  • Hybrid Shutdown in Windows 8

    Referring to this article published September 8, 2011, it gives instructions on how to to do a full (non-hybrid) shutdown in Windows 8 from the command line. We have an option in the UI to revert back to the Windows 7 shutdown/cold boot behavior, or since that’s likely a fairly infrequent thing, you can use the new /full switch on shutdown.exe. From a cmd prompt, run: shutdown /s /full / t 0 to invoke an immediate full shutdown. shutdown /s /full /t 0 I tried this in W8 Enterprise RTM trial, but did not work, so I did a shutdown /? and noticed they have changed the command for a Full shutdown It appears the /s switch now does the full shutdown as explained in the MS article, and the /hybrid switch does the hybrid shutdown for fast startup. Can anyone confirm this change in other RTM versions of Windows 8? Any Microsoft docs on this change are welcome.

Run replication and back-up the replica, stopping and restoring duplication services in points 4 and 7 and feel that it is actually hopeless.

    I'm unsuccessfully trying to get Wake on Lan to work with my local server (IP Address : 192.168.0.2, distro Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS) which has a Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E ethernet card. The computer sending the WOL is a Macbook Pro which is connected on the same network. Yet the server fails to start.     I have to draw a 20 plots and horizontally place a legends in each plots. I gave the following command for the first plot: plot(x=1:4,y=1:4) legend("bottom",legend = c("a","b","c","d"),horiz=TRUE,text.font=2,cex=0.64) then for the second plot I tried : plot(x=1:2,y=1:2) legend("bottom",legend = c("a","b"),horiz=TRUE,text.font=2,cex=0.64) But because the size of the character vector passed to legend argument are different I get the size of the legend different. Since I have to plot so many different plots having varying sizes of legends,I would want to do it in an automated fashion. Is there a way to do this which can fix the size of the legend in all the plots and fit it to graph size?

    I have the following layout defined for one of my Activities: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <TableLayout android:id="@+id/TableLayout01" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"> <TableRow android:id="@+id/TableRow01" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="fill_parent"> <EditText android:text="Resource Name" android:id="@+id/ResourceName" android:lines="1" android:isScrollContainer="false"></EditText> </TableRow> <TableRow android:id="@+id/TableRow02" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="fill_parent"> <Button android:id="@+id/Tile" android:text="Tile"></Button> </TableRow> </TableLayout> The layout renders almost correctly, the only problem is that my text box and my button aren't occupying the full width of their respective rows. I've tried specifying fill_parent for the layout width properties, but to no avail, they still only occupy roughly half of the screen. Documentation overall for Android so far has been great, but there are a few scenarios like this one where I hit an invisible wall! Thanks for all the help!

I cannot figure out the problem with the above matlab code, i doubt it's a problem with my logic since i've tested out this logic in java and it seems to work perfectly well there. The code compiles but the issue is that the results it produces are erroneous.   • Should I worry about reigning in namespace number/length/scope?

    I've recently reorganized a solution-in-progress from 24 projects to 4. To keep the copious files organized in the "main" project, things are in folders in folders in folders. I think I've preserved a logical, discoverable arrangement of the solution content. As a result, of course, I end up with namespaces like AppName.DataAccess.NHibernate.Fluent.Mappings. Is there any compelling reason that I should care about flattening out the namespace hierarchy when my project has a somewhat deeply nested folder structure? (I am not concerned about resolving or managing using directives; I let ReSharper do all the heavy lifting here.)

  • C#, WPF. Length of string that will fit in a specific width.

    Hi, I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, I have an area in which I intend to draw text. I know its (the area) height and width. I wish to know how many characters/Words will fit in the width, characters preferably. Second question, If the line is too long I'll want to draw a second line, so I guess I need to get the height of the text as well, including what ever it considers the right vertical padding? I'd also rather like to know the inverse, i.e. how many characters I can fit in a specific width. I assume the fact that WPF isn't constrained to pixels will have some bearing on the answer? Ultimately I'm planning on wrapping text around irregular shaped images embedded in the text. Any pointers in the right direction would be great. Thanks

    This is a language-agnostic question - unless you count English as a language. I've got this list of items which can have very long names. For aesthetic purposes, these names must be made shorter in some cases, adding dots (...) to indicate that the name is longer. So for example, if article.name returns this: lorem ipsum dolor sit amet I'd like to get this other output. lorem ipsum dolor ... I can program this quite easily. My question is: how should I call that shortening operation? I mean the name, not the implementation. Is there a standard English name for it?

