• Ubuntu 13.04 not detecting operating system Windows 8

  I have a Samsung NP740U3E with pre-installed Windows 8 (boots with UEFI). I installed Ubuntu 13.04 without problems. Later, Windows 8 did a BIOS update which messed up everything, nothing would boot. I recovered everything and went back to fabric settings. Now Windows 8 works fine, but when I try to install Ubuntu it does not detect any operating system, so I can`t install Ubuntu alongside Windows. I`ve googled as much as I can, ran a boot-repair, disabled fast- and secure-boot. I have a GPT disc, been looking into gdisk without luck. Here`s my boot-repair summary http://paste.ubuntu.com/5835719/ Is it necessary to convert the GPT disc to MBR? Is it possible to hard-reset the disc "even more" than fabric settings? • Ubuntu not booting after upgrade to 12.04 from 11.10

  I upgraded to 12.04 from 11.10 today. After the upgrade, I did the usual reboot of the system and then Ubuntu hangs on Checking battery state..[OK]. I can login to terminal with Ctrl-Alt-F5 and I did startx but it hangs after displaying white images of the desktop icons..there is no menu or any top bar at all. I guess this problem has something to do with Xserver, but I cannot find xorg.conf on my system. How can I get around this problem? Also is there a way I can make a backup of my files through the command line, because the GUI is not showing up at all?

• Desktop not showing after playing with compiz

  Having successfully installed Ubuntu 11.04 I decided to look into improving look and feel of the unity desktop. I could find no option to introduce any nice effects with the standard install, but a google session suggested Compiz would do the job. I installed this and selected the "Wobbly windows" option and this worked fine. After a while I thought I'd try some of the other available effects (can't remember which but may have been cube desktop) but this resulted in no windows showing at all. I now have just blank wall paper with no icons or menus. There are no error messages and right clicking the desktop produces a small context menu but nothing else. Rebooting brings me back to a blank desktop with just wallpaper. I do not know where to start.

• Upgrade to 11.10 left me with Kmail not working

  On my way from 10.10 to 12.04 I chose to do the step by step (11.04 then 11.10 then 12.04) because I could not figure if I should do that or a direct install of 12.04LTS. After the first step (11.04) all was well. The next day I upgraded to 11.10. Now I seem to have lost my data in KOrganizer and all of my email history in KMail. KMail still has my email accounts but my tree structure of folders is missing as is all of the emails that should be there. Also, when KMail opens I get the following: KMail encountered a fatal error and will terminate now. The error was: Failed to fetch the resource collection. Clicking OK closes KMail. KAlarm appears OK and my browser history is still in place as are various data files. What to do??

• Ubuntu 12.04 installer does not recognize Windows 7

  I recently purchased an ASUS N56VZ-ES71 laptop which came with Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it. I wish to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 on it. I shrank the hard drive partitions to leave about 150 GB unallocated for Ubuntu 12.04. When I boot the Live CD of Ubuntu and attempt to install, the installer does not recognize any other operating systems. Through reading a few questions, I have found that this is due to a GPT partitioning table that Windows uses. I ran boot-repair as per other threads' suggestions. This was my output: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1176988/ I suppose my question is: how do I proceed in order to get the installer to recognize Windows, so that I don't have to erase the current partition table and can get a safe install? • Ubuntu 14.04 not booting before Windows 8.1

  I try too boot my computer into Ubuntu, but I end up having to manually select Ubuntu from the devices menu, even though it was supposed to boot first. Instead Windows 8 boots up like Ubuntu isn't even there! And GRUB works just fine when Ubuntu is selected in the boot device menu. (How else am I on?) I tried using EasyBCD but kept getting errors from the windows boot manager. And just in case it helps, during installation of Ubuntu it didn't recognize windows 8, and I had to resize and install manually. Anything I can do? Notes: EVERYONE!!! GRUB WORKS PERFECTLY!!! IT IS AN ERROR IN THE HP BOOT MENU AS I HAVE PREVIOUSLY SAID!!! PLEASE DO NOT GIVE ME ANSWERS FOR GRUB EDITS IN THE FUTURE!!!   I have upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and my touchpad is not working at times on rebooting. There is no touchpad tab on system settings-mouse and touchpad. I have tried using the first two answers given here. I have tried omega@debasmita-laptop:~$ synclient TouchpadOff=0 Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded? When I try to open synaptiks it says no touchpad detected. However, USB mouse is working fine so far. Is there a solution to the problem?

• Lubuntu does not render font accurately [closed]

  I'm experiencing a weird bug, which I don't see to be able to track down to anything in particular.... Sometimes, Lubuntu won't display entirely a letter or two of the font used system-wide. I attached a screenshot of the last occurrence of the problem, where the affected letter is t. Any idea on what is causing it? And even better: any idea on how to fix it? PS: My Lubuntu installation is pretty much a stock one. I installed some additional software like "kupfer", "tilda" or "alsamixer"... but - as far as I remember - I did not tweak in any way the LXDE settings...

  Im using Lenovo G580. I installed Win7 first, two months ago. Now, i want to install Ubuntu 12.04. I used usb for installation. It went very well, but when i was reboot laptop after installation, it started Win7 not Ubuntu or bootloader for choice. LiveUbuntu is working very well. I tried install ubuntu a couple of times from other .iso. I tried recover Grub. When i change "boot" flag in gparted to partition with Ubuntu, BIOS show me error "missing operating system".("boot" flag is optionally on Windows partition c:/). Can it be hardware mistake? Or i did some mistakes?

