• Can I run Ubuntu directly under Windows 8?

  Text below is extract from the article, Windows 8 Tip: Virtualize with Hyper-V. Better still, Windows Virtual PC offered a feature called XP Mode, free for users of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate, which included a full working copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 3. But the big deal here is that as you installed applications in the virtual copy of XP, they would be made available through Windows 7’s Start Menu. And you could run these applications, side-by-side, with Windows 7 applications on the Windows 7 desktop. It was a seamless, integrated experience, ideal for those one-off application compatibility issues. I was thinking to install VirtualBox in Windows 8 and then run Ubuntu as guess OS. Since Hyper-V is a Type-0 hipervisor, may I know does this bring the same benefit if I have Ubuntu Linux install as a virtual guess OS? Meaning, if I turning the Ubuntu on (the guess OS), does the Ubuntu still able to access the hardware information like nVidia display card or processor information? I'm just curious to know can this be done?

• Run preseed commands as specific user / switching users

  Beside the usual setup where I create a normal user foo, I want to run a few d-i preseed/late_command commands as that foo user. My initial thought was to simply call those commands with sudo, e.g: d-i preseed/late_command in-target echo "<pwd>" | sudo -Si <command>. This works for some sort of commands. However the problem is that some of the commands load up shell scripts which require to not be run with sudo. Issuing a su -c "<command>" would be an alternative, but su does not offer the possibility to read the password from stdin. Is it safe to jump around between the users using su (And if yes, how do I provide the stdin? and does it work or just result in a su: must be run from a terminal) or would this cause issues?

  Hello, Environment: Windows Server 2008 R2 fully patched, working as Domain Controller in Win 2003 native domain. Users started to report problems with share, it turned out that server service won't start. I've scrambled google but can't find a thing. Any ideas will be appreciated. • Where to run Java and PHP code continuously

  I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum for a question like this, but you have to start asking questions somewhere to get anywhere :) The question is pretty simple: I need a server where I can run Java and PHP scripts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I need to be able to access this server via SSH, and I need to be able to retrieve the data generated by scripts using SCP. Also, I need to be able to run 10-20 scripts simultaneously. What is the name of the thing I should be looking for? Is it a dedicated server? I'm confused for 2 reasons: 1) because there seem to be all kinds of servers out there; 2) because most companies advertising dedicated servers seem to be aiming them at people who want to host websites. But I don't want to host a website; I just want to run my code.

  How do I get Ubuntu upstart to not hang on interactive start & stop? I have created many upstart scripts that work fine during init, but often hang when I enter them at the console. If I CTRL+C out, all that happens is that the job changes state. The script is never run. I’m running Ubuntu Lucid on a Xen virtual server with a Linux 2.6.39 kernel.   HI, I have determine that my 2nd server which fail to start because of this entry in conf. Once I remove this entry, the server start up as normal.   Since we rebuilt our servers to windows servers 2008 x64 r2 we have perpetual problems with scheduled backup (shadow copy). In the Application event log, the following events are logged on both nodes: The description for Event ID 4112 from source TsmVssPlugin cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: VSS processing encountered error 'VSS_E_UNEXPECTED_PROVIDER_ERROR' in the Volume Shadow Copy API 'AddToSnapshotSet'. For more information, see the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager client error log. Re installing TSM didn't change anything and still logging same events. TSM Error log file shows following: ANS1327W The snapshot operation for 'C:' failed with error code: -1. ANS5250E An unexpected error was encountered. • VSS Post Backup failures for Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 virtual machines

  We've been seeing strange errors with Volume Shadow Copy services on our Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 host. It appears to be failing on a strange mountpoint in the C:\WINDOWS\Temp\ folders, which I believe is used by VSS to mount a writeable image file. To summarize: The Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Writer continually goes into a failed retryable state The Virtual Server log reports errors during the Post Backup phase VSS reports errors backing up a mount point of unknown origins The mount point causes NTFS and ftdisk errors The host is x86 Windows Server 2003 Standard, SP2. The virtual machine is the same. Both use basic disks. Here is the writer state: Writer name: 'Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Writer' Writer Id: {76afb926-87ad-4a20-a50f-cdc69412ddfc} Writer Instance Id: {78df98e2-bf19-4804-890b-15865efef3bd} State: [11] Failed Last error: Retryable error From the Virtual Server log: Virtual Server - Vss Writer - Event ID: 1035: The VSS writer for Virtual Server failed during the PostBackup phase. The guest shadow copies did not get exposed on the host machine, after mounting all the virtual hard disks of the virtual machine VMACHINE. From the Application log: VSS - None - Event ID: 12290: Volume Shadow Copy Service warning: GetVolumeInformationW( \\?\Volume{fb84bae7-87f5-11dd-9832-001cc4961ca6}\,NULL,0, NULL,NULL,[0x00000000], , 260) == 0x0000045d. hr = 0x00000000. From the System log: Ntfs - Disk - Event ID: 55: The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:\WINDOWS\Temp\ {fb84bae7-87f5-11dd-9832-001cc49.... My current theory is that VSS creates a mount point for an image file of the VHD, then the software panics for some reason, leaving everything in an inconsistent state. Removing the mount point doesn't resolve the problem. All of the other disks check out fine with CHKDSK. There's no exclusion option for VHDs or to turn off online backups. Has anyone seen this kind of thing before or point me in the right direction for getting more information about the mount point and it's origins? I haven't been able to trace what application is creating that mount point.

