  • Role of MBR in the booting process

    I am new to stack overflow. So please correct me if my question seems irrelevant or stupid. I read here in Booting Process : The job of the primary boot loader is to find and load the secondary boot loader (stage 2). It does this by looking through the partition table for an active partition. When it finds an active partition, it scans the remaining partitions in the table to ensure that they're all inactive. When this is verified, the active partition's boot record is read from the device into RAM and executed. The question is that I am having a Hard disk which has two Operating System images windows and ubuntu and hence both partitions in which they reside are active. Then why do we have only one active partition always? (I know that active partition is one of the primary partition but then why we are giving special reference to one primary partition? ) I am confused a bit. Please solve my query. Thank you so much.

    Using the trait \Knp\DoctrineBehaviors\Model\Translatable\Translation inside an Entity, I see that the property currentLocale is never setted , so we always obtain the default locale ('en') in all the calls to $this->translate(). If I change this getDefaultLocale, all the translations are made correctly, so I think that is no problem with the fallback. I tried debug the currentLocaleCallable. I see that if I put a "var_dump ($this-container-get('request'));" in the contructor of currentLocaleCallable, the request have a locale to null.   • Mapping issue with multi-field primary keys using hibernate/JPA annotations

    Hi all, I'm stuck with a database which is using multi-field primary keys. I have a situation where I have a master and details table, where the details table's primary key contains fields which are also the foreign key's the the master table. Like this: Master primary key fields: master_pk_1 Details primary key fields: master_pk_1 details_pk_2 details_pk_3 In the Master class we define the hibernate/JPA annotations like this: @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.SEQUENCE, generator = "idGenerator") @Column(name = "master_pk_1") private long masterPk1; @OneToMany(cascade=CascadeType.ALL) @JoinColumn(name = "master_pk_1", referencedColumnName = "master_pk_1") private List<Details> details = new ArrayList<Details>(); And in the details class I have defined the id and back reference like this: @EmbeddedId @AttributeOverrides( { @AttributeOverride( name = "masterPk1", column = @Column(name = "master_pk_1")), @AttributeOverride(name = "detailsPk2", column = @Column(name = "details_pk_2")), @AttributeOverride(name = "detailsPk2", column = @Column(name = "details_pk_2")) }) private DetailsPrimaryKey detailsPrimaryKey = new DetailsPrimaryKey(); @ManyToOne @JoinColumn(name = "master_pk_1", referencedColumnName = "master_pk_1", insertable=false) private Master master; The goal of all of this was that I could create a new master, add some details to it, and when saved, JPA/Hibernate would generate the new id for master in the masterPk1 field, and automatically pass it down to the details records, storing it in the matching masterPk1 field in the DetailsPrimaryKey class. At least that's what the documentation I've been looking at implies. What actually happens is that hibernate appears to corectly create and update the records in the database, but not pass the key to the details classes in memory. Instead I have to manually set it myself. I also found that without the insertable=true added to the back reference to master, that hibernate would create sql that had the master_pk_1 field listed twice in the insert statement, resulting in the database throwing an exception. My question is simply is this arrangement of annotations correct? or is there a better way of doing it?

  • Git push current branch to a remote with Heroku

    I'm trying to create a staging branch on Heroku, but there's something I don't quite get. Assuming I've already created a heroku app and setup the remote to point to staging-remote, If I do: git checkout -b staging staging-remote/master I get a local branch called 'staging' which tracks staging-remote/master - or that's what I thought.... But: git remote show staging-remote Gives me this: remote staging Fetch URL: [email protected]:myappname.git Push URL: [email protected]:myappname.git HEAD branch: master Remote branch: master tracked Local branch configured for 'git pull': staging-remote merges with remote master Local ref configured for 'git push': master pushes to master (up to date) As you can see, the pull looks reasonable, but the default push does not. It implies that if I do: git push staging-remote I'm going to push my local master branch up to the staging branch. But that's not what I want.... Basically, I want to merge updates into my staging branch, then easily push it to heroku without having to specify the branch like so: git push staging-remote mybranch:master The above isn't hard to do, but I want to avoid accidentally doing the previous push and pushing the wrong branch... This is doubly important for the production branch I'd like to create! I've tried messing with git config, but haven't figured out how to get this right yet...

