  • Neural Networks or Human-computer interaction

    I will be entering my third year of university in my next academic year, once I've finished my placement year as a web developer, and I would like to hear some opinions on the two modules in the Title. I'm interested in both, however I want to pick one that will be relevant to my career and that I can apply to systems I develop. I'm doing an Internet Computing degree, it covers web development, networking, database work and programming. Though I have had myself set on becoming a web developer I'm not so sure about that any more so am trying not to limit myself to that area of development. I know HCI would help me as a web developer, but do you think it's worth it? Do you think Neural Network knowledge could help me realistically in a system I write in the future? Thanks. EDIT: Hi guys, I thought it would be useful to follow-up with what I decided to do and how it's worked out. I picked Artificial Neural Networks over HCI, and I've really enjoyed it. Having a peek into cognitive science and machine learning has ignited my interest for the subject area, and I will be hoping to take on a postgraduate project a few years from now when I can afford it. I have got a job which I am starting after my final exams (which are in a few days) and I was indeed asked if I had done a module in HCI or similar. It didn't seem to matter, as it isn't a front-end developer position! I would recommend taking the module if you have it as an option, as well as any module consisting of biological computation, it will open up more doors should you want to go onto postgraduate research in the future.     It's well know that 1) the way computers actually work 2) the way computers are protrayed in movies are not the same. In particular (2) looks much much cooler than (1). Where can I learn more about making flashy, superficially useful but deepdown useless fancy graphics UIs like that? It's almost in the realm of "hollywood special effects" -- like fire/smoke/fire, but I don't want natural phenomenon; I want user interfaces. Concrete question: where can I learn about creating flashy, cool looking (though not necessairly useful) user interfaces? [Perferably in OpenGL]

    Hello, .... ‹BÿЃÀ‰D$Ç„$  ....... that's what happens when you open (notepad) such a file that I'm talking about How do algorithms decode that information and when does a program use/generate it ? Does some notepad-like application exist that open such files and transform them to readable code/data ? Any more information which will clarify about these files will be very helpful.     Hello, I really would like to write an app or apps for iPhone / iPad. I've never done this so far because most of my work has been in windows environment. I recently got an i7 with windows 7 and love it, and this is what I am using to do development on currently. I would love to try out writing a simple App on a mac for either an iPhone or iPad. The question I had was are there any developers using a macbook to do windows based programming as well as writing apps? And what is their setups like? (example: using bootcamp) Most importantly, is it recommended based on the experience they had doing so? any problems / performance issue?   • Computer crashes if left unattended AND running uTorrent, what could be?

    I have a weird problem in which, if I leave my computer unattended, AND I leave uTorrent open, downloading/seeding, the computer simply crashes after about 20 / 30 minutes (don't know exactly since if I leave it, and come back later, it has already restarted or has a BSOD.) If I leave the computer alone for undefined time WITHOUT uTorrent, nothing happens, and if I am constantly using the computer while using uTorrent, no problem either (I could be using it all day with uT open and it doesn't crash). So what could it be that the combination of those cases makes the computer crash? I have already checked the power management so the computer never enters stand by mode, sleep, hibernate, etc. (the only thing I do is turn off the display). A first guess is that maybe one of my external hard drives DO sleep or enters in a "low power" mode or something if I don't use the PC. but since uT is running MAYBE tries to use that drive, and makes it crash. Could that be possible? How to know for sure if the external drive does that, and to prevent it from doing so. Any more ideas of what may be causing that? Specs: Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit, 2 GB RAM. Latest version of uTorrent (although it has been happening for a while now). UPDATE: i just found out that uTorrent has Disk cache options ( preferences - advanced - disk cache ). I have no idea if that may be causing problems with my external drive, hence causing the crash.

  • Building 64bit Qt on 32bit Xp computer

    I'm trying to build Qt in a shared 64 bit mode on my 32bit XP system. I can configure the QMake and start the 64bit build. The problem is that when the build starts, the first thing that happens in that the process builds ui, moc and rcc utility compilers in 64 bit mode, then tries to run them on my 32bit machine. Does anyone know how to configure the build so that it does not build those compilers first?

  • Computer Invisible On Domain

    Good afternoon, I'm sorry that this isn't a programming question specifically, but stackoverflow has been great at answering questions in the past, so I thought I'd give it a shot. One of our Linux users attempted to install Cygwin on our Windows Server 2008 Domain Controller. Now it is no longer possible to browse the domain and see all of the computers. For example, \\my_domain_name will just bring up a username/password dialog box (that will not accept any username or password, even the domain administrator) and no computers will ever be listed. However, I can still connect to computers based on their name or IP address. So \\eridanus or \\192.168.1.85 still work to connect to the shared directories of computers on our network. Does anyone know where I can find these settings? and how I can fix this problem? Thanks, Giawa

  • Allocated Private Bytes keeps going up in one computer but not the other

    OK, this may sound weird, but here goes. There are 2 computers, A (Pentium D) and B (Quad Core) with almost the same amount of RAM. If I run the same code on both computers, the allocated private bytes in A never goes down resulting in a crash later on. In B it looks like the private bytes is constantly deallocated and everything looks fine. In both computers, the working set is deallocated and allocated similarly. Could this be an issue with manifests or DLLs (system)? I'm clueless. Note: I observed the utilized memory with Process Explorer.