• My ethernet connection is not working but it is detected by my computer

  I'm setting up an old computer with ubuntu server 12.04. I wiped the drive and went through the installation fine but afterwards the ethernet would not work. It's physically connected to the router and the card is recognized by lspci(SiS 900) but it won't connect at all. I've plugged in and installed the drivers for a wifi adapter and it's worked with the same router. Just so you know I've turned it on and off plenty of times. Any help would be appreciated.

  I installed Ubuntu One Files on my Nexus One phone. When I tap Log in on the main screen, the app tries to log in then after a few seconds returns the following message: Log-in failed, please try again later. I have an Ubuntu One account, and when I tap Register on the main screen for Ubuntu One Files, I can log in using my phone's Web browser. But if I go back to the app and try to log in, I get the same error. Again, my phone is a Nexus One running Android 2.3.4. The phone is not rooted or modded in any way.

  Authorized.net was processing my credit card purchases until the end of Feb. As of 3/1/2011 they no longer will process electronic cigarette transactions. Processing network told us we would have a seamless transition over to a processor called EPN. Now we can not process and credit card orders at all. I have been told it's an SSL concern (EPN says no) I have been told it's an issue between Authorized.net and EPN again I am told no. Might site worked and functioned fine until the "seamless" transition took place. Please help me out here. Thanks Dave

  Some may claim that this has already been asked, but I don't see MY problem in any of those posts. And if they actually have the same problem as mine, I may not understand what they've been trying to point out, actually.   I have a Maxtor OneTouch External Harddisk 160gb that i purchased recently. At first my Ubuntu 10.10 could not mount it. I opened disk utility which recognized it but with no filesystem. I proceeded to try formatting it but this error popped up Blockquote Error creating partition table: helper exited with exit code 1: Error calling fsync(2) on /dev/sdb: Input/output error Blockquote I resorted to Gparted. Things turned worse; it wasn't even listed in the list of devices. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Any help is appreciated.

• External Hard disk not workng on windows after I formatted it on Ubuntu

  I formatted my Western Digital 500 Gb hard disk on Ubuntu 10.4 and now I want to use it on Windows 7 but it cannot detect it. I formatted it with FAT(applicable to all) option. I tried to Google this problem a bit and as suggested by one of the site i tried to format this drive with NTFS. Still windows cannot detect it. Drives in windows 7 is not a problem because I tried a different usb drive on it and it works. I can see the led of the drive glow when I connect it and I can also see remove drive safely option in lower right corner, but i cannot see any option in "my computer" to access the hard disk. I am new to Ubuntu. Any help is appreciated.

• Linux does not connect to wireless network under Hyper-V with Windows 8

  I have a VM I am trying to run under Hyper-V on Windows 8 Pro. I am using an Asus PDE-N15 adapter on the host machine. When I run Windows 8 in the VM it connects to the network and everything works. When I use Linux (Ubuntu 13.04 32-bit, Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit, Fedora, CentOS) it will not connect to the network. When I run ifconfig I see the adapter show up as eth0 with the correct HWaddr. I see that TX bytes 0, and RX bytes == 0. Could anyone help me figure out how to get this to work?

• Wobbly windows not working in compiz for 12.04

  I'm very new at Ubuntu and am still trying to figure everything out. I recently downloaded Compiz settings manager and enabled wobbly windows. Nothing. So I uninstalled it and re-installed it and still, nothing. I've ran all the updates and updated the graphics drivers and I still have nothing. I have a Sony Vaio with a Intel® Core™2 CPU T5500 @ 1.66GHz × 2 . Its a 2009 computer, so I think it should be able to work just fine. Please help! I'm not a "computer wiz", so you'll need to put it in simpler terms for me. And yes, I am I do have Unity 3D. Thanks!

When i switch on the bluetooth/wireless (hardware switch), only the bluetooth is turning on. For wireless, it shows as "hardware disabled". P.S: It was working fine few days before. Suddenly It is not turning on. i just get an answer for this question while googling. just enter the following command in the terminal. • Wine not working in 12.04?

  I updated to Ubuntu 12.04 by doing a clean install from a CD. I installed Wine, Q4wine, WineTricks, PlayOnLinux all from the Software Center. After installing Kindle For PC(I ran it in 11.10 as well) Wine doesn't open it. Then I tried to install a game (Eastside Hockey Manager 2007) that I have had Installed on all my previous versions of Ubuntu, again Wine returned an error saying that the installer GUI would not load. So far I'm lost as to why this is happening. Does anyone have an idea?

• CellC data card not recognized if I boot with it in

  In 11.10 I find that I can connect to the internet via broadband connection successfully. The problem is that I cannot have the data card attached to the machine while the machine boots up. If I leave the data card in the machine during startup, the data card is not picked up and I then cannot connect to the internet. I must first boot up my machine, login, attach the data card into the usb port, wait so 30 seconds. The broadband connection name will then appear in the network dropdown at the top of the screen. An internet connect is now possible via broadband. Please let me know what must be done to fix this.

  This is precisely a 12.04 HDMI output problem, because it works for 11.10 - everything else are the same, only the OS version is different. The symptom is that on my HDMI output TV screen, it always shows Unsupported resolution even after setting it to the resolution that works on Ubuntu 11.10 (via gnome-control-center, in which it detects my TV just fine), I still don't see any output on TV. The audio is not working either. I think it is 12.04's problem, because if I boot into Ubuntu 11.10, and everything else remain the same, HDMI output (video & audio) work just fine. 12.04 is a freshly installed, just the vanilla Ubuntu HD installation. How should I nailed down / fix the problem?

This error happens soon after Applet loads. I am supposed to get a WebRDP Screen with logo then a Windows Login screen for the remote machine. ( This is working fine in Linux Mint) Anyone has experienced this problem? Any solutions?