    How to design data storage for huge tagging system (like digg or delicious)? There is already discussion about it, but it is about centralized database. Since the data is supposed to grow, we'll need to partition the data into multiple shards soon or later. So, the question turns to be: How to design data storage for partitioned tagging system? The tagging system basically has 3 tables: Item (item_id, item_content) Tag (tag_id, tag_title) TagMapping(map_id, tag_id, item_id) That works fine for finding all items for given tag and finding all tags for given item, if the table is stored in one database instance. If we need to partition the data into multiple database instances, it is not that easy. For table Item, we can partition its content with its key item_id. For table Tag, we can partition its content with its key tag_id. For example, we want to partition table Tag into K databases. We can simply choose number (tag_id % K) database to store given tag. But, how to partition table TagMapping? The TagMapping table represents the many-to-many relationship. I can only image to have duplication. That is, same content of TagMappping has two copies. One is partitioned with tag_id and the other is partitioned with item_id. In scenario to find tags for given item, we use partition with tag_id. If scenario to find items for given tag, we use partition with item_id. As a result, there is data redundancy. And, the application level should keep the consistency of all tables. It looks hard. Is there any better solution to solve this many-to-many partition problem?

    Following: http://www.rodsbooks.com/ubuntu-efi/ and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFIBooting#Detect_.28U.29EFI_firmware_processor_architecture I have ubuntu booting on my macbook pro with both refined and the native apple loader working, however, I would like to get the "Improving the Boot Method" (i believe it is called the kernel efi stub loader) working with the Apple Boot manager (the article only explains for refined), but have found no articles explaining this. Can anyone help with this? Below is what I have: What I have is the following: /dev/sda apple partitions /boot ext3 (root) ext3 swap side notes: From what I understand, I should have had my boot partition as fat32/hfs+... I can always switch it or copy the kernel to the apple EFI partition. (I tried creating /boot as an hfs+ partition during installation but was unable. Even after installing hfsprogs, although I was able to create an hfs+ partition in gparted I couldn't use the partition as /boot in ubiquity).

  • Ubuntu confuses my partitions

    I have 3 relevant partitions split between 2 disks, sda2: Windows 1 partition sda3: Ubuntu partition sdb1: Data partition I was using pysdm to add a label to my partitions and somehow I seem to have screwed up my installation. Now, every time I access the Data partition mounted in /media/Data I see the files in my Windows partition, and viceversa. I've tried unmounting and remounting correctly to no avail, it seems that wherever I mount sda2, if I access that folder I get the files in sdb1, and viceversa. Anyone know what may have happened and how to solve this?   • How can I install Ubuntu Saucy Server with BTRFS?

    So, a week ago I installed the latest beta version of Ubuntu Saucy Server in a MacMini using BTRFS as only partition to mount "/" on it (I know it's not recommended to do this, but it's not the point here) with no problems et al. Everything went just "naturally"... Now with the released image of 13.10 server, I just can't get any BTRFS partition done from installer. I'm getting a "Can't create filesystem" error whenever I try to create any BTRFS partition, like the 13.10 server final installer can't handle format BTRFS partitions... Am I doing something wrong? Or it's a bug in the installer? Is there anything that I can do to workaround this and get my BTRFS partition set on installation, or I'll need to work this after the installation. I can just leave some space left and create a btrfs partition later on, with Saucy already installed and proceed to use to LXC (which is my solo purpose to have btrfs), but anyway, why installer can't do btrfs anymore?

      We have found that it is necessary in Demantra to have an index that matches the partition key, although it does not have to be the PK.  It is ok   to create a new index instead of changing the PK.   For example, if my PK on SALES_DATA is (ITEM_ID, LOCATION_ID, SALES_DATE) and I decide partition by SALES_DATE, then I should add an index starting   with the partition key like this: (SALES_DATE, ITEM_ID, LOCATION_ID).   * Note that the first column of the new index matches the partition key.   It might also be helpful to create a 2nd index with the other PK columns reversed (SALES_DATE, LOCATION_ID, ITEM_ID). Again, the first column   matches the partition key.

  • Netbook partitioning scheme suggestions

    I got a new Asus EEE PC 1015PEM with 2GB RAM and a 250GB HD. After playing with the netbook edition a little, I would like to install the desktop edition I'm used to. In addition to ubunto partition(s), I would like to have one separate partition for data (documents, music, etc.), so I could try other OSs in the future without losing the data. What partition scheme would you recommend? I usually like to let the installation do it by itself, but when I try to that I can only use the entire disk, so I don't get the desired data partition. I wish there was a way to see the recommended default partitioning scheme, then just tweak it a bit to fit your needs (instead of building one from scratch). So, how would you recommend I partition my HD? Please be specific since I never manually partitioned before. Thanks!