  • How to receive a datastream from a device on your computer, in C#

    I plan to build a small audio-recorder app in C#. My laptop has a built in Microphone that's always active, so I want to use that as an early-stage test. I would simply start recording, save the file as a .wav or even use the LAME dll to make it into an MP3. The problem is, I don't know how to contact that microphone. Do I use a library that can detect a device, or do I just catch a stream of bytes from the port that the device is on? I don't have any experience with receiving data from connected devices. I suppose that I'll need to enter all the data into a byte array and then Serialize that into a WAV file, but I'm not sure. Can I get some pointers on this subject?

I want to save the changes in a batch file or some archive and then email them to another dev/myself/etc.. so that they can take a look at my changes and apply them to their working copy.   • Emulating a computer running MS-DOS

    Writing emulators has always fascinated me. Now I want to write an emulator for an IBM PC and run MS-DOS on it (I've got the floppy image files). I have good experience in C++ and C and basic knowledge of assembler and the architecture of a CPU. I also know that there are thousands of emulators out there doing exactly what I want to do, but I'd be doing this for pure joy only. How much work do I have to expect? (If my goal is to boot DOS and create a text file with it, all emulated) What CPU should I emulate ? Where can I find documentation on how the machine code is organized and which opcodes mean what, so I can unpack and execute them correctly with my emulator? Does MS-DOS still run on the newest generations of processors? Would it theoretically be able to natively run on a 64-bit AMD Phenom 2 processor w/ a modern mainboard, HDD, RAM, etc.? What else, besides emulating the CPU, could be an important factor (in terms of difficulty)? I would only aim for outputting / inputting text to the system via the host system's console, no sound or other more advanced IO etc. Have you written an emulator yet? What was your first one for? How hard was it? Do you have any special tips for me? Thanks in advance

    I'm current working on a program that scans my network and discoveres computers and devices on the network. I use various operations to find data on the devices I discover, but want to distinguish the network devices from computers. And I'm wondering if anyone knows how I could do this? I looked a bit at SNMP, and tried connecting to my network printer, router and modem. But I seem to only be able to connect to the printer, neither the router or modem responds. Is there another way to identify what kind of a device an IP address belongs to?

  • Detecting the axis of rotation from a pointcloud

    I'm trying to auto-detect the axis of rotation on a 3d pointcloud. In other words, if I took a small 3d pointcloud, chose a single axis of rotation, and make several copies of the points at different rotation angles, then I get a larger pointcloud. The input to my algorithm is the larger pointcloud, and the desired output is the single axis of symmetry. And eventually I'm going to compute the correspondences between points that are rotations of each other. The size of the larger pointcloud is on the order of 100K points, and the number of rotational copies made is unknown. The rotation angles in my case have constant deltas, but don't necessarily span 360 degrees. For example, I might have 0, 20, 40, 60. Or I might have 0, 90, 180, 270. But I won't have 0, 13, 78, 212 (or if I do, I don't care to detect it). This seems like a computer vision problem, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to precisely find the axis. The input will generally be very clean, close to float accuracy.

  • C++: recursively computer all permutaions of digits 0 - 9

    I have a homework assignment where part of the requirement is to recursively compute all the permutations of integers 0 - 9. The professor actually gave us the algorithm for this part of the question. I've finished the rest of the assignment, but I can't get the permute function working...I'm implementing it exactly like it was shown on the assignment information. However, when I run it each permutation is repeated multiple times (and I'm not sure if I'm even getting all the correct permutations.) I think he must've made a mistake on the assignment instructions. I've been working on this for a couple of hours and can't seem to figure out where I'm going wrong. Can anybody help point me in the right direction? Here's the current code: void permute(int v[], int curr) { for (int i = curr; i < MAX; i++) { swap(v[i], v[curr]); permute(v, curr + 1); swap(v[curr], v[i]); } } EDIT: Actually, right after posting this I realized it has to do with the swap, right? Because right now i and curr are the same, so I'm swapping identical numbers. Hm, should it be swap(v[i], v[curr+1])?

I have taken a look at big CMS systems like umbraco and Dotnetnuke and said to myself that these developers must have decades of programming experience.     I'm looking for the most official definition of CSCI / Configuration Item - not just what it is but what we have to deliver / can expect when a contract defines subsystems which shall be developed as configuration items. I spend some time with my famous search tool and found a lot of explanations for CSCI (wikipedia, acronym directories, ...) but I haven't found a standard or a pointer to a standard (like ISO-xxx) yet which tells (1) what it is and (2) what has to be done from a QM/CM point of view. I just ask, because a contractors QM representative stated during an acceptance test, that CI only requires to not forget the CI in the configuration plan and to assign a serial number ... I expected to see some SRS, SDD, ICD, SVD, SIP, ... documents and acceptance test documentation for those subsystems...

  • SharePoint Returning a 401.1 for a Specific User/Computer

    We have a SharePoint Services 3.0 site set up supporting about 300 users right now. This report is isolated and has never been duplicated. We have one AD user who cannot log into the SharePoint site with his account from his machine and is subsequently returned a 401.1 error. If any other user tries to log on with their account from his machine, it works okay. If he moves to another machine and logs on, it works okay. The only solution to this point has been to install FireFox on the machine. When he authenticates with FF, everything is okay. Remedies tried so far: Cleared cookies/cache Turned off/on Integrated Windows Authentication in IE Downgraded IE 8 to IE 6 Removed site from Intranet Sites zone Renamed the machine Disjoined/Rejoined Domain
