with makes async web services calls to a asmx web service. The problem is, I want to handle exceptions, so far as to be able to tell in the client application whether there was an exception in the webservice (and therefore will be logged local to the webservice) or whether there was a communication problem (i.e. the endpoint for the webservice was wrong). In testing both types of exceptions in my project I get the same generic exception: System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException: The remote server returned an error: NotFound. This exception is amazingly useless when an exception occured in the webservice as it clearly has been found. Is the presence of this generic error to do with security (not being allowed to see true errors)? It can't be the fact that I don't have debug strings as I'm running on a dev PC. Either way, my question is, what's the best way to handle async errors in a commercial silverlight application? Any links or ideas are most welcome! :) Thanks a lot! Andy.

• WSDLs generated by Axis2 services can't be read by SoapUI or WSDL2Java

  I'm converting some services from Apache SOAP to Axis2, so the Java service classes already exist. I created a new project in Eclipse, imported the source, made sure that the Axis2 project facets were installed, and Axis2 emitter properties are correct. Then, in Eclipse, I selected the service class and chose "Create Web Service," choosing the Axis2 runtime. The service is up and running on my PC, and when I append "?wsdl" to the service's path, I do indeed get a WSDL that I save locally. Attempting to import this into SoapUI to build a client gives the error: ERROR:org.apache.xmlbeans.XmlException: C:\projects\soapUI\Axis2\DALService.wsdl:0: error: src-resolve: type 'SOAPException@http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema' not found. The type it's referring to (SOAPException) is a holdover from the Apache SOAP services, and in the service code, I changed all "import" references in the service code (not the WSDL) from org.apache.soap.SOAPException (the old Apache SOAP package name) to javax.xml.soap.SOAPException (the Axis2 location). The code compiles and works, once I can access it, but I can't access it without generating a client. Any thoughts as to why changing the namespace of an object would keep the generated WSDLs from having the proper namespace references?

• Cannot connect to a SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services cube after installing SQL Server 2008 SP1.

  I've been developing an application that talks directly to an SSAS 2005 OLAP cube. Note that I also have SQL Server 2008 installed, so the other day I did a Windows Update and decided to include SQL Server 2008 SP1 in my update. After doing that, my SSAS 2005 cube is no longer accessible from my application. I'm able to browse the data just fine within SQL Server 2005 BI Studio Manager, but I'm not able to connect to the cube from my application. • CSS positioning is weird when reducing the viewport

  I have a little meditation for you ... I run a site using a liquid tri-col layout with a header. The layout runs nicely since more than a decade with all browsers I ever dared to try. It is based on absolute positioning in CSS. This page provides an example of the actual site. Watching the page from my tablet I found that the right column overlaps the center matter. Further investigation using Firebug showed that once the center content reaches 360px width, the right margin of the div shrinks. Why is that? Since Firefox and Android render the same, I guess that this is something, which is actually supposed to be. However, I tried to make virtue out of necessity and experimented setting min-width for body and content and made the body scroll overflow. The body actually scrolls, but the right column is positioned on the right edge of the viewport instead of the body element (Firefox). Is this intentional CSS standard? Any ideas how to solve the presentation on small displays? Thanks for your efforts,  – lars.

  The scenario is as follows, I have 3 objects (i simplified the names) named Parent, parent's child & child's child parent's child is a set in parent, and child's child is a set in child. mapping is as follows (relevant parts) parent <set name="parentset" table="pc-table" lazy="false" fetch="subselect" cascade="all-delete-orphan" inverse="true"> <key column=FK_ID_PC" on-delete="cascade"/> <one-to-many class="parentchild,parentchild-ns"/> </set> parent's child <set name="childset" table="cc-table" lazy="false" fetch="subselect" cascade="all-delete-orphan" inverse="true"> <key column="FK_ID_CC" on-delete="cascade"/> <one-to-many class="childschild,childschild-ns"/> </set> What i want to achieve is that when i delete the parent, there would be a cascade delete all the way trough to child's child. But what currently happens is this. (this is purely for mapping test purposes) getting a parent entity (works fine) IQuery query = session.CreateQuery("from Parent where ID =" + ID); IParent doc = query.UniqueResult<Parent>(); now the delete part session.Delete(doc); transaction.Commit(); After having solved the 'cannot insert null value' error with cascading and inverse i hopes this would now delete everything with this code, but only the parent is being deleted. Did i miss something in my mapping which is likely to be missed? Any hint in the right direction is more than welcome!

• Confusion about Kerberos, delegation and SPNs.

  I'm trying to write a proof-of-concept application that performs Kerberos delegation. I've written all the code, and it seems to working (I'm authenticating fine), but the resulting security context doesn't have the ISC_REQ_DELEGATE flag set. So I'm thinking that maybe one of the endpoints (client or server) is forbidden to delegate. However I'm not authenticating against an SPN. Just one domain user against another domain user. As the SPN for InitializeSecurityContext() I'm passing "[email protected]" (which is the user account under which the server application is running). As I understand, domain users have delegation enabled by default. Anyway, I asked the admin to check, and the "account is sensitive and cannot be delegated" checkbox is off. I know that if my server was running as a NETWORK SERVICE and I used an SPN to connect to it, then I'd need the computer account in AD to have the "Trust computer for delegation" checkbox checked (off by default), but... this is not the case, right? Or is it? Also - when the checkbox in the computer account is set, do the changes take place immediately, or must I reboot the server PC or wait for a while?