Current process: We have a GIT server with a master branch to which everyone commits Devs work off the local master mirror or a local feature branch Devs commit to server's master branch Devs request code review on last commit Problem: Any bug in code review are already in master by the time it's caught. Worse, usually someone has burnt a few hours trying to figure out what happened... So, we would like To do code review BEFORE delivery into the 'master'. Have a process that works with a global team (no over the shoulder reviews!) something that doesn't require an individual dev to be at his desk/machine to be powered up so someone else can remote in (remove human dependency, devs go home at different timezones) We use TortoiseGIT for a visual representation of a list of files changed, diff'ing files etc. Some of us drop into a GIT shell when the GUI isn't enough, but ideally we'd like the workflow to be simple and GUI based (I want the tool to lift any burden, not my devs).

  • Unable to start GRUB2 on Triple boot Macbook Pro with OS X Lion, Windows 7 and Ubuntu

    I installed Windows 7 using Bootcamp. Then I created a partition from the empty space in the Windows partition and another 4GB partition for the linux swap using GParted. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in the the newly created partition from the Windows partition. Now GRUB2 does not load and I can only see the blinking cursor on the top right when selecting "Windows HD" from the 'option' key at the start up. OS X works fine but nothing else.     I have installed Window 8.1 on my HP laptop.Now I want to install Ubuntu 14.04,I try to use "Wubi" but when I use it, after installation on window, when my computer restart i have a message "No root file system is defined" I have read some thread here and i got some solution. One of them are "I must format my partition again, using ext4 format and mount on it". I did it by using Gparted in Try Ubuntu mode, but I got another message "/dev/sda contains GPT signatures,indicating that it has a GPT table. However, it does not have a valid fake msdos partition table,as it should. Perhaps it was corrupted--possibly by a program that does not understand GPT partition table. Or perhaps you deleted the GPT table, and are now using msdos partition table. Is this a GPT partition table?"

  • Need help migrating from Wubi

    I know this question has been asked, but I am looking for specific help with my partition selection. I want to migrate my install from wubi to be a dual boot. When I installed it I choose a small, partition, around 30GB. I am following these instructions: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MigrateWubi I see sda4 matches that size, but has mount point as '/host', am I okay to use this one? EDIT: Here is a screenshot of my partitions. http://i.imgur.com/ozPe0.png My windows partition is actually not there, that is down as sdb1, so safely out of the way? I can confirm sda4 is the location of the 'virtual partition' and is an otherwise, unused 26GB partition. It's also where I would like to migrate to a full install to.

    The volume increment or decrement is happening double the intended amount using amixer for my alsa driver using ./amixer -c 0 set Master 1- command. This happens becuase by default volume controls apply for both playback and capture moduels. My alsa driver config doesnt enabled any of the capture controls. even there is no capture enabled, the function from simple_none.c returns true for capture channel.     In a master page(_form) I want to save three fields drop down text box Option list and if a certain option from the option list is selected I need a JQrelcopy to appear and the user can add many values using JQrelcopy. The values, which are stored in JQrelcopy has to be saved in some other table. Now the problem is I want to give AJAX validation like the field cannot be blank, Only alphabetical characters are allowed for the fields which are inserted through JQrelcopy. I thought about creating a scenario, but I can't get it right

  • How do I get Composer to download the latest commit in the master branch from GitHub for a package?

    I am trying to get Composer do download the latest commit for the Behat/MinkSelenium2Driver package. That particular repo only has a master branch. I have tried every method I can think of, including deleting the files and letting it pull them back in, to get it to work but it doesn't. How would I get it to pull in latest committed files or at least those from the commit I list below? Specifically I want to get this commit: https://github.com/Behat/MinkSelenium2Driver/commit/2e73d8134ec8526b6e742f05c146fec2d5e1b8d6 Thanks, Patrick

  • merge 1 commit from 1 branch to the master ?

    I read this about git branch: http://book.git-scm.com/3_basic_branching_and_merging.html I have create a branch called 'experimental'. I switch to that branch and make 2 commits there. So if it possible for me to merge the later commit (the 2nd of the 2 commits) of the experiment to the master branch? Thank you.