• Long 'pause' after copying large files on windows 2008

  I have a mystery regarding pauses after file copies on windows server 2088 (and other releases) When copying large files, like vhds, to locally attached USB disks I often see a long pause after the copy has completed 100%. As an example: robocopying vhd files. The bytes read/written count matches the vhd file size and robocopy shows 100% but it pauses for several minutes. If I do nothing it will continue, but I will have to wait for quite some time - about the same amount of time as it took to get to 100%. The bytes read/bytes written counters for robocopy do not change. My first thought was that the AV had to scan it, but I'm looking at a machine right now which doesn't have an AV installed and this is occurring, so impossible. No other processes are showing read/write byte counts as going up. The behavior is the same if I use the copy command or xcopy. I've seen this on other systems but have never worked out what the cause is. Anyone got any suggestions as to what might be going on?

• Hyper-V vss-writer not making current copies [migrated]

  I'm using diskshadow to backup live Hyper-V machines on a Windows 2008 server. The backup consists of 3 scripts, the first will create the shadow copies and expose them, the second uses robocopy to copy them to a remote location and the third unexposes the shadow copies again. The first script – the one that runs correctly but fails to do what it's supposed to: # DiskShadow script file to backup VM from a Hyper-V host # First, delete any shadow copies of the drives. System Drives needs to be included. Delete Shadows volume C: Delete Shadows volume D: Delete Shadows volume E: #Ensure that shadow copies will persist after DiskShadow has run set context persistent # make sure the path already exists set verbose on begin backup add volume D: alias VirtualDisk add volume C: alias SystemDrive # verify the "Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer" writer will be included in the snapshot # NOTE: The writer GUID is exclusive for this install/machine, must be changed on other machines! writer verify {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de} create end backup # Backup is exposed as drive X: make sure your drive letter X is not in use Expose %VirtualDisk% X: Exit The next is just a robocopy and then an unexpose. Now, when I run the above script, I get no errors from it, except that the "BITS" writer has been excluded because none of its components are included. That's okay because I really only need the Hyper-V writer. Also I double checked the GUID for the writer, it's correct. During the time when the Hyper-V writer becomes active, 2 things will happen on the guest machines: The Debian/Linux machine will go to a saved state and restore when done, all fine. The Windows guests will "creating vss snapshop-sets" or something similar. Then X: gets exposed and I can copy the .vhd files over. The problem is, for some reason, the VHD files I get over seems to be old copies, they miss files, users and updates that are on the actual machines. I also tried putting the machines in a saved sate manually, didn't change the outcome. I hope someone here has an idea of how to solve this.

• Vbscript - Checking each subfolder for files and copy files

  I'm trying to get this script to work. It's basically supposed to mirror two sets of folders and make sure they are exactly the same. If a folder is missing, the folder and it's content should be copied. Then the script should compare the DateModified attribute and only copy the files if the source file is newer than the destination file. I'm trying to get together a script that does exactly that. And so far I've been able to check all subfolder if they exist and then create them if they don't. Then I've been able to scan the top source folder for it's files and copy them if they don't exist or if the DateModified attribute is newer on the source file. What remains is basically scanning each subfolder for its files and copy them if they don't exist or if the DateModified stamp is newer. • Trying to exclude certain extensions doing a recursive copy (MSBuild)

• Good ways to dynamically generate the start image of an iPhone/iPad app

  I'm self-learning iPhone development and I see that one of the aspects of an iPhone/iPad app is the start image that gets displayed when your app is run. I'd like my start image to display some basic info about the user when the app is launched, but that info has to first be collected by the user when the app is first run. That tells me that I either need to dynamically generate the start image after the user enters their information or I need to place a label of some sort on top of my static start image in order to accomplish this. The first time the app launched and before the user enters their info, the start image can be anything or nothing at all, I'm not concerned about this. So, my two questions are this... Can you place controls, like a label, on top of the start image when your app is launched? If not, what's a good approach to dynamically generating the start image after the app is launched for the first time and the user info is collected? Thanks so much in advance for your help! • Cannot run a JUnit test case containing threads from Eclipse

  I am running JUnit test case from Eclipse 3.4.1 . This test case creates a class which starts a thread to do some stuff. When the test method ends it seems that Eclipse is forcibly shutting down the thread. If I run the same test from the command line, then the thread runs properly. Somehow I do not remember running into such problems with Eclipse before. Is this something that was always present in Eclipse or did they add it in 3.4.x ? Here is an example: When I run this test from Eclipse, I get a few printts of the cnt (till about 1800) and then the test case is terminated utomatically. • Copy whole SQL Server database into JSON from Python