    I have a WCF service that takes a stream: [ServiceContract] public class UploadService : BaseService { [OperationContract] [WebInvoke(BodyStyle=WebMessageBodyStyle.Bare, Method=WebRequestMethods.Http.Post)] public void Upload(Stream data) { // etc. } } This method is to allow my Silverlight application to upload large binary files, the easiest way being to craft the HTTP request by hand from the client. Here is the code in the Silverlight client that does this: const int contentLength = 64 * 1024; // 64 Kb var request = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create("http://localhost:8732/UploadService/"); request.AllowWriteStreamBuffering = false; request.Method = WebRequestMethods.Http.Post; request.ContentType = "application/octet-stream"; request.ContentLength = contentLength; using (var outputStream = request.GetRequestStream()) { outputStream.Write(new byte[contentLength], 0, contentLength); outputStream.Flush(); using (var response = request.GetResponse()); } Now, in the case above, where I am streaming 64 kB of data (or less), this works OK and if I set a breakpoint in my WCF method, and I can examine the stream and see 64 kB worth of zeros - yay!   • Interface for reading variable length files with header and footer.

    I could use some hints or tips for a decent interface for reading file of special characteristics. The files in question has a header (~120 bytes), a body (1 byte - 3gb) and a footer (4 bytes). The header contains information about the body and the footer is only a simple CRC32-value of the body. I use Java so my idea was to extend the "InputStream" class and add a constructor such as "public MyInStream( InputStream in)" where I immediately read the header and the direct the overridden read()'s the body. Problem is, I can't give the user of the class the CRC32-value until the whole body has been read. Because the file can be 3gb large, putting it all in memory is a be an idea. Reading it all in to a temporary file is going to be a performance hit if there are many small files. I don't know how large the file is because the InputStream doesn't have to be a file, it could be a socket. Looking at it again, maybe extending InputStream is a bad idea. In the machine wide web.config file we set the ASP.NET trust level to Medium (and lock to prevent overrides) and use a modified policy file.     I knocked up a nice little query to display backup history for each database in a pivot table format.I wanted to display the most recent full, differential, and transaction log backup for each database.   • Why is my .htaccess file redirecting to full server path instead of relative path?

    I've never had a problem with cakePHP before, but something's odd about this server and is causing the redirects in the .htaccess files to behave oddly. CakePHP uses mod_rewrite in .htaccess files to redirect requests to its own webroot folder. The problem is that the redirects are listing the wrong path and causing a 404 error. My CakePHP application, which is stored in the listings directory, has a .htaccess file as follows: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^$ app/webroot/ [R=301,L] RewriteRule (.*) app/webroot/$1 [R=301,L] </IfModule> (*note that the R=301 causes an external redirect so we can see what is going on from our end. It should really omit this flag and do the redirect internally, transparent to end-users) This is supposed to redirect any request from http://hostname.com/~username/listings/ to http://hostname.com/~username/listings/app/webroot/ However, rather than simply adding “app/webroot/” to the end as it is supposed to, it is adding the full server path ( /home/username/public_html/listings/app/webroot/ ) resulting in the final URL http://hostname.com/home/username/public_html/listings/app/webroot/ which is obviously incorrect and triggers a 404 error. The hosting is on a shared hosting account, so that limits what I can do with the settings. I've never seen this happen before, and I'm thinking it's something wrong from the hosting side of things, but if anyone has some helpful suggestions then I can put them to the hosting company as well.

    My code is something like the below. When theres 3 images everything is fine once theres 4 it gets full and moves the entire div.top into another row. How do i make the div inside top just start a new row instead? I tried writing .top width=500px but once it hits or passes it instead the images inside are squeeze together instead of each being 150x150. I tried max-width on top instead and in opera and chrome i see the border of top as 500width but the images continue to render pass it. (i have a firefox problem with my div so the width looks fixed to something else). I use .Net Framework3.5, what is the reason it?

Have a command with an arbitrary number of parameters, need to build ?,?,? Did I mention that it was a wet brain fart? this is what came out: Regex.Replace(new string('?', _command.Parameters.Count), @"\?\?", @"\?,\?"); You are welcome to make me feel like more of an idiot if you just remember me what I am forgetting. ;-)

  • How should I call the operation that limit a string's length?

    This is a language-agnostic question - unless you count English as a language. I've got this list of items which can have very long names. For aesthetic purposes, these names must be made shorter in some cases, adding dots (...) to indicate that the name is longer. So for example, if article.name returns this: lorem ipsum dolor sit amet I'd like to get this other output. lorem ipsum dolor ... I can program this quite easily. My question is: how should I call that shortening operation? I mean the name, not the implementation. Is there a standard English name for it?
