• Setting up a local mail server

  This is what I want and I am having issues finding a solution. I have a number of websites (around 5) each with an email account. I have a server at my office and I would like to centralize it. I have a workstation too. What I want to happen is for the server to receive all emails from all those websites (from the web servers) and then connect my workstation to my local server to grab the emails from there. As the server downloads the emails, I would like them to be stored. Also, if I connect another workstation, I want the 2 workstations to sync. So if an email is read on one, it shows up as read on the other. Ideas? I am able to virtualize a Linus environment if that helps.

• Single web app, multiple web servers

  I have a problem of load balancing. We developed a web app for nearly 1500 users. As the number of users increased we are unable to serve the requests in a timely manner. It takes around 10 to 20 seconds to load a page. Under heavy load it can take one minute to serve the page. We need to solve this situation so that each request is served in 2 or 3 seconds. • How do I get my internal HDD to mount at startup?

  It's either not intuitive or not working in Ubuntu 14.04. I want to mount my internal HDD at at startup (I boot from an SSD). I attempt to set this, following this procedure: Open Disks utility Select the disk Below the disk's Volumes, click on the More actions button Select Edit Mount Options... Select Automatic Mount Options "Off" Under Mount Options, ensure that Mount at startup is selected Click OK Enter password into Authenticate dialog box Restart but this procedure doesn't work. Upon rebooting, and after Grub attempts to start Ubuntu, I receive the error message "An error occurred while mounting /mnt/4f721fc0-8072-453f-b48f-ca686bd89549. Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery". That identifier "4f721fc0-8072-453f-b48f-ca686bd89549" was automatically assigned by Ubuntu. I press S and the boot process continues OK. If I try to mount the disk immediately after booting, I receive the error message "Unable to access "Storage"" (I named the volume Storage). So then I start the Disks utility and set it to Automatic Mount Options "On" and reboot. To me, it seems like this should work, but it doesn't.   i am supporting a number of bespoke applications at the minute and searching through their very non standard logs is a nightmare, so im looking for a tool which can do the following - load large text files search through multiple files at once and display all results can search with regex can be used to view and search unstructured text files There are some great looking log tools available but they all seem to be focused on structured logs, where the logs i deal with most days are just flat text files. I am currently using notepad++ but that has its own annoyances so im hoping there is a dedicated log analysis tool that i havent found yet.

• Ubuntu synaptics touchpad is too sensitive

  I recently switched from Windows to Linux (Linux Mint specifically) on my IBM T61 laptop. Since making the switch, my touchpad has been nearly unusable. When I place one finger on the touchpad, without moving it, the cursor bobs around in a small area as if I am making a number of small movements. I think the cursor is moving around because the sensitivity is too high - just rotating the tip of my finger in place moves the cursor over about one-third of the screen. My trackpad does not suffer from the same problem. I have lowered the sensitivity in the mouse settings to its minimum and I have tried to follow the advice from http://iruel430.blogspot.com/2010/06/lowering-mouse-sensitivity-in-ubuntu.html and also reduce laptop touch pad sensitivity in ubuntu. But, in both cases, my touchpad still has the same behavior. Perhaps there is an xinput setting I am overlooking? Is there a better driver I can use for my T61?

• Replacement for Picasa [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What is the best alternative to Picasa? I use Picasa not because it is a great photo manager -- it's not, the manager is "sort of OK" for my taste. However, it combines a passable photo manager with a good "quick and dirty" image editor. It has the basic functions like cropping, resizing, contrast and color adjustment, and the one great feature -- "I'm feeling lucky" button, that works in 90% of the cases. Also, from time to time, I use one or two of the effects (like saturation or sharpening). GIMP is great and I use it on a regular basis, but in most cases I just want to go quickly through the photographs of my kids birthday and make them more presentable without much fuss. I'm looking for a native, open source replacement, something that would not miss the editing capabilities of Picasa and would allow me to quickly go through a collection of photographs and make basic edits. A function similar to "I'm feeling lucky" (automatic adjustment of contrast, color and brightness) would be most welcome. EDIT: Yes, I have already tried a number of alternatives, if it is necessary I can produce a detailed list here, along with the problems I found. I'm posting that question because I hope to see a new name.

• Too many files open issue (in CentOS)

  Recently I ran into this issue in one of our production machines. The actual issue from PHP looked like this: fopen(dberror_20110308.txt): failed to open stream: Too many open files I am running LAMP stack along with memcache in this machine. I also run a couple of Java applications in this machine. While I did increase the limit on the number of files that can be opened to 10000 (from 1024), I would really like to know if there is an easy way to track this (# of files open at any moment) as a metric. I know lsof is a command which will list the file descriptors opened by processes. Wondering if there is any other better (in terms of report) way of tracking this using say, nagios.

  Hello all. I have just inherited a network at my work- 1 primary server and about 65 computers running XP. All machines have Gigabit ethernet cards and all are connected through Gigabit switches and cat. 6 cables. The workstations send large numbers of image files to the server where they are held until they need to go to a printer. And I'm talking Gigs of files. We get a network slowdown when large number of files are coming from the workstations at the same time large numbers are also going the the printers. All machines have to be on the same subnet because of some proprietary software. Is there anything I can do to lessen this logjam? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Alias one set of Subdomains to another

  I have to domains that I want to effectively mirror one another on select subdomains. Let's say they are pirates.com and ninjas.com and i want ninjas to mirror the content on pirates. When I visit foo.ninjas.com I want to see the content on foo.pirates.com. Due to app restrictions I need to do this in DNS for an undefined number of subdomains. I was under the impression i could do this with a CNAME, but it appears that setting a CNAME for * subdomain of the ninjas.com domain to point to pirates.com will make any subdomain of ninjas.com point at pirates.com instead of the associated subdomain. I.e. foo.ninjas.com would reference pirates.com instead of foo.pirates.com. Is there a way to do this using DNS? Am I missing something basic?