  I facing an atypical conversion problem. About a decade ago I coded up a large site in ASP. Over the years this turned into ASP.NET but kept the same database. I've just re-done the site in Django and I've copied all the core data but before I cancel my account with the host, I need to make sure I've got a long-term backup of the data so if it turns out I'm missing something, I can copy it from a local copy. To complicate matters, I no longer have Windows. I moved to Ubuntu on all my machines some time back. I could ask the host to send me a backup but having no access to a machine with MSSQL, I wouldn't be able to use that if I needed to. So I'm looking for something that does: db = {} for table in database: db[table.name] = [row for row in table] And then I could serialize db off somewhere for later consumption... But how do I do the table iteration? Is there an easier way to do all of this? Can MSSQL do a cross-platform SQLDump (inc data)? For previous MSSQL I've used pymssql but I don't know how to iterate the tables and copy rows (ideally with column headers so I can tell what the data is). I'm not looking for much code but I need a poke in the right direction.

• Copy an entity in Google App Engine datastore in Python without knowing property names at 'compile'

  In a Python Google App Engine app I'm writing, I have an entity stored in the datastore that I need to retrieve, make an exact copy of it (with the exception of the key), and then put this entity back in. How should I do this? In particular, are there any caveats or tricks I need to be aware of when doing this so that I get a copy of the sort I expect and not something else. ETA: Well, I tried it out and I did run into problems. I would like to make my copy in such a way that I don't have to know the names of the properties when I write the code. My thinking was to do this: #theThing = a particular entity we pull from the datastore with model Thing copyThing = Thing(user = user) for thingProperty in theThing.properties(): copyThing.__setattr__(thingProperty[0], thingProperty[1]) This executes without any errors... until I try to pull copyThing from the datastore, at which point I discover that all of the properties are set to None (with the exception of the user and key, obviously). So clearly this code is doing something, since it's replacing the defaults with None (all of the properties have a default value set), but not at all what I want. Suggestions?

  Hi, I am having an issue when starting the tests under debug mode in Visual Studio 2008 Team Test where it gives the following error: "Failed to queue test run '{user@machinename}': Object reference not set to an instance of an object." I googled for the error but no joy. Don't even understand what it means as it is too brief. Has anyone come across this? Note that I can run tests fine if I am not debugging and I get the same error irrespective of the test I run. • Using shared_ptr to implement RCU (read-copy-update)?

  I'm very interested in the user-space RCU (read-copy-update), and trying to simulate one via tr1::shared_ptr, here is the code, while I'm really a newbie in concurrent programming, would some experts help me to review? The basic idea is, reader calls get_reading_copy() to gain the pointer of current protected data (let's say it's generation one, or G1). writer calls get_updating_copy() to gain a copy of the G1 (let's say it's G2), and only one writer is allowed to enter the critical section. After the updating is done, writer calls update() to do a swap, and make the m_data_ptr pointing to data G2. The ongoing readers and the writer now hold the shared_ptr of G1, and either a reader or a writer will eventually deallocate the G1 data. Any new readers would get the pointer to G2, and a new writer would get the copy of G2 (let's say G3). • Secure Copy File from remote server via scp and os module in Python

  I'm pretty new to Python and programming. I'm trying to copy a file between two computers via a python script. However the code os.system("ssh " + hostname + " scp " + filepath + " " + user + "@" + localhost + ":" cwd) won't work. I think it needs a password, as descriped in How do I copy a file to a remote server in python using scp or ssh?. I didn't get any error logs, the file just won't show in my current working directory. However every other command with os.system("ssh " + hostname + "command") or os.popen("ssh " + hostname + "command") does work. - command = e.g. ls When I try ssh hostname scp file user@local:directory in the commandline it works without entering a password. I tried to combine os.popen commands with getpass and pxssh module to establish a ssh connection to the remote server and use it to send commands directly (I only tested it for an easy command): import pxssh import getpass ssh = pxssh.pxssh() ssh.force_password = True hostname = raw_input("Hostname: ") user = raw_input("Username: ") password = getpass.getpass("Password: ") ssh.login(hostname, user, password) test = os.popen("hostname") print test But I'm not able to put commands through to the remote server (print test shows, that hostname = local and not the remote server), however I'm sure, the conection is established. I thought it would be easier to establish a connection than always use "ssh " + hostname in the bash commands. I also tried some of the workarounds in How do I copy a file to a remote server in python using scp or ssh?, but I must admit due to lack of expirience I didn't get them to work. • Copy constructor called even when returning by reference?

  Hi, I am testing the return of local objects by reference. My understanding of pass by reference is that it does not need to make any copy. Why is it not doing what I expected?