• MVC App Works in Visual Studio, but not IIS7

  Working on a an ASP.NET MVC Project, and I'm having some difficulties deploying to a shared dev server. Locally, when debugging using the local Visual Studio 2008 server, everything works peachy. However, once deployed, I receive the following error: Parser Error Description: An error occurred during the parsing of a resource required to service this request.   I have no experience compiling code other than using Visual Studio's Build command. I am hoping we can create a step by step guide for compiling mod_python on windows. Please be as descriptive as possible. This is what I've done so far: Download and install python 2.6.2 Download and install apache 2.2.11 Download the most recent source code for mod_python from svn From here I'm lost to what the next step is. • Why is software quality so problematic?

  Even when viewing the subject in the most objective way possible, it is clear that software, as a product, generally suffers from low quality. Take for example a house built from scratch. Usually, the house will function as it is supposed to. It will stand for many years to come, the roof will support heavy weather conditions, the doors and the windows will do their job, the foundations will not collapse even when the house is fully populated. Sure, minor problemsdo occur, like a leaking faucet or a bad paint job, but these are not critical. Software, on the other hand is much more susceptible to suffer from bad quality: unexpected crashes, erroneous behavior, miscellaneous bugs, etc. Sure, there are many software projects and products which show high quality and are very reliable. But lots of software products do not fall in this category. Take into consideration paradigms like TDD which its popularity is on the rise in the past few years. Why is this? Why do people have to fear that their software will not work or crash? (Do you walk into a house fearing its foundations will collapse?) Why is software - subjectively - so full of bugs? Possible reasons: Modern software engineering exists for only a few decades, a small time period compared to other forms of engineering/production. Software is very complicated with layers upon layers of complexity, integrating them all is not trivial. Software development is relatively easy to start with, anyone can write a simple program on his PC, which leads to amateur software leaking into the market. Tight budgets and timeframes do not allow complete and high quality development and extensive testing. How do you explain this issue, and do you see software quality advancing in the near future?

• .NET assembly cache / ngen / jit image warm-up and cool-down behavior

  Hi, I have an Input Method (IME) program built with C#.NET 2.0 DLL through C++/CLI. Since an IME is always attaching to another application, the C#.NET DLL seems not able to avoid image address rebasing. Although I have applied ngen to create a native image of that C#.NET 2.0 DLL and installed it into Global Assembly Cache, it didn't improved much, approximately 12 sec. down to 9 sec. on a slow PIII level PC. Therefore I uses a small application, which loads all the components referenced by the C#.NET DLL at the boot up time, to "warm up" the native image of that DLL. It works fine to speed up the loading time to 0.5 sec. However, it only worked for a while. About 30 min. later, it seems to "cool down" again. Is there any way to control the behavior of GAC or native image to be always "hot"? Is this exactly a image address rebasing problem? Thank you for your precious time. Sincerely, Mike

• Building Cross Platform app - recommendation

  Hi, I need to build a fairly simple app but it needs to work on both PC and Mac. It also needs to be redistributable on a disc or usb drive as a standalone desktop app. Initially I thought AIR would be perfect for this (it ticks all the API requirements), but the difficulty is making it distributable, as the app would require the AIR runtime to be installed to run. I came across Shu Player as an option as it seems to be able to package the AIR runtime with the app and do a (silent?) install. However this seems to break the T&C from Adobe (as outlined here) so I'm not sure about the legality. Another option could be Zinc but I haven't tested it so I'm not sure how well it'll fit the bill. What would you recommend or suggest I check out? Any suggestion much appreciated EDIT: There's a few more discussions on mono usage (though no real conclusion): Here and Here EDIT2: Titanium could also fit the bill maybe, will check it out. In order to calculate the difference between dates, I guess that I need to add additional calculated value to the result of the last Select-Object, or pipe the result to another Select-Object with the calculation as additional property or column. In order to do it, I need to get the previous row's FreeSpace value. Not sure if it is possible and how?

  Hello , I am using WAMP server on Windows XP. - Apache 2.2.11 - MySQL 5.1.36 (INNODB engine) - PHP 5.3.0 I observe that my WAMP server crashes in the following scenarios 1) IF I use a Low end PC ( low processor speed and low RAM) 2) After making some changes to httpd.conf file .For eg changing the Allow from IP address . But here it crashes only once and then it starts to work fine. 3) Random crashes CRASH LOG szAppName : httpd.exe szAppVer : 2.2.11.0 szModName : php5ts.dll szModVer : 5.3.0.0 offset : 0000c309 C:\DOCUME~1\blrcom\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERc677.dir00\httpd.exe.mdmp C:\DOCUME~1\blrcom\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERc677.dir00\appcompat.txt My questions 1) Does high CPU utilization/LOW RAM can also cause the HTTP server to crash ? 2) excessive file reading as in every 10 seconds ? 3) unlimited script execution time . I have set the maximum execution time in php script to 0 as my script has to execute for sometimes 2-3 days. Is there any way to avoid this ? 4) Access to Database ?