  I want to create program which will be in use for few computers connected in local network. Basically the program aim is to keep track of all tables in a bar ( lets say ), which are reserved. When some user book a table as reserved the program should broadcast the table number to all other Pc's and mark the table as reserved. Since all computers use the same program, how is possible to create communication between all of them ? Should i use sockets to achieve this? If it matters, all of the computers have installed Linux OS,and the app will be developed in ruby,perl or php. Thank you.

  How do I make it stop after a certain amount of rows? I've taken a VBA course and my teacher explained how to delete empty rows. I'm now trying to put this in place but my macro isn't stopping. I thought I had limited it to 200 rows. I'm missing something important. Any pointers much appreciated. • How Export Result of MySQL Query on PHPMyAdmin 3.4.3?

  1) I've got a 30K row table. 2) When I run a long, 50-line query on that table, a GROUP function reduces the number of rows to 7K. 3) I want to export the grouped 7K rows as a new table, or save them as a CSV. When I attempt to export, instead of getting the grouped 7K rows, I get the old, pre-query 30K rows. What am I doing wrong, and what should I be doing? NOTE: I'm not a coder, so I'd really appreciate a solution that just used the PHPMyAdmin GUI. Thanks!

• Apache Connection vs. Request

  I apologize in advance if this is a basic question, but I am quite confused after reading the Apache documentation and other tutorials. Does a single Apache prefork process serve all HTTP requests for a given client? That's what I thought, but when I reduce maxclients down to a low number, my page load times go to a crawl. This despite the fact I'm the only client on the server in question. This would suggest each process serves a single HTTP request at a time, rather than serving all requests within the TimeOut window. So if a single webpage requires 15 HTTP requests to load fully, do I require 15 prefork Apache processes to optimally serve it?

  I have some portable apps and when I download them they extract to a normal directory structure, but the structure includes a version number, How do I create a start-up shortcut to the program so it doesn’t break when the application is updated? For example: I can create a shortcut to “D:\PortableApp\V1\prog.exe” and place the shortcut into Startup items and it works fine. Now the program is updated to V1.1.   In varnishhist the x-axis shows the time varnish took between getting the request from the kernel and sending it back to kernel. The y-axis shows the number of requests. | => cache hit # => cache miss That is what I understood from the manpage. Correct me if I'm wrong. Yet there is one thing I'm unsure about. The pipes (|) on the far left side, do they also stand for cache hits or are they just there to print the y-axis? I'm voting for the latter, but would like to be sure.

  I have a website, and I want to host it on my own computer, but I'm wondering if it's good enough. The website checks if the user is logged in and then displays 15 items (title, description) from a mysql database and the rating (stored in another database) and the comments (another database) for each item. It also displays some stats (number of items, comments). I also have an image for each item. My specs are: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ 2.90 GHz RAM: 4.00GB Windows 7 64bit So what do you think, how much visitors and items could it handle (at once or daily) ? My internet connection is good, around 7-10 mb upload and same download speed

• Can time skew on Windows be reduced to +/- 5ms?

  A number of our Windows workstations, running ntpd, simply cannot keep time. Our Linux workstations and servers running the same ntpd config don't have this problem, they can stay within +/- 5ms of skew. The Windows hosts easily drift to seconds and sometimes minutes apart. This is a problem for us. The only common factor we have been able to isolate is that the hosts that can't keep time are running Windows. Is there something fundamentally impossible with what we're trying to do?

• How to test which button is stuck

  My laptop's keyboard is prone to buttons sticking. The fix is to just press the same button again. Now when it is the letter/number keys are stuck, it's just a matter of putting the cursor in a text field, and seeing what characters appear. However, when it is one of the modifier keys, or tab, or enter or a few other buttons, it gets harder to tell which key is to blame. Trying to type can result in all sort of shortcuts being triggered. Is there anyway to test what input is being recieved? Also, I'm guessing this is a hardware issue, but if anyone knows of any possible causes/solutions it'd be appreciated. It's a Dell Studio 17, and the problem occurs under Windows and Linux.

• Is iTunes touching my library files automatically and/or in the background?

  I am currently using a service called Cubby (it is like Dropbox) to sync my iTunes library between several computers. I would expect then that syncing only occurs when I add to or delete from the library. But I notice that often the Cubby app will be actively syncing when I haven't made any changes, and it will give notifications that (for example) a song changed which I definitely did not recently add/remove. Likewise I have lately been seeing weird changes in filename and track number tags. I wonder if this is iTunes trying to organize something automatically and failing? So does anyone know if iTunes will routinely modify your library files and how/why? What is it doing?

• Creating fillable PDF form with dynamically updated fields

  Is there a way to create fillable PDF forms where a set of fields gets their data when one of the fields is filled out? The normal use case would be application form, where your name or membership number has to be entered on the top of each page. I am using LibreOffice 3.5.4.2. In a earlier version I was able to get the desired effect if I left the field names to be the same (i.e. the field names as seen in the Form Navigator). I'm open for using any free software tool. There is a similiar question asked elsewhere at ask.libreoffice.org.
